Pacquiao-Mayweather….the world awaits

mayweather453443By Andrew Muldoon: So it now looks like we will at last get so see the two best fighters on the planet go toe to toe in what will probably be the biggest fight in history, a modern day rumble in the jungle if you will only a lot bigger. In one corner we have Floyd Mayweather Jnr, love him hate him his ability is undeniable, a five weight world champion with not a single blemish on his record. A master technician who has perfected the art of defensive boxing. An absolute joy to watch when he’s in full flow, he is the boxing purists dream. In the other corner we have Manny Pacquiao, loved for his all non-stop action style, titles in a whopping seven different weight classes. the only man ever to achieve such a feat and the scary thing is he improves with every fight.

In his last fight the Pacman was outstanding, make no mistake abpout it Miguel Cotto was and still is an elite welterweight and he came to fight as he always has but he was blown away by the Filipino whirlwind. This was not a bad day at the office for Cotto either, it was just sheer brilliance from Pacquiao that brought the stoppage. It was clear from as early as the second round which way the fight would go. Manny took Cotto’s power and came back for more and when the two started to exchange blows it was always Cotto who you thought would come off worse, and he did. By round ten it was survival mode with some saying was even merciful to Cotto out of respect for the Puerto Rican. Come the eleventh round the referee was itching to step in and he did so, not long into the final stanza. A man who started his professional career at 107lbs was now battering one of the worlds best at 147lbs, i was in awe…..

In Mayweather’s last outing he was also in fine form, out-boxing Juan Manuel Marquez who himself is no slouch (no.2 p4p going into the fight), for the twelve rounds it was like Floyd had never been away, slick defence and lightening counters earned himself a landslide points win over the former lightweight king. Now you may say Marquez had to put “x” amount of pounds on for the bout and this would have hindered him and made him slow and sluggish which is a valid point but at the end of the day speed was never Marquez’ strong point and he just wasn’t in Mayweather’s league on the night which meant there was only going to be one winner.

So now for the fight the world wants to see, Manny Pacquiao’s irresistible force meets the immovable object that is Floyd Mayweather Jnr. Will it happen? yes I think it will definitely happen. Floyd has come out and said he wants it, he wants Manny to come out and say “I want Floyd Mayweather” Obviously its going to take a lot more than that with the whole purse split and the issue with Bob Arum and Mayweather but i have a feeling ego’s will be put to one side to make this event happen.

As they say styles make fights and this one is no different, there are a few aspects which I have picked out that i think will ultimately decide the outcome.

*Will Mayweather be able to cope with Pacquiao’s relentless attacks for twelve rounds if needs be? a tough task but yes, his defense is good enough but if he gets caught and decides to trade in the middle of the ring he could end up on his shorts or even knocked out, this is the most important part of the fight i feel. Mayweather must keep his discipline.

*Can Pacquiao take Floyd’s shots? Yes, just look at the Cotto fight, he took some good shots and kept coming and Cotto is as powerful as any welter out there.

*Can Mayweather get to Pac? Yes, its no secret that Manny gets hit and Floyd is as accurate as they come but wether he can hurt him is another story.

*Pacquiao’s gameplan – Nobody hes managed to come up with the blueprint to beat Floyd Mayweather yet. Roach has came very close with Oscar though, can Manny pull it off?

The ill-fated prediction.

Here goes,

Roach and Floyd snr will engage in verbals for the whole series of 24/7 whilst Floyd jnr will continue to tell the world how great he is. We will hear stories of how Manny is destroying his sparring partners.

In the ring i cant look past Floyd on points, as good as Manny is and however great his accomplishments are i just dont think he would pull it off. Floyds defense will frustrate him and it could end up being a whitewash.

I cant see it being an edge of your seat barnstormer but it wont be no chess match either, somewhere in the middle I think. certainly one for the purists out there. After the fight Manny will retire, run for office in the Philippines and win by a landslide. Freddie Roach will continue to train more champions and Mayweather will continue to tell the world how great he is, only this time we will believe him.

i agree with this article 100% mayweather would beat pacquiao on points but i like pacman and i think he should fight paul williams or shane moseley as i think williams would ko pacquiao inside 5 rounds as his work rate is second to none. for me the best fight out there is mayweather vs williams

  • R.L says:

Good article. Seriously the comments on pacquiao beating mayweather are kind of silly, theres a chance but mayweather wont give him a chance to beat him when they fight, Mayweather to win on points not easily but his defence and counter style will never be beaten. Pacquiao is quick Mayweather is quicker. The thing is about mayweather he doesn’t just beat boxers he tortures them to come forward and thats what manny does… and when he does a few lightning counters will smash him in the face and make the “pac-man” look silly.

    Great article
I desagree with a lot of people in here.
I think floyd is a great fighter, he is not borring, he just likes to counterpunch.
Come on, you guys say that he run´s? he just doesn´t like to take chances, beats them up for half of the fight and then fights at distance.
I see floyd beating pacquio by decision on a one sideded fight.
sorry to disagree with many, but that is my opinion.

    Nice article..

Cotto is a welter weight champion, and yet, with the plan set-up for him by roach, there were a number of mistakes Cotto made in the ring.

With the speed and power of Pacman, I will still bet on him winning over mayweather by points..

  • Ichigata says:

mayweather has defense thats all he will do when he faces manny he will not win on points cause he will just run and run, if manny doenst knock this guy in the early rounds i bet this will be a draw..

and if pacman hit this guy a solid punch just1 solid punch mayweather may want to retire again…

  • JK says:

“Judah’s best punch was his right cross over the jab and Manny doesn’t have a jab or Zab’s reach.”

My bad, I meant left cross.

  • JK says:

“…even with PBF being fast enough to do it, how he can escape from Pacman’s straight left when Judah was able to do it for 6 rounds when he wasn’t the same???”

Judah’s almost never hit Floyd with the straight left. Floyd completely dominated the fight after round 4. Judah’s best punch was his right cross over the jab and Manny doesn’t have a jab or Zab’s reach.

  • JK says:

“if you look at floyd shoulder roll, the ribs are open to the side, and when the shoulder rolls, the face opens up from above. with the amount of work rate and punching power pacquiao have on those fists, he’s going to break down floyd. 4 shots to the body and a left overhand to the head.
look at the floyd fights and study it….”

This only works if Floyd is standing still. If he moves his feet, he counters with the straight right as Manny reaches in. Probable KO for Floyd, Manny stunned and hurt at the very least.

“Pacquiao moves a lot and throws a right that barely hits and follows with a strong left and 3 more punches. It’s like a pump fake. Mayweather won’t sense when will Pacquiao throw a punch. He won’t even know which part of his body to block.”

No, he’ll just move his feet and let Manny commit. He slips Manny’s first left and connects with a solid right counter. After that happens a few times, Manny stops throwing the left hook and loses one of his biggest weapons. Easy UD from there.

You think no one has ever attempted to draw Mayweather with feints?

  • WC says:

Floyd Mayweather is no were near pacmans level thats why he wont fight the guy. Besides mayweather has to big of an ego to fight someone wiith heart and skill. in a short summary, Mayweather is scared of pacman.

  • M says:

Marquez wasn’t quick enough to exploit this weakness to the full. PBF is.

  • M says:

The second punch only hits its target if the fighter’s still there to be hit like Cotto often was. PBF won’t be and the rest of the combination won’t get thrown as he’ll be out of range or he’ll counter once the third’s on the way. Pacquiao pushes his punches out at the same pace – a counter puncher’s dream which is why he struggled against Marquez. Floyds the best counter puncher in the business bar none.

  • bigboxer says:

if they fight floyd will jab pacman all night long, he’s to smart of a fighter. he’ll do what marquez did to pacman counter punch with no probs

  • M says:

If you watch the Mayweather Marquez fight carefully you’ll see Marquez can’t so much as make a twitch at a punch without Floyd reacting to it so it can’t be thrown. It wasn’t that Marquez was too slow, it was down to the way PBF reads a fighters movements. He senses their balance shift almost instantaniously. Manny won’t get near him often enough – maybe once or twice, but no where near enough to either win the fight or stop him. PBF all the way.

  • M says:

The fight will definitely happen. Curious how no one has linked Floyd Senior’s behaviour in the run up to the Hatton Pacquiao fight might have something to do with this. Do you really think he just did that, or do you think he knew little Floyd stood to make more money by fighting Pacquiao than fighting Hatton again? I reckon it was intentional as it put Hatton in a bad position for the fight. He wouldn’t have done that unless Floyd had every intention of fighting Pacquiao. Marquez wasn’t chosen for the money – he was chosen because he was the best warm up fight for Pacquiao. It’ll happen and they’ll do it at 50/50 and at 147, guaranteed. They both stand to make too much and its the only way it’ll happen. Eventually, unless Manny does something daft like fight Moseley first – that should be his last fight when Shane’s that little bit older and slower.

  • eric sean says:

Mayweather will yell how he want to fight pacquiao then sabotage this fight in negotiations. His whole legacy hinges on that perfect record and he won’t risk it for all the money in the world. Pacquiao’s legacy is allready safe no matter what happens although he doesn’t play it safe with opponnent selection or how he fights. Mayweather is all about safety.

  • G.O.A.T says:

pacman should fight williams or mosley, because the fight with mayweather is hard to realize, there is no way they can negotiate fare and square….my opinion

  • Ray.S says:

shoulder roll is not impenetrable. The problem with marquez, barrera, morales, delahoya, hatton, diaz and cotto was they under estimate pacuiao. Thye said apcquiao is all left hand and is a brawler, at every fight you see him do different strategy and techniques.
diaz fight = in n out
delahoya fight = straight left lead
    hatton = right hook
    cotto = left uppercut

lets forget about the rest since pacquyiao admitted that he didn’t look at tapes/videos of fights before the 2nd marquez fight. the 2nd marquez fight taught him to study opponents on video with freddie r5aoch and together they devise a plan/strategy.

if you look at floyd shoulder roll, the ribs are open to the side, and when the shoulder rolls, the face opens up from above. with the amount of work rate and punching power pacquiao have on those fists, he’s going to break down floyd. 4 shots to the body and a left overhand to the head.
look at the floyd fights and study it….
pacquiao’s going to break him down if floyd stays on the rope.

  • benzo says:

Believe me it sounds good but it will never happen. Floyd will prob. fight
    camancho sr. or chavaz sr.

  • Team J&J says:

    To everybody:

Why people keep saying that pac took cotto shot. The shots pac took from cotto are not even near as powerfull as he really hit at 147, those shots was at 145 with no power thats was obvious. even like that pac say sunday morning that nobody have ever hit him in the face like that. Lets face the damn true. Pac is a good boxer but since 140 he have not beat anyone on 147, dlh who was drain out and old and cotto who was alos drain out. Lets put it like this, if pac is that great then go 147 and face floyd, floyd is wating for him. Cotto when down to 145 right? ok so now is pac turn to go up to 147 right? So who is the damn chicken then?

  • truwelter says:

hey zinc,if you’re a true fan of the sport, wouldn’t you rather see pacquiao against williams or mosley who would slug it out with him rather than mayweather who would dance and jab throughout the fight?! zinc, i think your just one of the many millions who don’t know anything about the sport, that are caught up in a pacquiao vs. mayweather fight…

  • Zinc says:

What has this article got to do with shane mosely, Paul Williams or pernell for that matter???? Geeez this place is getting worse

  • Andrew M says:

Why’s that then? Because you wrote the word period in capital letters? Haha get a grip

  • benzo says:

I AGREE I WOULD RATHER SEE PAC AND MOSLEY FIGHT.
MAYWEATHER COULDN’T HOLD PERNELL WHITTIKER JOCK STRAP IN HIS PRIME.

  • Jorge Lugo says:

    Mayweather sucks, PERIOD!

  • tanginamoliam says:

NICE UNBIASED ARTICLE… THIS IS WHAT WE NEED!

  • truwelter says:

i want to see paul williams come back down to ww to fight the hype machine…consistent jabs and combinations all night for the “punisher” on the face and body of the “hype machine”….

  • ISKA says:

roach & team will prepare hard for this. more so manny. i dont see them training again in the philippines bec. of distractions. manny can take floyds punches no doubt but manny needs to catch floyd because he will definitely run allnight to keep from being hit. no toe to toe, just plain hit & run tactics by floyd.
if i were roach, i’ll employ a wait & hit tactics: let floyd come to manny. if floyd runs, then manny shld wait.
then the whole world will be bashing both fighters for having a boring fight. guess who gets the bigger blame?

  • Stuart Gant says:

Great article and I tend to agree with everything you’ve said. I therefore do agree with the outcome. However Pacquiao’s power seems to be greater with every fight so I hope Floyd doesnt get hit

  • se16 says:

toe 2 toe no chance pac man 2 throw punches all nite pink floyd 2 block pray the pac man wins.mayweathers the greast boring fighter work that one out

  • geo says:

I would much rather watch a Pacquiao vs Mosley fight. That would be one for the ages IMO. Why? It would be much more of a fight rather than a counter-fest mayweather would bring to the ring.

  • Paul Mason says:

Pacquiao to win by KO. The Pacman will be on full attach attack and will frustrate Mayweather. He will lose his temper then get knocked out

  • Al says:

Good article. Mayweather is quick, but I think Manny is faster and stronger as a puncher – this will be the difference. Speed kills. I see Manny winning the fight on points. Mayweather won’t be able to hit Manny as much has Manny will hit him.

Does anyone have any idea of what month in 2010 this fight is being planned for?
