Mayweather vs. Pacquiao – Article 1 – Response!

By Jorge Lugo: It seems I have become a marked man on BoxingNews! All Floyd Mayweather Jr. followers have bashed me in regards to my most recent article stating “Floyd Mayweather Jr. is overrated, period!” Now fortunately for me, I couldn’t care less what the next man thinks. Instead, I agreed to go one on one with a writer who called me out. It seems Mr. Arshaid feels confident that he can not only impose an article defending Mayweather’s career, but as well as denying Manny Pacquiao of his greatness in his regards to his abilities against Mayweather. Lucky for me though, I have all the tools needed to not only prove how wrong he is, but to discredit him and EVERY Mayweather Jr. fan, in every form possible.
It is a true statement when people say, when we see Floyd’s fights we see him box smart, take his time, avoid any punishment, and stick to a game plan. That in every form is a true and agreeable statement. However, that was never my argument! When will people realize its not Floyd’s undefeated records, personal traits or the way he boxes that makes him overrated. It’s his lack of desire, pursuit and proven abilities against other good and great fighters that makes him overrated! Also note, I don’t think the general public has enough time in there day to care for or even say that they hate Mayweather Jr. What the simple and only truth is fans at the end of it all, probably would support him in every way possible, if he only went in there and fought reasonable and true opponents. I think that to say hate is too extreme, Mayweather is not even that close to importance in my life! I think if I was to describe it, fans are more annoyed with him then anything else.
Ironically, Arshaid feels that Mayweather’s personal characteristics are why he has achieved everything he has, this makes things ironic because I could not agree more. It’s what he HASN’T achieved in my eyes that makes him an AVERAGE fighter. His undefeated record argument is dead and tired. Julio Ceaser Chavez Jr is undefeated, does this make him the best P4P fighter out there? I think RA The Rugged Man said it best when he said, I would be 40-0 too if all I fought was girls(weaker opposition). His six world titles in five different weight classes argument looks great! But the fact is that they have 4 DIFFERENT belts in each weight class. Therefore, given his boxing record, that is a no value point as he has only fought and won those belts from weak opponents. This fact, also discredits the “16 time title defenses” argument.
This now brings us to the argument of Mayweather’s opposition. Nobody is debating the creditability of Mayweather’s opponents. Real boxing fans have all agreed that Mayweather’s opponents have either been past there prime, not good at all, or weak when they fought Mayweather. Again, we are not arguing Mayweather’s current record as it has already been proven to be weak and insufficient. De La Hoya was past his prime and ALMOST beat Mayweather Jr., Diego Corrales had heart but he was NEVER that good as he couldn’t match well against top performers, Judah who again is KNOWN for fading and losing in big fights, went the WHOLE 12 rounds with Mayweather Jr. and was in the fight till the 10th round! To argue that he has fought more higher ranked fighters than Pacquiao is silly because what history has proven is that the reputations of fighters is what made them great, not there ranking. Do you think people just love Manny Pacquiao because he is rated P4P fighter? I admit it has a nice ring to it, but the truth is, people LOVE Manny Pacquiao because he is ALWAYS involved in boxing fights that people don’t know if he can win. The fact that he does win just makes it an added bonus! Before the Cotto fight, no real fighting fan knew for sure who was going to win because of the given records and REPUTATIONS of both fighters being true warriors and fighting against the best. The fact that Pacquiao is pound for pound is because he FOUGHT the BEST and won when he wasn’t supposed to. Why can’t you guy’s see that?
This should also discredit your argument for Mayweather’s skills as anyone can look good when there fighting WEAKER opposition. Now if he was in the ring and was skillfully great with a Mosley, Cotto, Pacquiao, Williams, Berto or even Clottey then I am sure you would have a better time proving your point! You seriously need to realize that Mayweather Jr. has been in the welterweight division for a long time now and hasn’t fought ANY of the top fighters. Come on, man, seriously. Don’t be madd at me cause I speak the truth, this is what every REAL fight fan knows. O and for the record, when I say “Real fight fan” I am not saying Mayweather’s fans aren’t. I am saying real fight fans of boxing who want to see good fights where the best fight the best, that’s all! Again, if Mayweather fought and SHOWED his skills against true opposition he would get his respect. Ali is great cause he FOUGHT fighters like Foreman, as so with Leonard’s career and all the other fighters you mentioned, they ALL fought other great fighters! Don’t compare or mention Mayweather to them because you are simply just missing the point. To say Ali or Leonard ran from there opponents is false and sad, the fact is by Mayweather’s boxing RECORD we see that he and he alone has ran from top talent.
In closing I want to prove one more point, a point that I believe you are sincerely missing. If Pacquiao vs Mayweather happened tomorrow and Pacquiao lost, would that make Mayweather Jr. any greater or great at all? Or to reverse it, would Pacquiao still be considered one of the greatest? The truth here is simple, IF Mayweather fought Pacquiao and won he would have a STAKE in his claim as being the P4P fighter because he beat a man who beat the majority of the best out there, however, if Mayweather won would that give him the right to call it a career? Especially without fighting Mosley or any top fighter in his weight class? I am sorry but even then no one will give Mayweather credit because STYLES is what boxing is. This is why Cotto lost to Margarito only to have Mosley who lost to Cotto beat Margarito. To be the truest P4P fighter out there is not a title to say loosely. You have to go out there and fight the majority or all of the top fighters out there and win or lose in a close competitive manner. Why can’t you see that?
To answer my second question. If Pacquiao lost tomorrow he would still have a STAKE in claiming to be one of the greatest of all time because when he is long gone, REGARDLESS of his personal life, his RECORD would show that he has fought and given great competitive fighters with the top fighters out there. REGARDLESS of his win or lose record. Styles in the end is what boxing is, period. The key here is how to master and use your style to win OR give competitive fights to the other great fighters out there. That is the sole truth. So when you say “Manny Pacquiao is the greatest until he fought Mayweather” you are lying. Manny Pacquiao is already greater and one of the greatest fighters ever because he fought the best and even though it was always competitive for the majority of the time, he also won! Who really cares, how he doesn’t or does gets hurt, as long as you FIGHT the best.
As for the Olympics, more power to Mayweather, I am happy for him, 
. But again that has NOTHING to do with his PROFESSIONAL contributions to his boxing record or boxing in general. This also negates your falsified praising of his Amateur record. Mayweather Jr is now a PROFESSIONAL boxer, meaning he gets PAID to fight other fighters. Now the average person would NEVER fight for a living as it takes very hard and long commitment and discipline. But, if you ARE a professional fighter, isn’t it your responsibility to prove yourself and fight nothing but the best? Regardless of how you rank yourself, or how you feel about the other top fighters, isn’t that what this is all about? I said it once and I will say it again. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is overrated, PERIOD!

Money Mayweather will beat the heck out of Pacquiao. I know this, I could sense it right now. He can’t run this time because he has to proved himself to his fans. He has a beautiful screwing jab. Pacquiao will not see this coming because Pbf is faster.
Manny Pacquioa had fought fighters that people expect him to lose, but instead he fought them and won time and time again. When you put a fighter in front of Manny, he will fight them. Unlike Mayweather with his flurry of b.s. excused when he should not fight the fighter that is put in front of him. Personally, I enjoy watching the pacman fight because he is always thinking about his fans and the people who came to see him fight. The word for today is “fight” not “run”. Maywether will be Pacman’s toughest fight because he is not only trying to fight him, but he is also having to chase him around the ring. Personally, I think when Manny fight Floyed, he should just stand in the middle of the ring like what he did with Cotto and let the fans decide if he wants to fight or run…
if floyd ever gets around fighting mosely, after being a welterweight for such a long time, and win.. that is the only time i will consider him an all-time great. jeez… whatever respecct i have for him before diminished a bit after the marquez fight.. gosh its marquez’s first time in welterweight and he weighed (during weigh-in) 2 pound over the agreed weight (despite the nonsense they said that the damned contract was amended).
ALI is the best fighter, he dont have a perfect record. He got intelligence, skills and the heart of a true boxer. and heart is what flowd doesnt have.

In fact HBO should offer 40% of the proceeds of the total PPV count to the winner and the winner donate all that money to their choice…knowing Manny he’ll probably give it to the poor and floyd probably acquire more materialistic things or keep on bailing out Roger.
they should have the fight in Manila or in Cebu, or maybe one of the philippine islands…that would be MEGA-interesting…I bet this would be even more of a PPV seller…easily 10 million plus, if HBO and its cable and satellite affiliates are willing to charge a flat rate of $30 USD regardless if it’s in HD or SD! In 3rd world countries, $30 is a lot of money but even the poorest will do anything to watch the fight on TV…small price to pay to see the “people’s” champ.
This article would have a valid point if the obvious was not omitted. Every time Mayweather announces his next opponent “experts” say that he is going to get beaten. And as soon as he beats them easily his opponent’s all of the sudden become unworthy. And De la Hoya didn’t almost beat Floyd Mayweather. On the contrary. Mayweather almost got robbed. Pacquiao gets all this credit for beating the same guys that were “unworthy” opponents for Mayweather. Is this a double standard, or just a lower standard for Pacquiao? Marquez was too small for Mayweather according to the critics, but Pacquioa is shorter than Marquez. Yet, no one is saying that Pacquiao is too short for Mayweather. But as soon as Mayweather beats the crap out of Pacquiao easily, there will be those that try to discredit that victory too.

Pacquiao is a salmon that swims upstream facing the swiftest currents head on. PBF sits on a raft and floats downstream. Both fighters are winners but who gets the nod as having faced the stiffer competition? This is why Pacman is an all-time great while PBF is just a good fighter.
The belief that Mayweather poses the biggest threat to Manny Pacquiao is old news. This can surely come from those who belong to the league of scribes who were generally good at predicting the outcome of fights until they came upon the enigma called Pacman. And from then on, fight after fight, they ended up making the wrong predictions when it comes to a Pacman fight. For a true Pacman fan, there is no better satisfaction than seeing how so-called boxing experts get it WRONG whenever they pick against Pacman in a fight. This only shows how incredibly good Pacman is. Actually, I cannot blame these guys because it makes sense that non-believers, and neutrals alike would always get it wrong mainly due to the incredible odds Pacman faces ever since he started to move up in weight. While we’ve heard of great boxers testing the water first whenever they move up from their natural weight by facing less dangerous opponents. Pacman has this strange habit of picking the very best and the most dangerous fighter in his quest up the weight ladder. But even more amazing is how he managed to destroy each opponent, completely dominating them, with a couple even ending in some of the most beautiful knock-out we’ve ever seen. To take everything in perspective, you just name the 5 best and most exciting bouts in the last 2 years and many will agree that at least three or four belongs to the Pacman. This fact is supported by the awards accorded to the guy including the P4P top rank, best fighter of the year (06’ & 08’), not to mention being the fighter with the biggest if not one of the biggest pay-per-view purse over the last 2 years. All this coming from a guy who started fighting professionally at a mere weight of 106 lbs! But incredible as it may seem, even more mind-blowing is how many so-called ‘boxing experts’ will continue to get it wrong once Pacman gets in the ring again and they start looking at logics and math. They will never get it right with Pacman, because this is how it’s supposed to be when you’re an ENIGMA. At least I will once again have the satisfaction of seeing those jaws dropping once the gloves start booming. Jorge is one of the rare scribes who gets it right and to the point.

This fight will end up as stoppage. For historic reference, the analogy would be Meldrick Talor vs Julio Cesar Chavez I (war of attrition). Or a good blueprint would be the Jose Luis Castillo vs Mayweather I bout where JLC pounded PBF body and was very effective if not for highway robbery by judges. Manny can inflict more damage and will walk thru PBF defenses like Duran did to Sugar Ray Leonard in Montreal 1976.
Mayweather will lose because he is untested against top welterweights.

Why does everyone keep bring up Mosley as a fighter for Floyd to fight? Mosley wouldn’t give Floyd a chance in He!! when he was up and coming. So why give him a chance at a huge payday? if anyone i would say he should fight Paul Williams, but Paul has a blemish on his record also. if you saw that fight it wasn’t paul wasn’t ready for that fight….

Didn’t they both fight almost all the same fighters except maybe Cotto? Difference I look at is how easy Manny went through those very same opponents which reflects his fun to watch style of boxing.
I think you can make a case for maybe in the past Mayweather not taking a tougher fight but I do not think you say Floyd is overrated. Boring, YES, but anyone can see watching him he’s got speed, power, and tons of skill. Boring = yes, overrated = I don’t think so.
I think Mayweather can neutralize Manny like Marquez did with pure boxing skills. Hatton is a brawler, Cotto likes to brawl and got caught doing so with a 4th rd knockdown, Oscar looked like he just stepped out of bed.
Floyd doesn’t care about the credit Manny is getting. I think this adds fuel to his purpose.

I think Mayweather is overrated since he has been talking about all his skills while he hasnt proven a lot of things against so many people other than hiss 40-0 record. I mean, Mosley, one of the top fighters in his division, has already commented on him (Just search in fight hype website). Is he good? Hell yes. But to say he is better than Pacman, Mosley and Cotto, he has to show the world that he was able to do it unless… one of them cannot make a fight (e.g due to retirement, injuries, fighting against other TOP BOXERs).
This is why many people hated PBF, I mean he’s been bragging saying he’s a good fighter but in the end… a lot of question marks are still in there because he hasnt fought enough at least within his own decision.
Lastly, I hate it when he tried to discredit Pacman. MP has brought a lot of good things to the sport (at least after PBF left and during the economic recession). pacman needs to be respected.
Its a clash between the best in offence vs the best in defence, a good boy against a bad boy. Just like Magic Johnson and the LAKERS vs Larry Bird and the CELTICS. I like the LAKERS and MANNY PACQUIAO
Common guys, everytime Manny win’s you always find’s excuses on the opponent lost like washed up ODLH or beated up Cotoot or Dismantled Hatton, ODLH did go up to 12 rounds with Mayweather and did almost Dethroned Mayweather and when he fought Manny he only lasted 8th rounds, Hatton wnent up to 11th round with Mayweather and lasted 2 rounds with Manny and was he dismantled when he fought Manny? What i’m trying to say is there is always something wrong with manny’s opponent regardless if they win or loose. What’s UP????????????????

Most of the comments on this article and every other article concerning Pacquiao or Mayweather only reinforce why those two fighters need to battle. Once the winner of the fight has emerged, then let the fanboys (of either) mouth off.
The immaturity of people is mind boggling!
In order to be the best, you have to beat the best. Manny will fight the fight the fans want to see. We can’t say the same about Floyd. Both fighters are accomplished fighters. Floyd just hasn’t accomplished much as a welterweight. He won’t fight the welterweights the fans want to see him fight. Manny has already fought 2 welterweights. One former and one current top tier welterweight. And is in negotiations to fight the SUPPOSED welterweight at the top of the tier. (I personally believe Moseley is at the top of the tier.) Right now Manny is the people’s champion. Floyd just hasn’t showcased his talents against the best welterweights. I think Mosely deserves the winner of this fight and Williams deserves the winner of that fight so we can really say who the best of the best is. I would love to see a welterweight tournament because it is the most disputed division in the sport right now.
Mayweather has a 3″ heaight advantage, a 3″ reach advantage, superior speed, superior defense, superior ring intelligence. NO WAY can Pacquiao beat Mayweather. NO WAY POSSIBLE!

I don’t know why you guys can’t understand the point on this article. I simple and very clear that Mayweather is overrated because he never fought tough fighter. Mayweater shoud fight Williams. That’s going to be a test if he’s really overrated. BUt Pacquiao already proved it so many times that he’s great or greatest fighter in his era. I think Mayweather has not proven it yet. PERIOD

The bottom line is this, when Sugar Ray Leonard was asked if he could beat Floyd, he said he would be one of very few all time fighters that would be capable of doing it, but acknowledged it would be an extremely tough test, if not one of his toughest tests, this is from a man who shared a ring with Hearns, Duran, Benitez and Hagler and acknowledged the greatness of Mayweather – even stating he would have held his own in any era.
Whose opinion do you value and give credit too more? Sugar Ray Leonard or Jorge Lugo ?

Everybody knows Pbf is overrated, cuz of who he fights, but like the article says, he is good. Regardless if like him or not, Pac is fun 2 watch cuz he tries to KO the guy from the gate, but if this fight does happen it will be one sided and boring, just like every other Pbf fight, it is just the way it is, i am not a Pbf or Pac fan but it will be like every other fight he’s been in. You wanna see a good fight? let Pac fight Mosley, JMM, or Margarito people that will actually want to fight.

Jorge Lugo you just said that oscar was past his prime when he fought mayweather but wen they asked you 5 great fighters that manny fought you mentioned oscar. thats a contradiction manny fought oscar 2 years older and at a weight oscar hadn’t fought at in 9 years. he fought maquez instead of clottey cotto and mosely because his comeback was too fight pacquiou. if he beats marquez who gave manny trouble then he would be able to ask for more money against manny. He fought castillo who was in his prime. many people thought castillo won the fight but mayweather gave him a rematch, when any fighter that was scared wouldnt. he fought oscar for his belt jr. middleweight belt at a weight he never fought before and was outweighed by oscar by 12 pounds. honestly you have no boxing knowledge and you are a delusional pacquiou fan
Definately agree with lugo Floyd is overated he is a good fighter that could have been the best. People have been saying this stuff about him for years hand picking opponents, all I can say is when the history books are written and he has more critics than supporters he will be remembered as a defensive genious that he had balls the size of peanuts and would rarely fight who the people wanted him to fight.

Is Mayweather overrated? It is both a “yes” and a “no”.
As a boxer Mayweather is not overrated. He is really good. He has the natural skills of a boxer. And one of the best we ever witnessed. But are his skills really tested? No. Can he perform when faced with an equally skilled opponent? We don’t know.
As a fighter, yes, Mayweather is very very much overrated. A fighter fights, inspite of the fear of losing, because he wants to conquer and be the best. Mayweather’s strength in mind, heart and will were not really tested. His tolerance in pain has never been tested, either. He may argue that he is too good for anybody to measure him in this category. Well, all he has to do is fight the best. Why choose Marquez instead of Cotto or Mosley. Don’t tell me that Marquez pose a greater challenge. I can’t even imagine Cotto or Mosley fighting Marquez.
Could Mayweather be a good fighter? He is too scared to even know himself. He has to conquer his fear of losing first. And I don’t want to hear that he doesn’t have that fear because he is too good and knows that he will always win. That’s just pure very bs. And that’s just a very very typical “Floyd Mayweather”. To be a fighter one has to conquer ones self first before conquering somebody. In Floyd Mayweather’s case, he has to conquer his fear of losing.
Since Mayweather’s pain tolerance wasn’t tested. Will he flinch when he feels the sting of pacquiao’s punches? I think it’s both a “yes” and a “no”, also. Okay dude you seem to be missing something. Even though mayweather hasn’t fought the “best” of his division. He has done something no other fighter today can do. And thats out box EVERY opponent. He makes his opponents miss. And even when they seem like they are in the fight because they are being overly agressive ( Delahoya ) The numbers will show that they were just throwing, not landing. Mayweather has the highest plus ratio in boxing. That is the difference between his punch percentage vs his opponents. It’s something crazy like +23%. If you are saying an average boxer can do that, you are crazy. No matter who you fight, it takes an extreme amount of skill to outbox someone in that fashion.

Mayweather is a defensive fighter, while Pacquiao is an aggresive one. FM is faster because it takes quicker reflexes to block simultaneous punches the way Mayweather does, therefore more speed. Mayweather is a strong fighter too, but I think Pacquiao will win through decision.
I would love to see Marquez vs Pacquiao III, although Pacquiao seems stronger, Marquez is a wise fighter; he knows Pacquiao’s moves, speed and power.
And by the way, Jorge and Arshaid are writers, then why in the world they write with abbreviation all the time?!! This guys are supposed to set the example of how writing is to be writen.

The last recognizable boxer that had the same swagger as Mayweather was the great Ali.. Although he talked up a storm, he always managed to back it up. That is what makes this man a legend of the sport. One of these men that we are talking about excercises his freedom of speech (maybe a little too much sometimes) the way Ali did during his reign but not always back it up, in the sense that he fought lesser opponents. The other one shows undeniable greatness even when faced with adversity (stronger, bigger opponents) the way Ali did fighting Liston, Foreman and the likes..
There’s no denying that the biggest fight in boxing today can only come from Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in the same ring going at it like true warriors the way it was done back in the day when the best was fighting the best.. so here we go, floyd mayweather jnr. is not overrated and will probably go down as the best of his generation and one of the greatest of all time (with pacman). I give floyd the edge because of his size, defensive ability, reflexes and counter punching ability. One thing that must be noted about Mayweathers list of opponents – people only started saying they were shot after he beat them – Hatton, De la Hoya, Judah, Castillo etc etc. Prior to each fight they were all considered worthy opponents and the boxing fraternity was as split as it was before Pacquiao Cotto. Its a cheap point to make with the benefit of hindsight – that wasn’t the way it was looked at at the time and anyone with half a brain knows that which is why your articles get slated.

Mayweather is overated as it stands at this time. Hes not overated for his obvious talent and abilty but overated as hes still not used these talents against a real opponent who has a real chance of beating him. The most frustrating thing about Mayweather is you know he possibly could be a true all time great and the stage is set with the likes of Mosley, Williams and Pacman but he still continues to avoid them and make silly excuses about money and blar blarr blarrr. Its in Mayweathers hands and he has a short timeline at 32 so hopefully he can step up to the plate and cement a place in history instead of going down as a fraud and cherry picker.
