What will Pacquiao do if Cotto beats him?

pac544By Liam Santiago: On November 14th Manny Pacquiao will face the biggest test of his life. He will step up to face the huge punching warrior, Miguel Cotto. The Pacquiao camp seem to be looking past Cotto already. Already they are eyeing up a date to fight Floyd Mayweather. Do they believe Cotto poses no threat? The Puerto Rican star will not be weight drained and he certainly won’t have the disadvantage of having Mayweather Snr in his corner.

However, lets just imagine the Pacquiao steam train gets de-railed on November 14th and Miguel Cotto wins, maybe by knock out, what does Pacquiao do then? Would he still chase a fight with Mayweather? Surely, Mayweather would want to face Cotto. If Pacquiao loses he will no longer be the big money draw. Who will want to watch him fight? Boxing fans may learn that Pacquiao has been slightly over rated.

If worst comes to worst for the Filipino man in Vegas, there is always the possibility of a Hatton rematch. Every boxing fan world wide understands that that was not the Ricky Hatton we all know that got knocked out by Pacquiao. Hatton peaked three weeks prior to that fight and his trainer, Floyd Mayweather Snr, destroyed his mental focus before the fight. Anyone who knows the slightest thing about boxing will understand that, come fight night, 90% of your preparation must be mental. Only 10% of what you have done inn training counts. Yes, you must be totally physically prepared, but, on fight night it is all down to metal focus, and Hatton did not have that.

So, how would a Hatton rematch end up? Would Hatton end up knocking Pacquiao out like two other unheard of fighters have already done? Or would Pacquiao do what he has already done to the Hitman? Who knows? Another possible opponent is Juan Manuel Marquez, who many believe has beaten Pacquiao twice, although the judges gave it to pacquiao. Among the list of names is Amir Khan.

Khan was offered to fight Pacquiao before the Cotto deal was signed but the Bolton man turned it down. I can not see Khan beating Pacquiao as he can not take a punch. Pacquiao is not a big puncher but you do not need to be to knock Khan out. I believe the best road for Pacquiao to take if Cotto can beat him is a Hatton rematch. Then, maybe at last Pacquiao can cement his legacy, without leaving behind so many questions.

If Manny losses to Miguel, there are still many filipino pound-for-pound champions in line. Younger, faster, and sharper than today’s pound-for-pound champions.

The future pound-for-pound champions are mostly filipinos.

  • yadadadookie says:

if, and i mean IF, pacquiao loses, then he should probably finish off JMM once and for all. I am so pumped, yet so scared. two of my fave boxers today pac and cotto….pac is my dude and i’ll be rooting for him, but i like cotto and i KNOW what he CAN do.

  • pisTOLPete says:

    Cotto (W) PacMan (L)

  • Pacquiao Cotto 24/7 says:

Hey, are you sure manny is not a big puncher. Manny is not just big puncher but also a Knock Out Artist so why question pacquiao’s capability to box. Let just wait and see how cotto will down by pacquia’s poer left hook.

  • julz says:

ill get manny to smash your face and let everybody knows whos the big puncher,,lol

  • Manuel Perez says:

TheDude, i’ll suck yourz if you suck mine?

  • TheDude says:

Is Manny gonna cry like a girl if he loses like he did when Morales did him in the first fight? Let’s go Cotto!

  • How did you say that Pacquiao is not a big puncher? Even Pacquiao is a little man but he can KNOCKED YOU OUT dude! Have you watched every fights Manny Pacquio? Almost Pacquiao’s fights had scored KNOCK DOWNS his opponent bigger than him! There’ no chance to Hatton and Marquez to Pacquiao anymore. Better to retire like what De la hoya does.

  • sourpuss1 says:

If Manny loses, there’s no shame in that. He picked a fight with someone bigger than him in a boxing match, and a dangerous one at that.

I am a PAC FAN, however I do agree with on Manny being slightly overrated. Everything else on your article is bull sh*t.

  • Manuel Perez is Marquez nuthugger says:

I think if Cotto wins by KO…Mayweather will want to fight Mosley. He ran from Cotto and the rest of the elite welterweights. There plenty of fights for Pac to fight at the lower weights. JMM rematch, Edwin Valero, Tim Bradley, …

BS on the Hatton remark about peaking 3 weeks before the match. Being physically ready is not going to change Hatton’s style which made hittable.

  • liamita says:

ps – pacquiao is what phelps is to swimming or armstrong is to cycling – a legend.

  • liamita says:

dream on. pacquiao can never be beaten. he has already cemented his legacy as the greatest pound for pound fighter in history. pacquiao is what phelps or armstrong is to the americans. awesome!

  • jude says:

Pacman will still win against cotto or mayweather, because Pacman always acknowledges God, and God is with him. This is the secret to Pacman’s power and victories, other than his skill. This is what his opponents do not have. Remember, mayweather knockdown JM once, whereas Manny knockedout JM 3 times in the first round! Also, mayweather knocked out Hatton on the 6th round, and he is taller than Hatton, whereas pacman knockedout hatton on the 2nd round??? and pacman is smaller than hatton. Of course you can say that mayweather is much better. thats because he’s taller and bigger than pacman. but what if he is the same size as pacman?

  • Danny Washington says:

    Manny, stick to 135 & 140!!

  • Steve D. says:

Losing to Cotto is a possibility here, but if Manny loses, I see it no worse than a 12-round split decision. Cotto may be bigger and a heavy puncher, but judging by his latest fights, he tires after about 6 rounds and gets cut easily. If Manny can hold off Cotto for 6 rounds, then he should be able to step it up with more pressure and maybe open up a cut or two on the now-tired Puerto Rican and maybe forced a stoppage that way. I personally see a TKO victory for Manny in either Round 10 or 11. If Manny loses in a close fight, then there is always Marquez or Mosley still wanting a shot at the Pacman.

  • boxing fan#2 says:

i think if pac looses to cotto, pac will still fight maywheather.
The importantant thing is how he looses and if he wins, how he wins.

  • rain says:

if cotto beats pacquiao, pacquiao sucks

  • Anonymous says:

If 90 percent is mental, what they play chess?

  • 2ne1 says:

what will happen, then they would want a rematch, cauze just like what happen with him and morales.

  • Hawaiian Man says:

Manny will take a long vacation..and enjoy his wealth with family….then get back to acting & Nike endorsements……easy money he deserves……….aloha

  • ding says:

I think Pacquiao will want to get a rematch with Cotto if he loses competitively. Or maybe a rematch with Marquez would be viable since that is the fight many fans would like to see. That is the best thing Manny would do if he losses. And I think this is not far fetched.
Your idea of Hatton being not mentally prepared for the fight with Manny was true. He was too overconfident at that time. Even in the 24/7 Hatton showed signs by downgrading Pacquiao style when they were watching Manny’s video. I hate to say this but Manny’s additional strength does not come from him but from his opponent who always underestimates his capacity as a boxer.
As JMM said to Larry Merchant,in the 1st round of their first fight he was too overconfident that he attacked Manny because he thinks Manny is an easy opponent only to find himself seconds later being knockdown 3 times. This is the same with David Diaz who thought Manny’s speed was not a problem. Also Oscar who thought he could outbox and overpower Manny.
So for Cotto to be effective, should try to be like JMM in their 2nd fight, although Manny won, many thinks JMM is the winner. With a lot of defense and careful offense Miguel would, I think, fare well but if not, and his thinking of pride being a Boricua warrior then another feather in the cap of the little brown bomber would ensue.

  • J says:

Pacquiao fans are blind and foolish, a Hatton rematch is definetely needed, I’m not saying he cant beat hatton again but it certainly wont be as easy, when Hatton showed glimpses of himself in the 2nd round he was overpowering manny a great deal. He should reunite with Billy Graham and go on a rocky style comeback!

  • Clubber Lang says:

If wacky packy loses, he will fight the weakest welter for a 7th belt. This guy isnt messing around— HE WANTS THAT BELT NO MATTER WHAT. Berto could get the luckiest payday…
    .

  • ZKO says:

Pac would drop in weight and fight Marquez for the 140 lbs title… still making big $$$

  • yarayt says:

and if pacquiao beats cotto means no more liam santiago articles!

  • justin says:

pacquiao got KOed when he was still 16/17… he wasn’t that good yet. but now he’s trained by Roach, he has never been KOed. SO STFU!!!

  • js says:

Blacklisted??!! I tried to write a thoughtful comment about this fight and keep finding that my “comment has been blocked based on the blog owner’s blacklist settings”

Is it because I used the words “Pacquiao” and “can” in the same sentence? Or maybe because I recognized that both fighters have something to contribute and that neither will leave the ring with any less, regardless of who wins.

Can these writers talk about anything other than how much they hate Pacquiao? I’d like to read about boxing for a change.

  • bob james says:

although he has done well for himself, pacquiao IS overated and will most likely lose to Cotto, who is not only the bigger man, but clearly the more skilled fighter.

  • Sir A. Ulo says:

Pretty Boy picks his fight just like Manny. The deference is that Pretty Boy runs around the ring while PacMan goes toe to toe… except this time with Cotto.

  • jhon foreman says:

Before u predict all of u boxing expert u need to watch Cotto fight in UTube and dont believe, u need to see. Believing is the same thing as theory. They say cotto is slow and Pacman is fast. Do u think that sab judah,Mosley, maliggnani are slow compare to Packman. If Cotto beat this slow moving boxer i guest u were right. If Cotto could take a punch to Clottey and Margarito which is a welterweight what is the posibility that he could not take a punch from lightweight.I guest thats a hard question. So u can predict what percentage of IQ u have on that hard question mr. boxing expert.

  • vrodz says:

I read in another site that Mayweather has said that no matter if Pacquiao losses he still want him next. I have always said and believe that if Cotto wins there is no way in hell that MAyweather would get in the ring with him. Apparntly I am not mistaken.

  • brunner says:

if pac loses and does not get a rematch, he will be fighting mayweather, pac will agree on a lower split while mayweather will not have second thoughts coz he is only fighting smaller men, if this will not happen, he will fight valero or do a roy jones jr by moving up further to fight chavez jr or margarito but not a mosley. he will lose again in politics if he aligns with pres. gloria macapagal arroyo who is the most hated philippine president right now, i believe he will continue to fight

  • Bud_Wiser says:

What will Pacquiao do if Cotto beats him? He will cry. And all the Pacnuthuggers will hide in their hut for a year. Some of them will commit harakiri. No more reason to live for them. LoL.

  • Rau says:

Arthur S – The only thing that Hatton-Pacquiao rematch would be close to is a monster truck rally…and guess who’ll be trampled on by the 20ft wheels.

One thing I can say, should there be a rematch, Pacman to win by TKO on the 4th…and Hatton might just head straight towards the light that time around.

  • brunner says:

liam writes unbelievable analysis on pac coz it sells and draws a lot of controversy and gets the most reactions. he is in fact a pac fan

  • tj says:

    how bout fighting timothy bradley?

  • josh says:

Pac’s speed vs Cotto’s power. thats the deal. it will be a great fight. Alot more entertaining than the Mayweather vs Marquez fight. thats for sure people.

  • Arthur S says:

I think Manny will lose to Cotto and will have a rematch with Hatton, with a few to winning that and having a fight with Mayweather! Makes him the most money!! Also I believe if Hatton comes back and somehow this rematch happened, you’d see a much better Hatton and he may just surprise a lot of people/haters/doubters! Would be closer this time!! Watch this space…

  • liboraci says:

Liam it doesnt take a boxing expert to know that the image of Hatton lying motionless on top of that Tecate canvas effectively renders finality to the Pacquaio-Hatton episode.

  • pacman says:

LIAM santiago, have some common sense…

  • Sir A. Ulo says:

If Pacquiao wins… a brother of Perez and Santiago will grace this site…

If Pacquiao loses, he retire with his millions and play politics and the leeches around him will hopefully go away.

  • Hec says:

I stop reading when i got to this..”come fight night, 90% of your preparation must be mental. Only 10% of what you have done inn training counts” I still think the fight is going to come down to the best game plan and who can stick to it….

  • Sir A. Ulo says:

Perez and Santiago are one and the same… maybe twins.

  • GT says:

Did Hatton write this? Or the leader of his fan club. Get real.

  • Chris Kelly says:

Pacman not a big puncher? Only 10 percent of what you do in training matters on fight night? Another demolishon of Hatton would cement his legacey? Mayweather fight Cotto (instead of Mosley) if Pacman loses? Explain Liam PLEASE !!!

  • Philip H. Anselmo says:

    HE’D LOSE. whaddayouthink?
    BACK AT YOU BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    PA

  • chaz says:

im a huge hatton fan pac man destroyed him no excuses he lost santiago end ov move on

  • Eric says:

If Pacquiao loses to Cotto, the most logical next fight would be a re-match with Juan Manuel. I have no idea who would even be interested in seeing a Pacquiao/Hatton rematch. That would be equivalent to seeing a rematch between Mike Tyson and Michael Spinks.

  • LIAM says:

THE WRITER HAS A MENTAL LAPSED!!! NEEDS THE PACMAN’S BIG PUNCH… INORDER HIS INSANITY MAY BRING BACK TO NORMAL… E!

  • boxxing fan says:

most definatley not a hatton rematch no one wants to see that. boxers sign certain clauses in the agreements before fights and one of them is if a knock out comes before a certain round a rematch is out of the picture remember hatton got knocked out in the 2nd why would anyone want to see a rematch id rather see a pac n de la hoya rematch before a hatton-pac rematch

  • RayP says:

First off, I do not believe Mayweather will fight Cotto after Cotto knocks out Pac Man. If Mayweather had wanted any part of Cotto he would have answered Jim Lampley’s question. Jim asked “Would you fight the winner of the Pac Cotto fight” Mayweather did his usual dancing and never answered.Had Mayweather been asked “Will you fight Manny if he beats Cotto” instead he would have said yes before lampley finished the question. Pac Man will retire and go into politics in his native country after Cotto beats him.

  • Ayaz malik says:

Very poor analysis the fight with hatton wasnt close enough to warrant a rematch, plus hatton is a shot fighter and for you to suggest a rematch he will be risking permenant damage. Everyone has to accept the old hatton is gone due to a wild lifestyle and drinking outside the ring, you cannot play with your body(ask Roy Jones. Pacman has speed and an awkward southpaw stand which Im afraid will deal with cotto. The biggest fight for manny will be Floyd Mayweather but I just feel floyd has too much all round skill and size for Manny and he could get stopped late by Mayweather.

  • Rich says:

A Hatton Rematch!!!?? No one in their right mind would want to see a Hatton rematch, unless they want to see Hatton get seriously hurt again.

  • guest says:

if that happens, he will keep his money and have fun! how about you liam? you wont have anything to write about if pacquiao loses! you’re just like manuela the brainless one…IDIOTS!!!!

  • Cotito_combate says:

Now that Pac has trouble catching up the training regimen and handling a lot of distractions, it is obvious the Pac has nothing to match with Cotto except his guts and sole belief.

So, to answer Liam’s question. Get ready. Pac will fight Santiago for an exhibition match.

  • jigs says:

liam has 39 days left in his career as a nonesense boxing writer, knocking out 80 percent of your opponents is not a big puncher?? thats insane liam, cotto will be another victim of pacmans power, you better find another job before nov 14…. well just a suggestion. why not apply for womens magazines? where u belong

  • ricky hurtman hatton says:

thank you very much your a genius…….your a good boxing analyst

  • Juan Manuel Marquez says:

    Thank you. Good article!!!

  • Manny Perez says:

Win or lose, Pacquiao will always be one of the best P4P fighters winning 6 titles in 6 diff division. . . something that Mayweather hasn’t done . . . so quit bashing Pacquiao and quit finding excuses for Hatton, and the rest of his victims!

  • JayJay says:

The fight can go either way, if Cotto looses the fight, his boxing career will be over.

  • JMM says:

JMM is lodged deep up Liam Santiago arsss…

  • Vic says:

Why would people watch a rematch with hatton. Rematches are made because the first match was competitive. Let me ask you this?… Was the first match with hatton a competitive 1? Answer is a big HELL NO! It was a blow out. Turns out your just another scribe without a clue.

  • fuego says:

ricky hatton would beat pacquiao if he was in right frame of mind. if only joe calzaghe was a welterweight he would bring pacquiao down to earth with a complete boxing lesson like jeff lacy fight

  • nepster says:

Tell Hatton that Pac’s not a big puncher. Dude can’t even watch the fight after 5 months…I doubt he’ll want to get in the ring with him again.

  • ALAN BOSWORTH says:

I NO WOT LIAM SANTIAGO WILL DO IF PACQUIAO BEATS COTTO…..QUIT….WITH…THESE…ARTICLES…
