What will Matthew Hatton do when N’Dou beats him?

hatton-matthew4342229By Liam Santiago: If Matthew Hatton was a betting man, and he seriously believed he has some kind of chance of becoming a world champion on November 13th, I imagine he would be inclined to put a few quid on himself beating Lovemore N’Dou, with the odd for him to win at 9/4. Recently an article was posted on this website about the amount of world titles currently floating around and which ones are genuine ‘titles’. The fact that Matthew Hatton is fighting for a world title sums up the state of boxing right now.

There was once a time when winning a world title was such an incredible achievement. To be a world champion you had to have everything, you had to be the real deal. So, why is Matthew Hatton fighting for a world title? On the domestic scene he is ranked 5th by boxing monthly, below Craig Watson who beat him on a landslide points win. So, if a fighter can not succeed at domestic level, why put them in a world title fight? Don’t the fighter’s above Hatton at domestic level deserve the same kind of treatment?

In my opinion, the odds for Hatton to win are too small. I don’t give the younger brother of Ricky Hatton a chance. Although, N’Dou is thirty eight, he is world class operator. Not one of the best champions, or even close, but he is still miles and miles above Hatton in terms of class. Anyone who has ever watched the Manchester man fight will realise he lacks talent. The heart and desire might be there, but without ability and talent, he is wasting his time. I predict a points win for N’Dou. Hatton is simply too stationary. He will be a sitting target for N’Dou all night.

So, what happens then. If Hatton loses, will we hear stories about how the referee was to blame or Hatton’s trainer. If Hatton loses here, he will probably have another crack at the domestic scene. I can’t see anyone there in the top five he could be competitive with.

Although Hatton can give his best shot at winning the IBO world title, it is a disgrace to boxing, to former world champions and current world champions that such a fighter can fight for such a prize. Of course, the Ricky Hatton fans will come out of the woodwork and defend the Hatton name. They will claim he deserves this shot and has finally got his lucky break. However, he has not earned this lucky break. Since losing to Craig Watson he has beaten Scott Woolford, Ben Tackie, who was miles past his best when Ricky Hatton fought him, Ted Bami and Ernesto Zepeda. Does that warrant a title shot. Maybe it is just me, but I seriously do not think this bout should be happening.
