Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Same as Margarito-Cotto?

cotto45343By Saad Farooqi: Brutal fights. If there is anything that defines Cotto’s career for the past two years it’s that. From Antonio Margarito, to Joshua Clottey to Manny Pacquiao, it was 12 rounds of blood and swelling for the Puerto Rican fighter. And he took the brunt in all three of them.

Now, while I will in no ways try to undermine or discredit Manny Pacquiao’s greatness, I want to say one thing as clearly as possible: the beating Miguel took from Manny is in no way or form comparable to the one he took from Margarito. Once the referee stopped the fight on the 14th of this month Miguel was battered and horribly swollen but it wasn’t a bloody mess like he was in the Margarito fight.

He was bleeding, yes. He was swollen horribly, yes. In the Margarito fight, however, Miguel had a broken nose, busted lips, damaged cheek bones, broken ribs and was bleeding from his nose, mouth and even his ears. Miguel against Margarito could barely speak. Miguel against Manny said it like it is, “I’m just badly swollen”.

So that much should be obvious: Miguel’s condition was not similar to the Margarito fight. Period.

While hyperbole sells well, the problem with this particular one is that it’s taking the blame from Margarito and planting it unjustly in Miguel’s lap. All of a sudden, it’s Miguel’s fault that he cuts and swells so easily while Margarito is getting a respite. That’s ridiculous. The bloodying of Cotto was one of the things brought to the table against Margarito since no welterweight can do what he did. Now I firmly believe that all men deserve to make a livelihood, but that said, when a man puts another man’s life in danger needlessly I’m willing to make an exception. Margarito was caught trying to cheat against Mosley. That is an undeniable fact.

Whether he used it against Miguel Cotto is besides the point. He was caught red-handed doing something that could have potentially ended not his opponent’s career but may have ruined or ended his life. That deserves no excuses. To echo Miguel’s words, Antonio Margarito should be banned for life. No excuses.

Him allowed to box again is an affront to the sport and the men and women who put so much on the line to do what they do.

i’m still curous about how much miguel weighed during the pacman fight.

  • Bob says:

I agree, Margarito should be banned for life and also face criminal charges. Cotto has been through too many really brutal fights. The cement gloves must have taken their toll on him. And, in the back of my mind I wonder how Pac can consume 7000 calories a day to maintain his weight and be so fast, then only put on 4 pounds after the weigh-in.
No accusations, I just ponder how that can be done for this fight, when light-weight Marquez pretty much equalled him in 2 fights and he could not knock out a skinny Oscar, but later punched holes in real welterweights.

    Manuel Perez:

Why didn’t Cotto take advantage of:
    1. the distractions in Manny’s camp? The Philippine typhoons, the lack of training days, the numerous flights, the in-team bickering.

    2. Manny’s numerous commitments to show business, further rendering his training short in days.

    3. Knee injury suffered by Manny after the fight with Hatton. Obviously Manny was wearing pads during training.

If Cotto had an excuse with the weight, didn’t he have the same (almost) weight against Clottey at 146?

Geez, it must be very hard to admit his greatness because Manny just proves you wrong everytime and keeps beating up your boys.

When Manny tears Mayweather a new a*s*s**h*o***l*e, I’m certain you’ll find another excuse, and a frontrunner would be, Floyd isn’t Black American enough.

  • Saad says:

(NOTE: i’m talking in terms of boxing)

  • Saad says:

Bob Arum is a moron. he’s calling manny the greatest of all time for beating Miguel Cotto, just because Miguel is “bigger” than Pacman. dumbest thing i’ve ever heard.
for one not only is Cotto NOT bigger than Manny (look at their pics at the weight-in, they looked the same. the only thing miguel has bigger than manny is his fists and waist size) but they weighed the same at the fight.
how does someone who weights as much as you and one inch taller than you become a bigger man?

  • Saad says:

David: mosley taking steriods is jeopardizing his own health. bludgeoning another man with bricks is not.
    it’s that simple.

  • dapogi says:

Can you imagine being hammered by a hand with a plaster of paris. Its like being hit by a solid brick.

  • David says:

Haha…How come I dont hear anyone echo these same sentiments towards Mosley who actually admitted to using steroids???? and not some ruling saying something contained elements of something that contained elements….no one will come close to match the greatness of Mexicans regardless if this propaganda runs 24/7

  • Ahmed Armstrong says:

Margarito need ILLEGAL HAND WRAPS while Pacquiao dont need it to make Cotto’s face like a hamburger.

  • diesel says:

I agree, Pac is good and all, but c’mon he never even defended his last 3 tittles. and if he does with his welter he will most likely do it at a “Pac weight” of 145. c’mon a welter is 147 max. it’s b/s he’s the 147 champ, but wont defend it at that. he’s starting to act like floyd. i give him credit, but i think it would have been a greater accomplishment if he fought and won with no catchweight. to a boxer every pound counts. regardless. and how was he ranked that high at welter when he never even fought any welter opposition exept an over the hill DLH. Pac is a good boxer maybe even great but not an ATG and for sure not GOAT.

  • Marcos says:

If two pounds aint nothing ? Then why didnt TEAM PACMAN take the fight at 147 ? Because unlike you guys…They know 2 lbs make a difference!

  • junior says:

i like manny and i like Cotto, but to be honest , cotto lost due to three months of training and the most importtant thing is his new green Trainer. Cotto must make up with his uncle Evangelista Cotto and if he dont, than Cotto is in trouble because Joe Santiago, cottos, new trainer is just that NEW!!!! at 147lbs, and with his old trainer, Cotto will give manny the biggest whipping of his life. and for all u out there who say oh two or three pounds is nothing.. thank u know nothing about boxing cause two, three , four or five pounds is a great deal in boxing. but than again, everyone here is a boxer. lol.

  • tim tom says:

team j&j is idiot indeed! giving excuses! his nutrionist said that 145 is good for them otherwise they will not accept the fight! cotto did not give any excuses! why don’t this team j grow some balls and not give any excuses!

  • rodavlas says:

I agree that Margarito should be banned for life. What he did was criminal.

I also stopped thinking why there’s a lot of people bound to discredit Pacman’s achievements. He is indeed one of the greatest & no more excuses.

Lastly, I don’t read any articles from that Manuel Perez & Liam Santiago anymore.

  • Iska says:

    Team J & J:
YOu idi#t, Cotto didnt lose bec of 2 lbs. Saying 2 lbs made the difference, then going by your argument, 5 lbs can also make or break Manny. The thing is, they prepared hard. That’s why you have nutritionists, conditioning experts, etc.
Cotto lost bec he’s got inexperienced trainer. Cotto has his own speed but his trainer didnt develop it along with his power. Their gameplan, if they had, was wrong.

  • Punch out says:

I agree 110% with this article to the fullest. So glad to hear someone say this! Maragrito should be banned for life. Was a fan of his until he was caught cheating.

  • kam says:

MARGARITO SHOULD BE BANGED UP DOING TIME 4 WAT HE DONE OR ATTEMPTED TO DO.

  • Anonymous says:

Manuela, your the imbecile. After all the stupid predictions and comment you’ve done before against Pacquaio, You should just keep you’re mouth shut.

  • Team J&J says:

    Tp Iska:

You idiot, You dont know what you talking about, Yes cotto lost because of 2 pounds, that was obvious but pac fans dont want to see it like that but it was obvious. Pac fans for some reason dont want to accept that before pac sent cotto to the canvas for the second time Cotto was in control of the fight. After pac knockdown cotto the first time, cotto get up and took control of the fight again. But here is the problem, by round 3 pac found out that cotto punches dont even move him so he took over and end the fight in round 4 when he knockdown him for the second time, the fight was over right there. But if this fight was at 147 except of 145 cotto was gonna hurt pac real bad, those jab he land in the first round at 147 would move pac will shake him but at 145 didnt do anything. Is not just 2 pounds is the extra work that he put in the gym that get him tired fast with no power. he weight 146 for clottey but only train for 9 weeks, to lose one more pound it cost him 13 weeks, you get it? is not just 2 pounds is 13 weeks of training whle pac did only 8 cause he was ready on weight. This the reality of boxing, Cotto didnt give any excuses because he is a man and took responsability, But he know that 13 weeks of training took everything for him and could not do damage against pac, he knows that at 147 with only 8 weeks of training at fight nite he wil be the strong miguel cotto that we know and will destroy pac, But he also know he took the fight so he have to pay for it.

  • Rick says:

It’s a real shame that Bob Arum is going to do everything in his power to get Margarito in a big fight. To make things worse, he wants Cotto to get in the ring with him again for a rematch! I really hope Cotto stands his ground and does not take that fight. If he is being allowed to fight again, he should get in the back of the line and start from the bottom!

  • Saad says:

I’ve moved on from the weight draining theory a long time ago. I did feel that Cotto looked weak in this fight but it could be from over-training as much as it could be from stress or even–given that he was training himself–lack of dicipline. anyone of these can be equally true.
Cotto did run out of gas a lot earlier in this fight as opposed to others but that I attribute to Manny’s blitz like attacks. Tagging Manny is insanely difficult as Miguel said himself.

  • manuela perez III says:

so sorry for the moronic comment of my son, manuel perez III. but see, when he was still a baby i accidentally dropped him head first and it did affect his mental ability, the truth is, it took him 13years to finish grade school, so please try to bear with him.
my child manuel, please stop hating the pacman, coz if you continue that you will always be the loser until your last day on earth.
just remember the pacman loves you and will wait for you with open arms the day you will come to your senses and join his winning side.
for once in your life dear manuel do the right thing and become a winner for once.

  • ISKA says:

Yes, Cotto agreed to 2 lbs less than 147. He knows his body well than anyone. He even weighed 146 against Clottey, 1 lb over 145. Then they trained much ahead of time. Pacquiao never fought at more than 140lb after Dela Hoya. 140 is his best weight.
Both fighters made concessions–Pacquiao adding weight, Cotto losing weight.
If you think after the fight that Cotto lost because of that 2 lbs then you are more than an imbecile.

  • Manuel Perez III says:

Yes, Margo-Cotto and Pac-Cotto were the same — they were both unfair to Miguel. Margarito dipped his wraps in plaster, Pacquiao demanded Miguel to shed two pounds. And if you don’t think the two pounds plus the ill effect of Margarito’s concrete fists did not make any difference, then you are an imbecile.

  • After the 12 rounds stoppaged of Cotto, I saw a bloodied but a brave and gallant warrior. And when he conceded after the fight, Cotto is a true sportman!!!
    Hat-off to Miguel Cotto!!!

  • perko says:

margo might have cheated , who knows for sure but thats why a second is sent to the other mans room to watch the strap up and sign off [ inital the wraps].if cottos second done this whats the fuss about this fight – did he inital the wraps or not.

  • Michael says:

Margarito should indeed be banned for life. Boxing is already a cruel way to make a living, without illegal enhancers. The guy had no integrity and no respect for human life when you try to pull something off like that. It’s a great shame that he will be allowed back in the ring in the near future, I think all boxers should shun him, he’s done, his career has been tarnished and it should remain that way, don’t give him life.

  • Anonymous says:

couldnt agree more. the fighter knows when something is different about his hand wraps. esp with that much experience margarito was def. well aware of what was in his wraps before the mosley fight. banned for life wouldn’t be punishment enough. he should be hit with criminal charges.
