Rhodes defeats Moore – Boxing Results
By William Mackay: 32-year-old Ryan Rhodes (43-4, 29 KO’s) pulled off a major upset last night when he stopped champion Jamie Moore (32-4, 23 KO’s) in the 7th round to capture his EBU (European) light middleweight title at the Bolton Arena, Bolton, Lancashire. Moore, 30, was in control of the fight for five rounds, but suddenly seemed to gas out in the 6th round and start taking punishment from the quicker southpaw Rhodes. In the 7th, Rhodes tagged an unsuspecting Moore with a big right hook that sent him down on the canvas. Moore got up and continued to fight back fairly well for the next half a minute.
Moore fought well until the 6th round. Up until that time, he was landing the harder shots and staying on top of Rhodes to try and minimize his movement. But where Moore made the mistake was by standing directly in front of Rhodes, not covering up and not respecting Rhodes’ power. It was as if Moore was thinking pure offense and not giving a care for defending himself.
Moore was wide open all night by standing right in front of Rhodes and he rarely blocked anything in the fight, other than with his face. Sooner or later, I knew it was going to catch up to Moore because he’s just not defensively proficient and wasn’t focusing on trying to avoid Rhodes’ shots. Moore’s poor stamina seems to be a factor caused by his string of early knockout wins dating back to 2007 in a 11th round stoppage win over Andrew Facey in October 2007.
Since that time, the longest fight that Moore has had was a 5th round stoppage win over Esau Herrera in May 2008. Rhodes really didn’t do much in the fight other than staying upright and fighting enough rounds until Moore tired out on his own and was vulnerable. Moore’s absent defense made him even more vulnerable because he was just standing there with a hit me sign on his face as he stood in close to Rhodes.
Moore was firing away with lefts and rights while in close, but his punches had little effect on Rhodes, who mostly kept on the move, showing different angles for his shots and making Moore use his legs to move follow him. Rhodes looked like he was having fun against Moore and even through Moore was winning most of the rounds, you could see that it was tiring him out having to move so much.
The win gives Rhodes the WBU title and may possibly open some doors for a World Boxing Council light middleweight eliminator bout against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the future. I would favor Rhodes in that fight.

ROOTS you obviously didnt see when Small was stopped by Bradley Price, he decimated his face, although Small has matured more, he has fought no-one apart from Matthew Hall which i do give him credit for but Rhodes has just as many tricks up his sleeve as Small (he is a product of the Ingle gym) ad if he put his punches together on Smalls chin it would be game over.
SMALL WILL KNOCK HIM OUT IF THEY MEET,BUT I THINK RHODES WILL CHICKEN OUT OF THIS ONE ALSO.
Superb perfomance from Rhodes – great to see him back in serious form. Stupendous finish – read it just right.
MARK F,i disagree smash small into next year.
Great performance from Rhodes, it would be great if he got another crack at the title, he’s been around the block and fought at the highest level and I feel he can still be champ, if he does it would be great if he made his first defence against Anthony Small and smashed him into next week.
Billiant fight!
I agree Rhodes would have a good chance against Chavez Jr.. Hes definitely not cut from the same floth as his dad..Rhodes deserves it. Good performance.
Excellent fight proves boxing is still very much alive! I would def fancy rhodes against JCC. I think he is very overated and rhodes would teach him a thing or two.
Rhodes showed real maturity during the fight, holding a tight defence while Moore punched himself out and then picking his punches superbly in the 7th to win the fight.
I only wish I’d bothered to back Rhodes midway through the fight when his odds went out to 12-1.
Moore intimated after the fight that he was a little weight drained but this doesn’t take anything away from Rhodes who performed very well in the twilight of his career and i really hope he secures and wins the world title shot he craves.
Moore should be able to come back from this defeat, but possibly at Middlewight if reaching the Light Middleweight limit is proving to be more difficult.
This all action fight should be on the short list for British fight of the year.
fight of the year (in britain)
Ryan deserves a world title shot. It was billed as a world title eliminator, so he deserves his shot. Not sure whether he’ll beat Chavez, but he’ll give it a bloody good go!
as for Jamie Moore, he’ll be back, still a fantastic fighter and i’d love to see him fight again
Moore blocked plenty, to say otherwise tells me you did not watch the fight. He boxed well. Mooresy also hurt Rhodes on a few occasions. Rhodes elected to stand right in front of Moore and in his own words said in the post fight interview he had to do that. Yet you say he boxed and moved and had fun ?
It was a great fight though and a shame anyone had to lose
brilliant fight. both did great, i was so happy to see a top fight with the best fighting the best and both showing real heart, best fight ive seen this yr and a reminder wot can be like wen it isnt about money
great fight ,i love a good old fashioned domestic dust up
I’d like to see Moore step up to middleweight and fight macklin again!
Very impressed with Rhodes and I think he should be given a crack at a world title and some extra cash in the bank before retiring.
wot a cracking fight cud of gone either way.Rhodes showed a great chin taking sum heavy shots but just kept mixing it.wot a true champ moore is no excuses, saying the better man one on the nite.take my hat of 2 both
Great fight
Moore did punch himself out imo
and was surprised how good Rhodes chin was looked very strong
I think Chavez wont fight Rhodes now because people where saying how good Jamie Moore was but Rhodes is back and looking very good
