Should Calzaghe comeback and smash Froch?

cal7287By Jamie Hooper: Since Carl Froch appeared on the scene I have never been sure what to make of him. He got a lot of boxing fans back up when he was calling out Calzaghe. I don’t think that chasing a calzaghe bout was a smart move for Froch. 1. Because Calgazhe would win hands down and 2. Calzaghe was in the home straight of his career and was looking for big money fights not domestic.

He must have known that a Calzaghe fight wouldn’t happen and should have been smart enough to realize that bad mouthing Calzaghe would only adversely affect his popularity among the British fans.

So the super six comes along and gives Froch probably the best opportunity he could possibly have to establish himself as a super star or at least set him self in the best possible position to become one. There is only one problem though. He isn’t good enough.

I don’t really believe that froch won the fight against Andre Dirrell. More that Dirrell didn’t do enough to take the title. He looked very exposed against Taylor too.

Before the super six draws to a close he has the likes of Kessler to get past. Normally I would say that Froch wouldn’t stand a chance but Kessler hasn’t looked the same since Calzaghe. I’m left wondering if Froch is one of those lucky fighters that just gets the right fights at the right time.

What if he wins the super six. Do we say well done Froch you are a super star. The P4P title is within your grasp. When we talk of the best British fighters of all time your name is right up there.

Personally if he wins I say its time for Calzaghe to make a comeback. A lot of boxing fans and experts will say a comeback for Calzaghe would be a bad thing. Why risk a defeat and spoil your unbeaten record. The answer to that is, he wont get beat. Calzaghe hasn’t been in retirement long enough to atrophy. Besides all that dancing keeps you in shape.

I truly believe if Froch wins the super six , Calzaghe will take the froch fight. And I have no doubt Froch will come unstuck.

Calzaghe should hang up the dancing shoes and dust the gloves off. As there could be an opportunity for a domestic barnstormer.

    cobra would beat froch

  • Adam says:

Finally an article on this site that I agree with! …But as some people have already said, Kessler and Abraham are more than capable of crushing Carl Froch. If a miracle happened…then Yes, Calzaghe should definitely come out of retire to whup this guy silly! It’d be easy money, and Froch would be very high profile byb then too. But there’s NO WAY that Froch will be able avoid losing to his next two opponents.

  • Jonny says:

Nice article Jamie. I think that Calzaghe would easily outbox Froch if he did come out of retirement but he shouldn’t.

He wouldn’t have much to gain by doing so. He’s beaten the best and Froch is great but not quite the “best”. I’m glad Froch won as Dirrell seemed to be spoiling too much for me although Froch was hardly innocent himself.

There seems to be a lot of divide in American / British opinion on this fight and I’m a Brit and gave it Froch but could have seen it go Dirrells way… especially if it was in America….

wgw what are you on about froch is rubbish he is the most over rated boxer in the world

  • big T says:

I love Carl but Joe would have boxed his head off, simply too good

  • dave foulkes says:

Joe come back to fight Fake>>>>Dream on Fake just got ruined by a smaller less experienced fighter…Joe would av destroyed him

  • WGW says:

Smash!!! you fool! I have so much respect for Carl Froch not because hes the greatest boxer but because hes got a big very big heart and wants to fight the best and only the best! Hes what boxing needs like the UFC guys who only wanna fight the best. Carl Froch the Brave

  • Martin says:

Calzaghe has nothing to prove and should/will not come back to fight Froch or anyone else.

Froch has the super six series to concentrate on and perhaps he may get the credit he deserves after performing well here. I think some of his critics forget that he’s unbeaten, has ducked noone and he did beat Taylor and Dirrell.

  • borisz64 says:

Carl Froch is much better than most people give him credit for!

  • flummex says:

Calzaghe would hammer Froch for 12 rounds even though Calzaghe would be well past his prime. Calzaghe has beaten better fighters by far. Froch is a plodder who keeps coming at you, but his last 3 fights have been narrow wins. I would like to see Froch and Bika fight or possibly a rematch with Pascal.

  • rIK says:

Lacy, Hopkins, Jones, Bika, Kessler….. Joe beat all of these and all of these would beat Froch. This is a silly debate…. Froch would get the Lacy treatment!!!!

i believe the outcome of carl against joe wouldn’t be as clear cut as every one thinks yes joe has fast hands good work rate and a good chin but carl has a good work rate a good chin and is heavy handed and joe has a tendency to stand and trade which would play into carls game and i think carl can match joe for his work rate and will bring the fight to him plus Carl’s hand speed isn’t as bad as some would have you believe its his foot work that lets carl down and joe isn’t as hard to hit as he once was i think joe would win but it will be a very hard fight and could still go either way but this is only my opinion

  • Simon M says:

no need for Calzaghe to come back, Kessler and Abraham will mash Froch up and then i believe this tournament will end Froch’s career

  • j lander says:

more anti froch comments, agree completely with doncaster boxing, nobody likes to fight froch,he has hurtfull power in both hands and a granite chin..calzagh can box yes,but he coudnt put away a fairy with his punches, never mind a warrior like foch..they dont like each other and calzagh could risk his health if he ever got in the ring with froch, which he wont as he likes fighting bums and pensioners……froch inside 7 brutal rounds if they ever did….

  • Mr Rich says:

Bika would destroy Froch. Im supprised he didnt get an invite into the super 6.

  • Anonymous says:

No such thing as a lucky fighter. If a guy wears the belt give him credit.Froch should forget about Joe and concentrate on the next opponent.Should Nigel benn come out of retirement to fight Joe, should Hagler come out of retirement to fight Benn. Different era’s for different fighters.Joe should do what Lennox Lewis has done and hang up the gloves for good and retire a true champion!!

  • MichaelW says:

no1jimmywilde your comment is bang on,

u understand the politics of boxing organisations.

  • Anonymous says:

unkansodoff, spot on.barry McGuigan even thort froch lost.and this is a guy who stands by frochs side on itv4.the sport is corrupt simple as.calzaghe wud of hammered froch, stay retired nothing 2 prove

  • Plumblbw says:

“ent even bovad” – Great use of the English language Nathan.

  • nathan says:

old news carl ent even bovad bou him now. carls world champ joe is an old man dancer

  • earthwormjim says:

speed kills and thats exactly what joe would do to froch. if joe can out box the best defensive fighter in hopkins he’d land his punches at will against froch. i predict froch would get the lacy treatment!!

  • Ukansodoff says:

No Calzaghe shouldnt come out of retirement to face Froch. I think Froch’s last 2 fights have shown why Calzaghe was right to ignore Froch and chase people like Hopkins and Jones Jr.

Froch was lucky against Taylor and if Dirrell hadnt been spooked in the middle rounds hed of lost that fight.

We dont need Clazaghe to come out of retiremtnet to beat him, hes guna be beaten at some point in this tournement, hes just not good enough.

  • se16 says:

should dirrel fight suger ray robinson no leave the man alone this site has gone backwards

  • mark f says:

Calzaghe would beat Froch but it would be on points and similar to the Kessler fight. Froch had every right to call out Joe though as he was the WBC’S mandatory and lost a year of his career playing the waiting game.

  • Paul Mason says:

Joe would smash froch into next week. His last 3 fights against bums has been a struggle. He doesnt deserve to fight the legend

  • Bill says:

it would be worth Joe’s trouble if he was still undefeated, but I think carl will take 2 losses during the super 6 so it wouldn’t make sense for joe, who I’m sure would give carl a proper thrashing

  • Anonymous says:

you think froch wins the super six? i guess you wrote this before the dirrell fight!

  • samo says:

and who wants to fight bika now?

  • No1JimmyWilde says:

DONCASTER calzaghe was made to fight manfredo jr by WBC cos the winner was goin to get taylor, but then taylor wanted 10 million for th fight. bika was a name in america and a good tune up fight for kessler, calzahge was unifying the division while froch was defending the british title, then he fought p4p rated no3 hopkins, while froch was still defending his title. its obvious that froch was trying to get a name off calzaghes back. calzaghe would outboxed him for 12 rounds. hes too adaptable, too fast and has got a solid chin

  • JD says:

Granted, should CF won the tournament it could be very lucrative for JC to come out of retirement. But, Froch is one of those fighters no one likes to fight. He just plugs along, doesn’t mind getting hit, and had a very good chin. Add to this his tendency to brawl and roughhouse and you have an opponent that makes for an ugly and difficult fight.

  • doncaster boxing says:

when carl was ranked number 3 joe had his chance to fight carl but bottled it by fighting manfredo then bika then when carls number 1 he moves up to fight two men 14 year and 9 years older than carl.that to me says calzaghe didnt fancy the job.

  • Lowell Boxing says:

No. Joe is bad for boxing. Fighting bums. He is better off retired. I dont wanna see him fight .

  • ty b says:

we dont need joe to comeback wait till he faces a dirrell again KO

  • Hank Lamak says:

Joe should come and slap carl silly!
