Pacquiao defeats Cotto: Pacman cements his place as a legend

cotto4Photo credit: Naoki Fukuda – By Amar Jahangir: 5 hours ago, Manny Pacquiao humiliated the so called warrior Miguel Cotto on Saturday night at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, stopping Coto in the 12th round. So many people on this site gave me stick when I said The Pacman will easily destroy Cotto. So many people were Anti- Pacman. But despite the hatred he came and cemented his place as one of the all time greats in boxing. Pacquiao has retired Oscar, he has destroyed the self proclaimed 140 best and now he has humiliated Cotto in front of millions watching.

Pacquiao’s power was unreal to behold, I suggest they check Pacmans glove for any illegal substance as that seems to be the excuse when Cotto loses. There was no cheating you Pacman haters, his speed made his punches twice as strong as they were. He made Cotto’s power look worthless. His in and out movement was simply outstanding but what I was most impressed with was his intelligence. Pacman lured Cotto into false sense of superiority in the first round; he then bullied Cotto by pouncing on him and taking him apart bit by bit. In the end you had Cotto running like a little dog from Pacman, you had the big man with so much power forced onto the back foot and counter hitting. Everytime Cotto came out of his shell he got smashed. I said this would happen, but did you listen?

I will also make another prediction; Pacman will knock that disgraceful American out. Like a typical American he is a coward and ducks everyone who poses a threat. He picks on the small fighters way below his weight. The coward should be banned from boxing, I dare this pathetic yank to come out and take his deserved beating like a man. Mosley, Cotto and now Pacman will be the list of boxers he will duck because he knows he will simply get destroyed.

Ya gotta give credit for cotto he’s a tough boxer! Pacman was just too much for him.. THUMBS UP for both of em..

  • wanderer says:

    Nice article.

Pacquaio vs. Mayweather would be a walk in the park for Pacman. Mayweather’s got nothing to show except for his ability to run, if that’s what they consider defense. I would only agree that Mayweather has got defensive skills if he can shy away from Pacman’s punches head-to-head. If pacman’s punch landed percentage is way below 50%.

For me, the only boxers who has a chance of beating Pacman is Marquez and Mosley because of their style. They also throw considerable punches that may out-boxed Pacman. The question is if they can take on pacman’s power punch.

Marquez now knew and that made the difference in their fight.

For Mosley, it will remain to be seen.

i think cotto did great.. he hurt manny a lot of times… (manny said so himself in the post fight interview that cotto punches like hell and those punches that did land hurt him, look at his swollen ear).. although the punches landed by cotto hurt pacquiao, packy could just withstand the pain.. meanwhile, cotto could not take manny’s punches ( he kissed the canvas twice, didn’t he?) … cotto’s face was just a bloody mess!!!

I’m sorry Amar. I disagree with your definition of a typical American.

    Be specific.

  • Lol says:

    krimo: GTFO! KThnxbai

Amar: I’m a Pacquiao fan, but you can’t call Cotto a “so called warrior” He pretty much proved last night he was a “True” Warrior.

  • krimo says:

i think pac should be tested honestly i do believe now he is on something. you just cant come up in weight and destroy people the way he has done in his last 3 fights.think about it people he looks absolutely unstoppable.

  • Belden says:

Cotto trained to beat a speedster for 2 months roach knew this. So Roach made a boulder instead through kick-boxing body hardening technique popular in asia and cotto has no more game plan because he found out his body punches dont work anymore.

When you have no more game plan i dont care if the margarito fight never happened you will lose.

  • Mario says:

Cotto hasn’t been the same fighter since the margarito fight. Its sad to see someone do that to someone. If manny would of fought the older cotto manny would of not had a chance i don’t care what anyone says. Manny Is not a great fighter his just anothe mayweather that knows how to pick his fights. fighting a beat down miguel cotto is not very copetitive. First a burnt out oscar then a c average hatton and now a mental and physical hurt cotto due to a cheater margarito. Its sad to see a great fighter go through so much pain only he knows how he truly feels.

  • 22guns says:

Just bring Mayweather in I “heard” he’s a good boxer maybe he can teach the no 1 PFP some boxing lesson, of course after the “Pacman” beat the hell out of him first.

  • hasbeen says:

Where do you get of calling all Americans cowards, It takes a brave man to sit at his keyboard and talk BS. Bring your self to America and stand on a street corner and start calling people cowards and see what happens .

  • UkanSodOff says:

Hes certainly cemented it in my opinion. There were questions about Hatton and DLH and questions about fighting a proper healthy Light Welter or Welter.

I aint guna question Cotto as a top notch Welterweight. They all dont look their usual self against Pacquiao but thats cuz Pacmans making them look bad.

Well done man as boxers go your proving to be somewhat special.

  • sunday says:

where is manuel perez. i was becoming so sick of those articles every day talking about how pacman’s training was not going according to plan . about how he was whooped by his sparring partners, about how cotto will beat up pacman, bust his nose, cut his eyes and so on . cotto’s trainer said cotto will blow pacman back to the feather weights. plz guys do not talk about the catch weight cos all these bragging were done despite the weight. cotto and his fans should take the defeat as it is. cotto is still one of the best in the world.

  • JC says:

Great fight for Manny he realy is out of this world. See him last night I was realy impres with his abilities to box and literaly destroy a great champ.

Everybody know I am a Cotto fan but I have to say that Manny was to much for him, he fought and try to do all and Manny was superior in all aspects.

I think Mayweather have a little problem now.

  • the5th says:

This website is a joke. I only came on here yesterday and I see the worst writing around. A couple of writers talk sh*t about Manny Pac and the other half talk sh*t about Cotto. No one on here has expressed any kind of respect for both fighters, all they are doing with their horrible writing is getting people heated from both camps to get people commenting and coming back to the site to generate site hits. People, you need to stop coming to this site.

  • Saad says:

ditto. Manny is humble, in victory or defeat, and that’s why he’s so likeable. so is Cotto. they both gave their best. but Manny was better. I’m a HUGE Cotto fan for several years and I respect him more after this fight.
boxing is about courage and character. as long as a boxer is loyal to these two ideals, he or she’ll never be loser.

God bless both of these warriors.

  • Mike says:

    Amar Jahangir,

You shouldn’t be a column writer for your biased, prejudiced, and childish attitude.

  • benzo says:

pacman is my man but i feel that shane will knock him OUT. prettyboy will just lay on the ropes and pot shot pacman, he will not bang with him.

  • bulldog777 says:

The tandem of PACman and Roach prove once and for all that they are the best- a perfect boxer for a perfect trainer. Many thanks to both of you for reviving the sports of boxing. With manny and freddie expect for a boxing match worth watching.

  • john says:

No more excuses. No more ifs and buts. Pacquiao was the better fighter even Coto admitted that. Coto was a warrior and a great one himself. But lets give Manny his place in boxing history. After last night’s performance, the doubters should shut up. Enough said!

  • TKO says:

Great fight and worth waking up at 2am to watch it! Although the undercard was awful.

I was rooting for Cotto but I have to say Pacquiao was far to quick, clever and stong. I am really struggling to think of anybody who could really test him. However if Cotto had stuck to his game plan, kept a tight defense and picked his punches he might of done a little better. I dont think he would have ever won though.

I dont see the Mayweather fight happening to due a clash of ego’s but you never know.

  • RMC says:

Really amazing fight, I’ll be honest as a neutral I thought Cotto was going to be too big and strong for Pac and fighting at WW against an elite champion may have been a step too far and for the first round I thought it looked like it was going that way, I honestly thought LWW was Pacmans ceiling, how wrong was I!. Great performance by Pac he really did cement his legacy last night and a fight with Floyd is a must based on that performance. I think a 40/40 split, winner picks up the other 20% is a fair deal this fight NEEDS to be made. I’m only sad to say this article sucks Cotto is still a true warrior and the author should to exercise a little humility. Pac was gracious in victory shame the writer of this article does not follow suit.

  • Pacman says:

Whose next? Whose next? Whose next?

  • ZKO says:

Three years ago, when Pac was still a featherweight, there were talks about him fighting Hatton and I thought it was not physically possible for Pac to move from featherweight to light-welter and take on the elite of that division. I thought in moving up weight, something would give (he’d lose his speed or power or ability to take a punch from an elite light welter). It’s absolutely amazing that Pac was able to do this… even now at 145 against an elite like Cotto. Finally, Pac is not just winning fights, but dominating… really amazing.

  • Justin says:

Good article until you bashed Americans. Please don’t lump all boxers in a opinion becouse of Floyd Mayweater….American warrioes, I can think of hundred boxers who did not duck anyone. One comes to mind Enander Holyfield!

  • ha ha ha says:

SLAP YOUR ARTICLE TO LIAM SANTIAGO AND MANUELPEREZ THOSE ARE DUMBS!!!

  • bill says:

it’s funny how the definition of a “warrior” loosely changed from pre-fight to post-fight. pre-fight, being the “warrior” that he is, he will definitely beat up pacman so badly and win the match.
post-fight, being the “warrior” that he is, he fought bravely despite the punches and beating up done to him by pacman.
warrior or not, he still lost. and that makes him, by definiton of the word, a loser, right?

  • bill says:

there will always be sour grapers. regardless of anything, pacquiao beat up cotto. end of story.

  • Saad says:

    and whats with american bashing?
    a list of american boxers:
    Muhammed Ali
    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Jake LaMotta
    Rocky Marciano
    Joe Frazier
    George Foreman
    Mike Tyson

if you know anything about boxing, you’ll read over that list and realize that the greatest boxers in the world are americans.

  • Saad says:

    miguel IS a warrior.
any one standing after the kind of beating he took is a warrior.
any one who is so dignified in defeat as Miguel was is a warrior. seriously, walking to pacman’s corner and embracing him was the stuff of champions.
any one who doesn’t make excuses for himself is a warrior.

miguel wasn’t humiliated in this fight. if anything, i think he’s got even more fans now than before because they say courage, heart and dignity on the display. backpedalling against an opponent isn’t cowardice. cowardice is ducking opponents or making excuses or quitting without a fight.

  • Juan Manuel Marquez says:

I will beat Pacquiao any time, any day.

  • THE GOLDEN FAN says:

Great win for Pacman! I am Puertorrican and i was rooting for Cotto last night even though i was a Pacman fan also. My hats off to the filipino and congratulations to all filipinos on this victory. Even though my countrymen lost i cant help but feel proud for Manny and his people. He is great in and out of the ring and thats why you cant hate him. Kudos to Cotto to keep on fighting even though he had no chance after the first half of the fight, true warrior. This writer ishorrible and has no respect for boxing. Why write about it?

  • LG-Japan says:

I almost agree on everything you said, But please do not ADD color (WHITE, BROWN, american, Filipino, Mexican.. Etc) That is why the world is all messed up. because of your rascist son a b—..

But anyway, Pacman proves to all that he deserve to be No#1 P4P and he makes boxing entertaining.

  • lakes says:

i couldnt believe what i saw yesterday. i thought that cotto would be a force to be messed with for pacman because he’s a real solid welter. i understand that cotto had to make the catch weight and it could have affected him so i dont really know what to think because he looked strong to begin with, took afew big shots and began to fold, i was in shock that cotto was doing that. From then on i have to rate pacman highly. I rated him before, even before the marquez fights, lost a little respect because of the de la hoya farce, but now i give him all his dues. He really is a modern great and im glad to be in the era to view such talent. Mayweather is my ultimate present fav because of all the skill he posseses, and as of rite now, i still lean more towards mayweather winning if they fite, but it would be a tough job. Pacman now will dismantle marquez.

  • Badger says:

I’m glad for you, I really am, but is that any excuse to write an article like a spoilt 6-year old? Cotto is a warrior, and he proved that by finishing the fight on his feet. Despite Pacman hitting him with everything he had, he just didn’t have the power to put Miguel Cotto down for good. I was also very impressed with amount of clean, flush shots Cotto managed to land on Pacquiao. It was a surprise to me that he managed to take these shots without being badly hurt- I thought big hits from Cotto would have had more of an effect- however if I was a big Pacquiao fan like yourself, I’d be more than a bit worried by the number of big shots Pacquiao managed to walk right on to. Had any of those shots carried a bit more purpose, it could have been a different fight. Hopefully then, Mayweather will be next. And I still fancy Mayweather to do a job on Pacquiao. Regardless of this impressive performance, I think Mayweather will have the beating of him. Take the amount of punches Cotto landed on Pacquiao, and double it. Then take the amount of punches Pacquiao landed on Cotto, and divide it by about 3/4. That’s more how a Mayweather Pacquiao fight will play out

  • shutyerpiehole says:

Hey Amar, don’t quit your day job, dude. Maybe some remedial english lessons?

Brilliant win for Manny. Hated to see Cotto get busted up like that.

Pacquiao is going to pose serious problems for ‘pretty boy,’ IF the fight can be made. We shall see…

  • Ray.S says:

where’s manuela perez and liam santiaho now? what’s there excuses?

hats off to cotto, a true warrior, fought with heart and courage and took the lose with dignity.
Held your head up high Miguel, no shame in losing the way you fought and the way you conducted yoursefl.

  • Mr_A says:

Good, good fight and article not like some others on here. Pacquiao showed why he is regarded as the P4P king, true skill on display that simply wasn’t matched on the night.

Forget all the rubbish about weight draining yada yada and give credit where credit is due.

Pacquiao is simply amazing end off, bring on Mayweather!!

  • Hats-off to Miguel Cotto! He is a true brave heart to tackle those punches.
    Mabuhay Ka Manny Pacquiao!!!

  • james says:

plus cotto is a warrior… he soldierd on and wasnt going to give up untill the ref stopped it

  • james says:

ricky wasnt self proclaimed…. he had the belts and the rankings

  • Mike says:

O for god sake manny won the fight but calling cotto a so called warrior? Are you stupid? Cotto is a warrior and until you get in the ring and prove yourself to the world and prove you have the heart of a champion don’t question cotto.

  • dkelly says:

pacmans power is unreal no doubt he is p4p the best out there he should clean up the ww division now if mayweather wont fight go for mosley he will beat them all
