Roach: “He’s [Pacquiao] getting hit too much”

By Manuel Perez: It seems as if Manny Pacquiao is having some problems with his sparring in the early portion of his training camp in Baguio City, in the Philippines. According to an article in the sports.inquirer, Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach had this to say about Pacquiao: “He’s [Pacquiao] getting hit too much.” Ah, that’s not good news for Pacquiao fans because he’s still only sparring and hasn’t even faced Miguel Cotto yet.
I wonder why Roach is bringing in Henry? Could it be that the other sparring partners aren’t big enough to mimic Cotto’s size and power? Urabano Antillon, one of the sparring partners that Roach is using, is a lightweight and only 5’7″. I still can’t understand why Roach chose to bring Antillon to camp. If Pacquiao were to be fighting a lightweight or a super featherweight, I could understand it, but he’s going to be facing a much bigger welterweight in Cotto and Antillon seems like someone who is ill equipped to prepare Pacquiao for what he’ll be facing.
Aside from the sparring partner issue, I’m really worried now about how Roach is saying that Pacquiao is getting hit too much. That’s not a good sign. I don’t know what Pacquiao can do in this case. He may very well be in trouble.
Porter wouldn’t predict a winner between Cotto and Pacquiao. That’s also not a good sign. Usually, people, whether sparring partners or not, when asked about a certain fighter, they freely admit who they think will win the fight. Porter hasn’t done this for some reason. Could it be that he doesn’t want to hurt Pacquiao’s feelings by picking Cotto? By now, Porter must know how much Pacquiao has in him and whether or not he can beat a talented fighter like Cotto.
The fact that Porter isn’t picking anyone to win the fight, could be a sign that he sees Pacquiao losing the fight on November 14th? Pacquiao has had things easy in his last two bouts, beating Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya, two popular fighters but who appeared to be on the downside of their careers.
Cotto, however, is still fighting really well and although he got taken out last year by Mexican Antonio Margarito in an 11th round stoppage, Cotto has come back since then with two wins over Michael Jennings and Joshua Clottey. Cotto looked good in both fights and back to his pre-Margarito form.
It might have been a little bit better for Cotto to have another two fights under his belt before facing Pacquiao to ensure that there are no lingering effects from his knockout loss to Margarito that could be a problem. But Pacquiao picked him out of the pack, bypassing Shane Mosley and Paul Williams.

Those of you who thought Oscar & Ricky Hatton are wash-ups…then why put their reputation at risk with a fight with Manny (Money)…These two living legends are still quality fighters if they continue to train & work as hard as Manny, both fighters were able to hit Manny with Solid shots but Manny is able to withstand & regroup better than anyone i’ve seen. No one can defense against the Speed Of Light…….aloha

flipinoy, apart from his last 3 fights and Morrales 3, Manny is always getting hit.
Thats the fighter he is, take a couple to be able to give a couple and usually his couple are enough to have his opponent think twice.
Cotto is top notch, at his peak and a true hooker to the body. Manny is top notch, at his peak and the fastest fighter on the planet. I say don’t worry, come fight night both will be in awesome shape, both have the skills to win and win big and the styles make for what i think will be our generations Hagler vs Hearns.
Sparring isnt the real thing, its the place where things get tried and then worked on. In his prime Mike Tyson had a few stories from training camps that he’d been put on his arse. Didnt help most opponents come fight night.
Pacman to be put on the floor twice before stopping Cotto around rounds 9-11. Action from start to finish, swinging one way then the other, few clinches and alot of blood. I just hope Pacman see’s this as his wake up call if he thinks he’s good/big enough to step up to Pretty Boy’s platform. Finish off Marquez and then spank Mosley before calling it a day.

What about news on the latest sparring between Porter and Pacquiao; “Porter was simply overwhelmed in the ring that his father and trainer, Ken Porter, couldn’t hide his frustration, considering that just two days ago it was the 2007 National Golden Gloves champion who was all over Pacquiao.”

Facts are clear. Cotto is younger, heavier, bigger, punch harder, smarter and knows defense better than Pac. Cotto’s counter is a key KO Pac and Roach is well aware of this bold fact.
Pac is still cannot get over his head with his previous wins with zombie delahoya and defenseless Hatton. That’s his only weapon in believing he can beat Cotto.

I wouldn’t get too worked up over this story. There were stories about Lamont Peterson working over Floyd Mayweather in training camp for the Marquez fight.
No fighter wants to peak 6 weeks before the fight.
Team Pacquiao will continue to work and Manny will be ready on November 14. As will Cotto. It should be a great fight.

This is a great article but I have read the original version of this one and there’s alot not said ” Like the fact the Porter have said he wouldn’t bet against the pacman” and Yes Roach have said he’s getting hit alot but “it’s normal cuz he always starts slow in his first 2 weeks of camp” I’m still taking Cotto by stoppage no matter what this article or the original says!

Pac has poor defensive skills. He usually attacks opponents using his speed to cover his pathetic defense. That’s the reason he was outboxed by Marquez in their two fights because Marquez timed him to counterpunch Pac.
Facing Cotto who is a hard puncher, Pac won’t be able to survive. He will be KO’ed.
Mayweather will toy around and beat Pac badly in 12 rounds. Pac is easier to beat than Marquez because Pac has weak defense.
All Pac knows is to brawl.

I can’t wait for the fight. I don’t know which one I am more excited about, the fight itself or the possibility that when Pacquiao wins ( one of the 3 possibilites ), Mr Manuel Perez will not write anymore. I am a Pacquiao fan but I think it’s going to be close. I wish Pac wins not just because I am rooting for him but that Mr. Perez will not write anymore. It’ll be like winning the lottery twice in one day. That is if Mr. Perez is a man of his word. He deserves the benefit of the doubt. We’ll see.

So he is not in a position to make comparison. Also was he asked? It was reported that he said what impressed him most about manny is his speed. Pacquiao is faster Porter. So if Manny is only 40%, wait till he is 100%.
Watch porter’s fight on Youtube. He is bulit like Cotto but is very active and faster than Cotto. In fact, he fights like Pacquiao.

Porter, with jet-lag and not even on top physical shape is out-speeding, out-muscling and dominating Pacman.

I’m really hoping Pacquiao loses but having trouble with sparring partners this early on really doesn’t mean anything. You want your fighter to be facing the toughest opposition in sparring, not steamrolling over bums. With that said I think pacman has finally bitten off more than he can chew, cotto is hungrier than ever for this fight because he will finally be able to erase the shadow of margarito.
Sorry, my last comment should say “like a title is at stake” not “steak”. A steak may very well be at stake, but that’s not what I meant.
Roach has said worse things about what he’d like Manny to improve on during camp, that’s why they have an 8 week training camp, to improve things that need improving…it’s far too early to get worried about this or that…and btw, Antillon is a beast, him and Manny go at it during sparring like a title is at steak. Pacquiao had problems with Antillon when they prepared for the ODLH and Hatton fights, but it brings out the best in him. That’s why they have him there.

Too many contadictions coming out of the Pac Man camp. During the photo sessions a few weeks ago Manny looked kinda puffy. This we saw with our own eyes. Then, Roach claims that Manny looks great early on after a week and a half of training and chances his prediction to a KO of Cotto. Now Porter smacks Manny up and Roach says Manny is about 40%. IS Roach losing his marbles or is he purposely trying to fog things up? One thing we can be sure of is that Manny looked out of shape and I do not see how after 1 1/2 weeks his fighter was already in shape.
