Khan would struggle with Marquez: Risk not worth reward

khan56279By Dennis Broadhurst: After hearing that Amir Khan wanted to fight Juan Manuel Marquez it made me think. I know that Amir is a very good fighter, he has very quick hands, ok power and good general movement also with the great trainer Freddy Roach in his corner he can be built into a force to be reckoned with. In a fight against Marquez, Khan would sure have the advantage in youth, size and speed but Marquez would have advantages in power, experience, ring intelligence and chin.

In making a fight with Marquez, Khan would be looking to fight an old, past it, possibly fallen warrior in Marquez who he would see as an easier fight than Timothy Bradley, Devon Alexander and possibly even Ricky Hatton but I truly believe that Khan would be in for a shock if he got into the ring with Marquez.

Khan is a good fighter with serious potential but I believe that if he went into a fight with Marquez, too eager to impress as always then he would make some mistakes and the old warhorse would capitalize on them. These mistakes are for example throwing six punch combination’s and leaving himself open for counter punches from a counter punching master.

Another could be Khan burning himself out by trying too hard to impress and then Marquez going on the offense with his powerful punches. The reason I think Khan would be very eager to impress is that I think that he would believe that beating Marquez more convincingly than Pacquaio would escalate him to the world stage.

Marquez will be looked at as a stepping stone for Khan but he has very good power, being able to wobble Pacquaio and knock out 37 men in 50 wins and I think his power and speed would be at a good balance at 140lbs. He lasted well for two fights with Pacquiao and even held him to a draw, he has an iron chin and has tasted punchers power a lot more than Khan has.

I believe that Marquez would be able to walk through Khan’s shots, being able to land his own to keep the fight tight. This would make Khan fight hard and he would being to tire more than has been shown and then his movement would slow a little and all his speed would be worthless, then Marquez would go in for the kill.

I hope I am wrong because I like Khan, as a fellow Brit I hope he goes places in boxing but I see Marquez being able to beat him or if Khan beats Marquez by outboxing him he will be criticized for beating a washed-up, old fighter. The risk outweighs the reward, it is lose lose for Khan. Don’t make the fight.

Marquez should be able to beat Hatton at 140 but Khan would be close because of his speed and footwork

JJM is one of the great modern fighters. He has every punch in the book, power, a solid chin and unrivaled ring intelligence, a true mexican warrior. I’ve always been a huge fan of his, if any young boxer out there needs a role model, JJM is the man.
He has nothing left to prove in my opinion, I would like to see him take Valero’s WBC belt.
Juan Manuel Marquez WBA,WBO,WBC, undisputed lightweightchamp of the world has a nice ring to it, and would cap a magnificent career.

As for Valero v JMM i’d pick JMM in that one as Valero is ferocious and relentless but i think that would be his downfall in a fight with JMM as JMM is probably the best counter puncher in boxing and Valero leaves himself wide open when unloading with those heavy but wild hooks!

  • Dennis Broadhurst says:

Readers, by saying Marquez is washed up
I mean that is what the people would say if Khan beat him. Can you not see from the rest of my article that I think he is dangerous?

  • Ancient_Silence says:

phew Tres i agree with your observations about Marquez, he also holds a special place in my heart but as far as Valero getting beat by JMM well i just cannot agree with that. I think that would be a tough one.Valero aint no joke.

  • nepe says:

well said tres. marquez still one of the top fighters on 140 hes a sart fighter and way more experienced than kahn. i hope he gets a fight woth kahn or hatton time for him to get a win.

  • Tres says:

JMM washed up? Man JMM might be a bit on the old side but he is still one of the best fighters in boxing. Intelligent, strong puncher, with a great chin, counter boxing genius, and just to much for any boxer at 140, and he has only ever looked bad against PBF, and PBF never even tried to make weight for thier fight and still went 12 rounds with the guy! Amir, Ricky, Diaz, Valero anybody would get beat by JMM, at 140. And u can bank on that.

to calzaghe 1 , about that loss to prescott, i think people are freaking out a tad on amir s chin, i recon that punch wud have knock out most boxers. prob wud have knocked out a horse even, lol

  • calzaghe#1 says:

khan is a gr8 fighter but he has been exploited once before and that was by prescott in 54 seconds!!
so what is a veteran like JMM gonna do to amir “chin” khan!!

  • stephen a says:

and on the point about khan s chin i have this to say; every fighter has a weakness, just ask master freddie roach, he has found and exploited weaknesses on some of the best in the buisness, and on khan; what he lacks in having a suspect chinn he more than makes up for it in quick feet quick hands and good agility, and an all round good boxer

  • scotty says:

Khan would have a good chance against the smaller man. Marquez struggled to overcome Diaz at lightweight and he is looking older and slower with each fight. I’d like to JMM fight Valero myself.

  • stephen a says:

clean slate from here on, no problem dennis

  • Dennis Broadhurst says:

Stephen a, sorry for some of my past articles, they were very poor start a fresh on me from here please.

  • stephen a says:

i thought id never say this dennis but ,fair article, though i wudnt go as far to say khan would struggle agianst in my book a washed up fighter in marquez, i think khan wud beat him but it wudnt be easy

  • nick says:

just a matter of time before khan gets KO’d again he should move to America and dissapear

  • Mr Rich says:

Wow, a writer telling a fighter to duck another fighter because he might get beat…. sounds stupid to me. Boxers should test themselves, let Khan do that. Personally i think Khan could do quite well against a 36 year old, bloated Marquez. Make no mistake though, if he were to fight a prime Marquez people would be picking bits of Khan off the canvas with a sponge.

  • Lee shep says:

I agree Marquez would destoy kahn

  • JD says:

If the same JMM who fought Diaz shows up it could be a very difficult fight for Khan, with a very good chance of him losing.
