Hopkins still wants Roy Jones Jr.
By William Mackay: Bernard Hopkins refuses to be turned off towards a rematch with Roy Jones Jr., despite Jones being destroyed in a 1st round TKO on Wednesday night by Danny Green in Sydney, Australia. Hopkins defeated an over-matched middleweight contender Enrique Ornelas tonight in a 12 round unanimous decision in Philadelphia.
Hopkins appeared to be trying to make give excuses for the stoppage, obviously trying to save the bout with Jones. The problem is that boxing fans have seen the fight, and are likely going to believe their eyes and not excuses given by Hopkins. After all, it isn’t as if Hopkins doesn’t have something to gain by making Jones look good. Whatever the case, hopefully Hopkins comes to his senses and thinks hard about still wanting to fight Jones, because it’s highly doubtful that the boxing public will be clamoring to see this fight. I think it will do well in the home city of Hopkins and Jones, and it might do some average numbers on pay-per-view, but it’s probably not going to be a huge money making bout like it would have had Jones not been stopped by Green.
Hopkins also said “I”m going to be heavyweight champion” talking of next year. Hopkins is hoping to get a title shot against World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye. It would be a nice fight if Haye decides he wants to fight Hopkins. However, Haye seems to be more interested in fighting the Klitschko brothers instead, the two best heavyweights in the division. The payday against either of them would obviously dwarf the one that Haye would get against the light heavyweight Hopkins. Hopkins also looked very slow against Ornelas tonight, and that was at 175. If he were to gain another 25 to 40 pounds to fight Haye, I’d to see how slow Hopkins would be at that weight. Haye, who is very fast, would destroy Hopkins in one sided fight at heavyweight. Hopkins would be better off staying at light heavyweight and fighting Chad Dawson. I think he’d lose, but it would be a good fight against a good opponent.

ILLEGAL punch to the back of the head, holding Roy’s head and pulling Roy’s gloves down. Where was the ref? This was a dirty fight. however, since Jones VS Lacey he seemed more concerned on showing of rather boxing. stop dropping your hands….so early in the fight. I would pay to see Jones vs Hopkins. Also, a different weight division.
Hopkins style tends to create dull fights and although he still looks young for his age any younger fighters beating him will be accused of fighting an old man.
What Corey said, totally agree. No interest and it’s in their best interest to retire.
Jones was a great fighter who relied on quickness and reflexes to get out of trouble. Once he slowed down he was hittable (probally not a word) and that’s why Tarver, Johnson, and now Green were able to dispatch him. I have no interest in seeing Jones-Hopkins…probably would be more of the same for Jones. Retirement is both of their best options…don’t totally ruin their legacies.
There would be no interest in a Green-Hopkins bout. Hopkins probably only has a couple fights left in him, he took one tuneup and will now try to get one or two more paydays. I think he should fight dawson that would be an interesting fight to watch.
Green is alot more comfortable and powerfull at light heavyweight and Hopkins won’t fight him because he knowa he’d get knocked out.
simple as that.
Lets see b-hop fight green
hopkins is finished too hes got very slow he an jones jnr were great fighters, if hopkins is to fight again id like to see him shut ozy danny greens mouth what a big head he has, and yes he got luck with a finished jones jnr,who didnt look interested in the fight at all!
@ Red
You bought what those nuthuggin annoucers said? Who the hell is Danny Green, a freakin nobody who got lucky. Jones has been washed up for years and he never learned to keep his hands up.
Danny Green is a legend. He proves that bash will beat flash every time. I would like to see him fight Hopkins so I can cash in like against Jones Jr… put the house on a Green ko. I don’t think it will happen though, Hopkins will take the easier path against Jones Jr.
Hopkins needs to loose his hard-on for Jones Jnr, truly, and just learn to accept that when they fought years ago, he came off worse and Jones Jnr got his victory !
What would Hopkins be proving by fighting a really, really washed up Jones Jnr ? Really, what ??
When Jnr was in his prime ( steriod abuse acusations aside for a moment ), Jones was just tge better man back then … end of !!
Oh, and Hopkins should retire his a.s now too – before Haye lands it in hospital for a long period !!
The only loses Green have are to Markus Beyer DQ & MD and Anthony Mundine who Mundine is a good fighter.
He is not well known outside Australia but to Australia Green is a hero.
I would like to see Hopkins vs Green instead of Hopkins vs Jones it doesn’t make sense anymore.
b-hop needs to fight chad dawson or paul williams i think fat boy james toney will KO him!
while danny green may not be well recognised outside of australia, surely there would be interest in a match between hopkins and someone who could stop roy jones in under a round. there’s no doubt that hopkins is a superior boxer than green, but that doesn’t mean that he would win the bout. green has never been ko’d and has enough power to warrant anyone in the weight division being very wary of a fight against him. many people have said since the green fight that jones was well past his best – and there seems to be no doubt in that – but to stop roy jones in round one is a seriously remarkable effort, and something that should be acknowledged no matter where you are from. i’m not sure if hopkins would be scared of green as mentioned above, but i guarantee that danny green won’t be worried about going toe to toe with hopkins. i think it would be a fight where anything could happen. surely if this is promoted correctly then it will draw interest worldwide?
