Pacquiao’s weight demands defeat Cotto

Photo credit: Naoki Fukuda – By Liam Santiago: The extra two pounds that Manny Pacquiao demanded Miguel Cotto took off had a huge impact on the result of their bout. Cotto looked so drained. As I watched at the weigh in, I changed my mind as to who I thought would win. Cotto looked like a lollypop, he had zero energy and the Pacquiao camp had planned for this, in my opinion. Pacquiao did not beat Miguel Cotto last night. He beat a ghost of Miguel Cotto.
Although Cotto took a beating, he showed he has more guts and more of a heart than Manny Pacquiao will ever have. He did not roll on the floor for ten minutes like Pacquiao did when he was knocked out years ago. He fought on through the blood and showed he has the heart of a lion.
I really do wish Pacquiao would stop weight draining every single opponent he faces. He is actually quite a good fighter so he should drop that act. Would he beat the likes of Cotto without draining them? No. Of course he wouldn’t. But he could leave the ring with his head held high, something he could not do last night.
I said before the fight that if Cotto loses I would quit my job. Wrong again. If only Pacquiao did not beat such a weight dead, shot fighter, I would walk away. But, the way I see it is he did not beat Cotto, he beat a ghost of Cotto. Not only did Pacquiao drag Cotto down from his usual welterweight limit, he also forced him to put his title on the line. What is boxing coming to.

i respect your opinion regarding the fight but with due respect, i think you have forgotten that because of the catch weight, manny pacquiao has also gained weight and ordinarily it will lessen his speed and his chance of beating cotto. the way i see it, both fighters have sacrificed something for this fight, pacquaio gained more wieght and affect his speed and cotto lost weight that could have affected his power and energy. Just the same, both fighters accepted such conditions and it is up to them to adjust and show how good they are. What ever you say, the one who fought pacquaio was cotto, and not any ghost. Cotto is not shot, he was just drained;Cotto fought the worst fight of his carrer on Saturday, he looked slow, with no power and he let Pac get to him. Cotto was drained at 145, and the way it looked he came in weighing 145 on sat night, which is not the way Cotto is suppose to fight. He usually makes weight 147 then goes up to 154-158 on fight night. This is a poor performance by Cotto, I hope he can get a better trainer, and he needs to get out of that contract with Arum who is the reason Cotto lost, there was a clause in the contract that Cotto had to come in at 145 on fight night, which takes away from the boxers advantage and puts him at a disadvantage. Cotto needs to hurry up get his stuff, team, and Promoter in order, and get a re-match with Pac at 147, with no restriction, and the belt on the line, and lets see what happens then.

Cotto did a great job in the fight against Manny Pacquiao. The truth is, Manny adapted after the 1st round in order to defeat Cotto.
The “ghost of Cotto,” as you call him, had no problem in the ring and in fact did a great job in stopping Manny from gaining momentum in the first round. The Cotto seen on Saturday night was no different than any other night (I should know, I’ve watched all 34 of Cotto’s previous pro fights along with one amateur fight, some twice).
You can have Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Hatton, De La Hoya, and anyone else that Pacquiao has fought in the past, to come in at any weight within 147 lbs and the 145-lb Cotto would have defeated any one of the mentioned fighters. Pacquiao deserves credit for what he has done. He was the better fighter on Saturday night and Cotto admitted defeat with no excuses; so should you.
You made an article stating that you would quit writing and you should stick to that promise. No one should be reading your garbage anyway. We have the greatest boxer of our generation winning his 7th title and instead of congratulating Pacquiao, you put Pacquiao down instead.
You do your best in covering up for Cotto’s lost and you sadly question the heart of Pacquiao when the truth is though Pacquiao was hurt from Cotto’s punches, as he admitted in a post-fight interview, the pound-for-pound king was determined to defeat the welterweight champ.
No more weight-draining excuses. If weight was a problem, none of these bigger fighters should have signed a contract to begin with. The terms of the fight was made and agreed upon long before the fight took place. In fact, you were aware yet still made the wrong pick.
I could care less whether or not you still write. The problem is that if you’re not man enough to own up to your loss and respect the better fighter rather than make excuses, then you do not deserve to be a writer for the sport of boxing. Nobody likes a sore loser and you are as pathetic as it gets.
Some advice: learn the sport more before you decide to comment on it. When you learn to own up to your mistakes, you get stronger.

I am sticking by the statement I made a couple of weeks back. If Miguel Cotto loses to Manny Pacquiao on November 14th, I will never write another boxing article. If Pacquiao can, somehow, pull off the win, it will be a very emotional day. Tears will flow. However, anyone with a decent knowledge of boxing will understand, the odds are stacked against Pac-Man.
Lets remember, Cotto will not be coming into this fight dehydrated, ”dead at the weight”, like De La Hoya was. He will not have a useless trainer in his corner, who will destroy his mental focus and preparation, like Hatton did. And, by what I hear, he will not peak three weeks prior to the fight, like Hatton did. Cotto has a much better defence than Hatton, he has a great jab and under rated speed. The Puerto Rican phenomenon also hits like a beast. His power is out of this world.
Yes, Cotto was stopped by Margarito, and stopped badly. But lets not forget, Margarito was 6ft and had iron in his gloves (or something similar). When Margarito was caught for these ’substances’, prior to fighting Shane Mosley, he was nott he same. Mosley knocked him out. Mosley, has been beaten my Cotto. I just think that the power of Cotto might spark memories of Rustico Torrecampo and Medgeon Singsurat. Never heard of them names? They both knocked Pacquiao out in three rounds.
However, in boxing you never know. Pacquiao might pull off the biggest win of his career and my career as a boxing writer will end. Cotto has to drop two pounds from his usual weight limit so that might play a part. Maybe the Pacquiao camp are hoping to fight Cotto and beat him like they beat Oscar De La Hoya, through weight demands. However, after the bout, I will not go back on my word, if Pacquiao ”the warrior’ wins, I will never write another boxing article again.

Didn’t Roach originally ask for Cotto at 143? Cotto refused and asked for 147. They met in the middle. The whole “weight drained” excuse is ridiculous in my opinion.
Cotto and his team knew the weight they needed to make, they knew it was 1 lb lighter than when he fought Clotty, they agreed to the weight long before the fight, even before a contract was signed, so if they didn’t prepare properly, or if they agreed to a weight they weren’t comfortable with, then its their own fault. Not Manny’s, not Roach’s.
Cotto fought great for the first couple of rounds. He was hitting Pacquiao and looking great. Pacquiao then got Cotto’s timing and rhythm and he set into his then demolished him. It had nothing to do with weight – it had everything to do with Pacquiao being a great fighter.
Congrats to Cotto for being a great sport after the fight, unlike Hatton who just walked away from the ring. Cotto has great heart and I’ve always liked him as a fighter, unfortunately he was beating by a much better, legendary fighter.
