It is interesting because according to the book I read about Johnson he was eventually imprisoned for taking a ‘white’ woman across US borders.

You’s think a President born of a mixed race marriage would pardon such a thing especially as I’m sure Johnson’s decendants would appreciate the gesture.

wrong heavy g the reason they didnt allow white fighters to defend against black fighters is that at that time most white people held the believe that whites where better or superior to other races and if a blackman beat a white man ther stupid ideas would be shoun to be lies. as for johnson not fighting other black fighters i dont know his reasons you may be right on that point.

The notion that Jack Johnson was an swell guy who was being persecuted by the ‘The Powers that Be’is a huge oversimplification. The reason that most authorities dont want to get involved with the pardon is that, in fact, all the evidence indicated that Johnson was guilty of violating the White Slavery act. The act was intended to disallow the transport of women across state lines for the purposes of prostitution. Given that at least 3 of Johnsons 4 ‘wives’ were former prostitutes and that he was not above allowing them to earn money on the side, the charges were not without merit.

As for the color line in boxing, one of the heavyweight champions most guilty not defending the title against black challengers was…….Jack Johnson. The champion Johnson never accepted a challenge from a black fighter. And he did it for the same reason as the champions previous to him, in general, there was more money to be made defending against white challengers. Simple as that.
