All roads lead to Sugar Shane Mosley!
By Jorge Lugo: Freddy Roach has been saying along with many other people that he wants Floyd Mayweather Jr. next for Manny, and given his impressive stoppage of Cotto, it actually looks like this fight might take place. Unfortunately though, all this talk of a Manny Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr. fight needing to take place to prove who’s the best lead’s me to further ask the what if’s? If Manny Pacquiao beats Floyd Mayweather jr regardless of fashion, should he retire and continue into politics like so many say he will?
That thing is called “Sugar” Shane Mosley, the CURRENT welterweight champion! Just like Cotto was recognized going into his fight with Pacquiao as a dominant force in the welterweight division, so is Shane Mosley recognized! Now, people may say “But Mosley lost to Cotto”, this may be true as he DID. But what people need to realize, and this is one of the reason’s Shane Mosley is still talked about in the sport today, is that he didn’t get destroyed by Cotto, he lost a very competitive and close fight with Cotto!
Antonio Margarito, the man that gave Cotto his first brutal loss, was demolished earlier this year in the same but QUICKER fashion than Miguel Cotto by Manny Pacquiao. Therefore Floyd Mayweather Jr and Pacquiao to simply fight each other and claim to be the best would be redundant without fighting Mosley! If you look at Mosley’s boxing record, his loses came from slug fests with Vernon Forrest(RIP), Winky Wright, and of course Cotto. These men all shared actual fights with Mosley and actually weren’t strategists as Pacquiao was (To Pacquiao’s benefit). However, as Wright and Forrest where in bigger weight classes, Mosley had to go up in weight to fight them. Now even though he lost those fights, the fact is that just as with the Cotto fight, Mosley still made his other loses in a heavier weight division very competitive! A weight division that Manny Pacquiao says is too much for him! Shane never gave a boring moment in those fights with bigger and stronger men. Strength I believe that Pacquiao can not afford to obtain without giving away a significant amount of his much needed speed to Mosley. Speed I believe, that Mosley has that is significantly equal or even faster than Floyd Mayweather Jr!
In September of this year, Shane Mosley stepped into a ring and called out a supposed best boxer of his time and what happened? A scared Floyd Mayweather Jr would take his anger out on the ring anouncer and later downplay a challenge everyone feels he should take! Strange enough, 3 months before that. Sugar Shane Mosley would make a challenge to the talked about sensation Manny Pacquiao. Offering to go down to 140 POUNDS to face him! Sadly, Shane Mosley’s plea would be unanswered as Manny would wait 1 MONTH to challenge a Miguel Cotto. Thus making a fight with Cotto official, ONE month after Cotto’s fight with Clottey. I am sorry, but Mosley has the most recognized belt in the welterweight division and has been off for a yr begging for people to fight him! For two of the best fighters out there to simply avoid him makes things clear, they know what Shane Mosley can do to them!
At the age of 38 years old, with 52 fights, 38 KO’S, 1 No contest and 5 competitive loses(2 to Wright, 2 to Forrest and 1 to Cotto). Shane Mosley has proved that he is def a needed fight for any fighter that wants to call them self the best. Anyone who feels otherwise is flat out lying! No matter what people say about his steroid scandal people can’t take away the truth. The fact is, before and after every fight the boxing commission tests ALL professional fighters! Mosley tested positive for steroids once and that was in his second fight with De la hoya (The first first I might add, Mosley beat a De la hoya in his prime). So regardless on whether he knew or not(which I believe he didn’t), Mosley tested positive one time and has not come up since.
Having wins over better opponents than Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr’s records respectively, Shane Mosley has got to be the best P4P fighter out there next to Manny (since he beat Cotto). If he happens to get past a true up and comer that is Andre Berto(which many believe he will), there should be no reason why the winner of Pacquiao-Mayweather Jr. shouldn’t fight him. Say what you will, love or hate him, ALL ROADS LEAD TO “SUGAR” SHANE MOSLEY!

It seems that Sugar Shane Mosley is on Mayweather’s “A” list after all, or may be I should say, Mayweather is the only one at this moment who is traveling on a straight and narrow path to Mosley! A possible fight could happen sometime mid 2010 due to Berto’s cancellation of his Jan bout with the Champ Mosley. (My prayers goes out to Berto, his family and everyone who loss love ones due to the tragic incident in Haiti.
If Mosley vs Mayweather happens… I will get my popcorn ready because this fight will be MEGA! We will see if Mayweather accepts the fight and put all the crictics to rest about him ducking real competition. If he does, I believe Money Mayweather will be more than ready to take on Mosley but I wonder if Mayweather has bitten off more than he could chew! Mosley will bring a lot of pressure and attempt to finish Mayweather early. This will be the most difficult fight in Mayweather’s career. I am a huge Mayweather fan as well as Mosley nevertheless, I hate to see these guys fight each other. But if I have to pick one…. Mosley by decision!
All roads lead to Sugar Shane Mosley…. unfortunately Pac-Man will not by traveling on that road because Clottey will be that road block standing in the way. Mayweather is still enroute but you are not on is “A” list of scheduled meetings! Instead, look out for Clottey because he is coming full speed and taking shortcuts to reach you.. Get your popcorn ready….. here comes Clottey!!! Mosley vs Clottey Dec 2010!!! Win that fight Mosley… and you may get an opportunity to meet the Wizard…. Money Mayweather!!!
I think you got the injection part wrong. They used the clear and the cream which i dont think were taken through an IV that may be why he thought they were perfectly legal. The trainer may have rubbed it on him without him knowing, he may have just thought it was like tiger balm or lotion.
Shane is no ready you can go and look at film on how shane and PacMan loss fights.Go and look at film when floyd loss oh! I forgot you can’t find no film on how to beat perfection
PAC VERS MOSLEY IS THE BEST FIGHT I BET ANY AMOUNT THAT MOSLEY WONT RUN FROM PAC MAN IF MOSLEY CATCHES HIM FLUSH IT IS GOOD NIGHT!
The best fight id like to see is Pacman vs Sugar Shane, for the lineal welterweight title!
MouthWeather doesn’t deserve anything, let him fight unknowns and non-primes like Canelo.
Mosley VS Pacquiao! Let the TRUE WARRIORS FIGHT!
If Mosley beats Berto, all roads will definately lead to him.
This is the first time i have ever agreed completely with any writer on here. great article!!
Pacquiao vs. Mayweather is not going to happen! Floyd will not take the risk after what Pac did to Cotto; money will be Floyd’s excuse for not taking the fight. Sugar Shane may get the fight with Pac; if he does, he has a shot to win because of his power and speed.
As talented as Floyd is, he is the problem in this whole mess! He doesn’t want to take risks! Please, keep Ricky Hatton out of this conversation; he is a foregone conclusion with either fighter!
Two names that are being left out that I think would make interesting fights for either of them are Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron. How do you feel Floyd, Manny, or Shane will fare against either of these two fighters especially Williams?
Don’t know why there are a lot of Pacman bashers … these people have no idea how to box, all talk … they think they are better than those who actually DO! They think they are experts but guess what? THEY ARE ALL LOSERS .. Pacman has remained the WINNER … so go ahead and keep bashing him … Pacman will continue to do his thing (WIN) and your boys will continue to do their thing (LOSE with excuses). Kudos to Cotto (he is the only one who did not whine or give any excuse). You should all be ashamed … it is not you who are in the ring losing .. and you have all these excuses … Just keep your thoughts to yourself or prove it in the ring .. oops I guess you can’t do it .. LOSERS!!!
Floyd would beat both Pacquiao & Mosley. Mosley Vs Pacquiao definitely needs to happen first, thats only if Mosley beats Berto.
I know that Pacquiao beat Hatton and Cotto (De La Hoya fight doesn’t deserve a mention, he was drained)…but I really think he would suffer serious problems against Shane Mosley. Mosley can explode with punches better than most fighters.
I know Mosley beat Margarito but he really needs to put in one hell of a performance against Andre Berto if he has any chance of landing a fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao. The world wants Mayweather Vs Pacquiao.
the welterweight division consist of the ff boxing governing bodies.WBA,WBC,IBF,WBO,IBO, and so on. its really ridiculous but, there they are. a lot of boxers if given a chance to fight and win one of this belts its a breakthrough. my point here is, whoever hold the most belt gets the big slice of the cake, in the case of pacquiao vs mayweather,
Fighting floyd,Manny has nothing to get except money$$$%but fighting Yuri Foreman or Corey Spinks,Manny will be the greatest boxer of all all time, Greatest fighter of all time,Manny has a big chance of beating this 2.For me fighting Floyd is meaningless,Manny has nothing to prove, its already proven thay Manny is the best and better than Floyd
Manny Pacquiao — Efren Reyes— the best of both sports this planet has ever seen. Wow, is that not saying something for the Philippines ?
Now, comment, pls
I’m a huge Pacman fan and I agree to this article.
I actually see Mosley more of a threat to Pacquiao than Mayweather because of Mosley’s aggressive stance.
The biggest factor that Pacquaio would have with Mosley is if Mosley can take Pacquaio’s power punch. If he can, the fight can go either way because both fighters are busy punchers.
By this, I would love to see the fight since this will surely be a great slugfest after the Cotto fight.
Never mind the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. Regardless of who will win, this won’t be an exciting fight as Pacquiao vs. Mosley.
fight mosley? then after pacman beats him, all the usual excuses will again surface: ‘beyond his prime’, ‘too old’, ‘weight-drained’, etc. floyd is the ONLY one left worthy of the pac’s time.
Dude you are an idiot for saying Pacquio’s win was not impressive.
As much respect as I have for Manny, and especially Floyd(who I think would beat Pacquiao by the way), there is no way around that Shane Mosley IS THE MAN at welterweight!!
Absolutely right, Floyd & Manny must face Mosley if they want to be considered the top welter in the world.
Good article, but spoilt by the hating on Mayweather.
Would have been better more objective if you also mentioned Mosley’s irregular performances, such as his workman like struggle to over come a well over the hill Mayorga just over a year ago….
nice article…you got a point there…
i would love to see manny fighting mosley…
Mosley just wants his big pay day before retiring. Floyd or Pac are his last chance for that. He is no match for either of them.
If he beats Berto in a flashy manner then perhaps he has a chance. We’ll have to wait and see.
Pac and Floyd fight is inevitable! Once Pac wins, he has nothing more to prove.
Mark,
When I give height, reach and stance advantage it means I am giving height, reach and stance advantage! No way does that prove or mean that I am giving it to Mosley based on that! If you seriously can’t see that Mosley had fought better fights than mayweather than thats on you. O and everyone knew Hopkins was great even going into the calzaghe fight. Thats why people were so divided on who would win! Seriously though, Mosley is not as old as Hopkins and he dominated Antonio Margarito! You seriously need to give this man credit. There is NO WAY Mayweather Jr or Pacquiao can say there the greatest if they dont fight Mosley and beat him at some point in there careers! Thats just the truth!
I certainly dont think mosley gets enough credit. i feel he is top dog right now in the welterweight division. his performance against margarito was sensational, and makes it even more so after what margarito did to cotto, considering mosley lost a very close fight to cotto.
to step up and demolish margarito was performance of the year.
if he beats berto easily, he is double strap holder and surely can make a big fight with pac/money winner. heres hoping.
On paper, if we look at stats like those, valuev and haye should have been a win for valuev. Samegor charguev and valuev. Holyfield shouldn’t have come close either. Size and reach aren’t the only factors.
And mayweather has some good names on his resume that you two haven’t mentioned.
I don’t think either fighter needs shane as much as he needs them. H beating him would lead to the same arguments we’ve seen so far. He’s too old etc. Just look at what people said about Hopkins after the calzaghe fight. It wasn’t until he battered pavlik that people realised he was still capable of fighting at that level.
Mosely is the danger man that noone will fight because hes the party crasher, floyd knows mosely hasnt got much time being slightly older than him and pacaquio, so he deliberately wont take the fight because in his mind all roads lead to floyd mayweather and he picks and chooses opponents
Check this out:
Manny Pacquiao
Height: 5′6 1/2
Reach: 67 inch
Stance: Southpaw
Floyd Mayweather Jr
Height: 5′8
Reach: 72 inch
Stance: Orthodox
Shane Mosley
Height: 5′9
Reach: 74 inch
Stance: Orthodox
Height and reach advantage out of all 3 goes to Mosley while stance I would give to Pacquiao as it is harder to fight a southpaw then a southpaw fighting a orthodox fighter.
Al Francis,
Lol I meant *can! Thats twice I messed up, lol! Regardless ur right…
i know what you mean though, Shane is one of the ‘big guys’ that manny was suposed to lose to in his last 3, but shane, though his speed might not be quite on manny’s level, certainly isnt far off. he’s by far the fastest of the big guys.
Al Francis,
It’s cool. You were just proving your point. I cant respect that!
sorry jorge, didnt mean to rabbit on, i wouldnt have posted that if i had seen your response. only noticed after.
Mosley has De La Hoya (twice) as the ONLY sure thing hall of famer on his record.
Pacquiao has Barrera (twice), Morales (twice), Marquez and De La Hoya. Thats 4.
For mosley, Margarito could find himself there, and Vargas may even fluke his way in, so we’ll say 3 for shane, that really is generous though.
And for Pacquiao, Cotto and Hatton could well find themselves in the hall, so that makes 6.
Al Francis,
That may be true! And I cant def see your point as far as Pacman’s record so I stand corrected. In my defensive, I was referring to competitive fights but then again, Pac hasnt had a competitive fight because he is that good! Nonetheless you are right so i stand corrected! He does without a doubt have a better record than Mayweather though!
good shout Jorge, ive long been a believer that the toughest fight for both floyd and manny is against shane.
But shane doesnt have more wins against better opposition than manny. manny has more hall of famers on his record than any other active fighter.
packman will destroy them both!
Mosleys problem is that he lost to Cotto on points, but he did beat Margarito and is in form. If he beats Berto he is still in the mix.
Mayweather or Mosley v Pacman would both be interesting fights but it’s difficult to look beyond a Pacman win with the form he is in currently.
Rob,
Bernard Hopkins is 44 going on 45 and he is beating fighters in there prime half his age! Ur honestly foolish if u think Shane Mosley isn’t in top form right now! Personally I think Mosley has the best chance of beating Mayweather and Pacquiao! Hos trainer is no joke neither!
Thanx! I also saw the Pacquiao-Cotto post fight where Arum said Mosley missed out on fighting Pacquiao by taking the Berto fight. What he needs to realize is Mosley is a fighter and has to stay busy! If he would of waited to fight Pacquiao it would be a almost 2 yrs before he will in the ring again, as Manny understandingly needs time to rest now. Shane Mosley did what any real fighter would do when avoided, fight other fighters! Again, thanx for your comment.
Great article. Some of the bigger stars need to step up and fight mosley!
