Miguel Cotto vs. Manny Pacquiao: What bigger man?

By Saad Farooqi: Like always, I do not intend nor will I take anything from Manny Pacquiao. He’s singlehandedly led boxing into the next level with excitement and character like only once-in-a-generation superstars can do. While Pretty Boy Floyd merely emulates the arrogant, loud-mouthed banter that Ali practically invented, Pacman brings a humble, straight-forward and hard working character to the sport. His win over Miguel Cotto was nothing short of spectacular.

That said, let me say this as clearly as I can: Miguel Cotto is not bigger than Pacquiao. From the tale of the tape, Miguel’s hieght is 5″7 while Manny is 5″61/2 and the fight was at a catch weight of 145 pounds.

Still not convinced?

Then how about them having Manny have the same bicep size as Cotto (13″), Manny’s forearms being 1/2″ larger, the same reach of 67″, Manny’s normal chest being 38″ while Cotto’s is 39″ the same expanded chest size but his expanded chest size being the same as Cotto’s (notice how this shows the stamina difference between the two), the same neck size (16″) and larger calf size with Manny’s being 15″ while Cotto’s are just 12″.

The only thing Cotto has bigger than Manny is fist size which is 11″ compared to Manny’s 10″, a larger waistline (32″ as opposed to Manny’s waist being 28″) and larger thighs, with Cotto’s being 221/2 and Manny’s being 20″.

As said before, I don’t intend to take any thing from Manny. It simply proves that most “boxing experts” simply did not realize that the much talked about, so-called size advantage that Cotto apparently had never existed in the first place.

This does not take anything away from Manny’s win. Manny fought one of the best fighters the world had to offer and won in all departments that night. The last man who beat Cotto needed brick gloves to do it. All we need now is for Manny Pacqiuao to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr. and take his rightful place as the Pound For Pound King of boxing.

it was really great watching miguel actually go up to Roach and shake his hand with a slight bow…even after all that trash-talking Roach did. Miguel’s got amazing character.

  • Zher says:

Yes pacman has got no steroids that’s for sure

  • hehehe says:

Pacman is not on steriods or something… he is just simply a naturally born talented boxer.

maybe he has some hidden powers like an Amulet or
    something.

Rumors says that pacman has an amulet.

    :-)

    just kidd’n

  • c0remaster says:

I enjoyed the fight…worth my money, and for me, that’s all that really matters. That’s is the main reason why i always watch the Pacman’s fight. Always full of actions. Never a dull moment…it makes my heart beats faster than normal from the introduction to the last bell. I don’t care who is bigger or who isn’t.

  • luzonvisayasmindanao says:

ZHER, can you answer my questions earlier, what do you know about boxing asides from pacman?
you sure put alot time and energy writing about his bout with cotto and his potential bout with PBF…TALK TO ME BABY!!

  • Zher says:

    for everybody:

There is a person name LUZONVISAYASMINDANAO. He admires my comment. Do you think should i meet him? I think i am going to like him especially his bum bum.

    Love you, luzonvisayasmindanao, mwaaaah!!!

  • luzonvisayasmindanao says:

Zher, siguro bakla ka! bakla, bakla, bakla!!
gusto mo titi ce pacaman chaka puet na!!

  • Zher says:

When Pacman heard the rumour that Cotto is stronger than him. And Cotto will punch him in the body where we all know he had been knocked out before when he was in a lighter weight. And Cotto is a very dangerous puncher. You know what? He remember that and he prove Cotto’s fan wrong. He test Cotto strength and power in round 1 and 2 (i think) but he prove he can take punches from head to body. Now, I am very very sure he heard a rumour from Floyd Mayweather JR. that he said to the media that Manny Pacquiao is an EASY FOR FIGHT. I will tell you guys better WATCH OUT he will remember that word from PBF. He will make a very very HARD fight for PBF and he will do it a little personal for him because even his dad say something against Manny and Pacman never ever say something negative against his opponent he just only prove to the ring. He always say he never underestimated his opponent. That makes him more focus on the training coz he always feel he is not best fighter of all. That’s a good attitude because you will excel on your field if you just humble yourself unlike the big headed Mayweather.

Good luck to both fighters. I bet for PACMAN to win in 6 to 12 rounds TKO or stoppage from the referees.

    Zher

  • luzonvisayasmindanao says:

Zher, is pacman the only thing you know about in boxing? c’mon, please tell us more, like are there any significant fights these weekend or next? or your predictions on the super 6 super middleweight tournament? your favorite boxing commentator and professional writer?…educate us all on something about boxing not just pacman…

  • Zher says:

have you seen Cotto’s left side of his neck? very reddish. He will do that same to PBF. DOESN’t matter whether he will not punch PBF’s head nor his body. as long as he will hit him everywhere and anywhere. hitting head or body will happen only when opportunity comes. PBF will gonna feel Pacman’s stinging punch on his shoulder, arms and maybe neck, ribs and chest. In fairness to PBF he might take the punch of Pacman for a short round. But if Pacman will give 20 to 30 punches per round he will surely drain any middle of the round like cotto. Coz for PBF might give 2 to 3 combos against Pacman can take that punch easily or maybe not if HE is a lot stronger than COTTO.
C’mon guys PACMAN wins against bigger guys, no excuses please. He deserve an honor. I hope that PACMAN wins against PBF please no excuses or PBF wins no excuses as well. I promiz I will shut my mouth if PBF wins because he deserve it even I myself dont like his personality and his loud mouth like his dad. I go for Manny for TKO against PBF in any round possibly in round 6 to 12. Am sure Manny don’t have a desire to go for a decision because the loud mouth Mayweather Jr might say that judges were biased and say many excuses like he is on steroids etc etc. So the pressure would be for PACMAN to TKO PBF in any round to the PBF fans would be shut up and they will a resounding yes that he is truly a P4P king. Dont worry guys, I admire PBF’s skills and talent in boxing especially his defensive style but I really don’t like manners. Sorry. Good luck to both

  • kristi says:

is manny the god fearing person that he potrays himself to be? or just putting up a front? i heard at the moment his wife jinky is terribly heart broken because of accusations of infedelity…

  • buboyfernandez says:

pac, please defend your title on a regular basis..
you haven’t proved anything to me and many others until you defend it in succession like what ali, holmes, arguello, marciano, leonard, chavez, hagler, spinks did and i can go on and on…. the 3 or 4 pounds that you gain everytime you win a belt is not as a big deal as non true fans potray it to be…how about 160 lbs to 200 lbs that roy jones conquered?! that’s what i call accomplishment! that’s an average of about 8 to 10 lbs for every championship belt…beat that!

  • beater says:

No, he is not a welterweight. Pac is a natural lightweight or featherweight.

Pacquiao ate 5 times a day consuming over 6500 calories in order to gain weight to 145lb. Normal person consumes 1500~2000 calories only.

Natural welterweight Cotto was training ahead to reduce his weight to 145lb.

Watch the fight, you can see the body frame difference between Bulldog Cotto and Tasmanian Devil Pacquiao.

  • roy says:

pac has fantastic foot work, and can knock you down even as he going backward and getting hit, even off balance.. with ether hand, somehow he planting his heel down solid while skipping around on his toes, roy jones, chris bird, ali, sudger ray are boxer on their toes, and they don’t much have the ko power
.boxing is a trade off one or the other, you can have speed if you don’t close your fist, but you give up power, same as flat foot fighter.more power but slower moving around .manny a first boxer with super speed and ko power.he somehow planting that back foot for maximum power in a split second.

  • motownhitman says:

As for Pac, he does not have a large frame, however he has little to no body fat and muscle obviously weighs more than fat. I suspect he has a very high metabolism and if you couple that with low body fat you have a guy that does not gain weight as quickly as other fighters. Lets be honest most fighters walk around at a much higher weight than what they fight at.

  • roy says:

pac just good…….. out this utube 180lb bubba eats it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrCj6MsI1gc&feature=fvsr

  • Ginger Don says:

When Pacman was fighting at 130, he would drain himself to make that weight, his actual weight on the night was 146, only a couple of pounds lighter he fights at today, he is a bigger man who is able to get down low, like Paul Williams. In terms of size he is much closer to your Cotto’s and Mayweather’s than he is to other more natural featherweights, whats amazing was his ability to fight at 130 for all those years at that level!

  • Vince says:

No way a man can be bloated and cut up like Pacman,he’s on something, but like RJJ,we’ll won’t find out for about a year or two.You don’t move up in weight like he has in 1 1/2 yrs and look like that without taking something.Anyway its not gonna help him when he fights PBF,skills pay the bills.

  • Beater says:

Tim Says:” Manny weighed 108lb when he was 16! He has matured now and has come up in weight properly, you can’t say he is bloated.”

Tim. Pacquiao is bloated. He doesn’t know which is his fighting weight. He was a featherweight fighter from 2003-2008. March 2008, he fought Marquez at 130lb. Nine months later, he bloated himself to fight Dela Hoya at 147lb welterweight. This year, he deflated himself to fight Hatton at 140lb limit. Against Cotto, his trainer fed him 5 times a day with over 5000 calories to bloat him up again for 145lb catchweight. That’s facts!

I won’t be surprised if he will move up to challenge the middleweight division for a crack in 8 weight world title.

  • Saad says:

nepster, the bigger man was nearly identical in size, hieght and weight. that’s all i’m saying.

  • roy says:

super gotten…. that right steroid as with weight lifting makes you stiff, and slower, pac got faster, its not a good advantage in boxing ….and they test for 35 type of steroids

  • super goten says:

I don’t understand there r so many stupid people in this world!how can u say Manny is taking something that makes him win all the time? This guy train so hard and and being sparred with the bigger and best boxers .That is what make him so fast and too strong. I mean he deserved all the credit with the help of Freddie roach.Remember,he is just human like us it doesn’t mean he can’t lose the fight. He can only be that good with a limited strength and energy even if he takes steroid and if you hit him in the balls,or any weak spot he’s gone so when you think about it,Manny trains harder than any fighters and that’s what makes him one of the best period.

  • roy says:

why this fight is hard is pac team know floyd not going to honor the catch weight,so they give him that 147lb.don’t matter but floyd has to give 50/50 or better as pac still need to pay golden boy production his cut too,(lost it court)and floyd want the 60/40 so he can come in over and take the penalty get the advantage and break even.but floyd production wants this fight bad,so they force Floyd to give in, hopefully…..

  • roy says:

P……that true roach said manny will return to 149lb fight night.cotto guessing was around 155lb.so manny giving 6 lb but the fight even so both fasted,to make the 145Lb ,,catch weight are a bargaining tool helping in negotiation opposite of 60/40 etc.so floyd case he asking 60/40 so pac asking catch weight 145lb. so floyd gives 50/50 and pac gives 147lb,catch weight.so fight night pac will be 151lb and floyd around 157lb again pac giving 6 lb,it also help balance the betting books keep the fight within 10lb as you can only baloon back to a certain wight.

  • nepster says:

Saad – Pac wasn’t forcing a bigger man into being his size…he was forcing himself to be the size of the bigger man’s size.

  • airmoks says:

I cannot believe that after all the spectacular fights that Pacquiao had and fearlessly beating all the boxing greats in front of him, we still have doubters in his ability. No matter what he does, some people just don’t give him the credit that he deserves. We should just enjoy watching him while we can since we are witnessing one of the boxing’s greats. Maybe you need to put your money where your mouth is next time he fights, i.e. bet against Pacquiao and we’ll see what happens.

  • T Dogg says:

Floyd is the PFP King. The fight between Manny and Floyd is just a publicity stunt aimed at saving the sweet science from being extint. When the fight is made Floyd will dominate.

  • Saad says:

beating a bigger man who is forced into being your size is not beating a bigger man. enough of the hyperbole please.

  • Guest says:

zher – I highly doubt “Master” Roach would tell Pacquiao to go out there and punch Mayweather in the throat. Not sure if it’s an illegal punch, but I have seen 1 or 2 fights stopped because of this. As you say Pacquiao is a humble man who treats every opponent with respect, im sure he’s not going to go out there and try to intentionally hurt someone like that – it can be a fatal punch if caught properly in the wind pipe.

  • Zher says:

Those who are against PACMAN always do make excuses everytime PACMAN wins. It was really a resounding yes that PACMAN can beat a bigger guy from David DIaz, DLH, HAtton to Cotto. C’mon guys, open your eyes. I will eat the dust if Money will win against Pacman.
Hello, where is everybody? Now Eli, Alex and everyone who claims that they are scientist of boxing. Pls pls guys don’t underestimated pacman. Because Money Mayweather say something rubbish against Pacman. This is would be personal for Pacquiao. Pacman is a HUMBLE guy and he RESPECTS all his opponent including Money Mayweather. We will just prove it to them to the ring. He will do his best to TKO Mayweather in any rounds. To prove that he is not an easy fight for Money. Same he did to Cotto. He prove to Cotto fans that he is more stronger and can take body and head punches from Cotto. To Mayweather, I predict he (Pacman) will NOT go for the head punches only if opportunity comes but I heard from his master that part of their game plan is to hurt mayweathers ARMS, NECK, SHOULDER, RIBS, BODY, ARMS AGAIN , SHOULDER, AND SHOULDER AND SHOULDER AND ARMS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

  • iz says:

Pac is on something not steroids but something idunno some kind of hormone enhancement and until they find out how to test fot it we will never know..I like pac and all and what he brings to boxing however something is not right about him.from 108 to 144 and never slow down .when boxers go up weight there body changes manny hasn’t….one day the world will be shocked remeber I told u so

  • nepster says:

What they meant by bigger is that Cotto is NATURALLY bigger…Pac had to blow himself up to be Cotto’s size and Cotto’s more accustomed to that size. Pac had to consume 7,000 calories while Cotto basically starved himself the last couple of days. If you want to see the size difference, look at their pre-fight press conference pics.

  • r.a.w. says:

I just watched the replay again last night, and Manny is definitely not smaller than Cotto. Having said that, yes, Manny beat Cotto convincingly, but I thought he lost his last fight to Clottey, and should have gotten no more than a draw against Sugar Shane.

  • fab157 says:

Why can’t people have a difference of opinions without the name calling and disrespect!? Just a tought…

  • pisTOLPete says:

ur an idiot, what they meant by BIGGER is Cotto is Naturally BIGGER than Pac.

  • Saad says:

Bisdak, are you sure? i read that miguel weighted 149 in the fight.

  • Saad says:

beater, how can cotto look bigger when he’s got the same measurements as Manny?

wow…people really DO see only what they want to see.

  • P. says:

BisDak…how do you know this? HBO didn’t put up the Fight Night weigh-in numbers like they do usually…they should really do a fight nite weight in for EVERY fight if you ask me..just for our info. Anyway, i was just wondering where you go the weight info from.

  • BisDak says:

On fight night, 14Nov2009, Cotto came in at 156. Manny came in at 149.

  • Tim says:

    Beater,

Manny weighed 108lb when he was 16! He has matured now and has come up in weight properly, you can’t say he is bloated.

Great artcle, wish this site had more like it

  • beater says:

No matter how’s your statistics show, the physical look between the two is obvious.

Whether they stand side by side, back to back or facing each other – Miguel is BIGGER in any angle!

Miguel started his career as Jr. welter 140lb while Manny was a mere flyweight 108lb.

Manny bloated himself from 130lb last year to 145lb against Cotto in the match. Cotto has fought and dominated the welterweight 147lb limit since 2006.

The official fighting weight matters, not that body outline measurement, okay???.

  • Antionio Margarito says:

eh? Who has the juice now pendjo

  • MannyPacquiao says:

Well said, I noticed this before too and was surprised. Big shout out to Manny and hopefully all of the scandals about him and Krista are fake.
One more thing, as I have heard, read, and researched the fight with Pacquiao and Mayweather will happen in May 1st, 2010. Although I didn’t hear anything about the catch weight or the profits share.

  • DevinCrooner says:

What Rightful place? it’s PBF which should be
man Enough to Challenge PAC,D Best P4P (one of the all time greats) to take his place as the #1 P4P KIng AGain,But if the fight Materializes, I, Go for Mayweather on Points, if the Fight will Be at 147-Above, But @ 146 and Below, forsure, my MOney’s on PAC, I can SEE MAyweather using HIs Speed and Height advantage to MAke PAcquiao Work HArd to HIt HIm, But WAtch OUT< if PAC has the POwer to WIn BY KO, With Just one PunCH
