Can Hatton take off enough fat to still be effective?

By Scott Gilfoid: In looking at recent photos of a well fed looking Ricky Hatton, I have to wonder whether he’ll ever take enough lard to be effective in the ring against anybody. I’m not even thinking about Hatton being good enough to beat a top fighter at this point, because of with that huge coat of fat that Hatton has his body in the past seven months since his 2nd round knockout against Manny Pacquiao, I don’t think Hatton can beat a top fighter any more. Hatton has hinted about making a comeback next year.

I’d like to see that happen just to see what Hatton can still do in boxing, but I don’t have a lot of confidence that Ricky can still make much impact against top fighters of the sport unless they match him carefully against another light hitter like Paulie Malignaggi. Hatton can still probably beat a fighter like that, but he’s going to have to take off some god awful weight. I can only imagine the hard work ahead of Hatton in having to strip of 40 to 60 pounds of pure sludge from his body.

Medically speaking, that can’t be good for you to have that kind of fat on you, and even when you take it off, it has a certain debilitating effect on a body. Have you ever seen a before and after photo of someone who took off a lot of weight? If you have, in most cases they older. It’s hard on a body to take off a lot of weight and I think it ages it. This is why it’s important not to get bloated in the first place.

Hatton seems to reward himself with food and drink after his fights. Don’t know why he does it, but it seems to be the case after every bout. In the case of his last fight, I suppose Hatton was drowning his sorrows in food and drink. I hope it helped him get over the loss, but it certainly didn’t help him any if he plans on fighting again. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. If Hatton wants a money fight against someone like Juan Manuel Marquez, then I think he needs to forget about it and stay retired.

Marquez is too good and will beat Hatton if they fight. What Ricky needs is an easy opponent from the UK or Europe to fight rather than rick getting flattened again. I think his punch resistance is gone and by facing a dangerous opponent like Marquez, Hatton will only end up getting knocked out again and sent into retirement with a loss. I’d like to see Hatton take on someone like Michael Jennings, who would pose little threat to knocking Hatton out.

If Hatton can beat him, then I’d like to see Hatton retire with a fight against Amir Khan. If Hatton could somehow stay in shape in between a fight with Jennings and bout with Khan, he might have a sliver of a chance at beating Khan. I doubt he would, but he’d have a chance if he could stay on his feet long enough to connect with Khan’s glass chin.

  • shabaz says:

what are you talking about can he take off enough fat?
he always gets fat between fights
losing his weight is minor for him

  • Bruno says:

Scott are you sure you weren’t looking in the mirror? Hatton just needs to move up a division or 2. After all Kevin Johnson should be about 8 foot tall at the weight he is.

If Ricky does decide to fight again, then it should be left to the BBB of C to make the decision to sanction his comeback fights very carefully. The BBBofC do take it very serious when it comes to the welfare of any boxer.Ricky hatton is no different to any other boxer in terms of his welfare.
In my opinion I believe Ricky has come to the end of the line and has no more to prove to anyone and should take a long look at the KO from the Pac-man and make the right decision to hang-up his gloves. He has been a very exciting fighter and it would be a tragedy to see him fighting again.
Ricky take along look at the knockout and forget fighting again.
If you continue fighting then you have no consideration for your family or the sport of boxing.

Witter will never happen on priciple. He talked himself out of a fight with hatton long ago… Such a shame, but that’s life…

I love ricky and I know he has done this in the past, but I think if he stayed fit he would do better.

I would also like to see him fight amir darren it seems alot of people are jumpin on the kahn bandwagon after his win over salita which to be fair was a brilliant domination performance however i think hatton still would have enough to walk through amir shots and pressure him and ko or tko him yes roach has the blue print to beat ricky but the game plan will be stuffed out of amir by round 2. I think marquez vs ricky would be one hell of a fight and a good thing for boxing.

i wonder, who ate all the pies.

“40 to 60 pounds of pure sludge from his body” – Love this line. True Hatton has always blown up between fights but he has never had such a period of inactivity (fighting or training wise). Add in the fact that he is 30 and his style of fighting is dependent on pressure and absorbing shots to throw shots (it’s the absorbing shots which is a problem now as his punch resistance has diminished) and I think that you can safely say that Hatton is close to being done.

He needs to fight Amir Khan. I would hate to see Hatton fight and loose again as his carrer has been a great one and he doesnt deserve it. Yes he can cut the weight in time he would shed the weight within a month its easy too loose when you exersise and eat well but i think he sould be within at least a stone before he was to start camp for the fight not the 2.5 he is saying he is over now. If he faught Khan he would win a make a mint. The only thing stopping the fight is Khan. Its clear to see whenever asked about the fight the coward doesnt want it. He knows he cant win as he fights weak fighters or over the hill fighters. The guy is a joke he never held a Brittish Title! Yet he gets more press than our Froch an world elite boxer. I think the fight would be great for Hatton however if not Id like to see him fight Marquez or Bradley. If he losses then he really needs to retire. X

Totally agree Del Boy at the end of the day Hatton has never been afraid to fight the best and his only two losses were against Mayweather and Pac-Man – the two P4P best fighters at each time.

He always bloats between fights and I like most don’t agree with it and I think it has shortened his career but he has several millions in the bank (more than 95% of boxers), is generally marketable like De La Hoya (which bodes well for his promotion company and general celebrity), and he lives like the rest of us between fights. Can’t be bad really can it.

I do think Khan is getting far too much credit also his career to date is quite ‘bloated’ and carefully matched. I actually think Hatton would knock him out given a tune up bout and with the right motivation. Khan like Paulie M doesn’t have the power to back Hatton up. Everyone thinks Hatton is shot because he got knocked out twice but this is Mayweather and Pac-Man we are talking about both future hall of famers.

Good shout Jamie. A fight with Witter would be good. May the worse man lose and retire.

  • MP says:

Better stay out of the ring Ricky you’re already a country mile away of your stupid mind anyway.

  • Oli says:

might aswel retire not good enough for elite class and too deluded arrogant and aloof for the class below that

  • del boy says:

Hatton always bloats after fights tell us something we dont no expert.I do agree he shouldnt do it and it must take its toll but i have to say he hasnt done bad 2 losses to the very best and gets to binge just like the rest of us .

Hatton is the 1 laughing !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ALAN BOSWORTH says:

scott, hatton would have to fight khan at 140lb,looking at him khan would run rings around him.khan to fresh to young to hungry to fast.hatton should stay retired or else he could regret it.greed kills

  • el tsunami says:

he better make it with marquez! so marquez can retire him for good!

  • josh says:

you dont have the confidence in him? you have never liked any british fighter

  • Jamie says:
