Maybe Pacquiao has finally proven what real boxing fans knew all along

pac552By Eughine Dunnion: With the manner in which Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO’s) went about the job of beating tough as teak Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO) in a 12th round TKO last Saturday night, maybe now, at long last Pacman will get the credit he deserves. As a boxing fan of 22 years, it astounds me that boxers of the calibre of Manny never seem to get the credit they deserve until late on in their career.

The thing with going up so many weights is that you will, rightly, have most people predicting that you will not carry the power up from the lighter divisions and that stepping up to fight an opponent at his natural weight will be your undoing. Now while that is quite a sensible thing to say and something proven in boxing many times, you will sometimes have fighters such as Pacquiao that prove this theory wrong. With an unquenchable appetite for training and conditioning, the never say die attitude brought about from his days as a street urchin, the relentless rise of Pacman under the watchful eye of wily trainer Freddie Roach has been on fast forward the last few years. With great wins over Erik Morales (twice), Marco Antonio Barrera (twice), Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and his latest performance against Cotto, maybe now Pacquiao will put these doubters to bed. The only question is will he be able to do the same to Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO’s). This is the fight the fans want to see and whatever the outcome I think boxing fans need to realize that we are witnessing two absolute greats of the fight game and whoever loses still has a lot left to offer in the sport.

My point with this, my first article, is to bring some sense to the arguments and discussions I see on so many boxing websites today. Fighter loyalty seems to bring about the most idiotic of articles and I think that if you are going to write for a website, magazine, blog etc then you at least need to exercise some logical thinking and not let personal feelings towards a boxer cloud your judgment. I say this because I think that we have some great fighters in the sport today and while I also have my favorites (Shane Mosley), I at least acknowledge when he is soundly beaten, like against Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright and hold no grudge against said fighter. I think that, especially in a sport so dominated by money and dogged by the problems of the last year or so, The Margarito hand wrap incident, the untimely deaths of Arturo Gatti, Vernon forrest and Alexis Arguello that when we get to witness fighters of the calibre of Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto that we all need to realise that these guys are athletes who have trained hard most of their lives to get where they are and deserve our respect, regardless of our personal feelings towards them.

So who will be next for Pacman? My feeling is that the money to be made from a pound for pound king showdown with “Money” Mayweather will be too enticing for both camps and they will both eventually settle on a 50-50 split and we can finally get the match we all want to see. Just don’t ask me my predictions yet, If this fight goes ahead I will submit a full article on how I think this super fight will go down, till then, enjoy the new year.

  • jhon foreman says:

I don’t hate Pacquiao or Roach but I don’t considered him as a great boxer, because every time he fight, always all in favor on he’s side with the approval of the people behind the close curtain.

  • jhon foreman says:

In Roach statement that Cotto have problem of losing weight. First Cotto was defeated by Margarito who has a bricks in his globe, then he fall in Roach trick. Miguel Cotto accepted a catch weight of 145lbs in favor of Pacquio because he want to prove to the boxing world that he could win the fight to a person who gain weight and power, while he is losing and draining, that’s lead him to his most painful defeat in his entire career, But even with his condition Cotto give Pacquiao a good beating, that’s indication that, in his real natural weight Pacquiao will suffer the most worse defeat in his entire career. When Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard fought theirs no catch weight.

  • jhon foreman says:

Welterweight limit are 147lbs and up, now Pacquiao win one of the belt in welterweight in 145lbs catch weight, should the commission will change the weight of welterweight just to accommodate the goose that lay the golden egg in favor of Roach and Pacquiao.

  • jhon foreman says:

After winning the belt to Diaz Pacquiao became a mega buck to the media, magazine and etc…. Oscar DeLa Hoya see all of this opportunity, so Dela Hoya made the most interesting match in his carier to challenge Pacquiao that will make a megabuck, but certainly on Pacquiao advantage, and the next is Hatton in Pacquiao advantage also to be sure, the goose that lay a golden egg will keep on producing a golden egg. The last of this victim is Cotto as we all observe. Do you believe that a man who could knock a big guy, could not even shake a small guy even an inch and in the nine round doesn’t know were he is. All of this certainly will not happened without the help of the big guy who really play an important role on this game.

  • jhon foreman says:

I don’t believe Superman or Vampire exist, one thing I do believe, things happened and things that you saw and things that was done behind a close door. There’s so many comment but has no courage to investigate what’s behind to all of it. In my observation and base on the data and collection of medical findings, that when you lose weight in a short period of time, the person is weak and no stamina. In Pacquiao case every time he fight, he out-weight he’s opponent, he experience it himself when he was drained, he lose to a Thailander by way of quiting long time ago I see that fight myself in 1995, I was in the Philippines that time

  • dean says:

  • Daveyboy says:

Good professional article – this website is improving the last few days without the domination of Perez, Gilfoid and Santiago – keep them coming sir…..

  • Dewi Powell says:

Your point about fighter loyalty is unbelievably true.

  • Cheers to Miguel Cotto says:

the Pac-Man should invite Miguel Cotto to his General Santos estate for his next birthday bash.

Cotto is a courageous fighter and gracious in defeat. He deserves the respect and admiration of all Filipinos.

  • UkanSodOff says:

Well ive had questions about his recent successes but i think im done with all that. Saturday night left me with nothing to think otherwise.

The only thing that keeps going through my head is how hes guna do against more slippery characters than Cotto and Hatton thats where Mayweather or Mosley comes into it.

But Pacquiao is just absolutly legendary.

  • Juan Garcia says:

PBF is my favorite and he will win. Wanna know how?? Like they did to Judah..Roger Mayweather and team will comeup into the ring and Low Blow pacquiao

  • expert says:

maybe we will all vanish in this world we will never see a boxer lke pacman. he is truly the best boxer that ever live beating all greats like ali ,marciano and all others they say great

  • What mayweather did about boxing?

    not being beaten?

Come-on you cant be beaten by one step forward with a job and back 4 steps because of fear of getting hit.

  • expert says:

there’s no way for mayweather to beat pacman, pacman is much more faster and stronger than him

  • Jimmy says:

Both are tremendous fighters. They are the true meaning of boxing. It’s nice to see fighters who study their craft so well. May the best man win. I might lean towards Manny.

  • Jeff says:

Pacquiao has proven himself time and again and surely put to rest any doubts with his win to Cotto…..nahhh. There will always be Pacquiao haters who choose to ignore the facts. Mayweather may very well win or he may not but one thing is a guarantee, this will be an epic fight and both will fight to the end. Pacquiao by unanimous decision.

  • joke only says:

    mayweather will sleep vs pacmonsta

  • Leibstandarte AH says:

mayweather will be knock out like cold chicken…..

  • Edgar Cintron says:

    Once again it’s on…

  • kulangot says:

When I looked at PBF match against Marquez, I am convinced that he is too quick and can’t lose to anybody. When I reviewed Pac match against Cotto-I said to myself that PAC is super quick, no one can beat him with the way he is now.
To answer who is the best between the two is to let them fight —The BATTLE of the BEST— and let it happen.. NOW!!!

  • Pacquiaoism says:

I doubt Mayweather can dominate pacquiao. All he can do is the quick jab and run. His defense won’t work that well against a straight punch.

Roach will point out him using big gloves too. If he wears bigger gloves, he’ll have a better defense but how can he knockout Pac with those?

  • Pacquiaoism says:

If this fight will go for the WBO belt, then there’s no way Mayweather can win by points if he is the challenger. He should knockout or dominate pacquiao, not by points, But by traditional boxing with a heart. HARD HITS!!!

  • unknown says:

Mayweather can win by points against Pacquiao… but Pacquiao can knock Mayweather down… it’s hard to tell if who’s going to win…

As a master cyclist, Mayweather will give Pacquiao a hard time in catching him, in the ring, for sure. Pacquiao has to control himself from getting frustrated or he will loss the fight.

  • pugilist says:

totally agree myk! i just watched judah vs mayweather, judah was hurting mayweather!

  • Myk says:

i just watched mayweather’s fights and omg manny will catch and beat him up. mayweather is predictable and counters after being flurried. but no one can stand toe to toe with manny after seeing him take cotto’s punches. mayweather is only half of cotto’s strength. i predict a 3 or 4 round knockout of mayweather. manny can catch mayweather and after that a rain of pain will come.

  • danny says:

manny will ktfo li’l floyd. remember that…….

  • Muta Ihn says:

Fair and honest. Kudos to you, Mr. Dunnion.

  • Dom says:

Manny is amazing but I’m convinced Mayweather will beat him on Pts.
