Hatton contemplating a comeback – Boxing News

hat54647By William Mackay: Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) is considering a come back, saying “Who knows? Next year after Christmas and New Year, and after the holiday I’ve got booked for January, I might think about what I’m doing…seeing Matthew [Hatton] and all the lads I’m promoting be successful has given me that itch back.” That’s good to know that Hatton might be staging a boxing comeback some time next year, although I would have liked to hear a little more of an urgency in his comments than what he said.

Hatton still seems a little bit on the fence about it and not truly as motivated as some of us would like to see from him. Hatton, 31, was viciously knocked out in the 2nd round on May 2nd by Manny Pacquiao. Hatton was knocked down three times in the bout, twice in the 1st round and a final time in the 2nd. The third knock down left Hatton out cold for over three minutes.

One could understand Hatton’s reluctance to want to get back in the ring after a knock out like that, but it’s somewhat disappointing to see Hatton’s lack of desire about the sport. Before the knock out loss to Pacquiao, Hatton was considered to be one of the top fighters in the light welterweight division, and that’s why it seems so strange that he doesn’t want to get back in the ring instead of wasting his career sitting on the sidelines promoting other fighters.

Hatton would seem to have at least two, possibly three good years left in his prime if he’s put in with the right kind of opponent. I wouldn’t want to see Hatton back in there with fast fighters like Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao, because they clearly have his number. But I think Hatton would do well against Juan Manuel Marquez, Edwin Valero, and Amir Khan. Those opponents seem tailor made to Hatton’s brawling style of fighting. Hatton would do well financially against Marquez and Khan. The Valero fight would be less popular because he’s not as well known.

Hatton has been very reluctant up until now to get back in the ring against other top fighters, even though it would mean big money if he were to come back. Hatton isn’t exactly in need of spending cash after making a bundle in fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao. However, by staying out of the ring Hatton is making it more difficult for himself when he does finally decide to stage a comeback.

hatton should retire he is to weak at 140 ask this question could he survive a fight against maidana or could he even catch up to kwan to land a blow and this two fighters are not even the best at 140. hatton does not have the skills to fight at 147 his best weight at this time.

  • Aaron says:

Well i think he should call it a day for his health, i love him and think he’s great. All you guys calling him should stop.

He was great you can’t say he wasn’t. Where was
Pac man and Maywheather when he was dominating the division for four years.

Most of the fighters who ever entered a boxing ring were limited. With the exception of a few, Maywheather is one of them, he’s up there with Ali
these are guys who can adapt. There not restricted by a style, i think styles are founded in pride. Look at froch, i liked him before his last fight, but he obviously dosn’t understand what it means to box, when he was saying, the guy wouldn’t stand and fight. I wouldn’t neither and neither would have any of the greats.

Hatton should call it a day.

As for who will win from Cotto Vs Manny i think the smart money is on Manny and Manny Vs Maywheather well thats an interesting one.

I think he should pack it in. Not too many brawlers go that far. I wonder if the Pac fight would have changed a little had he selected a more appropriate trainer? What a mistake!

  • EDL says:

the hatton haters on this blog are gimps. Listen whatever we say Ricky will make his own decision. There is a lot of people that would give there right arm to acheive what ricky has achieved. 2 loss to the two best fighters of an era is no shame. The second one though does pose a question over hattons abilty to continue fighting with those hands down. He needs a defence if he is to carry on.

  • sausages patterson says:

Sausages is disagreeing strongly with leftjab’s comment that he was ‘a joke’!!

  • leftjab says:

before and after the fight with pacquiao,he was a joke!!!he got his recognition because of his huge fan base from england that rakes in alot of money for his promoter..please ricky, enjoy life and keep drinking beer!!!

  • sausages patterson says:

Hatton I’m a big fan, but get back in shape. Whilst out of training camp go to your new gym 4 days a week and mork out, then you’ll not have so much to lose. Fight diaz then marquez or bradley then maybe a floyd rematch and retire! Go on Ricky, you can do it!!!!

  • Dave Stevens says:

    Look

Hatton has been a great champoin and ducked out on nobody which is a proud thing to say these days in boxing. There have been so many boxers who have ducked out fighting certain people to keep their career going a little long than it should. At least Hatton took anyone on with no hesitation. Like J said earlier Hatton has lost 2 out of 47 fights and some people are saying he is useless. Get a life to those people. I hope he comes back for a few years just to shut up the critics. I dont expect him to deat Pacman or Mayweather but the facts are he is number 3 in the world to them and there is no shame in that!!

  • THE PROFESSOR says:

Fight Zab Judah, Ricky for a come back fight and then JMM.

  • limited boxing says:

should at that time the result of manny vs hatton is hatton knock out manny ?????????????? hatton not overated, excel boxing skill?? we people corner him at the time he lost??? for hatton – i think hatton should prove it if he think he was so fit there is no way manny defeat him as he had said. prove it hatton i am glad you do it, viva for hatton if this happen, forget about floyd or hatton’s best night with tzyu – he was 35

  • don@london says:

Well said hasbeen, i am a brit and thats my view also! Guys get off his back he has given us loads of memorable nights and only fell short at the elite level, and so what if he likes a few beers, im sure most of you do too, i know i do!!!

  • hasbeen says:

RH has had a good run in boxing , He became light welterweight champion of the world, and he made a lot of money to boot. To be honest with you I think that Hatton won the battle but lost the war when he fought KT. That was the best that he has ever looked in the ring to me. If you will be honest with yourself he hasn’t looked the same since that night. Hatton fought his heart out that night and walked through some heavy leather. His ability to take a punch just isn’t what it once was. You Brits should love him, he gave you all he had.

  • J says:

I think people overlook the fact that Hatton’s ONLY 2 losses were to fighters considered P4P best at the time, there’s no shame in that. I hate hearing people say “Hatton’s lost 2 of his last 4″ why not say “Hatton’s lost 2 out of 47!” I hope to see him back in the ring. Imagine he reunites with Billy Graham and goes on a tear of the 140lb division!

  • David says:

    Hatton seriously needs to retire.
Pacaquiao, hit him with such a explosive, lightning fast punch, and destroyed Hatton!!
**** His ability for a come-back is impossible!!!
    ****brought un-told shame!!
**** Pacaquiao had shown his dominace, with a dislay of his speed and power, as he completely destroyed Hatton.

  • norbert says:

zab judah would be a good apponent for now, they are both pretty battered up!

  • Steve M says:

Big Hatton fan but he must be 180-190 lbs now this is not the regime of a pro athlete and is part of the reason he has deteriorated so badly over the past 2 years , he was good enough to beat all but the very best ,To get back to 140 now would be draining and despite his claims that it does not affect him I would bet there is no serious conditining pro who would back that up. Call it a day Ricky it can only end up badly,

  • Justin says:

He needs Teddy Atlas to train him!!!!!!!!!!!

  • kam says:

Are you mad this guy hatton is finished whats the point of fighting marquez who is a fat oldman theres no significance hatton will always fall short of the elite cos hes a limited fighter. when Pacaquio destroyed him hes eyes were in orbit next time he could end up in INTENSIVE CARE. Your knowledge is weak if you think hatton has got 2 years of prime fighting left, he s abused hes body too much cos of an alcohol fuelled lifestyle which has taken so much out of him as a fighter. I mean look at him right now he he doesnt need a fat suit he actually is RICKY FATTON.

  • .:boxer says:

LOL true Hatton is unfixiable he has bad habbits

  • stephen a says:

i dont agree with u RJ. i rekon there is a whole multitude of fighters hatton could face. namingly bradley, marquez, miadana, ortiz, though i think khan would be 2 quick for him.

  • RJ says:

No amount of training can fix Ricky Hatton. IF he decides to come back, he should just fight someone like him, a brawler with no defense or technique. That’s the only kind of fighter he should target from now on. Maybe like that he can leave his ultra-loyal fans with the illusion of a good career.

  • 123 says:

ricky fatton actually looks like is fat costume now. he wants to get a 3rd ko loss.

  • Martin says:

Time away doesn’t help, but more important factors are his desire and the trainer he employs if he returns.

With Hatton he will always have a lot of conditioning work to do when he returns to training, but he can and will do this effectively if he has the desire.

It takes a lot to come back from a defeat like the one he suffered to Pacquiao particularly when you have been a multi-weight World champion with plenty of money in the bank, a potentially successful career ahead of him as a promoter and close family members telling him he has nothing more to prove in the ring.

If he comes back, I’d like to see him fight Marquez with Freddie Roach or Robert McCracken as his trainer.
