The Heartbeat of Boxing
by Gav Bridges: This year has seen some seismic events in the world of Boxing. The return of ‘Money’ Mayweather with a virtuoso performance, Showtime’s much-vaunted and irresistibly compelling super Six tourney, Manny Pacquiao cutting a swathe through the divisions in a bid for universal acclaim, and of course, David almost slayed Goliath!
All over the world clubs are getting our young men, and women, future world champions are borne in sheds, shacks, any available space where a ring and bags can be hung. The trainers who give their all for the reward of seeing young men grow, show discipline and better themselves personally and physically, a reward money just can’t buy.
One such club is Penrith Elite Boxing, a club above a local pub (Aren’t so many!!) where a group of Boxers ranging in age from 12 up to their mid-30′s turn up week in week out to put themselves under the tutelage and in the hands of club organiser/matchmaker/trainer, Steven Sharkey. Steve selflessly gives hours of his time to train, fund raise and support his fighters.
While the eyes of the world are fixed on the showdown between Cotto and the Pacman, Steve only has eyes for one thing- the clubs 5th anniversary Boxing show, where a list of fighters from the gym will be meeting with pugilists from across the north of England. Due to Steve’s tireless promotion he has not only sold out the 360 tickets for the show, but has installed a ‘Drive-Thru’ screen so those who aren’t lucky enough to get a seat can share in the hard work that has been put in. Add to this Steves ‘persuasive’ nature that has managed to get special guests in the shape of Olympian Bradley Saunders, and British boxing legends Frank Bruno and John H. Stracey, the lucky ticket holders are in for a great night of entertainment, and add vital funds to the coffers of the club.
Over the next few weeks I will be following the progress of Sharkeys boys in the build-up to the fight, introducing you to some meritorious young men, and getting the gospel according to Steven Sharkey. The real heartbeat of Boxing

I never give up even when I’m beat. I will always get back up stronger and harder, not like some people I know!
mr sharkey couldn’t train a dog to sit for a cookey
Amatuer boxing and boxing gyms are an amazing place, it doesnt only take in and teach future world champions, there are alot of misguided young boys and girls enter these gyms, they may not leave as boxers but so many of them have been tought some real life skills and find an oppertunies to break free from what was leading to be a tough life.
And it breeds boxing and i love boxing.
still need to televised boxing on the 3 major networks..ABC,NBC and CBS to get the same exposure it once had in the past decades..as a true boxing fan, i wish these promoters would stop being so greedy and let each champion from each weight respective divisions fight the mandatory challenger..not this catchweight crap!!
that’s the most bogus division there is and there ever will be..if you want to fight the man, let the man fight you at his most comfortable weight…
good luck with the show Mr Sharkey people like you deserve mentioning more often infact you probably deserve a medal keep up the good work
