Pacquiao: Show him some respect – I haven’t

pac6789By Liam Brindle: I honestly believe that too many people (including myself) have seriously underestimated Manny ‘Pac-Man’ Pacquiao. Every fight he has had in the past 12 months there seems to have been hundreds of people doubting the little Filipino. Whether it is on sites like this one, Forums, Boxing pundits, Fellow fighters and even boxing trainers. If I go back to 10th December 2008 I was boarding a flight from Manchester destined for the bright lights of Las Vegas to watch a fight that had been dubbed ‘The Dream Match’.

I was sat in the departure lounge watching the ‘De La Hoya Pacquiao 24/7’ that I had recorded to my iphone (I know I am a nerd), I was thinking to myself ‘De La Hoya is just going to be far too big and far too strong for this tiny man’, my fiancé gave me a nudge and said ‘There’s Ricky Hatton’ as I looked over there he was, standing with a Gucci bag under his arm. So over I trotted like a like an excited puppy.

‘Alright Ricky?…Do you mind if I have my picture taken with you?’

As I was sat on the aeroplane I kept thinking ‘Do you mind if I have my picture taken with you?… is that all I could think of?’

Anyway I am starting to go off the subject here…as I went to baggage collection in Vegas, I saw Ricky standing waiting for his luggage, so I went over n hit him with a few questions:
‘Who do you think will win the fight?’ he replied ‘Oscar…he is too big, too strong and to experienced… I think he will box him and then knock him out.’

I was thinking I was right with my assessment of the fight.

When we went to the weigh in me and my fiancé was sat in Starbucks in the MGM Grand an hour before it started and my fiancé said ‘There’s that guy that you like’ I turned around to see Mr. Freddie Roach walking past, so again the excited puppy ran over. ‘Hey Freddie do you mind if I have my picture taken with you’…not again…so I began to fire away with the questions.

LB ‘Who is going to win?’

FR ‘Manny is going to stop him in the mid to late rounds…he is ferocious’

LB ‘How sure are you?’

FR ‘When did you arrive in Vegas?’

LB ‘Last night.

FR ‘Well trust me…go and put all your spending money on Manny to stop Oscar.’

Freddie Roach was an absolute gent and was happy to stand and chat… I had him for a good 5 minutes, he was telling me how Amir Khan was going to be a world champ within 12 months… asking where I was staying etc.

As it turned out It Freddie was absolutely spot on.

When The Hatton v Pacquiao fight was announced again so many people (including myself again) had the opinion: Hatton is too big, too strong, he will apply the pressure and all he needs to do is land one big left to the body and it will close the show.

The day of the weigh in, I was watching Sky Sports news and I saw an interview with Freddie Roach:
‘I think we will knock him out…round 3…it will be short and sweet’.

I was like…’What is Freddie Smoking?’

The next night Ricky Hatton was laying unconscious in the centre of the ring in round 2!!!
Again when the Cotto v Pacquiao fight was made… forums where awash with boxing fans saying yet again : Cotto is too big, too strong, will apply pressure, work the body and Manny is out of his depth and yet again I was doubting the Pac-Man and was in the Cotto corner.

Me and a friend of mine was sat on my couch witching the build up and yet again on came Mr. Roach ‘We will either knock him out in round 1 or we will stop him late’ my friend looked at me and said ‘You can’t f**k with Freddie’s prediction again mate.’

Later that night Cotto’s face looked like it had been hit with a wrecking ball and Kenny Bayless was waving off the contest in favor of Manny Pacquiao.

The tiny Filipino now holds belts in seven different weight classes and has pounded everyone who has been put in his path and seems to still be being doubted as to how good he actually is.

In my opinion it is about time we all stopped doubting Manny and stop jumping on band wagons and start to appreciate just how special this little guy actually is. The way he is willing to take on anyone and approach the fight in a vicious and ferocious manor…if there is any fighter in the world that gives the paying boxing public value for money it is certainly the Pac-Man.

As for the mega fight to end all mega fights Mayweather v Pacquiao (my mouth is watering just typing that for the first time) I was backing Mayweather… just simply because I really like him and I thought he might be too slick for Pac-Man… But I went to watch Bolton v Blackburn on Sunday and there was a certain Mr. Freddie Roach there with his fighter Amir Khan… as Amir was busy signing autographs I got to have a little word and a picture with Freddie again.

LB ‘If the fight happens can Manny win’

FR ‘ If it does happen Manny WILL win…we have the perfect game plan’.

Back to the drawing board Mr. Brindle.

  • Ojay says:

Let the doubters express their opinion about Manny, because all those negative things they say only makes Manny train harder everytime he fights. These negative things only motivates him to be a better fighter.

  • SJ says:

I am not betting against pacman. I just may not bet at all on Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. BTW – I can’t count seven titles… I looked at his record on boxrec.

  • motownhitman says:

I find it interesting that most fans of both fighters speak as though the other fighter is crap. It is safe to say that Floyd is better than Cotto, DLH and Hatton and Pac is better than JMM, Hatton and DLH therefore they both will be in for a fight, but to say Pac will knock Floyds head off like he did hatton is ridiculous and to say Floyd will knock Pac out is unlikely. The question is who does what they do better and who will be able to adjust.

  • testicularfortitude says:

Robert D. , you are a professor of pugilism…excellent analysis, conscise and descriptive writing, the trainers/fighters should take heed

  • NiteRanger says:

Yes i totally agree,Liam. Time to give credit to the humble little man who prays in the corner before every fight, has no bad words to say against anybody and fights like a true warrior. Manny is the savior of boxing.

  • ea88k says:

Even if Pacman beat Vitali Klitschko who is a heavy weight, you will still deny Manny’s incredible greatness. WAKE UP!!!!!

  • Angelo says:

Freddie Roach had Shawn Porter, an up & coming junior middleweight who people say is a small version of Tyson, spar with Manny…so Manny can get used to cotto’s power. Freddy will use Amir Khan, because of Kahn’s speed to spar with Manny, so Manny can get used to mayweathers speed. because face it..mayweathers power will have no affect.

  • Angelo says:

Those who saw Manny cut off the ring when cotto was running, can’t possibly say that mayweather will win. Yeah floyd will run but once, he decides to engage Manny…well then, it will be over.

  • Makuto of Japan says:

i really enjoyed reading your article i will wait for the continuation when pac-man vs. mayweather happens…. (i know they will say again ang again that pacman can’t beat mayweather because is too big and fast for manny… let us see… when it happens you’ll be proud to write again that they are wrong believe you me as far as i’m concern freddie knows best for manny and he got the game plan already for Floyd how to knock him out!) good observation from critics, good writer and keep on writing and i’ll be one of your avid readers.

  • James says:

More doubters, it’s funny I read the same thing, against cotto, too big, too smart and so on… Money pacquiao will prove you all wrong again!

  • FraudGawweather says:

    @unknown

it just shows that you know NOTHING about boxing.
everyone have a gameplan u fkin idiot!

  • Liam Brindle says:

No i am not Mr Santiago nor am i Mr Perez… I have written on this site before http://www.boxingnews24.com/2009/07/floyd-mayweather-jr-the-legend/

I just get very little time to do it… although i do ebjoy it so i will try to do it more often :)

I do continue to doubt the Pac-Man, although i am going to watch the Mayweather v Pac fight with a clear mind and not root for anyone…that way i can jus sit back and enjoy the fight :)

  • sporty says:

it’s good that there’s another sensible Liam in this site :)

my 2 cents..well, Freddie’s game plan against floyd jr. almost work perfectly thru Oscar DLH but Oscar got tired. manny never gets tired in long fights as shown in his latest one. manny is the champ and floyd jr. likes to bully smaller guys than fight his own size. he ducks margarito, cotto, and mosley. so all bargaining edge is w/ manny so hopefully, floyd jr. will have no excuses to sign the contract.

  • Jianne says:

Pac-Man will ko Mayweather!!! Once again Pac will be VICTORIOUS…PACQUIAO is like the Jordan in boxing!!! He’s the greatest boxer of all time! Best believe that you IDIOTS!

Mayweather better be ready coz Pac is gonna destroy his pretty face like he did to diaz, delahoya and cotto or even gonna put him to sleep like he did to hatton.

    PACMAN RULES!!!

  • JJ says:

When will people learn. Freddie and Pac are the ultimate duo. If Freddie says Pac will win, best believe him.

  • The Professer says:

Edwin Valero vs. Manny Pacman at 135 for a Titlebelt. Mexican vs. Phillpine

  • 2ne1 says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Freddie got the game plan set out!!!!!!!!!!!

  • fritz says:

ohhhh man,i hate mayweather sr.and jr always talking thrash.i have some doubt this fight never happen, because mayweather jr and sr,scared pacman.mayweathers camp will demand more money to avoid the fight happen.get me wrong with prediction

  • motownhitman says:

I tihnk it’s going to be hard for Manny to get close enough to land shots to the body however he is a pretty quick guy. I still think Floyd has far too many advantages for Manny to overcome and though Roach has done a masterful job with Manny as far as game plans I think it is going to be hard to come up with a game plan that Manny can stick to if Floyd makes some adjustments.

  • Robert D says:

The Cotto fight showed how strong PacMan is at welterweight and how fast he can land those combinations. However it also showed he could be outjabbed and took a little too long in cutting off the ring, which Mayweather took note of. This is why he said this would be an easy fight for him, because all he has to do is keep his distance and use his superior boxing skills while popping him and run and get his 20 mil like on an easy decision. He did this very thing with Juan Manuel Marquez because of his reach advantage and weight advantage. Unless PacMan fights like a Duran or JC Chavez, and punishes the body this fight would be easy for Money.

  • Robert D says:

For Floyd to win against Manny P, he has to be well Floyd, pick his spots and box from long range. Do not to stay squarely in front of PacMan and trade toe to toe, and stay away from PacMan’s power and make him pursue Floyd. Trading shot for shot would be suicide. Like Leonard-Duran I, Sugar Ray thought he could slug it out and lost to the Hands of Stone, come the rematch, he wised up and started boxing for a change. Floyd should keep MP busy with his jab and not do the toe to toe thing until PacMan is visibly tired and slowed down from the constant jabbing and combo from long range. Floyd saw this as his strategy and with his reach advantage, he would have no problem implementing it.

  • Dign4fire says:

I do smell something fishy here though.

  • Dign4fire says:

Another rare “worth-reading article” from Boxingnews24. Good job Liam!

  • joe rayos says:

“Liam” ??? I hope not former Liam Santiago friend of Manuel Perez who both promised to quit writing boxing articles when Pacquiao wins against Cotto. Huh…….

  • Phoocquiao says:

If I was Pacquiao, I would punch Floyd in the shoulder repeatadly until I dislocated it. Floyd’s got a bad shoulder and I would use that to my advantage. Make him think twice about useing that shoulder roll down the stretch. Also the bruising will cause the muscles in the shoulder to tighten which will take away speed and negate FLoyd’s lead left hook and jab. That’s how I would crack the Da Vinci COde that is FLoyd’s defense.

  • unknown says:

The funny thing is Pacquiao needs a game plan to fight any boxer. While Mayweather just fight using his skills and wins.

  • eddie says:

Freddie R. coached DLH how to fight FM but de lahoya
no longer have the speed to do it, Freddie is sure this time with the Pac Man

  • Dan says:

I’m not sure what this dude is talking about. Manny was favorite in this fight 3-1 to beat Cotto. He can’t really expect 100% of the people to think that pacquiao will win. He is just another fan writting. LOL

  • motownhitman says:

Robert, what are the keys to Floyd winning in your opinion?

  • Robert D says:

The way to fight a highly skilled boxer is to punish the body. The head movement and running will slow down and exhaustion sets in. See Julio Cesar Chavez – Bernard Taylor I. Ali – Frazier I. Duran – Leonard I. These kind of fights will be won in the trenches. Floyd does not want these kind of fights. Nuff said.

  • Robert D says:

Manny has a chance but he has such a huge reach disadvantage. He will not be able to outjab this guy. The key is to get inside this guy’s defense like Tyson does when he was younger fighting taller oppponents. How to do it? Rip into the guy’s body with punishing body blows then going upstairs. But it would be harder if the guy is in constant motion. Cotto was good at this, that is why Floyd don’t want any piece of him. Jose Luis Castillo pretty much used this great technique in their first fight and it showed Floyd visibly slowed down and taking some huge shots in that fight.

  • BoxingFan says:

    motownhitman,

Roach had a gameplan for DLH that woulda worked if he had enough stamina and if he actually followed the plan. Roach repeatedly told him to throw more jabs, but DLH didn’t listen. If you watch the fight, DLH is asked at end of the night why he didn’t throw more jabs. DLH only responds with, “I don’t know.” I’m not saying Pacquiao will win, because I think Mayweather’s defense is superb; but I think if anyone has a chance to win against PBF, its gonna be Manny.

  • Robert D says:

It will be a difficult fight for PacMan, because first of all the reach advantage is so big and Mayweather won’t engage him like Cotto. Unless he pressures Floyd to the body, then it will be like Marquez – Mayweather where Floyd will shoot from afar and score his points. If he does the Duran style of rushing the body (Brawl in Montreal) and hurting him with body shots, wear him down, then it will be a fight. Floyd will not come to him. Plus he needs to learn to roll away from the punches and not catch them flush to be effective in this fight.

  • unknown says:

Manny Pacquiao vs Fraud G4yfeather… Manny will win if he can hit G4yfeather… and that’s a big IF…

  • Bong Pan says:

They all said that about Manny, DLH is too big, Hatton is too strong, Cotto is a superb counter pucnher and hits hard…….well?

Trust in Manny and you will not be disappointed. Master Trainer Roach’s word is FACT.

  • motownhitman says:

Pacman…he had one when he worked with DLH and that didn’t work out. Floyd is the master of adjustments and has the superior boxing IQ. I’m not suggesting the fight will be a cakewalk which is what all of Manny’s fans seem to think, but I do think Floyd is too skilled for Manny.

  • Bong Pan says:

I predict a 6th round KNOCKOUT of Fraud by the Pacman.

There is no way that Fraud can win against Manny Man.

  • Pacman says:

Even tho PBF has good defense, Roach always has a game plan.

  • Don Morris says:

If it happens, I predict it would be a boring fight to see, not even close to Miguel Cotto’s fight with Manny. I’m not go’nna waste my money.
Sorry, but just look at Marquez-Mayweather fight, the money man keeps on running and hiding, b o r i n g…!!!

  • Pretty Boy Dominates says:

Manny’s going to be off balance all night long and Floyd will be spinning him rather than Manny getting the angles all the time. Manny’s ace will start coming apart around the 7-9 round and I wouldn’t be suprised if Floyd stops him on cuts after dominating him throughout!

  • B says:

If anyone else has noticed… All of manny’s opponents have been “TOO BIG TOO STRONG”. Not really came up against a boxer ?? You know who im thinking about?

  • foreseer says:

what can you get from predicting fights? money? what else?

so you can tell the other person, “I told you so!”?

both of them have their own capabilities. that is undeniable. one may be better than the other on some aspects but it also goes the other way around.

think about it if you are so sure about your favorite boxer’s victory then might as well bet every thing you have.

  • Bay Area says:

what’s up with your column were you drinking when you wrote this? Or don’t you read your stuff before you send it out?

  • unknown says:

Or if the fight will be scheduled before the next Good Friday then Floyd will have a much better chance of winning. Pacquiao’s amulet is almost drained of its powers. And it needs to be recharge the next Holy Week.

  • motownhitman says:

Some of these posts are just ridiculous. Manny has one way of fighting and has never adjusted in a fight. Floyd has the superior boxing IQ, defense, counter punching ability, patience and discipline. When is the last time we have seen Floyd be careless and abandon his game plan out of frustration? Roach had a game plan with DLH and it didn’t work.

  • unknown says:

If the fight is fair… skill to skill, power to power and speed to speed… I’m sure Floyd will win. All Pacquiao has to do is not use his amulet for once…

  • santiperes says:

Sorry guys, fights not gonna happen Floyd not ready to lose his 0.

  • Perry pc says:

I believe Pacquiao is faster, quicker, powerful and stronger than mayweather. Pacquiao will slip punches and cut mayweather to pieces.
This fight will be the end of the arrogant father and son.

  • joeseabee says:

i should have hated you for picking floyd over pacman, but your article makes me feel and act like a puppy as i read on! wuff!
pacman has no superpower, he’s an ordinary human being! but the more criticisms or the more people doubt his capability, the better fighter he has become!
    please write more! lol

  • invertebrae says:

i also want freddy to force manny to legally change his name to:

    “Money Pacquiao”

just to get under floyd’s skin.

    …ryan

  • invertebrae says:

freddy is good at being honest about his fighter and the opponents. for him to say he has the perfect gameplan tells me he has already studied mayweather and sees opportunities.

mayweather is fast, but not as fast as manny. he has good defense, but you can’t hide from manny for 12 rounds. mayweather is a good counter puncher, but he isn’t strong enough to hurt manny. mayweather scored a KO over hatton only because ricky got frustrated and just tried to unleash on floyd.

for me, floyd (like cotto) coaches himself. he isn’t going to change for this fight, so any strategies roach and pacquiao establish should be valid going into the ring. if floyd hides and plays defense, manny will grind to the body and get out of the way of the counter shots (watch the highlights of the cotto fight for proof on how manny gets out of the way after a big combination, or watch the first knockdown in the hatton fight ot see how he ducks out of the way).

if cotto couldn’t hurt manny, how do you guys figure floyd will? floyd’s not a power puncher. manny is fast and STRONG. look at the 2nd knockdown against cotto. he planted his feet and delivered a half-uppercut/half-hook and dazed cotto in an instant before anyone saw what even happened.

i’m more curious what will happen in the mayweather camp that will give him an “out” if and when he loses to manny (which i predict will happen and cannot WAIT to see). will he injure a fist, break a rib, spend the night in jail on false accusations. will him and his father have a falling out which causes a distraction to him?

or will he honestly own up to a loss vs. pac man.

in other news, i have to say, if the fight happens, this will be the most entertaining HBO 24/7 yet! here’s proof, as we can read the hopeless romantic floyd sr. bashing manny:

let’s get it on! to see floyd laying on the canvas like hatton and roy jones jr. will be a thing of beauty.

    …ryan

  • Anmikkim says:

Manny will win by UD or Tko in late rounds. Mayweather is good and his style is to hit and run. A fast boxer with explosive left and right hands, like Manny will definitely destroy the Moneyman. The Mayweather father and son fear the Pacman. The is the reason they always talk that Pacquiao is no good fighter. They will be in a surprise and regret having come out of retirement.

  • dBomb says:

Sad but true…Pacquaio has no choice but to chase after the coward Mayweather….there’s no other fighter in boxing capable of beating Mayweather than Pacquaio…not Mosley..not Cotto…

A fighter with quick foot and hand speed will do the trick as he will have no choice but to chase the running Mayweather…

Pacquaio has all the tools to beat Mayweather….

  • Joriz says:

I won’t mind to get surprised again and be proven wrong by Pacman.

  • motownhitman says:

Let’s be honest, Manny fought DLH at a weight he hadn’t fought at since 2001, Floyd at least fought him at 154 which was the first fight Floyd fought at 154. Before floyd retired he was p4p king so please do not act as though Floyd has become some run of the mill fighter over night.

  • cotto=pain says:

i think manny might have met his match with mayweather, dont get me wrong, i hate mayweather, but you cant deny the guys defense, he wont engage with pacquiao, so he’ll run and stay on the outside not allowing pacquiao to get into rhythm, i hate to say it, but mayweather will take home the decision without actually fighting.

  • Limny says:

Manny can take punches, can hit hard, is fast with both hands and has strong legs to spring the power to overwhelm Mayweather. Manny throws 6-8 combination to Mayweather’s 2-3.

Paquiao is battled tested with bigger guys than him. Mayweather has been battled tested with guys smaller than him. Mayweather has not met a guy like Pacquiao and will be surprised when and if they meet in the ring, like Diaz, de la Hoya, Hatton, and recently Cotto.
