Why Floyd “Money” Mayweather Might have a chance against the Mighty Pacquiao
By Derrick Villanueva: I recently wrote an article entitled 5 Reasons Why You Should Bet on Pacquiao. I think it’s only fair to write a similar article for “Money.”
“Money” has Great Defense – I’ve never seen a better defensive fighter than Mayweather. Never. Maybe Ali in his early career, but that’s about it. “Money” is quick, slippery, and nigh un-hittable-like a Young James Toney on Meth. Those punches that do connect slide off or is rolled with, resulting in minimal or no damage. I hate to say it but Mayweather is nothing short of Brilliant in this department.
“Money” is an Expert Ring Psychologist – He will taunt you. He will make you angry. He will slip away and sting you every time you try to hit him with combos. He is Floyd Mayweather Jr. Ph.D. Watch as he leads the likes of Marquez, Hatton, and De La Hoya to their doom. One thing you’ll notice in all his recent fights is that he’s had all his opponents chase him around only for them to be smacked around time and time again with counters. He leads his opponents to believe that he’s trapped on the ropes and tires them out as he slips, slides, and finally leaves the ropes at a time of his choosing. Like his father, Mayweather Sr., Jr. understands and is a master of mind games.
“Money” is Greedy – “Money” loves Money. Money, however ignoble it might sound, inspires people to great heights. Give your employee the promise of a hundred dollars for the day and watch him improve his productivity by leaps and bounds during that day. Don’t do the same the next day and watch him go back to normal. Money keeps “Money” motivated (there’s no doubt and about that and nothing wrong with it,) and with the looming fight between Pacman and him possibly earning 150M or more, there’s no doubting what’s on “Money’s” Mind.
“Money’s” keys to victory are to utilize the full range of his defensive skills to evade, befuddle, and frustrate Pacquiao to the point that the Pacman stops following his “master’s” game plan and starts getting careless; and use his sharp counter punching to win by UD.
Pacquiao’s keys to victory is to cut off Mayweather’s escape routes, and not get frustrated with “Money’s” boxing skills. Solid hooks from either hand to Floyd’s face (right) and body (left,) and 8-10 hit combos may slow/hurt Mayweather down enough to immobilize him for a few seconds and “rope-a-dope” as can be seen sometimes in his fight with De La Hoya for a possible KO, TKO or UD.

@mayor
JMM is fat? WTF?!
One thing that angers me is the fact that people carry on talking about mayweather losing to castillo. Thats the only fight that springs to mind when mayweather is mentioned. what about pacquiao and his MANY disputed decisions? No one ever brings dat up. money is gonna smash this pacman into thousands of bits! Period!
Manny is the Bruce lee off boxing he will make a couble tatoos on Mayweathers face like he did to Cotto
Manny has always respected his opponents. It was never personal. Hence, he held back on a beaten delahoya and cotto. Watch the fights again if you do not believe me.
But this time around, he will not pull back. He will put the hurt on Mayweather. It’s pay back time for being accused of taking steroids by the Floyd Sr.
Chris I have to agree with you. I am not taking anything away from Pac but it seems like most of the Pac fans talk about Floyd as if he is just some bum. I tend not to down people before a fight because hey you never know what could happen. In the event that Floyd puts a hurting on Pac those who have talked about Floyd like he is a bum will then have to make excuses. I am one that doesn’t like to make excuses so I’ll simply say I think Floyd is the better fighter but if all things are equal and he loses than so be it.
If nobody agrees with me, then ask Manuel Perez or Liam Santiago. They’re the best sports writers here at boxingnews24. They could be the best sports writer and sports analyst of any boxing site and sport corners.
I think Floyd will KO Pacquiao. Floyd is too much skill for Pacquiao. He even played with Marquez. And considering Pacquiao have a hard time with this mexican fighter. As for Cotto and Mosley, they’re just a waste of Floyd’s time because they’re way behind skill wise. That’s why he did not fight them even the money is better than fighting Marquez. This simply shows that Floyed is not only for the money. Otherwise he would fought Cotto or Mosley instead of Marquez. He fights for legacy. So he fought Marquez because he is the nearest fighter to his skill level. As for Pacquiao, Marquez is even way too better than him. Marquez was robbed twice when he fought Pacquiao.
8-10 hooks to the body and head of Floyd with both hands … when have you ever known a fighter of any generation to put that much on Mayweather without taking some damaging counter punches ?
hahaha! to compare PBF alongside leonard and ali is hilarious. those two have the heart, skills and intelligence.. PBF have the skills and intelligence. too bad he aint got the heart. guys.. you know why Ali is considered the best.. because he fought and demolished “the toughest fighters” in his generation. i cant say the same about PBF.
*ALI is THE BEST! I hope MOSELY wins his next fight*
I am shocked at the level of delusion expressed by some of you on here, especially the Pacman fans !
Floyd is on a different level to all fighters out there currently. Pacman will be out-boxed, out-thought, out-punched and ultimately either Ko’d or will quite on his stool from the beating laid on him, make no mistake !!
Yes, Manny could try to cut the ring down and limit Floyd’s escape routes, but then he would need to get very close to pound Floyd’s body with hard shots and maybe try and bring his very fast uppercut through the middle of Floyd’s guard … easier said than done of course because Floyd has game plan A through to Z. I just don’t see Manny being able to c handle Floyd’s unique, elusive style.
I go for Floyd within 10 rounds, with either a straight KO of Manny or with Manny quiting on his stool.
Richard I agree, the fact is if Floyd beats Pac, Berto/Mosley and even P Will he won’t get the credit he deserves partially because of the persona he has created. Floyd is my favorite fighter/boxer not because of his personality but because of his gifts and talents.
nepster, my point is as far as figuring out a game plan to defeat a fighter is easier to come by if the fighter has actual lost. I understand DLH is not the same fighter as Pac but frankly some of the advantages DLH had when fighting Floyd, Pac won’t have…reach and size, I don’t see Pac getting Floyd up against the ropes much. Styles make fights and up to this point, no style has worked against Floyd but a couple have worked against Pac.
over the last 50 years only three boxers have had it all – 1. Ali 2. Leonard and now 3.Mayweather
They can throw any punch from any angle in any starting position. Most boxers look to position themselves text book style before throwing a particular punch.
Not only will Money beat the Pac man but make him look quite ordinary doing it – like Mozart and Van Gogh Money will be properly appreciated when he really retires and yet people just do not understand – here is one of the top 5 fighters of all time
Sorry – Morales has never fought OVER 135. A split decision loss is ALMOST winning.
Sorry – and that should be JMM never fought OVER 135. And YES, a split decision loss to Mayweather with one against him being 113-115 in favor of Mayweather is ALMOST winning.
Motownhitman – true, you can’t compare ODLH fights because of weight, but the same can be said for JMM who has NEVER fought at 135. Roger Mayweather would be an idiot to use the same game plan as the Morales -Pac 1 fight as Manny’s a COMPLETELY different fighter. It won’t be a walk in the park for Pacquiao, but it won’t be a walk in the park for Money either.
This fight will be a tight one I think you have to back money just for his defence and slick slick skill.
Please check out my predicition of the Amir Khan vs Dmitriy Salita.

Pacquiao will KO Pretty Boy by the 9th round, guaranteed!!!!! Pacquiao is a true fighter that loves the sport, Pretty Boy is just in this for the money, don’t take me wrong Floyd is good but he has NO HEART !!!
Daud..I agree. It is difficult trying to use a rationale thinking when dealing with people who are blinded by bias.
The ppl on this site are so biased against Floyd it makes no sense. Floyd has been hit in the face before, bled(check the Marquez fight), fought plenty of fighters bigger than him, and faced many tough fights. Manny is a flash in a pan and is not even the toughest fight for Floyd.
I keep reading people comparing the fights that they each had with De La Hoya…unfortunatley you can’t. the different weights made for completly different fights. That is the same reason you can’t look at the JMM fights, because of the weight difference. People keep mentioning speed? They will each face the faster fighter either of them have ever fought against that night. They are both lightning quick. PBF is to smart and uses his shoulder to well on defense. Manny will get to him more than anyone has recently. I want Pac to win but UD 8-4 PBF, he is just to skilled.
Ok so do you think Manny will have better success over Floyd than he did over DLH or Cotto? Now if you have a preference for fighting styles that’s one thing, however try not to be blinded by your style preference. You are speaking as if Floyd is just some run of the mill fighter. First of all DLH did not “almost” beat Floyd. Second, Floyd at least fought DLH at DLH’s natural weight. Last time DLH fought at 147 was against Gatti back in 2001. DLH fought his last 8 fights about 150 fighting twice at middleweight, only to come down to fight at 147..I think its safe to say DLH was a shell of himself. As for game plans, using your theory, since JMM almost beat Manny, couldn’t Roger implement a similar plan to beat Manny or for that matter implement the plan used by Morales in their first fight?
Mayor…what evidence do you have that Manny will be able to throw an 8-punch combo at any time against Floyd? If you were being unbiased and objective you would think twice about your DLH almost beat him. When Floyd fought DLH that was his first and only fight at 154. As for Manny vs. DLH, before that fight DLH last fought at 147 in 2001 against Gatti so its safe to say that was not a weight he was comfortable at.
You will see what hitting air round after round will do to Pac’s stamina. The key for Pac is to pin PBF to the ropes, which he cannot do against the faster footed Floyd.
Y’all know what P4P really means when PBF toys with Pac for 12 rounds… or less. PBF by KO/TKO 9-11.
I’ve no doubt “money” will win fight. His defence and ring intelligence will prevail. I respect the Pacman (and he is one of my favorites), but one needs to just watch the fight with Cotto to see that he relies on his unorthodox stance and angles to flustrate opponents into becoming careless. His favorite left hooks are usually unleashed when he is at 90 degrees from the other guy who won’t see him throw it. He chooses to throw his punches when the opponent is preparing to unleash, making him look faster, but that is exactly what “money” – watch the Hutton knock down. Miguel Cotto confessed that he was not seeing where the punches were coming from, a testimony of Manny’s hiding tactics. Floyd is another phenomenon guys. Wait and see!
i agree about everythin you said. jeez. “manny” has to learn patience if he wants to beat “money”. money will dodge and dodge and try to land a good counter punch. roll his shoulder to protect his pretty face and body. but i’m excited to see them fight, they are both known for their speed. but money is defense, manny is offense..
i hope manny wins.. so money will learn the value of defeat. and maybe, he’ll then grow enough balls to fight mosely…. wahahahha… be damed his evasive answers that mosely aint good enough for him.. its more like.. he aint good enough for mosely.
might ??? floyd will control the fight start to finish …
I’m so glad that Money came out of his retirement. With the way things went, Pacman vs Money is inevitable. Let’s get it on, Money vs Manny!
Everybody knows if you talk to much you will make your last day forever in shame
Manny was able to tee off on Cotto who is about 10x’s slower than Floyd. Does anyone really think Manny will be able to tee off on Floyd like he did Cotto? Floyd has one of the highest boxing IQ’s which needs to be taken into consideration. Cotto slow and a plodder and if he was able to keep boxing he could’ve won, however he doesn’t have the same discipline that Floyd has. Floyd is less likely to be taken out of his game plan than Manny.
PERNELL WHITTIKER HAD BETTER DEFENSE THAN PRETTY BOY
floyd has fought bigger and smaller fighters . most everyone is going to have more difficulty with a larger fighter..but floyd always wins !! he adapts to each fight ..he has the better skills to win this fight , believe it !!
here we go again! you guy’s never learned.once again, just watch and learn from pacquiao…I don’t see why you guy’s still believing that mayweather can beat pacquiao! it’s 12 rounds guys! it is impossible for pacman not to hit mayweather a one solid punch. i mistake and his dead…
When last did Floud fight a bigger figher than himself maybe once, his only taken on smaller fighters that he nkow he can win RUN FLOUD RUN
Floyd will never stop Manny his fast and will caught him with punches but Cotto caught him alot and coulnt KO him.Floud will get punched by Manny 3 times more than any fight in his live and will run run run.Marguez is at his best a 130pound fighter so please people dont comparing floyds fight with Marques to a fight with Manny, Manny will destroy him within 3 Rounds. At 140 Marquez is nothing and if the Hatton/Marquez fight happens people will see how bad is Marquez at 140-147 because Hatton will KO him within 5 rounds
This will be such a hard fight for Mayweather, but I still believe he will win. When Pacquiao comes forward, he leaves himself open and makes a lot of mistakes. You could see that in the 2nd round with Ricky Hatton, he got caught coming forward with counter-punches.
Now if he is getting caught by counter punches in the 2nd round with Hatton, Mayweather is going to land whenever he feels like it. Floyd Mayweather 11th round stoppage.
If those guys running the show out there don’t make this fight happen, it will be a tragedy for all boxing fans, Pac or PBF fans or neutrals alike. A sport like this needs to have the best fight each other to really make the world excited – to revive and push the sport to the great heights it once had. Without this, I see UFC gradually getting more and more interest and grabbing fans from boxing, unless UFC manages to screw up thru stupid referreeing/judging or setting up lame match-ups. My fingers and toes are crossed that Pac and PBF get to fight.
My gut says Pacman. Truly amazing guy, will probably be able to take any punch you can throw at him. Which means he’ll be able to push THRU the defense/counters and into perfect range for multi-hit combos. Bring on a 10 hit body combo finishing with uppercut. At least, that’s what I hope happens. Honestly who can predict this one? Everyone has 50% chance of being right so let’s not hate on each other for whatever fighter we back, or what logic we use. It’s a coin flip. I expect a close and entertaining fight, I don’t think it will be as boring as some commentators say. Pac is always interesting coz he will go for it. It will be enjoyable to see some great defense and some great offense. I do see that a defensive fighter can win if he counters and just scores more points, but doubt he will get the knockout. Pac style, on the other hand, should give himself some opportunities to KO.
Mayweather is the favourite in my view.
Pacquiao is awesome and will give Mayweather hell with his speed, relentless workrate and in out footwork.
BUT firstly we have seen between Marquez and Cotto the ways in which Pacquiao can be beaten and outboxed although neither could sustain it to beat him.
Add this to the fact that Mayweather is a master of the ring. his speed matches Pacquiao and his defence is much better. Mayweather excels in his anticipation, he seems to know what will be thrown and counter it before the opponent has even thrown! Mayweather also has accuracy and timing that is brilliant.
Its a real dream match up which I see Mayweather is favourite for although Pacquiao is far from without hope.
Just look what Pac did to Cotto. Even PBF was ducking Cotto. But Pac made it an easy work. I dont think PBF would last for the whole 12 rounds and it may be an easier fight for Pac than his last fight with Cotto.
i think pacman will be punished against floyd jr basing on the fight between marques and mayweather coz pacman got a hardtime for marques in their 2nd fight much more with floyd jr…pacman is strong but one sided boxer but floyd have much more skill and a technician.i really dont admire the victory of pacman bcoz of the cathweight deal in the cotto pacquiao fight
Mannys not Zab,Cotto did KO Zab and Manny TKO Cotto,Floud coulnt even KO Zab.Floud is fast and a good boxer(Not Fighter)but the first time Manny rocks him he will run run run.Floud can run but he can not hide for 12Rounds.Manny will hunt him down and kill him
Floyd Mayweather had trouble against BIGGER aggressive fighters… Are ya’ll m’fers slow?? Floyd has never had trouble with a little man and Zab was the faster man (IMO) and he was only able to get two rounds in the beginning… No need in speculating though… We shall see!!
Manny did fight Marquez at 126 and 130 and he gave him a hard fight, but at 140 and 147 Manny will Ko him within 3 rounds.I would like to see Manny fight Floud, then unify the WW by fighting the winner of Mosley and Betro and then his last fight must be Marquez so that he can KO him like he did with Hatton.Manny is like hopkins said the true Bruce lee of boxing
Floyd’s so called defense is only good against conventional boxers. Manny is not a conventional boxer by any means.
Floyd hasn’t been REALLY tested on the chin. If Pacman can hit him for once eh will be in trouble. Look at the KD on Hatton and Cotto. And Pacman loves to hit like that.
PBF does not know what getting hit in the face is; hence he is called Pretty Boy Floyd.
The moment he gets a bunch of hits in the face that will result in some swelling or some blood perhaps, he will surely be rattled and he will lose his cool. That will be his demise.
When that happens PBF will mean Pretty Beat-up Face.
From what I’ve seen in the JMM fight, I don’t think Floyd is capable of knocking out a real WW let alone knock Manny (ask Cotto). On the other hand Manny has the knock out punch on either hand. Floyd’s knocking power is only good thru the LWW division. Remember Floyd hasn’t KO’d a real WW, that’s why he keeps avoiding them. He might have avoided Cotto, but if he thinks Manny is a walk in the park, he could be in for a long night.
This author had no clue of what he was writing about… Mayweather had difficulty with aggressive fighters. According to so many people, boxing experts, HBO commentators who had seen his fight with Castillo, Floyd had lost but robbed by incompetent judges. He was knocked down too by a side body shot by Castillo but the referee was too slow to see it and said it was a slip and Floyd said it was a low blow… check and watch the fight in youtube this fight and you will see he got hit so many times with hard shots with Castillo. With Pacman’s fast too hands Floyd will be mauled badly. His face will be cut or bloody if he goes the distance otherwise a knockout.
cant go 2 fisted 8-10 punch combos against floyd , manny will be wide open and get timed by counters over and over again by this once in a life time defensive counterpunching boxing wizard.
I almost laughed when a boxing analyst said that Mayweather Jr would win against Pacquiao because Jr was a better DEFENSIVE fighter. WTF! Between two equally good fighter, nobody will win just because he’s good at dodging punches! If all scores are equal, in the end the more aggressive fighter wins!
I’ve watched Jr hit the bag and mittens, and i’ve seen Pacman. Slow vs fast. Big vs small. Between a BIG baseball bat and a small 9mm bullet which would you prefer to be hit? SPEED=POWER.
everytning you are saying is true including the “greedy” part, thats why i always want to see him get beaten. manny & roach like ali & dundee love the sport for what it is. if manny uses his ability and sticks to the game plan that roach puts out then he has a good chance to beat money. when paid mercenaries come up against a well armed and motivated adversary they tend to run.
we need more writers like u here
If Mayweather can hurt Pacquiao then he can win by points, if he can not do that then Floyd is n bg trouble. Floyd doesnt want to be hit on this face and no one really hurt him because of his defence but not with Pacquiao. Pacquiao will just swng and sure he will hit Floyd anywhere. Pacquao by UD (only because floyd wll run)
id dont think so
yea i think floyed is going 2 b 2 much 4 manny he’s not going 2 let manny hit his body 4 that 2 happen manny would have 2 find a way 2 get inside and with floyed’s longer arm’s it’s going 2 b hard 2 do with out taking 1 to 2 shot’s each time
Don’t be surprised when Floyd brings Manny crashing back down to earth with the schooling he will give him!!
