Tua vs. Meehan in January? – Boxing News
By Jim Dower: Heavyweight David Tua (50-3-1, 43 KO’s) could be facing 6′5″ heavyweight contender Kali Meehan (35-3, 29 KO’s) in January 2010, according to the Nzherald. Tua, 36, recently came off of an impressive 2nd round knockout of Shane Cameron earlier this month on October 3rd in New Zealand. This was Tua’s first fight in two years and he looked very impressive like he had gone back into a time warp to 2000 when Tua was at the top of his game and challenging for the heavyweight world title against champion Lennox Lewis.
A fight against Meehan would get a lot of attention in the U.S. and do a lot to rebuild Tua’s image with the American public. Tua has done little since losing a title shot to Lewis in November 2000. Tua fought continuously after that fight against mostly B level fighters and had problems with his weight. Instead of fighting in the mid 230s, which was clearly Tua’s best weight during his career, he began to fight in the upper 240s and looking much slower.
At the same time, Tua’s explosive combinations went away and he became a one punch at a time fighter. Tua always had great power, but he got by in the earlier part of his career by his ability to throw blazing fast combinations. This was how he got many of his knockouts. For whatever reason, that went away at the same time that Tua began to come into his fights at a heavier weight.
Tua’s next fight will be in one of the following locations: Hawaii, Brazil, New York or Berlin, Germany. It’s unclear why Tua’s management would want for him to fight in Germany, but perhaps it would be an option to take advantage of the huge crowds that are generated over there for boxing matches. It would be a great opportunity for Tua if WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev was able to beat David Haye on November 7th. Who knows? Tua could find himself as a potential opponent for the big 7-foot Valuev.
At only 5′10″, the size differences between Tua and the huge 320 pound German based Valuev would be astronomical. However, it would be a great fight and one in which Tua would have an excellent chance of winning if he could somehow reach Valuev’s chin with his big punches.

David Tua is Unstoppable right now, he is at his best did you see the way he dismantled the mountain warrior? if so then most fighters should be afraid to hop in the ring against the Tuaminator he has everything a KO boxer has!
SOLID CHIN
GOOD HEAD MOVEMENT
HARD LEFT HOOK
SOLID OVERHAND RIGHT
AND AND AVERAGE HAND SPEED.
Tua has never been floored in his boxing career, i give it up to Meehan if he steps in the ring with the raging BEAST TUAMINATOR!
Tua vs Haye that will be the fight to watch,Haye hasnt been tested by a good boxer,so it will a good fight for Tua to take and then one of the Klitcho brothers. Please someone make it happened.
why david’s been in mothballs is a funny question.he will beat arreola by knockout.the only fighter who comes close to be as boring as ruiz was lewis.but lennox was a smart fighter with all that.ruiz was a bum.funny how a bum can become a champion if there are enough mexicans to pay for tickets.klitchko does not have the stamina to take on david although he’s a good runner awayer in the ring.i think david would catch up with him then good bye charlie.
david tua wil kill anyone who dears chanlagnes him even friday.friday wil b knock out in 1min 36sec frist round
can anyone in the heavy weight division last 12 rounds without taking one on the chin???? if so than you may have a chance against david tua. if not than god help you
history lesson#1 tua killed ruiz in seconds in my eyes ruiz in one of the most boring heavy weights out there going to a hugging/dancing decisions in his wins. tua vs the arreola or the kingpin? would be the only decent fight ot there or even haye if he gets by valuev?
John Ruiz vs. David Tua
whats up boxing fans he wants a big man John’Razor’ Ruiz is the man to fight to get
to Valuev.
The Heavy Weight Division has lost its soul..
The Klitchko brothers are tremendous deserving champion fighters but they lack fierce entertaining KO mongrelism!
I mean these guys can box and KO their opponents but their fight plan & style are too strategic which if you were a coach you’d want from your boxer but in saying so they make for a real boring fight.
We the public want to see an explosion in the opening rounds..hell bring back the 1st Round KOs!
Gone was the decade of Heavyweight brutality and the only fighter fighting today in my opinion that can restore that is the
‘Tuaminator’ David Tua
His return fight after a 2 year lay off was devastatingly amazing with a 2nd Round KO also two drop downs in the 1st against World Heavy Weight ranked WBO pan pacific.etc title holder & up and comer Shane’MountainWarrior’Cameron who is no push over and easy beat I tell you that.
Arreola vs Tua
will definitely be a fight the public will want to see as both fighters will go toe to toe and trade super blows which I believe will only ever end up in with one result and that’s the victor winning by KO.
Tua I know will be too tremendously strong for Arreola but Arreola has heart and will come raging to fight but my only concern is his corner getting in the way of the fight and throwing in the towel!!!
KELLY said > “David Tua did very well against the tough Shane Cameron”
no he didnt, TUA DESTROYED CAMERON
AND TUA WILL DESTROY crying baby chris areola
Tua is a freak of nature ( in a good way )
Tua should have been 2 time WBA champion,
why is john ruiz 2 time champion ?
it doesnt make sense,
he has sooo much talent, its unbelievable
David Tua did very well against the tough Shane Cameron, but still needs several more fights to get the rust off.
I think he should fight steady for the next year before going for a title shot.
Like many fans, I would enjoy seeing him win a heavyweight title at last.
