Cotto-Pacquiao: Showtime!!!

pac34By Peter Wells: This is it now we are just over a week away from Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto, everything is on the line for both fighters here, Pacquiao, his legacy, now that he takes on his biggest test of his career, and as for Cotto there’s his pride, how will he handle defeat for a second time. There is no doubt that doesn’t Manny lack power but Miguel is much cleverer than Ricky Hatton and a lot younger than Oscar De La Hoya.

Cotto likes southpaw’s a lot, as he favours his left hand but fights out of an orthodox stance he doesn’t have to lean in to land his big left to the body especially in close quarters. Pacquiao is no doubt the faster of the two and looks in great shape(despite whatever Manuel Perez says). If Pacquiao can keep out of harms way he can win this no problem, but you can’t run for 12 rounds against Miguel. The Puerto Rican banger has knocked out some top class operators including Ricardo Torres (TKO 7), Carlos Quintana (W RTD 5) and Zab Judah (W TKO 11) he has also beaten Paulie Malignaggi and Shane Mosley on points. His latest victory was against Joshua Clottey a very skilled Ghanaian boxer. Cotto seemed to just nick it but there was no doubt it was another tough fight, are these battles catching up on Cotto.

Pacquiao hasn’t always had easy fights, he’s beat tough fighters including Marco Antonio Barrera(W TKO 11, W UD), plus the two classic bouts with huge rival Juan Manuel Marquez(D 12, W SD), also he’s had a great trilogy against another Mexican legend Erik Morales (L UD, W TKO 10, KO 3), David Diaz (W TKO 9) in a one sided domination for Manny, then his 8th round retirement of Oscar De La Hoya in a fight most expected Manny was in way over his head. Last but not least there’s his 2nd round knockout of British Hero Ricky Hatton. There’s no better way to put this but ‘Easy’.

So Pacman will have less battle scars than Cotto but Miguel isn’t finished just yet and has at least 1 more spectacular performance. For the first two or three rounds I can see Manny working out of range and quickly jabbing the plodding Miguel, but after about 5 rounds Cotto will start to get Pacquiao in range and will start to catch him flush. Still Manny will keep lively not leaving to many gaps, Cotto I believe will be troubled by a cut in the middle rounds, but proved against Clottey it doesn’t affect him that much anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pacquiao is cut late in the fight, when the fun will start. At about round 10 both fighters will start to land the bombs and I see both fighters going down, but Pacquiao movement will take him through to the final bell, just slightly ahead in a fight some may give Cotto, but Pacman will just edge it.

If anyone has any opinions on what will happen please give your verdict, thank you for reading.

    I’ll go Pacman…

    Split Decision or UD.

or a very late KO or TKO

*remember only Margacheato can KO Cotto ^^*

    Margacheato FTW

    I’ll go with Pacman… ^^

Manny is a great fighter, but Cotto will prove to be too much for him. Miguel is undoubtedly the best puncher he has ever faced and he also has great boxing skills.

Cotto by KO in the 9th.

  • manghuhula says:

compare to diaz vs. pacman fight, pacman win by tko inside 10 to 12 rd

  • Chas says:

Cotto by KO in the 4th

  • Hawaiian Man says:

Miguel will be hitting air; he is too slow, Manny’s foot-work will frustrate Miguel to the point that he will hold Manny’s head with one hand & punch with his head with his free hand; like how Oscar & Ricky did. Miguel will have to resort to cheat tactics…no worries, Manny’s got it covered…he will slap his gloves in protest, he will suck-it-up & BANG throws his right hook for the KO & Miguel will wake-up in Puerto Rico’s canefields thinking he won………

  • Anonymous says:

to all you people out there!.. this is going to be a lopsided fight!.. poor cotto will have no match against the pacman. this, will be the end of cotto’s promising career. cotto should have not accepted the fight. coz he’s going down much quicker than hatton.

the pacman will make history after this… a true legend in the making.

  • Fehr says:

If it come’s out as you’r articule it will be a great fight!!! Still pick the pacman to win!!!

  • Onix says:

Cotto is way to slow.. even on mitt hitting on 24/7.. he’s just to slow for manny

Cotto stills having a hard time loosing weight.
Cotto sparing partners are southpaws but cant be compared to pacmans speed.

manny wins by TKO under 7 rnd.

  • JC says:

    edpau:

With that comment the only thing you are saying is that you don’t know anithing about Cotto.

  • Chas says:

Manny will be much more surprized than Mosley when he feels Miguel’s left jab (he’s a natural southpaw)
on his forehead and a right cross to his chin of a natural welterweight. He can run and hide part of the fight but when Cotto catches him in the counterpunch, it’s goodbye Manny….. Even Oscar said that Manny couldn’t knock him out if he stood with his hands down.. Manny has bitten more than he can chew this time around. Wake up Pac fans!!@!!! Stop dreaming!!!

  • kel says:

    manny will win!!! BIG TIME!!!

  • edpaul says:

If cotto will not feel the punches of manny, then he has the advantage. Manny is smaller but his punches penetrate with accuracy and with speed. Cotto has power, huge one, but like diaz, de la hoya, hatton, they became paralysed when they felt the jarring punches in their faces. They became slow and flat footed. It’s the sting, power is a gonner if it don’t connect. Remember Bruce Lee. Manny will KO Cotto in the fifth.

  • hella says:

i don’t understand how the article writer would suggest that pacman has less battle scars than cotto. pacman has more fights than cotto. pacmans resume has more hall of fame opponents under his belt than cotto. sure cotto has faced much bigger men, but heck those are his own size. anyway, pacman wins by the eight or ninth round.

  • Hawaiian Man says:

Manny has never gone down in His 6 Championship Matches…The Man Is Tough……

  • Chris says:

Cotto will be frustrated by his inability to land his legendary (for Cotto fans) body shots. Pacquiao is ready for a big fighter having sparred with a middleweight, Shawn Porter. No argument that Cotto is bigger but having sparred a middleweight Pacquiao will knock Cotto out with
his speed and explosiveness. Cotto started training early, left for Vegas early and will be leaving the ring early on Nov. 14th after being knocked out by Pacquiao.

  • Don Ramos says:

    Great article!

Pacquiao indeed has firepower, not only speed, to beat Cotto. Just look at what happened to Hatton, KO’d in just two rounds. Prior to losing so badly, Hatton was considered to be a very tough fighter with a rock-solid chin. Boxing analysts would sometimes question Hatton’s boxing skills but never his toughness.

Pacquiao demonstrated that he could outbox and take out even someone like the “Hitman” with a devastating and accurate knockout punch.

  • hasbeen says:

I like both of these fighters very much, they are a credit to the sport of boxing. IMO Cotto should be able to win this contest. JMM gave Pacquia two very hard nights and like JMM Cotto is a very good boxer and he punchs much harder than JMM. If Pacquia wins this fight we will have all seen something very special. He will have shown the world that he is truly one of the greatest fighters alive today. That is a big if though. Cotto is no walk in the park, ask SM.

  • sean says:

I’m wondering, who has the harder punch? Margarito or Pacquiao? Cotto was hurt with Margarito’s “special” hands. Does Pac have the same punch power?

  • Chas says:

Junito (Cotto) will demonstrate once more that strength , power, technique does matter in a larger body frame. Please , don’t compare Hatton or DLH with Cotto! Both were finished up boxers or otherwise they would have not announced their retirement post-fight. I love Manny but he’ll do the same damage to Cotto that JMM did to Mayweather.
    NONE… Cotto in 8.

  • js says:

    Good boxing writing, man…

I can’t wait for this fight!

  • Alan says:

I think with right angle coming in and catching Cottos chin will put him to sleep with enough speed and leverage . With Corley , Cotto got almost knockdown if not Cottos “clinching” and with Corley just almost slapping Cotto with gloves open side to side. What more with a Hatton punch. In the end velocity and right angle to right mandible will end the fight. Fin brother.

  • JC says:

    Alan:

Ask Clottey if jabs don’t decide fights. I think the only knock down on the fight with Cotto was in first round and precisely with a jab.

I think that knock down make the difference on that one.

  • JC says:

In Torres fight Cotto was a light welterweight (140) and his body was asking for more pounds. He have to sacrifice himself to fight on that division and that’s a problem. But, who cares, at the end, he KO Torres and won that fight.

On 147 Lb. I think he already prove his chin and stamina, more that Manny Paquiao on his entire career. He take real power punches from all the best welterweight, including Margarito with his special hand wraps. (Remember on Margarito’s fight Cotto take a knee after 11 brutal rounds).
    That’s a TKO not a KO.

    The question is:
If Manny can survive 12 rounds of runing around, clinch and pushing Cotto? or What Manny do after 10 rounds throwing power punches and find out that nothing happen with Cotto?

Cotto is ready, I hope Manny take this one seriously.

  • Alan says:

I’m sorry but a boxer who rely on jab has no place in boxing. Jabs is overreated and does not win fights , power punches and combination win fights , just ask Tyson . Pac in less than 5 rounds .

  • galengco says:

Cotto’s only chance is winning by k.o. He cant outpoint the PACMAN he throws 4-5 power punch combinations refeatedly, and he is a sharpshooter. Its PAC on 4

  • EDL says:

I think that cotto is a shade of what he use to be. After his ko he had a poor uopponent in jennings and shaved it against clottey. This one’s for the pac man

  • 123 says:

    cotto via tko in 7th

  • Anonymous says:

I think Pacman will win under 5 rounds , Cotto might have faced some of the best Welter in the Biz, but he have never face a speedster with power like Pacman. and Cotto’s chin is suspect as in Torres fight . Only Torres does not have enough power to put on the finishing touch. If Cotto is fighting Mayweather it my end up on decision, coz Floyd is one punch speedster , but speed, power and 5 combination with deadly accuracy will end the fight under round 5.Cotto’s said last fight with Clottey he was terribly slow , almost quit at 9 round. And Clottey was even taking vacation within each rounds, but with non stop combination he’s gonna go down.

  • BIG WILLY says:

VERY GOOD ARTICLE UNLIKE PEREZ WHO DONT KNOW ANYTIN BOUT THE SWEET SCIENCE.THIS WILL BE A GREAT FIGHT BUT I DISAGREE WIT U ON A COUPLE OF THINGS.FIRST MANNY HAD MANY GREAT BATTLES AT FEATHERWEIGHT AGAINST THE MEXICAN TRIO CORRECT MANY DOUBTED HIM AGAINST DELAHOYA BUT ANY REAL BOXING FAN KNEW WHO WAS GONNA WIN,HATTON WAS NOT AN EASY FIGHT.WITH MANNY’S SUPERIOR SKILL SPEED AND POWER HE DISMANTLED HATTON AND MADE IT LOOK EASY.LAST BUT NOT LEAST MANNY WILL PULL OFF A KO IN THE 10TH,THOUGH IT WILL BE A GREAT FIGHT AND CAN GO BOTH WAYS.

  • Analysis says:

    Hmm… Lets see
Cotto already had a hard time knocking down Mosley who is just above Cottos movement speed. What more to a lightning fast fighter.

with a high rate knockdown of
37 KOs in that 47 fights.

Experience in boxing pacman also wins

  • Seattle says:

I bet you anything. After the fight all this PAC hatter will disappear. I can’t wait…PACMAN by KO inside 9

  • D says:

you are terrible about knowing the fighters. “Cotto has one more spectacular fight left”? Cotto by late round Knockout.

  • Team J&J says:

    To Al:

Listen, This comment is very serious. You are wrong you dont even know it. By late round Roach will throw the white towel, Thats how is gonna be, Cotto wont knock him out and pac less will ko cotto. Cotto will beat him so bad roach will throw the towel. This is not even a fight Al, Cotto is on another level than pac, is not even close. you will see.

  • engot_kayong_mga_pacmaniacs says:

Pac is going down in 8 or less. What’s left for Pacnuthuggers then? Nothing. Pac will be exposed.

  • Paul Mason says:

Pacquiao to win 5th round tko

  • JoeyB says:

Good article. Cotto is powerful and fast.. but I think Pacquiao will surprise us all… Manny will jab.. punch in and get out.. this will frustrate Cotto.. and will be more open for left straights.. I can’t wait to see this fight.. I like Cotto also but I will go with Pacman

  • Pacman says:

It will be like Diaz vs Pacman. Cotto will not land any descent shots to Pacman because pacman will keep his distance. cotto leave his face open when executing a shot in a slower manner that would give pacman over the top shots right and left.
i see TKO due to cuts. Pacquiao wins in 6 to 7.

  • Djiby says:

    Excellent article Peter.
Even if i’m french and my english isn’t perfect, i’m a happy to find in america this kind of website where you can give your opinion, your view…In France the website for boxing are too weak…

For the fight i love both of boxer. However i prefer pacman for his talent and the man he is( i’m not saying that cotto is a bad man ! ). However i have some fear for pacquiao because cotto has strong power and can knock him by only one shot. Pacquiao must be very careful.

Good fight boys ! and thank you again Peter

  • Kell says:

You said if anyone has any opinions. Well I do, and I say that Cotto is going to flatten this so called great p4p guy. Nothing nice about it. Cotto is just going to knock Pac right through the ropes.

  • kam says:

Cottos left hook to the LIVER is a devastating punch could take manny right out.

  • iz says:

Great article however I see cotto later in the fight freddie will throw in the towel cotto power will be to much cotto is hungry as shown by 24-7 cotto camp is strickly business… for example cotto was averiging 45 punches every round sparring before clottey fight cotto now is averging 65…manny better be ready for a war …cotto is a machine!!!!!

  • Osman Malik says:

Pacquio has great speed but cottos left hook to the body is the major weapon if he can get manny in range

  • Shaz says:

WRITERS LIKE LIAM SANTIAGO A KHAN HATER AND MANUEL PEREZ PACMAN HATER SHOULD LEARN FROM YOUR ARTICLE. THANK YOU.

  • Gary Samson says:

    LET’S GO PACMAN !!!

  • david m says:

I like cotto by way of tko.I dont know if pacman can take a beaten like margarito did or give a beaten like magarito did.

  • david m says:

I like the fair objective u give on this fight.

  • Al says:

Good article! Thanks for writing a straight forward article about this fight and leaving out all the nonsense that some writers post. Nice breakdown of the fight too.

I don’t think the fight will go the full 12 rounds though, it will probably go until 7 at the most and there will be a KO by Pacquiao or Cotto will throw in the towel.

Since Pacquiao is so fast, Cotto will be getting hit a lot more and he will waste a lot of energy either chasing Pacquaio. This will in turn make him fade earlier on in the fight, which Pacquiao will capitalize on. This will most likely frustrate Cotto and hopefully he doesn’t resort to dirty tactics (ie. low blows as he did when he faced Judah, throwing down his opponent like he did vs Clotty). Hopefully he has enough respect for a 6 time, 6 weight division champion to not resort to these things, but who knows.

However, if Cotto takes a more defensive, counter punching approach he might be able to last until the later rounds. If it does go the distance, Pacquiao will win on points.

good article im going with pacman round 8
