Arreola vs. Adamek in April: Is Tomasz making a mistake by taking this fight?

By Jason Kim: Former light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek is looking to fight big Chris Arreola (28-1, 25 KO’s) on April 24th in a bout that could be a make or break fight for either of the two fighters. Adamek, 33, moved up to the heavyweight division recently to get bigger paydays against the big boys and has fought once, beating an old Andrew Golota in a 5th round stoppage in October in Poland. While Adamek looked good in putting his punches together and knocking Golota down a couple of times, he wasn’t facing anything close to a top contender in that fight.

However, that didn’t stop many of Adamek supporters from getting excited and proclaiming him as a future heavyweight champion based on that one fight. Adamek looked good in winning, but he was very hittable against the slow Golota and there’s questions out there whether Adamek has the size and power to compete with the bigger and better heavyweights. Before the Arreola fight comes off, Adamek plans on fighting Jason Estrada in February. That fight should give boxing fans a better gauge of how good – or not so good – that Adamek is. Estrada has very little power, but he can throw good combinations and might be able to test Adamek to see what he’s got.

Arreola, 28, is a tough opponent for Adamek, mostly because of Arreola’s huge size and power. Arreola may carry around a lot of fat on his frame, but he has a great deal of power to go along with that fat. Adamek hasn’t faced anyone nearly as strong as Arreola. Golota may have been decent puncher earlier in his career, but he’s not in the same class as Arreola when it comes to punching power.

Adamek has toiled most of his career against light heavyweights, but no one like Arreola. Chris was beaten by World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in a 10th round stoppage loss in September. Vitali stayed on the move for 10 rounds and was able to beat Arreola with shots as Chris surged forward. Vitali was able to do this because he had the reach and size advantage over Arreola. Adamek won’t have size going for him against Arreola and will have to come up with another strategy if he’s to come out of this fight on top.

Adamek punches good, but his power won’t likely have any effect on Arreola. Adamek does his best punching when he’s standing flat footed and standing directly in front of his opponents. If he does this with Arreola, it means that Adamek will be vulnerable to getting hit with Arreola’s big shots. I’m not sure that Adamek can beat Arreola if the two get into a war. Adamek has wins over O’Neil Bell, Steve Cunningham, Paul Briggs and Johnathon Banks, but those fighters are 50 pounds lighter than Arreola.

Adamek weighed 214 for his last fight against Golota. Even if Adamek comes in a little heavier than that against Arreola, he’ll still likely be giving up at least 30 or more pounds. Arreola does well against smaller fighters than him. It might not be good for Adamek in this fight.

If Arreola want to win the fight first thing need to stop eating hot dogs,Adamek will destroy this guy

why is it a mistake? adamek is an accomplished athlete and world champion. fighting arreola is the best ay to get the profile (mex-american fans), the money (HBO), the title shot (basically the fight is an elim).

surely it’s good that he’s keeping busy, taking dangerous fights, trying to carve his way to the top.

the golota fight brought him a lot of profile and fame at home. if nothing else, adamek had to contend with size and strength. i felt he used appropriate movement and combos, looking fast and furious. as with all boxers, he must work his way up. big lump (golota), talented fringe guy (estrada), heavy hitting contender (arreola).

IMO, this is the way to go. is arreola making a mistake? he got battered by a world champ in vitali and may get battered by a world champ (cruiser) in adamek.

Arreola is a pathetic excuse for a pro athlete. A true second rate butterbean!!

  • donkey c says:

Arreola likes(american meatloaf to much) fighting bums apart from his one shot! Fight a few more Americans?

  • Doctor says:

It would seem that the Klitschkos and Adamek have something in common, they are prepared to fight the best and get on with it as quickly as possible and with as little trash talk as they can manage.

  • Rob says:

If it’s true Adamek has a lot more guts and is a lot busier then that other moved up cruiserweight…
I doubt if it’s a good move because it’s very risky indeed, but if you wanna get noticed in the HW scene you have 2 options nowadays; Fight the best out there, or tell anyone you’ll fight the best out there…

  • Atos says:

Arreola will destroy Adamek, Tua and Piter. He is great fighter. He may lose only to Chambers or Kevin Jonson, because that guys are slik.

  • Ancient_Silence says:

I read somewhere that a prime heavyweight should weigh between 215 and 220. I don’t think Adamek needs to worry about coming in around that mark. Arreola well he is quite a slugger but after his break down and cry routine followed by statements about getting fit and losing weight and then not doing any of the above and actually weighing more for his next fight i find myself losing any respect i had for him before.
More power to Adamek if he can beat Arreola may the best man win.

Adamek is in the rankings and noticed by HBO for a reason.

  • fungi says:

Comparing Arreola to Tua,Chris is just a psy

  • puggy says:

Makes Adamek’s heavyweight campaign look legit to me. I think he will win against Arreola unless Chris comes in weighing around 228.

  • zee zee says:

fight david tua, or his is scared he will get KTFO.

tua is a real puncher not a fat baby slob who throws his weight around at the end of his fists,

chris areola vs david tua. winner = TUA KO
james toney vs david tua. winner = TUA TKO

james toney needs to put up or shut up,

  • John says:

    Adamek WILL DESTROY Arreola ..

  • siddy says:

    Adamek’s team.Arreola will bumhim

  • ZKO says:

This is a good choice by Adamek’s team. I think Arreola is there for the taking and it would show the real heavyweight potential that Adamek has.
