Hopkins “I want to fight Haye” – News

hop43534By Bruno Camuti: Bernard Hopkins, just coming off his victory against Enrique Ornelas on Wednesday evening has said that he would like to fight World Boxing Association heavyweight champ David Haye. Hopkins was next to fight old foe Roy Jones Jr next, but Jones was stopped in 122 seconds against Danny Green in Australia last night.

It was pretty obvious last night that Jones was shot, and really should have retired years ago, but the lure of money and acclaim is too much sometimes for boxers to ignore. If Jones does decides to retire then Hopkins has commented that he would like to fight the Haymaker.

The possibility of Hopkins and Haye getting in the ring is small, Haye would want the fight at Heavyweight as it is widely know that he struggles to make the Cruiserweight weight limit(no chance of making the light heavyweight limit), as it drains him leaving him weak, and struggling for fitness. Hopkins would then have to move up to heavyweight, which I think would be a step too far for the future Hall of Famer. Although an intriguing possibility, it’s a risk that is not worth the payday.

Both Hopkins and Jones have cemented their legacies and their hall of fame status, what need is there to carry on and play Russian roulette with their health? There is no denying both fighters are in fantastic shape for their ages, but both have made millions. The only possible reason for continuing is pride and the rush of being in the limelight.

David Haye would literally kill Hopkins inside round 1.

It is the stupidest thing I have heard since Scott Gilfords last article, lol.

I think it is worth Hopkins fighting Haye, but he would need at least three tune-up fights at Heavyweight, so he can get acustomed to carrying the extra weight, before going in against Haye.

Imagine if he won the Heavyweight title, he drops back down to fight Jermain Taylor, as B-Hop has unfinished business with JT.

I don’t think that will happen as JT is committed to the Super 6 for the next 2/3 years.

Both need to retire, although Hopkins seems to still be going strong, but it only takes one fight for you to get old.

Haye would have too much for Hopkins. Too big, too strong and too quick. Especially with Hopkins approaching 44 years old, you really wouldn’t want to get old against a boxer who punches like Haye, could cause permanent damage at the least.

  • Cam says:

Theres no way Haye would risk this………..& im refering to the risk that a punch may well indeed kill Bhop!

This is surely complete nonsense & hype to keep himself in the news. I mean Haye was a light heavy amatuer early in his career but he’s been KO’ing Cruisers (2 heavies) his whole pro life. Hopkins has been KO’ing middleweights & some were jumped up welters.

    Bernard, Noooooo.
