Pacquiao – Cotto: Post fight thoughts

By Jamie Hooper: Even though the fight pretty much went as I predicted in my last article, I was still surprised my some elements of the fight. I was always sure the fight would last beyond the middle stages, mainly due to mutual respect and a lack of risk taking by both fighters.
What surprised me the most was Pacquiao’s reaction to being hit, or should I say lack off reaction. The punches from Cotto didn’t seam to bother Pacquiao in any noticeable way. When Pacquiao stayed on the ropes for longer than he should, giving Cotto a chance to ruff him up a bit. I had no feeling that Pacquiao was in much danger, almost like he wanted to stay there to show that Cotto couldn’t hurt him.
In the later rounds Pacquiao was looking for a knock out. Cotto’s ambitions seamed to change, to going the distance. He got on his bike, and started picking Pacquiao off with jabs. In doing so surprisingly winning a round. But he couldn’t keep running, Pacquiao although getting annoyed by having to chase, was always there with the relentless pressure I was expecting.
In the last two rounds, the Cotto corner where clearly having uncomfortable flash backs to the Antonio Margarito fight. This time instead of hoping Cotto could turn it round, I think they just wanted him out there. His wife and kid had all ready left the area.
I have no doubt people will say Cotto was weight drained. And that’s why Cotto’s power wasn’t having much effect. I simply believe Pacquiao just had too much for him.
Pacquiao punching in my opinion have gone up a level since his close fights with Juan Manuel Marquez. His punching is so unpredictable and fast. You feel a knockout punch can come at anytime.
Hopefully this fight will provide some much needed closure for Ricky Hatton. All the “what if” situations that’s been mulling in his head might finally be silenced. Regardless of how Ricky boxed on that night he must surely now know that Pacquiao is on a different level.
As the fans excitement now turns to a dream fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. All I can say is I’ll been hoping this fight is announced before Christmas. It should be the duty of all boxing promoters to make sure it happens. Boxing needs this fight, and hopefully the fans will demand it.
If he bets Mayweather, an interesting question is: where do you rank Pacquiao among the greats. My controversial answer to that is, if he beats Mayweather I’d put Pacquiao above Sugar Ray Robinson and Leonard as the best off all time.

man pacquiao had 3 loses as of now this 2 losses was when hes still fighting AMATEUR boxing he was like only 15yrs Old!he only had 1 lose and its because of a big cut from head bat!i can say hes a great fighter because he beats the bigger fighter than him and also fighting best of the best fighter in their DIVision and the only boxer who got 7titles in 7 dif Div!MANNN….

Are you people stupid or something? Cotto is shot because he lost one fight? Hatton is shot because he lost one fight and to a great fighter? Losing one fight doesn’t make anybody shot…Geez not everyone is undefeated ya know except for mayweather. Just because Cotto lost once and to a cheater does not mean his career is over. c’mon you guys are idiots! i agree with onin, all these guys that pacquiao had beaten became weight drained, shot, overrated, and so on right after the fight. but prior to their fight with the pacman, these same fighters are the favorites to win over pacman. after the fights however, when pacman beats them all, these excuses begin to surface which is a complete opposite of what the others had predicted and suggested that these guys are stronger, bigger and far more talented than the pacman.
When I say I hate his fans, I don’t mean the Filipino people. I’m glad for them to have such a champ.
Cotto definitely shouldn’t retire. He’s still great in my eyes and can still do a lot for boxing. He got beat fair and square and admitted this himself. He’s very humble in all his fights. a true hero.
Pacquiao is a very skilled and accomplished boxer. I don’t hate Pacman. I just hate his fans.
I’d like to see a Pac Vs Mayweather fight but please, no more catch weights? The division is already the catch weight. If you can’t raise your weight to match the opponent you’re challenging, tough luck.
All of these anti-pacman won’t give him the credit that he deserves coz they couldn’t accept what they have just witnessed. A small guy who started out as a lightweight just poo-pooed the power shots of a legitimate welterweight, and carried on to win 7 titles.

Congrats to Manny!! Awesome performance. He defintely man-handled Cotto more than I expected. I expected Manny to outpoint Cotto but not make him quit. Moving on to the possible match against PBF. I’m a big Pacman fan but Floyd’s defense will be a key for his success. However, speed and power of Manny will penetrate thru his defense. I believe it will the best match-up ever. In this era, we will finally see a Trilogy between these two fighters. Put aside the 40-0 and 7 division titles. Pacman has to be a better boxer and Floyd has to transform to a slugger. Let’s not underestimate and overestimate. Let’s make it happen……Go Manny!!!

A lot of people think calling Manny a GOAT is sacrilege because the man arguably only has 2 or 3 punches as opposed to the top 10 GOATs that had a whole arsenal of punches and could box moving in all directions. Personally I think this is the very reason why Manny has earned the right to be labeled as a GOAT. With JUST 3 weapons he was able to achieve what he has.
Don’t know about you guys, but am more impressed with a dude that could beat Goliath with a sling and stone rather than a guy with a whole range of missiles at his disposal… i.e. Manny has fully exploited the potential of those 3 punches. He doesn’t really need all the flamboyant techniques. Basic KISS rule. Keep it Simple, Stupid..

Why do we have to equate a loss of a fighter to being SHOT? Remember that Pacquaio lost more fights than COTTO and notably to Morales who is great at that time. And many would argue that MARQUEZ got a better of him in their fights. Would that also make PACQUAIO a shot fighter and yet continues to win for greatness?
If he had controversial win against MARQUEZ, it is simply because in my opinion, his power is dwindling in that weight. He’s also draining himself on that weight and logically needs to move up to keep his power. That’s the reason why at this weight he’s punching power has not diminished. It’s not more powerful than I think but stayed the same since this is now PACQUAIO’s comfort weight. He’s skills and strength to take power shots just got a notch higher.

I don’t think Cotto is shot. No. He has seemed a little mentally disturbed since the margarito loss but who knows how he feels. I agree with mario that Pacquiao and the platypus Freddie Roach pick and choose fights as of late, and want their opponents to come down in weight to fight to give them an advantage. It’s strange to see a naturally bigger fighter come down to fight an opponent and look smaller than the naturally smaller fighter as cotto did in this fight. If Cotto had not been caught by that uppercut in the 4th, I think the fight would’ve been much much more competitive through the rounds. I’m not trying to say pacman’s skill is overexagerated because the guy is truly supernatural, but in no way did this fight show that Cotto is a shot fighter. Look at Juan Man marquez, he was beat by pacquiao not long ago, and he came back to fight friggin Floyd mayweather! Cotto will do the same and return greater than he was before. He seemed to take his loss very well too and seemed more humble in his interview with larry merchant. He even said that there is much more road on his path which means he is still confident in himself and will return. Pacquiao is no doubt a magical fighter, but what heart Cotto has and he is still a warrior.

No matter how much cotto trains he will never be the same fighter. Its a mental problem more than anything and like I said only he knows how he feels. His face now gets swollen and cut like never before of course his not gonna be able to see where the punches are going.I believe its best that cotto just retireds. Cotto trained to beat a speedster for 2 months roach knew this. So Roach made a boulder instead through kick-boxing body hardening technique popular in asia and cotto has no more game plan because he found out his body punches dont work anymore.
When you have no more game plan i dont care if the margarito fight never happened or if you are mayweather you will still lose.
What an amazing fight. They HAVE to make the mayweather fight now. I cant help but feel though that Cotto’s corner should have thrown it in earlier, in the 9th or 10th. Cotto hasn’t been the same fighter since the margarito fight. Its sad to see someone do that to someone. If manny would of fought the older cotto manny would of not had a chance i don’t care what anyone says. First a burnt out oscar then a c average hatton and now a mental and physical hurt cotto due to a cheater margarito. as for Cotto, I don’t believe he’s shot. i doubt that’s true. he’s just been through several tough fighters. and that happens when you fight tough fighters. Margarito, Clottey and the P4P Pacman champion in between five fights. and he fought all of them hard and well and took them for 10+ rounds. that’s three of the best fighters out there today.
if this was true then i could argue that ali was shot after his return: he lost to joe, lost to norton while heading in for the Foreman bout? but was he really shot? Roberto Duran quit against Leonard, got OWNED by Hearns but then went on to win the title.

I honestly think Mayweather will take this fight. If he’s after the money, then this is his biggest payday. If he’s after the glory and recognition, then nobody will take him seriously if he doesn’t fight Pac. I also think, after last night, he’ll be encouraged. Cotto landed an awful lot of clean hard shots on Pac, especially when countering. PAC seemingly walked on to a big shot whenever Cotto tried to counter. The problem of course is, getting those shots off without being tagged yourself. Mayweather will know he has the capability to avoid an awful lot of the shots Cotto took last night, and he also knows if Cotto can hit PAC cleanly, and on the counter, then he can hit him twice as often. I think people underestimate Floyds punching power as well. I’m surprised Cotto’s bug shots had little effect on PAC, but I think if Floyd hit him as clean as Cotto had, he’d of been on the seat of his pants at some stage.

It must have been demoralizing for Cotto to hit Manny with his best shot and not have any effect.
