Vitali Klitschko vs. Kevin Johnson on December 12th – Boxing News
By Dave Lahr: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will be returning to action on December 12th against number #6 ranked WBC heavyweight contender Kevin Johnson (22-0-1, 9 KO’s) at the PostFinance Arena, in Berne, Switzerland. Klitschko, 38, is coming off an impressive 10th round stoppage of previously unbeaten heavyweight Chris Arreola on September 26th, at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles.
By choosing Johnson as an opponent, Vitali is likely not going to interest many of the mainstream boxing fans because Johnson isn’t well known and not considered to be a dangerous puncher like Arreola. It will be interesting to see if the American cable networks – HBO or ESPN – will decide to show Klitschko’s bout against Johnson. HBO is mostly interested in putting on fights that they see as competitive and ones that will interest the casual boxing fan.
A fight between Vitali and Johnson would seem to be anything but competitive. And with Johnson having little power, it’s hard to see how he’ll have any chance against the towering hard punching Klitschko. Vitali may have been better off seeking out the number #7 top contender in the WBC Odlanier Solis instead.
Solis, a former 2004 Olympic heavyweight Gold Medalist, has the hand speed and punching power to make it interesting while it lasts with Klitschko. Solis may be a tad overweight at 6’1” 271, but he would be more of a threat to Klitschko than Johnson.
Despite being four and half inches shorter than Klitschko, Johnson will have a two inch reach advantage over Klitschko in their fight. If only Johnson had some power to go along with his slight reach advantage. He won’t be able to jab or slap his way to a decision against the power punching Vitali. That’s the problem with Johnson. He tends to slap too much with his punches and doesn’t have much punching power.
His work rate is also a problem nowadays. Johnson doesn’t throw a lot of punches like he used to when he was younger. Johnson’s weight has gone steadily up since 2007, a time when Johnson weighed in at a slender 229. In his last fight, Johnson weighed 246 against Devin Vargas and looked chunky. Hopefully, Johnson trims off the fat off his frame for his bout against Klitschko because he’s going to need to be in top shape if he’s to have any hopes of lasting 12 rounds against him.
I don’t give Johnson much of a chance of surviving for long against Klitschko, not without any power to speak of. Basically all of Johnson’s opponents during his six year pro career have been B and C class fighters. Perhaps his best opponent to date is Devin Vargas, a former amateur star with only 17 fights under his belt at the time that Johnson fought him.

K. Johnson should quit boxing if he is going to represent the US and not even put up a fight. He does not have the heart to be a champion. What’s the point of showboating and acting as if your opponent can’t hurt you if you do nothing but act like a sponge and sit there and obsorb all his punches. Kevin Johnson = a fighter that does not fiight. Obviously he should not get another championship fight ever. He just sat there and watched his chance to be a champion hit him in the face. What a let down.
Lahr – you are stupid – sorry!
lewis could be outboxed and came in heavier when he thought he would have to resort to punching rather than boxing….see his trainers remarks on the subject…he described lewis as clumsy and he often needed to pull out fights by turning it into a war…he was an ave boxer with a slow jab and ave footwork…his size got him where he is…i see him as equal to vitali. hence not that great….
tired of the excuses for lewis in the vitali fight. he was scheduled to fight who most thought was the 2nd best heavy at the time and had endless experience in big fights….vitali was inexperienced, and was scheduled to fight a very weak opp. he was also cut, which was the result of a glancing blow—luck….and he only got back into the fight because vitali couldnt see. if he had come back and beaten viali i would seriously have considered him for top 3….but ducking that rematch as far i am concerned put him outside the top 10 as he was fought to a standstill and generally getting beaten by vitali, a fighter i dont see as all that good….it ruined his legacy.
Lennox hadn’t prepared adequately for Vitaly and struggled early on.However,Lennox was in the ascendancy and controlling the fight at the time of stoppage.Lewis who have kayoed him or even blinded him within the next round or two at most.A rematch would have been a formality for Lennox who would have taken him seriously and always performed better second time around. It frustrates me when people do not give Lewis the credit he deserves-he had all the tools and only lost through lack of preparation or concentration.Lewis could be destructive or scientific and was superior to Klitschko-in my opinion he should be regarded among the top five heavies of all time
I like David Tua. Let the guy climb back up the ranks, get some paydays. I just cant see him having any chance against Vitali. How many inches is he giving up in height, like 9?
Should be an easy fight, but I might go anyway since I live nearby. Hopefully they can get a decent undercard. Also, for the record, Lennox’s TKO of Vitali was due to an injury that Lennox caused. Namely, smashing him in the eye so many times that he probably would have ended his career if the fight went any longer. Vitali may have won the early rounds, but it was clear that he was going to be KO’d. He couldn’t see Lennox’s right coming anymore and it would have been brutal. Easy decision for the ring doctor.
One would be a fool to bet against the klitchkos.. Also, Tua winning against Vitali? Get the hell out of here, there’s no way this guy would even come close to even winning one round against either one…
Lennox? Are you kidding. He won the fight against Vitali on a TKO due to an injury. Vitali was beating Lennox Lewis. Lennox immediately retired after that fight because he knew a rematch would have been his downfall. TUA has no chance against any of the K brothers. No chance at all!
Klitschko? A hungry Tua would knock out either of those bums. Yea, tall opponents have always been awkward for Tua, but Klitsccko just do not have the skills of a Lennox to keep Tua at bay. If the dog is hungry enough, he will bite.
Heavyweight boxing needs Tua.
thats true. i agree with doctor
This will round of the year for Vitali nicely. Johnson is absolutely no danger to Vitali, who still will take the fight seriously.
He will be looking to finish Haye’s career next year win or lose against Valuev.Vitali simply cant be beaten by anybody I can see on the horizon.
Don’t even mention Tua in the same sentence that would just be target practice round after round until somebody stops it. Vitali is really enjoying himself he is the King after all, and long may he reign.
