Alexander vs. Maidana in March?

By Eric Thomas: According to the latest boxing news, World Boxing Council light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (19-0, 12 KO’s) and the WBA interim light welterweight title holder knockout artist Marcos Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s) could be meeting up for a fight in an HBO televised fight for March 2010, according to Boxing Talk. If this bout comes off this would be an excellent fight with two different contrasting styles.

On one hand you have Alexander, a skilled boxer puncher who likes to fight on the inside and who has good hand speed and power. And with Maidana, you have a fighter with incredible power who is at his best at close range where he is very dangerous. Alexander, 22, has the better overall boxing skills, but is still very young and developing as a fighter. He stopped British fighter Junior Witter in the 8th round in August.

Maidana, 26, stopped top light welterweight contender Victor Ortiz in the 6th round in June. Maidana was knocked down in the 1st and 2nd round, and Ortiz was dropped in the 1st and the 6th. In Maidana’s last bout, he stopped a badly overmatched William Gonzalez in the 3rd round on November 21st.

This fight would come down to whether or not Alexander could stay away and avoid getting hit with too many of Maidana’s bombs. Unless Alexander has a chin made of granite like Andriy Kotelnik, he’ll have problems if he tries to fight on the inside against Maidana.
