Amir Khan hot stuff or just another protected Fighter?

By Joe Eccleston: With a Olympic silver medal, a win over Barrera and a world champion at just 22 years old it all sound good for the hot prospect from England. With fighters like Calzaghe retired and Hatton looking like his best years are behind him, it looks like the youngster is going to be the future of British boxing with Freddie Roach in his corner and having sparring session against Manny Pacquiao this will only help the young fighter develop.
As for Amir he still has time rectify this as long as he steps up opponent and fast. People keep going on that he is only a young lad, yes he is but he is also a WORLD champion! Its time we found out whether he is the real deal or just a paper champion. I would like to see him fight someone like Timothy Bradley or Marcos Madiana a win over either of these would make people look at him a say wow this guys for real.
He keeps on talking up a fight with Ricky Hatton but at this stage I would like him fight some top 10 light welters before moving on to fights like that. You earn your pay check against fighters like that i.e. Hatton, Marquez, Pacquiao an Mayweather. Even a shot Ricky Hatton would eat this guy at this present point in time. He needs to earn these fights instead of just thinking the world owes him these fights.
After his fight in December he needs to up his opponent and start earning the respect that he lost when he was blasted out by Brendis Prescott. Good look to the boy hope he can do it and bring the people of the UK many big fights in the future.

he cant take a punch, he has no future in the sport at the highest level, the majority of british fans hate him and want him to fail
lets see khan take on a really hot prospect. everyone is fed up with these predictable fights and if you’re claiming to be the next best p4p and the best prospect in boxing today then you have to back it up or people lose respect.
khans response is that he might leave the uk because we’re all jelouse and resentful. so what does that tell you. it tells me he feels he’s done his best and doesnt have much more to offer otherwise he would have said….i will take on the best …i will take on maidana in my next fight

I completely agree asley, there’s no need need to bring race into it. He fights for Britain with pride. Everybody can have an opinion onhis fighting ability. However nobody can question his patriotism. He wears the union jack with pride.
Also keep an eye out to new British heavywieght hope RICHARD TOWERS……….

Pretty good article, I agree that he should be stepping up with regard to the quality of his opposition.
Only thing, US fighters are also guilty of enjoying the benefit of a home crowd. Lacy comes to UK and gets destroyed, Taylor goes to Germany and gets KO’d and Dirrell comes to England and is beaten.
The only reason the US fighters can stay at home is because this is where most of the money is, gone are the days when the US had the very best the boxing world had to offer…

If Khan really wants to position himself for big payday fights with the likes of Marquez, or Hatton he needs to face off with some “name” fighters. Diaz and Urango come to mind and both could be interesting fights given the style of both fighters. Maidana if not a good fight for him at this time. The fight wouldn’t generate big money and Maidana is too dangerous to fight for small change.
I doubt Roach will keep him under wraps now, but he’s got more on his mind right at the moment. Wouldn’t be surprised if he put him in against either Bradley or Maindana – his outlook on both Barrera and Kotelnic was that Khan should be able to beat them if he wants to compete at world level. I reckon Roach will be out to make a statement and put him in against high level after the first defence to silence the critics. He never hid pacquiao from anyone why would he do it with Khan?

Hes both. Hes got a very big backing, selling on PPV and the more he wins the more people get onboard his following, with his impressive record, amatuer achievments and his managers marketing abilities you gotta say hes an exciting package.
On the other hand theres a portion of people within the boxing community and boxing fans who are not impressed with his chin, attitude, record, manager and dont trust him to fight the right fights in the future. Theres also an element of racism, like it or not its a factor, a very small one but its there.
Personally im always guna support him but im not really liking the path hes been going down to get to where he is, not quite the most honest or impressive route as far as im concerned.
He does have oppertunities to prove his worth in the future but its up to his whole team to decide if they wana be brave or sneaky.
I think he will fight and beat Salita and look for a big fight
I think he is making a madatory defence (Salita and avoiding Maidana)
