Will the winner of Pacquiao-Mayweather fight Mosley?

mosley456547By Eric Thomas: A question that has been on the minds of some boxing fans is whether the winner of the proposed Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao bout choose to do the right thing and fight World Boxing Association welterweight champion Shane Mosley or will the winner opt to ignore Mosley and go in a different direction? It would be hard to crown the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather winner the top fighter in the welterweight division if they leave Mosley as unfinished business. Of course, Mosley has to win his January 30th bout against Andre Berto for him to proceed ahead against the winner of Mayweather-Pacquiao.

However, many people are predicting that Mosley should be able to get past Berto without too many problems unless Mosley has gotten old since winning the WBA welterweight title with a 9th round stoppage over champion Antonio Margarito earlier this year. Mosley looks good otherwise and will be sitting pretty for a huge money fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao some time next year.

What leaves a fight like this open to question is the lack of a huge fan base for Mosley. He might be the best fighter – or close to it – in the welterweight division, but he doesn’t get the same kind of attention that Mayweather and Pacquiao get because his wins are less flashy in comparison. Mosley, up until recently, doesn’t talk a lot about himself and call out fighters like some of the boxers do.

And that perhaps has caused Mosley to be out of view by many boxing fans who otherwise would be aware of him. The squeaky wheel gets the attention in boxing and Mosley hasn’t been loud like some of the fighters in the sport. However, it would be hard to imagine that Pacquiao or Mayweather could get away with ignoring Mosley in the future if they do decide to continue with their boxing careers following their epic fight.

They won’t need the money that they’ll get in a fight with Mosley, but if they care at all about their legacy, they need to fight Mosley and make it clear who the best fighter in the welterweight division is. You can’t say that the Mayweather-Pacquiao winner is absolutely 100% the best fighter in the division if Mosley is still holding down the WBA title and defending it against all comers.

Mosley is too to be ignored and boxing fans won’t let the Mayweather-Pacquiao winner get away without saying something about it. Beyond Mosley, there really isn’t another big named fighter for Mayweather or Pacquiao to fight. Although that won’t stop Mayweather from still making a lot of money against one of the lesser known fighters. It would be bad though if he chooses to fight someone who is perceived to be a lesser fighter than Mosley.

There’s really only Mosley, Berto, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito and Zab Judah in terms of well known fighters. Saul Alvarez, an up and coming fighter, is still too young and too green for Mayweather or Pacquiao to fight at this time. Margarito is still under suspension and Clottey was recently beaten by Miguel Cotto in a 12 round split decision. Judah has lost four out of his last nine fights and hasn’t looked good at welterweight in a number of years.

  • SMG says:

When FMJ beats Pac there still will be questions about his legacy he defeated a part time fighter (ODH), JMM which was to small short and 5 in reach advantage, same thing will go with pac. Soon as FMJ fights Mosley then he will be remembered as an all time great.

  • SMG says:

jimbob Margarito beat cotto, cotto beats mosley, mosley beats margarito, this is boxing. Trying to say since FMJ easily beat JMM, then FMJ should have no trouble beating Pac then

  • motownhitman says:

What is it with you people saying..because x guy beat y guy z guy shouldn’t fight y guy? That is totally flawed logic. Floyd beat JMM who gave Pac big problems does that mean Floyd beats Pac easily? As for Mosley, Floyd called him out twice. Let’s be honest these Pac fans probably never followed Floyd so they have no idea that he called out Mosley TWICE. Do some research people.

  • jimbob says:

Pacquaio destroyed Cotto but Cotto beat Mosley in a unamimous decision. What makes you think that Mosley could beat Pacquaio?

  • scoopz says:

people call mayweather a chicken yet before he was the best in the world he called out all the best in the respected division why would you call someone out wen your the most wanted fighter in the world…..wen mayweather beats pacquiao easily somehow i dont see mosely standin a chance against either of them and mayweather will always be seen as the best of this era wen he beats pacquiao why waste time on a fighter who wont get the big crowds and the money which pretty boy wants

Pacquiao, 5′6 1/2. Paul William, 6′2. I don’t know about you guys but if ever Pacquiao fight William, it’s going to be like Duran and Hearns. Heck! I rather see Pacquiao vs Calzaghe atlist Calzaghe is only 5′11 Lol!

lol never mind i c how it works

testig – where do i sign up there is no log in!-?

  • dean says:

people can say forever this person or that person is scared or whatever, but there also has to be an upside to an elite fighter fighting a peticuler fighter! mosley is past his prime and unless he fights a huge name , little or no payday !! mosley in his prime DUCKED fighters like they do to him now !!!

  • Boxing Don says:

I know for a fact, Paul Williams will have no problem coming back to 147 and after he beats Martinez he will most likely call out the winner of Berto-Mosely. He also want a piece of B-Hop

  • mr rhythm says:

Mayweather was offered 12 million to fight the bum Baldomir, vs 8 million to fight the other bum Margarito. That’s not fear, that’s intelligence stupids!

  • mr rhythm says:

Shane ducked Williams, weasled out of the Clottey fight, refused two Floyd fights but Floyd is the chicken?

  • mr rhythm says:

You do know Mosely has a fight in January with a guy named Berto who is younger, faster, and probably stronger than anyone Mosley has ever fought?

  • suntellmoe says:

this is great…. boxing is back…!!!

  • ignorant perez says:

If Pacquiao win, I think he doesn’t need to fight mosley, since beating floyd will be the greatest gift he can give in boxing world. but if he loose, beating mosley can patch that hole floyd had given in his career.
For Floyd, win or loose, he should fight mosley, sad to say but beating Pacquiao still not enough to prove he’s the one unless he fight real and natural welterweights like mosley.

  • ed says:

mosley is floyds kryptonite!!! and he knows it

  • DOUGLAS says:

i really hope they dont take the chickens way out and retire i hear floyd might take the fight after but after getting that much cash the dude will probably retire he tends to get spoiled easily.. pac seems to have the balls to but who knows.. i honestly think pacquiao has the best chance beating mosley.. mosley might turn out to be floyds kryptonite

  • Pac vs Mosley says:

Honestly – I’d rather see Pacman fight Mosley. It’s a better fight. And if Pacquiao wins – he’ll be The Ring World Champion at Welterweight (they are Number 1 and Number 2 at Welterweight in the Ring Magazine).

Unfortunately, Pacman’s fight with Floyd is just too big to be set aside for any other fight. In case Pacquiao wins (Floyd style will be tough for MP) – I really really hope that he’ll finish his career with a fight with Mosley. Finish as the World Welterweight Champion. If that happens, there will be few doubters that he is at Ali’s and Sugar Ray Robinson’s level of greatness – and perhaps more.

  • roy says:

I don’t understand why mosley decited to go head with his twice postponed fight with Berto and announce it just before pac fight with cotto that same day just like floyd ,I cant believe he afraid, but he just miss a fight with pac for march.then a fight with floyd after tuning up in november would have been perfect.

  • realfighter says:

tres3 I could not say it better myself.

  • tres3 says:

Come on! Mosley has to beat PW before talking to PBF? when has PBF ever fought PW? if anyone should fight PW it’s PBF! you want recognition of being the best? then beat the best! P4P right! then fight PW at 154 and find out who really is P4P! and Mosley has fought up and down 147 and 154 so he has nothing else to prove, he has fought the best! wanna know why PBf wont fight PW? Cuz you saw what Pw did to another great defensive fighter in Winky! PBF is a straight duck! cherry picker! no more, no less!

  • 33 says:

pac-williams is more interesting than pac-mosley. no need for pac to face mosley. pac already badly beaten the man who beats mosley! pac williams will elevate pac to a legendary status. they can meet at 147. williams stated that he can go down to 147

  • sporty says:

cotto beats mosley, mosley beats margarito, pacquiao beats cotto, pacquiao might have a chance against mosley. if arums set aside his economics pacman might fight mosley before full-time congress politics.
    VERDICT: possible pacman-mosley late 2010.

floyd jr. ducks cotto, floyd jr. ducks mosley, floyd jr. ducks margarito, floyd jr. ducks mosley again, floyd jr. is trying to duck against pacman.
VERDICT: floyd jr. will retire ducking everyone claiming they are all on steroids =)

  • 33 says:

    pac-pwilliams is better than pac-mosley

  • hasbeen says:

People seem to be forgetting that SSM lost to MC. It was a close fight that I had scored 115-114 Cotto. I’m sure some people saw it differently because it was a very close fight. I simply thought that Cotto was able to out box Mosley for most of the fight. Cotto was able to out box Pacquiao for one or two rounds and the rest of the fight belonged to Pacquiao. I think that Pacquiao will defeat Mosley if and when they fight. If I’m wrong it won’t the first time.

  • pmcblack says:

Paul Williams will have a HARD time fighting @ 147 again……Manny might fight Shane but Floyd will not!!! It should happen but it won’t……Shane is feared period….that’s why it won’t happen…..the funny thing is that they both could possibly beat Shane but neither one of them really want to take the chance……..because they both could loose in a less than spectacular fashing…..

  • benzo says:

I keep telling you all ,PAC MAN and FLOYD they both are scared of MOSLEY they are not stupid just scared. They saw what he did to Margarita, and for PAUL WILLIAMS he is too damn tall to be fighting at welt-weight.

  • Gene says:

And in fairness with Mosley, both Pacquiao and Floyd opt to fight Mosley because that’s what everyone wants. This is boxing and fans deserve to see the best matches possible.

  • Gene says:

Floyd, thinks he is considered the best p4p boxer because of his undefeated record. He simply doesn’t care about what others say. But who cares about what he thinks. Fights that entertain fight fans and what excites them most count. I used to be a Floyd fan, I guess I am just simply convinced after Pac demolition of cotto that it’s not going to be an easy fight for Floyd against Pacman.

  • xxx says:

pacquiao may fight mosley if he win the question is does mayweather fight if he win over pacman

  • MBA says:

They won’t be needing Mosley to cement their place in history but Mosley needs any of the two to get more money than he had ever earned…sad to say but while he may be that good but he is not quite appealing to the boxing fans..he might as well retire..I think he is not in the same league as Floyd or Manny in terms of drawing power.

  • sporty says:

i hope this happens. i understand manny is quitting boxing win or lose against floyd due to his stint in congress. though i still see manny vs mosley but never floyd vs mosley. floyd already ducks mosley recently.

side note: bad news on floyd jr. manuel perez placed HER busted reputation on floyd jr. against the pacman. we all know what happened to all previous pacman opponents whom manuel perez put HER faith. perez is a bad omen to any boxer :)

  • NamCap says:

If manny wins I see him fighting Mosley but not Maryweather he`ll probably retire.

I see a possible Mosley – Pacman fight being as exciting as the Cotto – Pacmman fight.

Same as everyone i wish pacman wins this fight just to see him fight Mosley or williams

  • Theweather says:

Mosley needs to fight Paul Williams and then try to talk to Floyd.

  • lacer89 says:

mayweather will never fight a mosley caliber guy as he doesn’t have the heart of a real fighter. pac will but it will be at another ridiculous mannycatch-weight, dehydrating his opponent to later say he’s the best at 147…

  • gerry says:

If Mayweather wins, he can not duck Mosley because they are both regular welterweights. Pacquiao is retiring win or lose.

  • Anonymous says:

    you are forgeting paul williams

  • hasbeen says:

MC and MP are both B Arum fighters. If history shows us anything it is that Arum loves to have his fighters face each other on PPV. B Arum loves to double dip. “make money off of both fighters” I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t try to make a fight between MP and AM some where down the line.

  • John,e says:

Maywheather won,t he’s duck him all along Pacquiao
maybe as he’s seems to have more balls than Mavis Mayweather.

  • MannyPacquiao says:

I like the article and i see your point but i still don’t see Pacquiao or Mayweather fighting Mosley at all. You make sense but i just don’t see it.
