Dirrell vs. Abraham postponed?

dirrell6544By Scott Gilfoid: According to an article from the news site Mlive, the Super Six tournament bout between talented American Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KO’s) and German based Arthur Abraham has been postponed due to Abraham suffering a bad case of the flu, causing the fight to be put off until March 7th. If this turns out to be the case, it will be disappointing news for fans of Dirrell and Abraham.

This fight is already being looked forward to by many people in the boxing world and it would horrible if they have to wait much longer for this fight to take place. Abraham must be in really bad shape for him. It looks like Abraham’s management don’t want to take any chances by putting him in with a talented fighter like Dirrell and risk having Abraham get schooled the way that Mikkel Kessler was last month against Andre Ward.

Abraham can take off as much time as he wants to get to whatever condition he needs to be for the fight with Dirrell, but it won’t change a thing. Dirrell is still going to beat him. Abraham is too slow to beat a fast fighter with hand speed and defensive skills like Dirrell. Abraham moved up in weigh to take part in the Super Six tourney.

Previously, Abraham held down the IBF middleweight title for three years until relinquishing it because he was having problems making the 160 pound weight limit. One of the problems that Abraham suffererd from in the past year while fighting as a middleweight was a low work rate. That problem was supposed to have been cleared up when he moved to the super middleweight division. Unfortunately, Abraham had the same problem in his first fight in the Super Six tournament against American Jermain Taylor, throwing few punches in the fight and mainly fighting hard in the last few seconds of every round.

For the most part, Abraham stood with both gloves glued to his face trying to prevent from getting hit cleanly. Abraham was able to hurt Taylor with a big right elbow to the head in the 9th. With Taylor still looking a little shaky in the 12th, Abraham finished him off with a right to the head. Strangely enough, the judges had Abraham well ahead of the fight at the time of the knockout.

I couldn’t believe the scoring of the fight. I had the fight about even going into the last round because Abraham wasn’t fighting hard for the full three minutes of every round, and instead seemed to be trying to steal the rounds by throwing a lot of shots in the last 15 to 30 seconds.

It would appear that Abraham is still suffering from the same stamina problems that have plagued him in the last year at middleweight. Unless Abraham finds a way to get around that problem, he’s going to get a boxing lesson from Dirrell when they do eventually fight.

Dirrell lost his first fight of the Super Six tournament against Carl Froch by a 12 round split decision. Dirrell showed great talent and heart by fighting strong despite his opponent roughing him up repeatedly form rounds five until the eleventh rounds. In the end, I, and along with many other people, saw Dirrell winning the fight and capturing Froch’s WBC super middleweight title. However, two of the European judges’ scored it in Froch’s favor.

Ambraham has his own style. Scott G. must shut up, unless he’s willing to face Arthur in the ring. To make a prediction about somthing that you know nothing about, is simply stupid.

Abraham has flu, nothing to do with wanting more time. You’re a fool Gilfoid

Abraham by KO in this one, Dirrell is afraid of powerful fighters and i believe that Abraham is even more powerful than Froch. Jermaine Taylor looked afraid to commit to throwing anything heavy in their fight for fear of getting hit by one of Abrahams bombs. This fight will stink with Dirrell throwing himself to the floor and dancing around jabbing all night. Oh and all you haters, Froch won look on Boxrec!

  • No1JimmyWilde says:

abraham fights in spurts and although taylor was throwing most punches he never caught abraham with any clean and crisp punches, he never hurt him once. but i do think dirrell is fast enough and patient enough to capitalize off abrahams complatency. but abraham is very effective at what he does and he can hurt u.
ABRAHAM TO WIN BY LATE KO.

froch is still going to win the whole thing, the running scared tactics used by dirrel will have taught him a lot on how to effectivly round up a scared lamb and for the slaughter, he has had the advantage of being in with dirrel and witnessing wards tactics, he is going to man his way through everyone in there including the american fannys

  • abraham has to much experience!

  • N. Thomas says:

Dirrell has all the skills but not the balls. I think he’ll give anyone a hard time if he starts coming out to fight instead of just trying to dance. Ali could do it, but it doesn’t suit Dirrell, and he looks horrible doing it.

He needs to get the mentality of a fighter rather than just an athlete, and then he’ll be really special.

Abraham has just as much skill, but all in different areas than Dirrell. A true matchup of styles. I can see Dirrell pulling it off, but it’ll be a much tougher opponent than Froch. Froch was there to be hit all night long, but Abraham is a very defensive-minded fighter. Dirrell will have to get out to an early lead on points and force Abraham to go for the KO. That will be very hard to do though, because of Abraham’s defense and his power, which you can bet Dirrell will be acting very wary of. I’m predicting Abraham, UD. Possibly a brutal KO in the later rounds though.

Before the Super 6 had started, I didn’t believe either Dirrell or Ward would be in with a shot. But they have both put on very impressive performances in there opening bouts. Dirrell impressed me more than Ward though, he has very quick reactions and his head movement is great at times. However, if he is to beat Abraham, he cannot adopt the same strategy as he did against Froch. He will have to be aggresive from the first bell and try to break down Abraham’s defense. Should be a good bout.

  • Daniel Ciminera says:

even if it does get postponed until march, it’s not any longer than we have to wait for the other fights in round 2 so what’s the problem? as far as i can find, taylor and ward still havent even set a date yet.

i dont think its a question of getting into shape, all of these guys were in shape entering the tournament and are going to be in prime condition throughout.

abraham is thoroughly dedicated to the art and its pretty disrespectful to claim he is making excuses to get in shape to be honest. especially as you have probably never stepped into a ring yourself.

  • Lee shep says:

Haha 2 euro judges saw it 4 frochy boy hahaha

  • stinquer says:

BS. Abraham will flatten him. They will end up having but secks later, as Andre will pull his trunks down. They will make a lovely couple.
