Haye v Klitschko debate: Setting the record straight

vit8By Richard McNamara: During the course of the last few weeks/months I have sat back and analyzed a lot of articles churned out by what some people would and do refer to as very poor boxing writers. So I have decided to put the record straight. I have promised myself to remain unbiased and write this article based on facts, not fiction I will give my opinions but I’m happy to open myself up to criticism and accept it, not blacklist someone because I fear views of others, and you never know maybe I will learn from it.

Much talk recently has been about World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye fighting one of the Klitschko brothers and for obvious reasons, opinion has been divided. I personally do not see a walk in the park for either Haye or the Klitschko’s if/when these fights happen I see a tough night’s work for both parties involved. What has somewhat confused me are the constant remarks by certain writers and people who post on here, that Haye ducked/backed out of both fights, so time to set the record straight. Haye never backed out of either. Lets start with the Wlad fight, Haye got injured or supposedly got injured, opinion is divided here because of the Setanta farce, either way Haye gave Wlad 7 weeks notice Wlad rightly or wrongly chose not to wait and decided to fight Ruslan Chagaev instead.

I can understand exactly why he did this, training, peaking and a payday it made sense but at the end of it all Haye never backed out, he was forced to pull out citing injury and was not granted a postponement. As for Vitali, well that fight never existed so how can Haye of pulled out? The fight only existed in the media, some fan’s and promoter’s minds it never existed on paper, no contract was ever signed sealed and delivered.

Again rightly or wrongly it was Haye who chose to not sign and decided to fight Valuev instead. I can understand why he did this, its common knowledge that the Klitschkos were offering to fight him, but citing some very bizarre if not extreme rematch clauses. In Haye now being the WBA champion hopefully if/when these fights happen, we as fans will avoid this and not have to put up with a fighter vacating a title to oblige rematches with both brothers, should he have won.

This would have achieved nothing for the Heavy Weight division and nothing for Haye. Being WBA Champ basically puts him in a better position to now negotiate with the Klitschkos , better for Haye, better for boxing and better for us as fans. Finally there have been some articles and posts from various people lambasting Haye’s choice of Valuev as an opponent, and the performance he put in to take the belt.

What I will say to this, is as a boxing fan I have not seen either of the Klitschkos make any real concerted effort to get Valuev in the ring over the years, why? If Valuev was such an easy fight why has neither brother really gone looking for him? He may have looked poor against an old Holyfield and won a dubious decision that night, but due to his sheer size and fairly sound technique he’s a difficult customer for any opponent.

It may not have been the prettiest nor most exciting fight that Haye has been involved in but its utter madness to base a man’s chances on one performance. Injury and all I think he did a pretty good job considering., he comprehensively out boxed Valuev and with a busted hand shook him to the bones in points of that fight.

Finally I have always believed sites like this are here to open up debate, so rather than racially insulting each other, writing biased prejudice articles with no substance so as just to start the whole “my countries better than yours” argument and get a hit rate, might I suggest that certain writers think long and hard before writing another article and lets get this site back to where it should be and more importantly lets get back to what its all about.

I welcome any responses

RMC

Oh my god – a decent article on this website. It’s been months since I’ve seen one of these!

    Well written.

David haye as the class hand speed and power 2 out work and beat vitali.. from vitali’s recent fights his work rate and overall performance looked poor.. expect a new british heavyweight champion soon people

Thanks to everyone who has commented, both positive and negative I’ll take it all on board. This was my first attempt at anything like this. Thanks.

Well written rmc and well analyzed. Its easy for most people who have never boxed or know about boxing to comment.Muhammed Ali was 6 ft 3 and the tallest person he faced was Tyrell who was 6 ft 5 who he took to school. Its easy to say Haye fought badly against valuev but I am very sure he is probably one of very few people to fight an opponent a whole foot taller and 100poundds heavier. For him to also wobble valuev in round twelve means he has power to hurt any heavyweight. I see him taking out both klits maybe even easily. They have too many flaws. Vitali was open to so many shots all night long. I kj had any power at all he was in trouble. Only on condition, Haye must stay away from his right hand and be ready to absorb a shot or two. Speed always kills in boxing. Mayweather, manny, jones at his prime, Sugar ray robinson, ray leonard, tyson and jack johnson. Come to think of it “most” of the greatest boxers of all time have all been fast. Haye wins both klits as long as he stays away from power shots. They are just too slow. Keep up the good Job rmc.

A good article giving the facts but people will believe what they want to believe. If Haye KO’s Vitali they will say Vitali was old and shot and it proves nothing. They will say the same about Ruiz, just a 2nd rate fighter. For Vlad the less powerful of the 2 brothers and an easy one. It is more balanced if we just keep throwing insults at each other.

  • Goose says:

Good article. I’m pretty sure Haye pulled out of the Klitchko fight more due to setanta than a back problem, but the onerous rematch conditions probably didn’t help.

You are right about the brothers avoiding valuev, I think the combination of negotiating a contract with Don King and facing a fighter that they couldn’t dominate with their jab wasn’t worth the risk.

If/when a fight does happen I think either of the brothers should have the upper hand, although the will have to throw more right hands than they usually do becuse I don’t think they have the footwork to keep Haye pinned down with the jab alone

  • Ancient_Silence says:

    Mr McNamara,
Opinions as you know can cause other side effects once aired. I see what you are trying to do with this article and i do appreciate it. I would rather read and participate in debates about boxing and not semantics. The way i see it people are very passionate about the fighters that catch their attention. The problem is that some people, for whatever reason think that once THEY know something that their information is infallible and voila! Suddenly people are attacking their keyboards with vigor to essentially defend something which has more to do with personal pride and stubbornness than boxing. All this because some people cannot accept new information.
I would like to see more articles from you in the future keep it up even when it looks like no-one is listening.

wicked article mate best ive read in a long wile

  • AnthonyW says:

This article is no doubt fairly biased.
But, the people who are commenting saying, ‘another biased article’ are the ones who are reading Scott Gilfoid’s articles about Haye and agreeing with him.
Gilfoid has seen one David Haye fight, against Valuev, and this was probably his worst performance (along with his only defeat) It was no doubt his least entertaining bout to date.
Haye has the potential to be a force in the Heavyweight division (those who have seen more than one of his fights will agree). He at least tries to enter bouts in top shape, as opposed to the fat Heavyweights who think, more McDonald’s = more Power.

RICHARD i did not read your whole article. I can tell you right now that you dont know sht, and yuo are full of sht, like all these sht burger eaters.that replied to you.

  • robinsonj says:

article nuts and evidently english….the bros have been trying to get the giant in the ring for years…and vlad beat a man easily who did better against the giant than haye did…vitali has made a concerted effort since his return to get him in the ring…and no, the giant has no skill, like haye is now he was a protected don king fighter who really lost to a what, 52 year old holyfield, who, by the way also looked better than haye

  • dan says:

i heard haye wouldn’t sign the vitali contract because if he won he immediately had to fight vitali again (and again take a smaller purse) then if he won again he had to fight wlad (& take a smaller purse) and if he won again he had to rematch wlad (& guess what? take a smaller purse). so it was a four fight deal, he wasn’t going to get huge money & he had to do whatever the klitschko’s said in terms of venue, ring size & gloves. & if he lost he doesn’t get a rematch. who would sign that contract?

  • Tony Y says:

bang on! a decent article on here for once!

  • james says:

Haye has done the smart thing in raising his value before he faces the Klitschkos, He’s aware he needs to get a good payday, because he is no lennox lewis and will be exposed and thrust back into the pack of chambers, arreola, povetkin etc. Either brother takes him apart, and i don’t see how anyone truly being honest with themselves can say otherwise

  • Alex says:

Another very biased article! Klitschko’s were always after Valuev fight when David Haye pulled out of Wladimir’s fight Wladimir was looking to fight Valuev first, he politely refused, then he went and fought Chagaev. David Haye definately beat Valuev but nobody was impressed by his performance throwing at most 10 punches per round for the fastest HW outhere is just a disgrace as opposed to Vitali’s 80 shots against Arreola. Even Chagaev and Holyfield looked better against Valuev than David Haye. I give him little chances against both brothers.

  • Davey says:

    Nice article Richard

  • Justin says:

Completely agree! best article i’ve read here for a while now

  • Andrew says:

    My points:

    1) Valuev was avoided because 2 guys with Phd’s are too clever to get involved with Don King

    2) David Haye’s entire purse was from Setanta which folded leading up to the fight. A healthy young fighter like David Haye (with no history of medical problems) doesn’t suddenly get back problems from nowhere !!!!!!

    3) Haye’s trainer Adam Booth , when the fight with Wladimir was being arranged was clearly not happy when Vitali was mentioned as an alternative “the one with the balls and the chin”
To read between the lines, David Haye would not have a lucky punch chance against a guy with a granite chin.

  • zee zee says:

    Nice article,

    FACT:
    – vitali has 2 left feet, has no foot work.

    – wladamir has no chin / no heart.

    – vitali is the stronger better quicker smarter than the 2 brothers.

    – david haye can knock out Waldamir with eaze.

    – both Haye / Wladamir has question marks on chin and stamina. yet Haye has greater footwork / power / speed.

    – Vitali has the best Chin in Boxing today. the dude took KING Lennox Lewis’s punches.

OVER ALL, David haye will KO Wladamir with eaze.
but will face a huge problem when facing Vitali.

lets face it, valaev was the worst champion ever,
    go haye.

  • Doctor says:

No sorry, yet again a biased article. First you say “never backed out of either” “Haye got injured” “or supposedly” Which is it?
“He was forced” By what? Citing an injury, well where is the doctors report?
Vitali you say there was never a contract, so what was Haye moaning about a contract for, if there wasn’t one? What exactly where these bizarre conditions, has anybody seen the contract? oh yes there wasn’t one, which is it?

Haye backed out for business reasons why enter the HW division and get flattened by the first big fight you have. Better go for the one that you have seen a smaller man beat and an older, lets get this right 46yrs old man also in my opinion beat, that’s looks better. The fight with Valuev means nothing and we know it. Nobody really counts any fighter unless you have beaten a Klitschko. They are the best and again last night proved it, yet another undefeated HW gone and shamefully this time not like Arreola. Vitali for 2010 and I believe Haye’s scalp will be on his belt.

  • motownhitman says:

    Nice article.

  • Ukansodoff says:

Yes nice article, your guna get plenty of stick but not from me cuz i think i see it pretty much exactly like you do.

My gut feeling is Haye pulled out of the Vlad fight for money reasons but thats just my theory.

I wish people would realise that Haye did not run from the Klitchkos, he wants them bad he just wont be mugged on the contract table for the chance. Whether he can beat them or not we have our opinions, but he truly believes he can and that is why he is so desperate to do it.

  • JonnyLH says:

Nice article, however I must say that in my opinion this is a biased article too.

You’re interpreting the ‘facts’ in a completely pro Haye way, which makes you a hypocryte.
