Boxing vs. Bloggers and Message Posters

By D. Thomason: I have given a lot of thought to the pending bout between pound 4 pound greats Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao and what stands out to me the most about the fight is how the biggest action might be taking place over message boards and blogs. It is no surprise that boxing is probably the most subjective of all sports as it pertains to deciding who the “best” is and this fight is no different.

Most casual boxing fans usually follow fighters for reasons other than their love for the actual sport and the fighter’s contribution to the sport. What I mean is a lot of these so called fans only watch their respective favorite fighter because they represent something to them beyond their skills in the ring which often times has to do with geography and what Country the fighter is from. A large number of Mayweather’s followers for the upcoming fight do so because he is the “American” and I contend the same can be said about many of Pacquia’s follows because he is their fellow countrymen. As I scroll the blogs and message boards it has occurred to me that people have made it their own personal fight to defend their respective favorite to win the fight which has created a whirlwind of action amongst the respective bloggers and message posters. I wonder how Floyd would be received by his Countrymen if he was from the Philippines and conversely I wonder how Pacquiao would be received if he was from the US.

Ultimately I think that the biggest statement that can be made once the fight is over and done with is not one fighter saying he is the best but the “I told you so” by the fans whose fighter goes on to win and to that I say, “To the victor goes the spoils.”

Manny is now one of the highest paid athlete in the world. Courtesy of one of the biggest US sport brand Nike. I wonder why Nike executives didn’t pick Floyd Jr. instead?

Furthermore, why is the Pacman considered the boxing savior by Time Magazine and not Floyd Jr.?

Arum and Schaefer should not feed the hand that fed them all these years. Vegas stuck with Pacquiao and Mayweather when they were small time.
Why texas now? Where was texas before Pacquiao became famous? Don’t Vegas deserve to host the fight considering the fact that it hosted Pacquiao’s fights when he was still unknown? They should have respect for Vegas.

I think being on cover of TIME MAGAZINE, few and rare article written by the NY Times and Wall Street Journal says, Manny’s popularity is now worldwide.. Need I say more.. Also, 2009 FIGHTER OF THE YEAR, AND possibly KNOCKOUT OF THE YEAR.

This site started all these non-sense…manuel perez and liam Santiago. When you write something about boxing, please present both fighters’ abilities…not your own opinion. I boxed in my early years, but I chose education over it. My father was an international kick boxer and my grandfather was a boxer. I certainly do not pick boxer based on his/her nationality; I pick boxers based on their abilities to box. I really do not care what they do outside the ring. What matters to me, is how they can perform in the ring. I’m a full bloodied Filipino and reside in the U.S. I do; however, like both Mayweather and Pacquiao. I have no prediction on this fight, but I hope both fighters will come out fighting they way the public expect them, too. May the best boxer win!

for those that say that manny its a humble person how about cheating on the wife? how about trying to get in to politics? humble people never get in to politic they know it will bring down all the values you have.

mayweather is not the best boxer on the planet bouth of them had ducked good fighters its a shame how people praise this kind of lamers that fight once or twice a year they would never compare to legends not even close!!!

So finally someone mentioned this. By this i mean the ferocious attempts of message posters to try and get the “one up” on other posters. Perhaps you could have extended this article somewhat so as to aid newcomers to this site. Aid them into grabbing heaps of salt to accompany their reading of articles on this website. Occasionally there are some really decent articles and then there are really awful ones.
This whole ‘need’ that fans experience to defend their heroes is in fact quite useless. It makes no difference to how ‘their’ fighter performs in the ring or out. If i go check out the quality of articles on websites like The Ring or TSS and compare it to this site well… i feel disappointed… with this site. In my humble opinion it might be beneficial to this site if the msg posters start to give some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and not just some rubbish about how this fighter is the best and this one isn’t.
It might even lead to improvement in the quality of articles we get to read here. So take it, don’t take it but, think before you write.

Floyd’s personality is an anti-thesis to a revered filipino. Whether it is true or not, the perception of Americans in Europe and Asia and Canada is not very good. Perception is everything, but sometimes there is tructh into them. Americans are perceived as arrogant, spoiled, unilateral, shoot first before asking questions, etc. etc.I want this and I want that. I’ll buy this and I’ll buy that. America is the greatest consumer and if America does not spend, the world goes into recession. Floyd is not just perceived as arrogant and boastful talkative and etc., he is definintely one. I remeber Wayne Gretzky, the greatest hockey player ever ( arguably), it’s more of a complement for him to hear that he is a nice guy than than to hear how great he is. You can be the best in whatever sports you do but if you are not humble about it, you fail. Nobody is perfect, but the kids look up to these sports figures and with their fame comes responsibility. These spoiled superstars are nothing but selfish, arrogant and irresponsible creatures.

Your assessment of the fans is pretty close but not that accurate. You’re right about Manny’s Filipino or Filipino-American fans, 99.9 % probably roots for him. On the other hand there is also a high percentage of non-Filipinos who are for Manny, which include Americans.

if you look into it both fighter have a upside or a down side.manny better not get in too deep in politic as the media feel their build him,and will try to destroy him if he err in anyway.
