What does Ward’s win over Kessler say about Calzaghe?

ward3333By Scott Gilfoid: American Andre Ward looked incredible in taking apart World Boxing Association super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler in a one-sided 11th round stoppage last Saturday night in their Super Six tourney bout in Oakland. So impressive was the domination by Ward over Kessler, who came into the tournament as the number # 1 choice by many boxing fans to the one to win the Super Six tourney. It’s impossible not to look at Ward’s monumental win over Kessler and not compare it to the close 12 round decision that former WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe got over Kessler in 2007.

Calzaghe, a fighter that many people see as the best super middleweight that ever breathed, had an incredibly tough time against Kessler and beat him by a four round margin on two of the judges’ scorecards and a six round margin on another. I scored it much closer with Calzaghe winning by one round. Whatever the case, you can’t begin to compare the impressive performance that Ward put in beating Kessler black and blue and the fight with Calzaghe and Kessler. Calzaghe was forced to go life and death with Kessler in order to get the win.

The Kessler fight is arguably the best win of Calzaghe’s career you would think You certainly can’t consider the 43-year-old Bernard Hopkins or the then 39-year-old Roy Jones Jr. comparing to the win over Kessler. Aside from that, Calzaghe has wins over Jeff Lacy, Byron Mitchell, Charles Brewer, Richie Woodhall and Chris Eubank, all good fighters but probably none of them in the class of Kessler.

Calzaghe fought Eubank at the very end of his career. But in looking at how badly Ward dominated Kessler, you have to now wonder what would happen if Calzaghe hadn’t retired recently and had stayed on and fought Ward. Based on what I saw last Saturday night, I see Calzaghe losing every round of the fight and possibly getting stopped by the 9th or 10th round.

Before you discount what I’m saying, you have to realize that I got the Ward-Kessler prediction perfect. I predicted that Ward would dominate the entire fight and I got it down perfectly, so I know what I’m talking about. What would have happened if Calzaghe had been in the ring with Ward instead of Kessler? With the incredible hand speed, movement and power of Ward, I think Calzaghe would have been in deep trouble and would have found himself in a sinking ship without a paddle. It would have likely been dire straights for Calzaghe.

In looking at Calzaghe’s resume beyond the aforementioned fights I listed above, he faced fighters like Omar Sheika, Mario Veit (twice), Robin Reid, Evan Ashira, Peter Manfredo Jr., Kabary Salem, Mger Mkrtchyan, Sakio Bika, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Tocker Pudwill, Will McIntyre, David Starie, Rick Thornberry and many more fighters similar to them. I’m afraid that none of those fighters compare to Kessler in talent.

Bika is a good fighter but I think Kessler is far better. Now what does that tell us that Ward was able to totally dominate Kessler while Calzaghe had to struggle to beat him? I’m no rocket scientist but for me, it tells me that Ward is better than Calzaghe and would have probably beaten the stuffing out of Calzaghe if he had decided to stick around and take part in the Super Six tourney.

  • Scott Gilford = Fan Dan says:

Not much Kessler was on top form wen calzaghe met him and kessler has looked poor since calzaghe edged him to victory and different styles have different outcomes P.S Scott Gilford is a joke u shud stop writing cos ur gash haha

  • AnthonyW says:

Lets see if Ward goes on and defends his title for over a decade…at the moment he is a World Champion with no defenses to his name. Keeping hold of a title for over 10 years, even if the competition wasnt the greatest takes a great deal of heart, desire and ambition. I still believe if Calzaghe would have stepped up his opposition a bit earlier in his career he would have beat them all…bar Jones, although I think it would have been a closer fight with both in or close to there prime.

  • pol says:

it says nothing styles make fights , all fights are different ,poor piece scott

  • calzaghe#1 says:

    46-0-0
    ENOUGH SAID!!!

  • Mong says:

Big yourself up mate with your predictions, big yourself up!

This is another pathetic excuse of an article, Calzaghe finds a way to beat any fighter put in front of him. Ward wouldn’t stand a chance. He’s quick but he’s not nearly skilled or unpredictable enough to keep Calzaghe guessing for the whole fight.

  • scoopz says:

personally i dont rate calzaghe he was a champion in a division full of b grade fighters at best and was never truly tested (kessler being an exception) and how ward took a one sided fight i find it convenient that calzaghe has retired before these guys in this tournament could get their hands on him and see whether or not calzaghe is a truly great fighter

  • Lee C says:

    absolute nobhead
    Calzaghe would of murdered ward
kessler didnt look anywhere near as dangerous against ward as he did against calzaghe

  • Benjamin says:

How can you not count calzaghes win over hopkins as a credible victory? in his next fight bernard took apart kelly pavlik, this is the same pavlik that many claimed would demolish calzaghe.
i sometimes think that you write articles so inadequate to get british fight fans riled and commenting.
    you are a clown

  • mark says:

my intensions were not to discredit joe, even though it came out that my. for that i apoligise.

but guys joe does not rate with the greats full stop. he is pitter patter, really good hand speed and athletic but no real power or prowess of a true champoin. come on.

if he were that great he would have stoped a shot jones and a 44 year old b hop! come on!

  • NFJ says:

58 comments and none backing your article scott. does that not give you an indication to how poor your boxing knowlege really is? GIVE IT UP SON YOUR ALL WASHED UP!

  • Andrew Evans says:

Joe Calzaghe would use his head without headbutting. Every fight I saw of Joe he would stand and trade and was the busiest fighter I ever saw for the whole 12 rounds as well. Look how he took out Lacy he was an up and coming young American star wasn’t he?

  • Stuart Gant says:

This is so biased. Everyone on boxingnews24 have been saying after Kessler’s recent fights that he has looked slow old and poor. Calzaghe did this to him. Calzaghe fought Kessler at Kessler’s prime and ended his career. Ward just beat a Kessler who has never been the same since Calzaghe. Ward looked very good but comparing that to Calzaghe is ridiculous. Also why write off Calzaghe’s victory over Hopkins just cause of the age. Not long ago Hopkins played with the so called “best middleweight out”. Was Pavlik just another overrated overhyped American boxer.

  • mazza says:

‘Before you discount what I’m saying, you have to realize that I got the Ward-Kessler prediction perfect. I predicted that Ward would dominate the entire fight and I got it down perfectly, so I know what I’m talking about’

You predicted this fight right, thats gotta be about 1 in 20 predictions right. A retard flipping a coin would probably have a better predictions record than you

  • 43re says:

Kessler got a huge cut above his eye from the middle rounds and this was from a dirty headbutt. Kessler started slow as he always does but this time he couldn’t get into the rhythm because ward was cheating. calzaghe would move his head unlike kessler and throw a thousand more punches than ward.

Old calzaghe would win by a very wide UD.

  • gilfoidhater says:

kessler was at his peak around the time he fought Joe, now he is getting older obviously time is taking its toll on him. you just cant stand the fact that British fighters are named the best!! and anyway ward’s fight with kessler was stopped due to a cut whats so amazing about that? and Ward’s performance wasn’t amazing at all with all the ‘accidental’ head butts, he looked like a f****** bull out there!

  • Muzza says:

Oh here we go again Calzaghe bashing. Will it ever end!? Now Wards better than him cos he wins a fight by running and headbutting against a washed up Kessler. When Froch knocks Kessler out in 8 rounds what you all gonna say then?? Does that make Froch better than Ward and by your twisted logic better than Calzaghe?? Dont be stupid and get caught up in the Idiot rantings of Mr Gilfoid as it always seems to end with him and the rest of his idiot Disciples running down a British fighter. This man or Boy?? is a disgrace to Boxing 24 and to the American people with his underlying Racism towards British fighters and British fight fans. The sooner this Maggot is kicked off this site the better.

  • Ukansodoff says:

    CALZAGHE IS RETIRED> RETIRED>

Re fookin tired. Which is good for this lot in the tournement cuz nonody in it could beat him.

  • hasbeen says:

I could take a crk wo teach her the ten point must system and she would more than likely do a better job of scoring a prize-fight than you would Scott.

  • Jake318 says:

You cant compare the fights because kessler looked half the man he normally was before the fight even started . kessler looked unimpressive in his last 2 outing prior to the Ward fight . Dont read too much into Wards performance . After kesslers .. tune up.. fight the handwriting was already on the wall.

  • Matt says:

Ward to win every round against Calzaghe and then stop him in the later rounds……..hahahahaha.

    Keep the jokes coming.

Name me a fight where (a) Calzaghe gave every round to his opponent and (b) was stopped in the later rounds??

Joe finished his career 46-0-0, he had a great chin and often threw over 1000 punches a fight.

All credit to Ward for his win against Kessler, he looked good and sharp, but Kessler was dire in that fight, with seemingly no gameplan.

Lets give it a couple of years and see where Ward is before we start ridiculous talk about him stopping Calzaghe.

  • Dave Stevens says:

You really are a muppett Scott

Calzaghe is the best supermiddle weights the world has seen for a long time.

Dont you dare compare WArd to Jo

  • lee says:

i’d say it says more about kessler than calzaghe. it confirms that kessler is always going to be out boxed by a more technical boxer.
its alot like froch. if you put them in a brawl you would have to back them but if you put them in a fight with a master technician then their not going to do well unless they can catch some big shots.
in my opinion the only difference between ward and calzaghe is calzaghe did it with alot more style and alot less getting hit.

  • ben says:

wtf calzaghe killed kessler!! Jus cuz it went all the way dont mean it was a close fight, kessler gave problems to calzaghe in the 4th round thats it! The rest joe smashed him

  • David says:

I would think it’s only you and anybody else whose unfortunate enough to have such a small amount of intelligence, who questions calzaghe after that result.

  • ste says:

kessler was at the top of his game when he fought calzaghe when he fought ward he looked like a spent force. if joe calzaghe was in the super 6 he would make hamburger meat out of all the fighters in it.

  • mark fletcher says:

Joe Calzaghe would have beaten Ward, stopped Taylor and would have beaten Dirrell, but that would be similar to his fight with David Starie, fighting a negative opponent who runs away so probably points.

  • ROGERS21 says:

i know what it says gilford that calzaghe beat kessler when he was in his prime and undefeated, i dint bother reading the article as its probs wank like all ur others. ( :

  • The Judge says:

Dont believe the hype! Ward WILL lose his unbeaten record in this tournament at some stage.

  • Anonymous says:

thats y lacey brewer mitchell all went home battered. joe was past his best against bhop and jones but still won.

  • Anonymous says:

mark , hopkins tried conning the ref 2 get rest bites against joe. u cant fight guys who avoid u eg. pavlik taylor hopkins, all yanks, wot a coincidence

  • shawn says:

calzaghe’s win was ten times as impressive. calzaghe never held and there were no headbutts or cuts in that fight.

ward would have still one without the holding but we found out kessler can’t fight inside at all.

calzaghe-kessler was a straight up boxing match and calzaghe put on one of the most impressive performances i’ve ever seen.

if ward used the same tactics as calzaghe the fight would have been much closer.

also I don’t think the kessler that fought ward was the same one that fought calzaghe.

still ward was pretty impressive but if the holding and headbutts become a patern in his fights i dont think i’ll watch much more of him after the super six

  • Tim says:

Ward would beat the vastly over rated Calzaghe. Calzaghe was the most cleverly managed fighter of all time…faced shot fighters and over rated bums his whole career..

  • mark says:

ps someone earlier said you cant hand pick your fights for that long? hahahahha…

what BS! LOOK AT HIS RECORD AND THE FIGHTERS HE FOUGHT!

the main boxers at his time were in the states and he avoided them till they were shot or old end of story..

  • mark says:

guys i not a hater of joe, i think he was a good boxer but very limited and got managed so well.

his promoters and managers need a pat on the back cause they set this guy up beautifully!

good boxer, very good boxer but not great guys please…

like i said look at his record…. shot fighters, fighters past the primes, fighters that were overated or that were just not good enough.

  • mark says:

joe cal was the most overated fighter ever!! come on guys who did he beat in THEIR primes??

roy would have KILLED joe in both there primes, and anyone that thinks different is an idiot or just a joe fan! hopkins would have to and i believe he beat joe in there fight! joe was the one that was hurt and got points only through what i call pitter patter combos that do nothing more than look good but have little effect!

thats the truth guys and im not a hater but joe was a pitter patter boxer! where is joes highlight reels if he was so great? you wont find any cos there are none!

look at his record! who did he fight! kessler would have been his best, but hes not going to be remembered as a genuine great! not by a long shot.

come on you brits face the facts and look through the BS. i think 3 or even possibly 4 of the super six would of beaten joe. guys in the prime!

  • ZKO says:

When the super six tourney is done, the question will be whether Calzaghe comes out of retirement to face the winner. Ward’s speed does pose an interesting style for Calzaghe. Calzaghe never really fought the Sugar Ray Leonard type fighter.

  • A Boxing Fan says:

The only way to stop him writing this drivel is to boycott it. All of us checking in to see how stupid Scott is only prolongs his pathetic enterprise. I, for one, am out. Silly site. Bye everyone.

  • Anonymous says:

kessler only got stopped because ward kept butting him on purpose, all ward and dirrell want 2 do is run, cant remember calzaghe ever running 2 win a fight. scott u know nothing nobhead

  • Davey says:

Hey all i predicted Scotty would write this article go back track and see.

  • I think you are right Scott.. Great article..

    M

  • adam says:

What would have been the point in joe taking part in the super 6? wouldn’t have made sense for his career or financially. undisputed super mid champ, wbo champ 11 years beat everyone the divison had to offer, taylor wouldn’t step upto super mid to fight him neither would pavlik or b hop. Eevntually bhop agreed to fight him at light heavy, the same bhop though aged 43 ranked number 2 in the pound 4 pound rankings. He got to fight the p4p 2nd best fighter around in a new weight division, for a world tittle, in america for first time for 4million dollars so why would he fight a load of young guys for peanuts and would have been 38 for most of the fights.

  • Mr_A says:

The Kessler fighting Calzaghe and the one that fought Ward were two different fighters completely.

If Clazaghe fought the one that Ward fought it would have been a KO win for Joe well before the 11th round.

  • jigg says:

    dont like you gilfoid.
    but i must agree.
    ward would beat calz!!

  • sacha says:

    joe calzaghe 46-0000000000

the record says it alone you cant hand pick 46 fights and stay champ for ten years they dont allow it just doesnt happen fact

if ward becomes champ we will c if he stays champ for ten years i cant c it .

also joe was 35 fighting a prime kessler when he won i think we can say kesslers never been the same since tht loss ,true when joe fought b hop he was 43 but b hop went on to WHOOP pavlik.i know joe would beat ward on points easy joe is faster thn him but we will never know joe is pushing 38 now no spring chicken i think you forget that scott hes enjoying retirement and prob watching more ufc than boxing.

i think if the uk produced the next muhamed ali scott would still have nothing good to say about him in hes articles

    joe c 46-0

    david hay world champ

    carl froch world champ

you can have khan we dont want him lol

    population of america 300 million
population of uk 55 million do the maths

  • Al francis says:

Gilfoid you clown, there’s no way you’ve seen calzaghe-kessler if you say it was close, why do keep making an idiot of yourself?

  • Taff says:

You said yourself Kessler looked old and like garbage in his last fight. He’s not the same fighter that pushed Calzaghe all the way, he’s been on a downward spiral since. So how does a one sided win for Ward mean he is better than Calzaghe when before they fought you said Kessler looked old and was garbage? Ward would have caused Calzaghe problems but he would have dealt with him in the same way he beat the other 46 fighters he stepped in te ring with

  • Irish says:

Ha . This man is having a laugh. Because Ward beat Kessler easliy doesnt mean he would be Calzaghe . You did say Kessler looked old and slow since the Calzaghe fight so now it was the same fighter that fought Joe . IDIOT .. Ward wouldnt stand a chance with Joe or even Eubank for that matter . and B-hop would still destroy ward . love the articles . very funny . TOP COMEDY

  • rick says:

Calzaghe is a great boxer, he beat kessler wen he was a unbeaten fighter at his prime. plus calzaghe was coming to the end of his career when they fought.

Any true boxing fan knows the quality of calzaghe just watch all his fights.. oh yeah all those fights of which he WON

  • Muzza says:

also Means Ward is good with his head and I dont mean smart.

  • Muzza says:

    Blar Blar Blar Blar Gilfoid

  • Tim says:

Kessler won 3 rounds on the 2 of the jugdes cards.
Calzaghe won without using headbutts and holding, it was a proper boxing match.
A Veteran like Calzaghe would school Ward, it would be like Pavlik against Hopkins. Calzaghe doesn’t fight in straight lines.

  • Penguin says:

Gilfoid, deep down even you know Ward couldn’t lay a glove on Calzaghe.

    End of story.

  • Anonymous says:

this guy does not beleive the stuff he writes, he does it purely for a reaction, the shocking thing is he’s been doing it for so many monthes maybe years, have you nothing better to do with your time? you are truly a sad case who needs help, dont hate him, feel sorry for him.

  • joe says:

im sorry but i watched this fight live an ward is 1 of the most dirtyist fighters i have seen an he has no skill watch it an u will see sum of his shots are wide an sloppy.

  • Anonymous says:

i think we all knew this one was coming, this clown is too predictable, you could say what does paquiao’s win over dela hoya and hatton say about mayweather? i think mayweather beats pacman and jc schools ward.

  • Sam says:

Do you write this garbage just to get reactions from people or do you genuinely believe what you write. Calzaghe and Ward cannot be compared. I agree that Ward did a better job on Kessler than Calzaghe(fair bit of it with his head), but Calzaghe was a world champion for over a decade. Ward has beat one world champion who was nowhere near his best on the night.

  • Cam says:

Calzaghe Kessler wasn’t close mate & Joe didn’t resort to dirty tactics to beat Kessler, he just adapted his style like the best champs always do.

  • Simon M says:

    Typical Calzaghe hating yank

  • Dynamite Dean says:

Joe was 35 when he fought kessler, and still made it look very easy from round 5 onwards.

Ward is 25 and he blatantly headbutts kessler atleast 4 times on purpose. Very dirty fighter, I dont think he will get away with that if he has to face abraham or froch.

I think he will hammer taylor into submission and destroy that joke of a fighter Dirrell.

  • DEL-BOY says:

joe would show the world again how good he is scott he would win easily with a ud.

  • Mike says:

Really mate cause ward hits like a girl! Calzaghe is faster or just as fast as ward STYLES MAKE FIGHTS! Ward would have a heap of problems against joe and would lose a clear UD

  • nick says:

its says Kessler is a lot older and ward is nowhere near Calzaghe’s levle you clown gilfoid ha ha. Calzaghe could come back tomorrow without a warm up and still beat ward and drible ’sorry dirrell’ on the same night ha ha ha

  • Bloodbath says:

Hi Scott, I don’t like your articles usually as they are trite. But yeah, I think Calzaghe cleverly avoided the likes of these guys.

  • Mike says:

HAHAHA Knew this was coming! Keep dreaming!
