Andre Berto – The last great hope of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

By Jorge Lugo: On January 30th, 2010 Andre Berto will take on Shane Mosley in what is a unification bout for the World Boxing Council and WBA welterweight titles. Mosley, the WBA champion is a boxing legend who is recognized for his fast and heavy handed punches. Berto, the WBC champion is known to be the “future” of the sport, his signature right hook and powerful right hand are worry for any top fighter.
I am no rocket scientist but, IF Mosley does win and considering his fashion of beating Berto, I doubt highly that Mayweather or Pacquiao would be so anxious to get him in the ring. Fortunately in this scenario for Mosley, the truth would be all too simple. At that time, Mosley’s (*Again, IF he wins) argument for a fight, would be too hard to ignore for anyone claiming to be the best! Mosley and Mosley alone has a stake in the legacy’s of both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. It is how badly Mosley wants to be recognized as one of the best that determines his possibilities of being the “third wheel” in the Mayweather-Pacquiao drama.
If Berto wins on the first month of the new year, then he will be doing a gracious favor for both Pacquiao and Mayweather. Regardless of how the fight is won, he will have single handlely picked away a MAJOR concern and worry as both Mayweather and Paquiao can say they dont have to fight Mosley. Mosley, if he loses, surely would be back tracked and probably would still try to get a fight from Pacquiao or Mayweather. However, his reach for history will be long gone as I am cofident Mayweather or Pacquiao wont fight him once/if he loses.
Therefore, Shane Mosley has a lot on his plate coming into the new year. He has the chance to not only make history but to erase the plans of “P4P” for either Pacquiao or Mayweather Jr. Berto who is by no means an easy fight for any fighter, will be stepping into the ring to make a statement. If he wins, I doubt Pacquiao and Mayweather will fight him as I can see them saying his record is too young and he needs more experience to be considered a liable opponent. However, a win over Mosley is surely a good look and major step for Berto’s career as he can make even bigger fights and get more notice down the road. Given Berto’s God given ability, he can very well be victorious. Make no mistake, this is not an easy task for Mosley or for Berto.
On January 30th, 2010 I guarantee you that regardless if a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight does get made, both fighters will be watching Berto-Mosley, and If I had to make a bet. I would undoubtedly say both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be hoping Berto gets the “W.”

Mosley is feared by both Manny and Mayweather.Mayweather challenge Mosley after he lost twice to Vernon Forrest and was thinking about retiring. After Mosley came back and started winning again Mayweather didn’t want anything to do with him. Mosley challenged Mayweather after the JMM fight because of the disrespectful things Mayweather said about Mosley on ESPN. Manny won’t fight Mosley either because he went to Roach’s gym and said he would fight Manny at 140lbs. and they wanted no parts of him and they decided to fight Cotto. They fear Mosley because Mosley said he is not fighting for money. His finances are secure even after his divorce. He said he is fighting for his legacy and the hall of fame. Anyone can fight for a guaranteed payday win or lose. Mosley is fighting for his legacy which makes him more hungary and dangerous then either Pacman or Mayweather.
In life everything needs an opposite to exsist. Mega fights always need 2 worthy opponets equally important to the fight to happen, so for all championship fights split should be 40/40 and the winner gettin 20 more. Promoters jobs get easier, more fights get made, no egos in the way. No other sport has this dynamic of choosing who to oppose to become champion. No more mulit belts just ring champs so in order to be the best you gotta beat the best. Right now in the division where all the action is Shane Mosley is the guy. Poor Shane an all time great being over looked by the big stacks of money that have piled up in front of him. Only thing now is for him to get dirty and pull a Tarver and show up where these guys are and make a scene. I can’t stand Tarver but the call Jim the magic man cause how he got RJJ in the ring not once but 3 times and he wasn’t half as talented as Surgar Shane.
mosely!!! all my “MONEY” (snickers) is with MOSELY. really man. MANNY dont need mosely as much you think… its MONEY who needs MOSELY. mosely is an elite legitimate welterweight and MONEY has been a welterweight for a long time, and they should have fought already.
i’ve always thought, MONEY have to fight MOSELY to prove that his claims of superiority over other fighter in his time
MANNY? i heard he’s running for office… i bet, after the mayweather fight… he’ll be making enough millions to last him a lifetime..and he doesnt have to risk his neck anymore just to see his family comfortable. he’s not spending his money in dollars. its MONEY who’s spending his money in USD.
Styles make fights, regardless of Cotto beating Mosley and Pac beating Cotto, that by no means = Pac beating Mosley. I figured Pac would run through Cotto because of their styles however Pac would most certainly lose to Mosley. I’m being objective and not blinded by my preference for any fighter.
Shane wins this one by 12 rd unanimous Decision
Yep Mosley is a dark horse, he has great skills, a real alrounder and on his day I think he could beat anyone in front of him. Time is running out for him though – he’s only got maybe two good fights left in that monstrous engine. Xavier made a good point about pacman – Roach chose 3 fights with fighters who predominantly depend on the left hook, which isn’t a great shot to tag southpaws with. Marquez v Pacquiao were such close fights because Marquez banged that right hand in all day long. Mosley has the speed and two handed power to do the same and the smarts to adapt his gameplan, plus, a guy who’s come back from the otherside like Mosley is a survivor and has something to prove. If he beats Berto there could be no stopping him.
pmcblack—Funny you say mosley laid the blue print to beat cotto Because I think cotto laid the blue print to beat pac and I not saying he can but Pbf has the best chance of beating PAC! That jab and movment fustrated him for a while and PBF is alot faster and has great stamina and wont take risk! And my next point is last three opponents for Pac was all fighters that depended on big left hooks!(no big rights) & pbf has a great straight right! Remember Im not saying pbf will win for sure but if there is a fighter that can beat him its PBF Im no fan of PBF thats where my money IS !!!!!!!!
I don’t think that MP is afraid of any fighter. Hell after AM knocked out Cotto Manny said he thought he could beat AM. I thought to myself that’s a brave little ******. I also thought that’s one crazy little***** because of the size difference. I really don’t think MP cares who he fights if the moneys right.
Mosely is even more dangerous now that his new trainer has him using the left jab. (Jack Mosely needed to step down as Shane’s trainer) Cotto, heck Shane walked him down and backed him up all fight. Albeit, Shane fought a dump fight (jabless) but it was a close decision that should have been a draw at best. Don’t forget, Shane laid the blueprint to beat Cotto. Even in defeat, Shane exposed Cotto’s weakness and started his downward spiral. Berto is young and his youthful exuberance will be his demise. He will make a mistake or two and Shane will exploit him. (Collazo should have gotten the decision against Berto) When Mosely wins, Floyd will retire and Manny will accept the challenge…….This will be a dangerous fight for Manny because Shane is a boxer and a fighter. The only problem is that Shane might be 40 yrs old before they fight. Floyd will come out of retirement after Shane’s 44th birthday and challenge him to a fight……….

I definitely favor Berto to win against Mosley. Berto is a very good boxer and a good puncher. Shane Mosley is decent as a boxer, and also good as a puncher. Mosley lost to Cotto because Cotto jabbed and outboxed him for the last 4 to 5 rounds of the fight. Berto is a better boxer that Cotto as he is a natural boxer, while Cotto is a natural bruiser. So when you add it all up it looks as if Mosely is in trouble. I think that this fight will be Berto’s coming out party. And, unfortunately for Mosley it could be his retirement party. I believe people may be putting a little too much stock in the fact that he defeated Margarito. After all, if a fighter depends on having an edge like loaded gloves he couldn’t be the same fighter when he loses that edge. Margarito without loaded gloves is an unknown quantity, other than the KO loss he recieved at the hands of Mosley.
I dont think Pacman will duck him. Pacman has proven that he is ready to fight anyone that his promoter wants him to be against. Although it aint an easy fight for MP either, but SSM will find it hard to beat MP. PBF, on the other hand, will duck SSM. Everyone knows that the guy is preseving his record so fighting a legend will be cautiously done.
People ripped me on the pacman articles, but MOSLEY is already exposed as a cheater. Who is to say he is not cheating again? He is nearly 40 and still one of the top P4P guys. He dosent deserve another mega fight, hopefully Berto wins.
good article. i think mosley has a good chance at beating up mayweather. mosleys too strong,fast, and good to let him get away with boxing. he would make floyd fight. i can see mosley having trouble with pacquiao though because hes really offensive and he has great movement and footwork, better than mosleys. i would have loved to have seen mosley/mayweather/pacquiao/cotto all fight eachother
Mosley and Berto are good fighters and for sure both will prepare for their upcoming fight this January 30. Who will win? Who knows but only the best will win the fight.
Mosley can definitely beat Mayweather. NO DOUBT
but not Pacman.
Mayweather is way overrated.
1. Dela Hoya landed some good punches on Mayweather. And Dela Hoya already slowed down.
2. Hatton hit him a few good ones. And Hatton is an amateur.
3. Judah stung Mayweather a few times.

I just don’t know if Mosley can land a fight with either of the two…both maybe retiring after their fight should it happen…Manny’s close friends and relatives including her wife says – one more fight ( against Floyd ) simply because of economics! Who can refuse 40-48M dollars in earnings win or lose in just one fight?

mosley was called out by mayweather while mayweather was not a big draw. mosley ignored mayweather because he knew he wouldnt make money. But now the numbers that mayweather does….why should mayweather give mosley a payday of his life? mosley just wants a last good paycheck to call it quites!
This will be a great fight. My mind says Mosley, my heart says Berto.

mosley has a chance to fight pacman,why did he announce on the day that manny fight cotto that he will go o n with with his pospone fight in jan.,again like floyd just wait to the end of that day,you could have had that fight with manny,,called them both afraid…have other plans.games…
I have to agree with you.. Berto has not been the force some reckoned originally. Yes he wins but he doesn’t dominate lately.
Mosley who I am a huge fan of can blow hot and cold but when he is on, boy is he on. He’s win over Margarito was astonishing, speed, power and elusive defence.
I’ve watched that fight 6 times or more and every time I am blown away by his skill that night..

His barely called out Pacquiao and after he did he accepted the fight with Berto the day before Pacquiao Cotto! Mosley is a good fighter but in my books would not beat either Mayweather or Manny plus what he did after the Mayweather Marquez fight was just disrespectful.
