Funeka-Guzman: Was Ali Ripped Off Again?
By Peter Wells: Last night, Joan Guzman and Ali Funeka fought to a majority draw, it was for the vacant International Boxing Federation Lightweight title. The scores were 114-114 twice while one judge gave it to Funeka 116-112. It was a close fight and we all would like to know who won. So here is what happened in their fight round by round:
10-9 Guzman
Round 2- A better round for Funeka, Guzman struggled to get inside the long reach of Ali, but was still sneaking through and landing over double the amount of punches landed by Funeka.
10-9 Guzman
Round 3- Guzman attacks early, and sprawls low to avoid the swinging left of Funeka, Ali started to look more lively but Guzman’s head bobbing was becoming a problem as showed once again on the punch count, with Guzman landing over triple the amount of power punches.
10-9 Guzman
Round 4- Early on Funeka went down but was ruled a slip, and then Guzman started to pile on some pressure. Guzman started to get caught with big shots, and Funeka was looking much better, but Joan was still getting inside making it an exciting fight and very hard to call.
10-9 Funeka
Round 5- Guzman was being treated to a nasty cut over his right eye, but was more closer to his nose so wasn’t affecting his vision as much. The cut was caused by a nasty clash of heads in round 4. Once again an extremely exciting round, both fighters going in and landing hard shots, Funeka was looking the better landing some hard right hands.
10-9 Funeka
Round 6- Guzman wasn’t getting in as easily now and was having to trade from the outside were he was losing dramatically.
10-9 Funeka
Round 7- Funeka started by keeping on the outside but Guzman was soon able to sneak on the inside and was very affective and both fighters traded blow for blow. Joan was looking better with his head movement and was blocking a lot of Ali’s punches.
10-9 Guzman
Round 8- Guzman struggled a bit to get inside in round eight and there was plenty of holding on. Guzman couldn’t find a way through the high guard of Funeka. Funeka landed solid shots very late on and momentarily stunned Joan, Guzman backed off and took some more hard and affective shots.
10-9 Funeka
Round 9- Guzman was starting to take a beating and his face was looking quite a mess. Guzman was being beaten to combinations and Funeka was charging forward. Joan had to keep his guard high as Ali rarely went downstairs.
10-9 Funeka
Round 10- Funeka started to pour on more pressure coming in with big one-twos, and Guzman had no answer it was looking like it could be stopped any time soon.
10-9 Funeka
Round 11- Funeka had Guzman on the ropes early; Joan tried showboating but got caught doing it. Guzman looked better landing more on the inside and looked livelier but was still being caught a number of times.
10-9 Funeka
Round 12- Guzman ended good kept moving on the inside, but kept getting caught. It made for a great end to a great fight, but maybe the verdict ruined it.
10-9 Guzman
Final Result- 115-113 Funeka
Guzman was very lucky to get off with a draw, and once again Ali will feel hard done by. Funeka is defiantly a future world champion he just needs to get the right judges. Guzman’s chance will come just not against a guy like Funeka.

GOLDEN BOY, PLEASE STOP PAYING JUDGES WHENEVER YOUR FIGHTER LOSES. THIS IS BAD FOR BOXING, WHEN GOLDEN BOY PROMOTION HAS LINED THE JUDGES POCKETS FOR THEIR FIGHTERS. I THOUGHT THEY LEARNED FROM THE DIAZ-MALIGNAGGI FIGHT, I GUESS NOT.
Terrible decision. Funeka won that fight hands down.
The fight was never close, Funeka Won the title belt and that’s that. Gave Funeka his title belt, He won fair and square. Guzman is a good fighter but he got beat hands down.
Bad Judging from these Judges are very bad to the fighter and the sport of boxing.
Funeka won the fight fair and square, enough said. Funeka beat Guzman hands down. Funeka is the winner in my book and in all the boxing fans eyes. Funeka (Won) 116-112 and the two judges who called it 114-114 was watching another fight.
WHAT A ROBBERY!! I have watched it 3 times now without the volume turned up and have Funeka winning easy!!!
How are judges selected? do they have to receive any training to judge a fight? There a peoples lives at stake in the ring and the judging should be taking seriously. Funeka won fair and square and was robbed if front of millions of fans. Another black eye for boxing, makes me sick!
one of the worst decisions ever!!!!!
It wasn’t even close Funeka won hands down.
Funeka destroyed Guzman, even when Funeka did stupid things like cover up on the ropes, Guzman couldn’t find enough power/speed/determination to do any damage. Guzman was beaten, nothing he did worked, he even got nailed while doing some lame showboating at the end. The decision was absurd, giving Guzman a draw is like giving Cotto a draw against Pacquiao had he made it thru 12. Horrible decision!!
what can you do..guzman is golden boy fighter. tsktsk..so sad!
Great heart and willingness to exchange from Guzman, never saw that coming cause of his hit n run boxing style. Funeka deserved the decision. It was an exciting fight though. I smell rematch.
One of the biggest robbery in boxing after Oscar de la Hoya /Felix Sturm . That fight was ridiculous. Ali – head up , you are a good fighter who deserved to win .
I thought that Funeka beat both Campbell and Guzman. Poor kid can’t get a decision… So it’s time for him to go for the KO in every fight! Unless you have a big name, you must take the fight out of the hands of these terrible boxing & mma judges.
worst decision since valueve/holyfield.
guzman was a beaten man.
Ali funeka won.
Why did it take so long for the judges to score the fight? When you throw over 400 more punches and land 80+ more of your punches than your opponent baring a knockdown (which there was not)the person who throws more punches and lands more punches usually wins however for some reason the outcome was a draw…completely ridiculous!!!
I belive he was ripped off, is it possible that he was ripped off simply becoz of his height?
I thought it was a real good fight, never saw either of them before, didn’t care who won, I just wanted to watch the fights. six foot one inch is pretty tall. It has to be hard to find other lightweights that are that tall. Most wealter weights are not that tall. I think he did
a great job though, and yes, he was ripped off. I only started watching boxing a few years ago, and I have seen alot of situations where the judges short changed people. Luis Castillo beat Mayweather, Paulie beat Juan and a few others that I just can’t think of. Mayweather is not really 40-0, he’s actually 39-1 soon to be actually 39-2
well im sure it was a draw, but im sure people will call joan names like joanie or joan gooserun but let me tell u sumthin he been inactive 4 a year & joan is like 5′6 & ali is freakin 6′1, & let me tell u sumthin watch guzman will become champion, will just see if you’ll still call him any bad names
I had it 116 – 112 for Funeka, and most fans would agree that Funeka was robbed.
