Williams-Martinez: When will Paul be appreciated?
By Eamon McDonald: With all the talk these days about Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather Jr. meeting next year, i for one am extremely excited about that matchup. But there’s another fighter on my radar who could also become the top pound for pound fighter on the planet….Paul Williams. Everyone is aware of how good a fighter williams is and yet somehow he doesn’t have anywhere near the following that Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. possess.
Williams will meet Sergio Martinez in the ring in a few weeks and I believe he will beat him and then go on to bigger and better things, the only problem is the fan following. Kelly Pavlik has a big following in Ohio and Williams could’ve put his name on the map with that win but now he’s fighting an Argetinian who will not enhance his following much if/when he beats him.
Williams is one of my favourite boxers because he is so good at what he does, he throws about a million punches per fight ( obviously nowhere near that amount, but it does feel like it), he can take a punch and he will take on all comers. He lost to Quintana and knocked him out in the first round in the rematch, I think that is a terrific accomplishment in itself.
Williams also beat Antonio Margarito which he did not get much recognition for. I would love to see him in the super six tourney but we all know that won’t happen but it would’ve been nice to see how he would’ve fared against the best in the division. I think he is capable of beating any fighter set in front of him and the way he can move up and down in divisions makes him all the more exciting. Watch out 2010, Paul Williams is coming.

PW is the best 150 pounder in the world. I think he is the only guy who could beat Pavlik at 160 AND Mayweather at 147. 168 might be a stretch, mainly because his power might not carry to that level. He is more of a volume puncher than a banger. However at middle weight or welterweight, he is the man.
Its a joke that the dude isn’t a no.1 contender in any of the divisions he can fight it. At the least belt holders would have to face him or be stripped if he was the mandatory.
I really believe Paul Williams will have a break out year in 2010. He can be avoided for so long and will eventually get the break he needs.
The problem with Williams moving down to welter is no one will want to fight him. The reach advantage he has is just too much. I mean seriously he would have at least a 4″ advantage over most people. And people who expect Pacquaio or Mayweather to fight him are just ridiculous. I mean seriously pacquaio at 5′6″ would barely be able to reach the guys head to punch and Mayweather wall a bit taller would have similar problems.
I agree I believe Williams should go down to Welterweight and fight, somebody will fight him, maybe if they have to fight him, but middle weight is dead, welterweight is where it is at.
Too many think Paul can just conquer everyone. Sergio takes this fight and the hype on him will start to calm down.
Oli is saying he should go down in weight Marvin.
oli i agree with you .paul williams is 6`2 and fighting these little guys. come on he should put on some weight
and pick on some fighters in a higher
weight and as tall.i just can`t give he props for beating on guys that is 5`5 and 5`7 and he is 6`2 come move up in weight and fight some guys at i will say 160 or 165 pounds.what do you think.
Williams is a freak of the best kind and I hope he manages to get the big fights he deserves. I wasn’t surprised Joshua Clottey crapped himself at the thought of it.
super six? he hasnt even fought at 168 pounds!
id rather he fought as a welterweight. Middleweight is a dead division with no talent in it and its so called champ kelly pavlik is obviously scared of paul williams and doesnt want to fight. Go back to welterweight and eventually the cowards will have to face him
I like Williams too,but don’t you think it might be a bit of a reach to have him in the super six right now? Granted he looked great against Winky, but he didn’t have to worry about Winky’s power since Winky hasn’t had a stoppage since 2002. Let’s see how he does as a middleweight before tossing him in with the elite.
