Cotto vs. Pacquiao: The Aftermath

By Ibrar Arshaid: Now I’m not going to over the fight and write about the events that took place because I am sure that you all witnessed the outcome as almost every true boxing fan watched the great fight. So what we have learnt is that Manny is unbelievably good and more evident he has power out of this world. As for Cotto I’m not going to say a bad word, because he simply was and is not good enough and come up way too short.
It’s time for me to get something of my chest. This is only my fourth article I have written, my first article was called ‘Cotto vs Pacquiao: why Miguel Cotto is not the same fighter and why he Will lose’ and I remember the amount of negative feedback I got and the amount of people who ridiculed me. I really urge people to read that article because everything I predicted happened. I stated that Pacman would be the harder puncher and commentators laughed that of and I was right. I said the difference between the two fighters on the night will be Freddie Roach and I was right. I said that for Bob Arum to make this fight he must have known that Cotto is a shot fighter and I was right because it would be too much of a risk for Bob to put his two best fighters together as this could highly damage Pacquiao’s fight with Mayweather and I was right. We also know now that Cotto before this fight has reiterated his desire to leave top rank. Clever promoting by Arum he knew Cotto is leaving and he matched him with Pacman because he believed Cotto is not the same fighter and he has now milked Cotto to his full pay per view potential. I really advise all fight fans to read my previous article (http://www.boxingnews24.com/2009/11/pacquiao-cotto-why-cotto-is-not-the-same-fighter-and-will-lose/), in fact if you just type my name into Google all my article’s will come up and many of you will appreciate now what I have said in the past. I have no grudge against no fighter I respect all boxers I just don’t like being made a fool out of. And just for all my fight fans, I want to say to fellow writer Manuel Perez- Don’t embarrass yourself by ever writing again.
Now that is out of the way let’s look to what is next in the welterweight division. Pacquiao now is truly the pound 4 pound king, in fact in my eyes he is the best pound 4 pound fighter of all time hands down. Manny has a legacy now and an immense one at that. Just look at the fighters he has defeated in his career, how many fighter can claim defeating so many great fighters many of them who are legends, he’s beat Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton and now Miguel Cotto. When Pacquiao stormed onto the featherweight scene by stopping Barrera in their first fight who could have imagined that he would reach this far? Who could have thought even two or three years back he would beat Miguel Cotto. This man has defied all rules in boxing, his place in boxing history in my eyes is firmly somewhere in the top ten fighters of all time easily.
Miguel Cotto, I respect him a lot he has always taken the best on and that’s exactly what happens when you fight the best you lose. But he can hold his head high because he lost to a miracle of boxing. I have and always said that Cotto struggles against a fighter who pressure’s him and force’s him into making mistakes and that’s exactly what happened to him last night. What is next for Cotto? Well I personally think it’s not over for him he has a huge fight left yet in Antonio Margarito and possibly Shane Mosley. I remember before ‘firepower’ Cotto fans were saying Margarito should be banned for life and so on. But right now for Miguel Cotto’s career sake he needs that fight to happen to keep his career within the boundaries of the elite fighters. If there is a rematch with Margarito Cotto will lose again. I think Berto will beat Mosley in January and that will be my focus in my next article.
Manny Pacquiao will fight Mayweather because that fight is too big to miss for any of the two fighters regardless of the purse because right now in boxing Mayweather and Pacquiao are the best fighters in the world and they both stand in each other’s way to determine the greatest fighter of this era. I fully believe Mayweather will beat him and hopefully I will write article on that fight once it is confirmed. I hope you have not seen this article as a personal attack on boxing fans because it is not. And one last thing…. well done to Top Rank for an awesome night of boxing, hats off to Miguel Cotto and most importantly to the peoples Champion Manny Pacman Pacquiao.

It is just incredible how a couple of losses and a fighter it totally written off… This has become ridiculous.. Cotto was a very solid fighter who lost to a bonafide phenom in Manny… We have to stop taking credit away from fighters and saying that 28 and 29 year old guys in the modern era are automatically washed up… Maybe Cotto is now? but I don’t know that for sure.. And god knows the Margarito fight did not mean he was a spent force, he gutted out that Clottey fight with a ruined eye you idiots… Barrera had many great fights after getting thrashed by Pac Man, lets cut out all this Monday Morning Quarterbacking…
3 Points:
1. Cotto hasn’t been the same since Margarito’s loaded gloves! He didn’t really beat Clottey, as much as Clottey let it slip away in the last couple of rounds!
2. Mayweather will probably pick Cotto to fight now, since his 2 beating losses! Just like he picked Judah, after he realized Judah took a beating before him! Being softened up, Mayweather looks impressive beating these fighters who come back to quickly just to make a payday to fight him! Mayweather’s making the same mistake Larry Merchant observed of the dethroned pound 4 pound King, Roy Jones made… He told Jones by fighting these tomato cans, you won’t see a real fighter coming and your super amateur style of boxing will eventually lose to a highly skilled technician! Larry was right, as we know! Mayweather took on a smaller man in Marquez whom had just lost before fighting him, repeating his Judah fiasco! Which brings me to my third point…
3. The Pacman, has been busy and is conquering all comers, ex-champs, young champs, and whomever wants him, he does not dodge like Mayweather, Mayweather won’t see this beating coming, because of his Roy Jones like Judgement and even bigger Ego!

Of course Cotto made the 145 weight…it was in the contract but it doesn’t mean that pacman fought the best Cotto by insisting he come down to 145 while at the same time, pacman comes to the scale at 144. Pleezzz……I will duly give pacman his props when and if he fights at the Welterweight limit of 147!! Next!

If Cotto had a better trainer, the story might have been different, but I believe, not in the final outcome.

both fighters have the privilege of fighting each other. both are champion boxers. losing to other is not a shame. Pacquiao and Cotto deserve the fight and respect the boxing fans can give. it so happen that one is better than the other on that event. we all believe in the capabilities of each fighters but in the end, their differences will spell the advantage and snatch the fight which Pacquiao at that night have those advantages. i respect Cotto, he answered the call of the challenger by fighting and standing galantly in the righ up to the last second that he can. Its over now, Pacquiao dominated Cotto. many questions were answered after the fight. lets all look ahead and stop making excuses. Cotto my respect goes to you. Pacquiao…more wins to come.
Cotto lost the fight because he couldn’t really hit Manny with power shots, Manny was in and out like a dancer His superb movement created the opportunties to get the punches off and get out of the way of cotto’s best shots. Mayweather will destroy Manny he’s faster, has a better defense, moves quicker and has more power. That fight will be highly tactical. Cotto took a bad beating in his fight with Manny because he lost control when he got an opening and manny made him pay, but you have to say his pride is intact the referee stopped it just right, he could have been really hurt in that last few seconds. What a warrior. What a sport, what a blog.
well to everyone who thinks im outta my mind can go to hell. cotto is a one of a kind fighter. he has the heart to keep going even if he is getting beat badly. he used up too much energy too fast, thats why he lost to pacman.he didnt fight smart.
I have followed boxing for some 48 years now and I regret to say, “things are the same as they have always been.” Someone always comes along and figures that money is more important than people. Cotto really got screwed in the Margarito fight. Until he is taught better defense, it has ruined his career. No padding cut and softened up his face. I can tell you from my own boxing experience, once your face is cut like that, it continues to do so. If you can’t see the punches, you can’t avoid them. I give both fighters a lot of credit. They are both champions. I think Cotto needs to get an Emanual Stewart and Pacquiao needs to go on and beat Floyd ‘cry baby’Mayweather. He will be the first quality fighter that Mayweather has ever fought. However, trust me, Cotto will come back and beat them both when he gets the right trainer.
At this time Shane Mosley is the best in their division, because he is the most experienced and the hungriest. I don’t think either fighter will fight him. Like most divisions, we will never know who is really the best pfp.

I don’t know Why people are making so many excuses for Cotto. Everyone keeps talking about the old Cotto, but if you seen the Cotto and Margarito fight you can see that he hit Margarito with hard power punches and combinations working his body, and still could not put him down. Yes granted Margarito cheated Cotto had plenty of Opportunity to put him down. This time around he fought a smaller fighter in Pacquiao, who which by the way started his career at 106Ibs. Cotto was suppose to be the stronger fighter and he showed signs of it in the early rounds. Cotto was in top form he looked like the old, “Cotto” to me. The truth is even if Cotto was the “old him” the results would have been the same. Pacquaio was simply to fast and to strong. The smaller guy out powered him. Give credit where credit is due. I admire Cotto he is good fighter and definitly has a lot of heart, but even a fighter like Cotto can admit that he fought the best pound for pound fighter of the this era.
This is a very good article. It is not based on emotions, but on seasoned analysis. Pacquiao is an excellent fighter, who is at the peak of his game at this time, while Cotto is a fighter in decline.
We should not underestimate the tremendous part that Margarito has played in Cotto’s decline. He was really badly bruised by Margarito… both physically as well as psychologically. Miguel also took a significant amount of punishment from Clottey, a fight in which Miguel demonstrated an unusual amount of courage and character. Cotto, I think, would have much difficulty beating fighters like Mosley, Clottey, and even Berto, at this stage of his career. Mayweather and Paul Williams are simply, out of his league now.
Finally, I think that Mayweather will beat Pacquiao, and probably do so by a knockout. Very often knockouts are mentally-, instead of physically-generated.

Cotto is not the same after Margarito, he is BETTER!!! Please do not insult Cotto just because you hate or do not believe in the Pacman. Cotto got knocked down twice early in the fight but still fought and won the 5th round. I’m a Filipino and i love Pacman and I think Cotto is his most dangerous opponent to date.Cotto is great but Pacquiao is just to much for him. We should thank both for an epic fight. Unlike Mayweather matches.
P.S. As i saw Cotto walk out and met by his kids, damn! Thats hard to watch. I was sad for the dude. He is a gentleman and a Boxer with a lot of heart.

AhugemiguelcottoFan – Floyd is going to kil Pacman? Floyd hasn’t “killed” anybody. Couldn’t finish off a blown up lightweight in Marquez. I get it, you’re bitter, but let’s be honest. Floyd couldn’t finish off Marquez and Pacquiao destroyed Cotto. Who do you think would win if Cotto fought Marquez at 144-145? Not saying that Pac would easily dispose Floyd, but it’ll be close fight. If it’s technical, then Floyd would beat Pac on points…if it gets into a brawl and I see it going that way, Pac can win via decision. I just don’t see Floyd avoiding ALL of Pac’s combinations.
Manny went 12 rounds with a shot fighter in cotto trust me he won’t beat floyd he is has the best defense in the sport and is also a better boxer than manny, Lets face it his trainor was an awful boxer there just so much he can teach.
Whats funny about all these “die-hard” Manny Pacquiao fans is. I’ve been watching boxing for a very long time now, and ive seen Pacquiao throughout most of his career. Ive enjoyed watching him aswell, hes a very exciting boxer who has progressed as the years have gone on.
I just find it very funny how many people have jumped on to Pacquiao’s success since his defeat of De La Hoya. Im not saying thats a bad thing because he has made a lot of fans since that win. But, what annoys me is the fans he has made over the past 2-3 years now claim to know everything about Pacquiao, claim he’s the best thing since sliced bread, he is unbeatable.
Like ive said he is very exciting, but im under no illusion that Pacquiao is unbeatable. He is rightly so the P4P best at the moment, but he is very beatable. I wouldnt call him a one dimensional boxer, but if the tactics are thrown out of the window, he knows only one way of fighting, and thats to go out there and trade with fast combinations.
I honestly believe if he faces Mayweather he will lose. Marquez did a brilliant job against him in both bouts (I thought he clearly won the second bout). His counterpunching style caused Pacquiao a lot of problems. Now Pacquiao has improved since those bouts, but I still believe Mayweather has the perfect style to beat him.
Hopefully this bout will happen next, it will keep attracting people to watch boxing, and it’s just another brilliant fight which will no doubt beat box office records.

IMO Cotto isn’t a shot fighter, a shot fighter simply doesn’t beat Clottey. It was a very close fight but Clottey folded in the last two rounds and Cotto won the fight. The Cotto that got into the ring on Sat. night would have beaten a lot of the other welterweights. The truth imo is that MP is the best that he has ever been and he keeps getting better. Floyd likes to say he would have beaten SRL and RD and all of the other great fighters . Floyd get in the ring with MP and if you can beat him maybe people will not laugh so hard when you talk your BS.
@ Krimo – test are made before fight. fights are won in the gym. you sould see how manny trains. how they plan. how they study the fighter. i think even the “OLD” cotto is with him. he will get the same results or even worst. because he will not moonwalk and dance his way around, he will fight manny toe to toe and will get KO like hatton. all manny haters should be hit by a left hook that hatton got. if they survive then they are free to redicule manny. 1. Cotto is too strong for Pacquiao and will kill him with body shots.
Fact- Pacquiao stood toe to toe and took Cotto’s strongest punches- he even let Cotto hit him on purpose saying “cmon” a la Rocky. Cotto checked into a hospital while Pacquiao held a concert with his band after the fight.
2. Pacman does not enough have the to power to hurt Cotto.
Fact- Pacquiao knocked Cotto down twice. Cotto had a busted lip, bloody nose, cuts on both eyes, (major red swollen left clavicle/shoulder from Pacman’s punches -Cotto complaining it hurt when his trainer touched it), numerous cuts on his face, and stated that he checked into the hospital because his health is a high priority
3.Cotto was weight drained.
Fact- Cotto comfortably made the 145 weight and had excellent muscle tone with a lot of power behind his punches. Had Pacman not inflict so much damage on Cotto, Cotto would’ve finish strong and fresh. Cotto was clearly the bigger man and looked around 150 lbs easily in the fight.
A lesser weight drained Cotto would’ve been KTFO, but that didn’t happen because Cotto was in excellent shape.
Congrats to the People’s Champion Manny Pacquiao. 7 world championships. People lie but numbers don’t. And to the haters- hate on Manny you might as well hate on God. Manny is clearly blessed by God without a doubt.

Cotto is a very good boxer and puncher. Pacquiao was also hurt with Cotto’s tremendous hooks and uppercut. The blood from Pacquiao’s ear needed to be drained. Cotto without an experienced was still so good. His defence was good but he could not defend himself for the punches he could not see. These were the punches that destroyed De la Hoya and Hatton. Kudo’s to Cotto’s heart and smart switching of styles that he even lasted that many rounds.

On the future fights, I disagree with Berto v Mosley… I think Mosley beats Berto. I agree that Mayweather beats Pac simply because Mayweather pays more attention to defense. This Pac/Cotto fight shows that there is a clear style that beats Cotto. If Cotto is to have a future, he needs to improve upon his defense. He can redefine himself and still be a force in the welter weight division.
Excuses is for the losers. Cotto is a winner because he has no excuses. He is a boxer with integrity just like Manny. He has nothing to be ashamed of as this moment will come to Manny’s career as well, that is if politics does not ruin him first. Once a fighter always a fighter. They keep fighting the best until they reach a ceiling. Nobody lives forever and stay on top of his game forever. Cotto is an admirable man. I wish that in the end Manny will follow his footsteps.

Well, there is no denying Manny was the better fighter, gave a Cotto the beatin of his life with ease, and is one of the greatest fighters. His accomplishments speak for them Self, Much love for him and I really like Manny as a fighter and person. As for Cotto, for him to even have a chance on restoring his legacy, he will need to continue to fight the great fighters as he has been doing and winning. His road is just going to be a bit longer. He will need to beat Margarito and if he even has a chance again, he will need to fight PACMAN again to be considered among the Elite. Great boxers can always bounce back, lets see how great he is if he can get over these losses. However, if he thinks about even going for it, which I think he will because he does have pride, he will need to start by reconstructing his corner. He needs a trainer who is going to push him beyond his limits and cover his flaws which he has many. He needs to go back to using his body execution skills instead of head hunting as he has been doing lately. He doesn’t have the Trinidad punching power to go head hunting as he has. But he needs a superb trainer to make him better and help him fight back. He needs to stop being Stubborn in his fights and stick to what works for him; A good trainer would make him do that. And now that he knows his Chin is not that great (although we all know manny has incredible power along withh his speed, it a bit rediculous actually) he needs to defend himself better which is one of his great flaws.
I would love to see Manny fight PBF. although Floyds defense is superb along with his speed. At the speed PACMAN throws combos, he is destine to be touch by PACMAN because I don’t believe he has fought anybody as fast as PAC with punch power behind him. However, I know Floyd will be smart and keep him away with his jab. As much as I don’t like Floyd, he is very smart, fast, strong and nows how to stick to the game plan which is why he is so great! I know its all about $$$$$$$ for him but he really needs to fight better fighters and stop dodging punches. I admire your article- commending Manny. But I’m gonna have to disagree with you that Floyd will beat Manny. If Manny has beaten convincingly 3 bigger men like ODLH, Hatton and Cotto and shown he can take punches like no other, I would not be so confident picking Floyd. But hey, it your prerogative

The rest of the article is pretty good except that stupid prediction that Berto will beat Mosley. Mosley will beat the shiet out of Berto.

-said he can control manny’s speed
-will show a different miguel cotto on fight night
- said 100% going to win the fight
-is not going home without the win
the last two were testament that he is mentally prepared for the fight.
after the fight, he said that he fought the best fighter he had ever fought in manny. this shows that he is not making excuses in his loss.

i think pac should be tested honestly i do believe now he is on something. you just cant come up in weight and destroy people the way he has done in his last 3 fights.think about it people he looks absolutely unstoppable.
everybody says cotto would never be the same fighter as he was before. i do not think that should be an excuse for losing against pacquiao. if he was not, he should have lost to clottey. great fighters should always know how to handle a loss. pacquiao lost to erik morales but he never let it be the end of his career, all he wanted to do was to have a rematch, no excuses, just that.
What everyone was forgetting is that manny was once a malnourished kid aspiring to become a great boxer. Now on picking money to the top, he also became well-nourished. We all know that good nutrition and good training regimens will increase power and reflexes. So don’t bother wonder why manny is a phenom. Cotto? He is still that good but can only absorb punishment for 6-8 rds.
I do not think Pac v. PBF will happen. Floyd will probably ask for an insulting split, say 60/40 or 70/30, and will most likely call for a catch weight of 150 or 152 pounds. Floyd avoided fighters like Cotto and Margarito and after seeing what Pac did to Cotto, and how he did it, Floyd will not want to fight Pac either.
No matter how much cotto trains he will never be the same fighter. Its a mental problem more than anything and like I said only he knows how he feels. Mario, people like you can’t just give pac the credit that he deserves. cotto got put out of his game because of the way pac fights. Cotto said it himself, he didn’t know where the punches were coming from, how many fighters could make him say something like that. Don’t try to soften Cotto’s loss with the Margarito fight, he knew this was going to be a big fight for him and that with this fight he could rebuild his name so he trained even harder then before. he was prepared for this fight, just not prepared for Manny. Manny was just to much and to skillful. So stop making excuses and give Manny his credit. Props goes out to Cotto for giving a great fight and giving the better fighter the credit he deserves.

Cotto hasn’t been the same fighter since the margarito fight. Its sad to see someone do that to someone. If manny would of fought the older cotto manny would of not had a chance i don’t care what anyone says.
