McGuigan sees Marquez fight as an “unnecessary risk” for Hatton – News

hatton452345354By William Mackay: Former world boxing champion Barry McGuigan feels that Ricky Hatton doesn’t have anything to left to prove and shouldn’t fight Juan Manuel Marquez, saying in an article in The Mirror “It’s a tough fight, an unnecessary risk.” McGuigan thinks that the huge amount of weight that Hatton would have to take off for a fight with Marquez would take a lot out of him, as would the sparring he’d have to do as well. There has been talk of Hatton coming back next year in 2010 for a bout against Juan Manuel Marquez.

It would be an exciting bout if not for the fact that Hatton was stopped in a brutal 2nd round knockout by Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd of this year. Hatton was old cold for at least three minutes after being nailed by a big left hand from Pacquiao. With a knockout as bad as that, it would be smarter for Hatton to work his way back into tough fights rather than risking all and taking on the tough Marquez.

It seems like Hatton is gambling that he’ll have enough left to beat the 36-year-old Marquez. And who knows? Maybe Hatton does have enough left to beat Marquez, but it’s still a risky thing for Hatton to do after a bad knockout loss like the one that he experienced against Pacquiao.

What makes it worse for Hatton is that he’s grossly let himself go and looks to be at least 40 to 50 pounds overweight. For Hatton to take that kind of weight off, it will require months of training and that will likely prevent Hatton from doing any quality sparring until the weight is off him.

McGuigan says “The world has moved on [since Hatton was stopped by Floyd Mayweather in December 2007], Ricky. It is time for you to do the same with pride.” McGuigan says that he gave Hatton only 18 months left in his career two years ago at the time that he was fighting Mayweather. It looks as if McGuigan’s estimation of Hatton’s time left in the sport is correct judging by Hatton’s knockout loss to Pacquiao and less than impressive performance against Juan Lazcano.

McGuigan sees the loss to Pacquiao as the “Natural end” for Hatton’s career. It may not have been the best way to end a career, McGuigan points out, but it should be where Hatton’s career ends.

Vicky is finished time to call it a day, Just a brawler no real skill, or ring generalship. Khan has a better chance against marquez. I don’t think Hatton should fight Khan either because Freddy has Hatton’s number and knows his flaws inside out as Pacquiao proved, and khan would do the same.

I admire Hatton. He wants to fight and shows no fear. My advice would be to really work on that defense of his and make his punches tighter, and not so wide. I’ve become fond of the philly shell. I wish Hatton the best of luck in the upcoming year.

  • THE PROFESSOR says:

Ricky should fight Zab Judah first then if he beats Zab then A fight against JMM would be good to see at 140 or 135.

mcguigan is right..the man is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to boxing.no more ricky!

Hatton is still young and with a most compelling reason to return…redemption. He actually did well with floyd up until the late round stoppage. As regards the pacman, well pac is a meatgrinding killa from manila and has performed in his last four to five fights well above expectation, above what convention would allow for what his humanly possible, much like bannister breaking the four minute mile…why should everyone manny schooled retire, from lelohonolo ledwaba to miguel cotto; especially if manny is performing at the level of an all time great, then getting knocked out by the pacman should be an honor, pick up the pieces, learn from this once in a lifetime beatdown and move on…just don’t fight manny again…but for hatton, marquez would be a reasonable matchup…

go hatton you can do it dont listen to mcguigan

  • Ancient_Silence says:

yeah, this is a tricky one.i think Ricky should carefully consider what he wants to get out of this fight with Marquez. Does he need the cash or does he want to get his pride back?
If its a pride thing he will definitely take the fight i think, the problem is i dont see Marquez being pushed around by Ricky, especially after getting schooled by Floyd. Marquez aint gonna stop any time soon.

  • mombo says:

ricky would eat him alive. literally!

  • carts says:

i started seeing the weight issues after the Tszyu fight. The fame and money surely contributed toward his embarrasingly pathetic weight debacle.

  • Mr Rich says:

Marquez weighed 142 lbs for his fight with Matweather and looked terrible…. slow and had no punching power. I think Hatton would give him a good fight at 140 lbs…. I dont think at this point in Hattons carreer he should waste time with tune up fights. If he gonna fight then fight the best available. At least he wont be accused of ducking anyone unlike other fighter who i wont mention.

RICKY IS A BUM, SEE CAN HE LURE THE PRINCE HAMED INTO A FIGHT ( NO WEIGHT LIMIT)

  • del boy says:

hatton has always let himself go in between fights with the weight i no and i wish he wouldnt i love watchin marquez hes a legend but after watchin him against floyd at welter he looked very slow the fight will probably be held at 140 i still think hatton will push through for a ud or sd no danger if he loses its time to call it a day .

so put that double cheese burger down and get to the gym HITMAN!!!!!

  • boxing fan#2 says:

if the fight takes place at 147 hatton has the advantage, if it takes place at 140 marquez has the advantage.
At what weight is going to take place?

  • mickeymarley says:

McGuigan, now there is a guy that knows his boxing. Any advise he gives should be takin in.

Go on Barry ya boy ye

  • ALAN BOSWORTH says:

i to echo wot McGuigan says.hatton as nothing to prove,he as had a great career.and yeh boiling back down to 140lb thats all wot will be on hattons mind in training.and will have to cut corners missing out on plenty of other things and could end up paying the price.if hatton goe,s ahead he should be looking at sept time, nothing b4.but i to would like 2c him call it a day.

  • Stevo says:

    Hatton should listen up….

    JMM wont stop…
