Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Will the Southpaw Jinx Strike Miguel?

cotto4532437By Giancarlo Malinconico: Freddie Roach’s latest studies of Miguel Cotto has led him to state, “He [Cotto] doesn’t fight southpaws really well.” Roach goes on to discuss how Cotto struggled against Zab Judah for much of the early part of their encounter before running out of steam. Roach contends that Pacquiao can do what Zab did in the early rounds for the entire twelve.

Although Cotto did eventually overcome Zab, and he dominated Carlos Quintana, there may be some merit to Roach’s comment. Judah hurt Cotto early with an uppercut, but failed to capitalize because Cotto countered with an uppercut to the testicles. Additionally, in his bout with
DeMarcus Corley, Cotto was rocked by a tricky right hook. And we all saw what ‘Manila Ice’ (Pacquiao’s right hook) did to Ricky Hatton. In addition, Roach claims Cotto does not take shots to the body well, and Joshua Clottey echoed this sentiment before his bout with Miguel as well. Expect Manny to send many straight left hands to Cotto’s body.

But Cotto’s stock has risen since Mayweather’s one-sided domination over Juan Manuel Marquez, and many feel the weight advantage will carry Miguel to victory. But the difference between Marquez and Pacquiao is simple: Manny carried up his power and speed. And the Pac Man is nothing like any of Cotto’s defeated opponents at welterweight. All of them, Mosley, Judah, Quintana and more, all had something in common: they all fought flatfooted.

Manny will box on his toes hit, move his head and move out of the way of returning shots. The trickiest punch a southpaw can land on an orthodox fighter is a right hook. Look for Cotto’s legs to turn to Jell-o if he is hit clean with ‘Manila Ice’: shades of Corley.

Southpaws do everything backwards, and Cotto will have to deal with that in addition to speed, head movement and footwork that he has never dealt with before in his career. But in defense of Cotto, he has knocked out every southpaw he has faced. And Cotto has won all of his fights only being stopped by a huge welterweight with cinder blocks for fists.

Nice!!!! A lot of doubtful people here to say that Cotto will win against Pacquiao. I think history will repeat itself as the British people said the same things with the Pacquiao Hatton fight. This time the Puerto Ricans will be conquered!!!!!!!!

  • WolfNxame says:

    I found this from Forbes:
“The highest-ranking of the four newcomers to the list is boxer Manny Pacquiao who earned $40 million over the last year, tied for the sixth most.
This is already the third prestigious list this year where The Pacman is included. The 2008 Fighter of the Year has earlier been ranked 22nd on Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People List and 57th on the Forbes Celebrity 100 List.”

If manny is a not a good boxer, i don’t know what he is.

    POP QUIZ
Can anyone enumerate the titles of Cotto? How about PacMan’s? And what does pound for pound king mean? Who in the entire world holds the most title? Is it true that Cotto made an announcement in Puerto Rico that his title is not at stake and that his fight with Pacman will be his biggest pay check? Who is the fighter of the decade for 2000 to 2009? How did the Pac fair in Time Magazine top 100 most influential Persons and in Forbes top highest paid athlete for 2009?

Remember…..Manny has 54 total fights & 6 championship titles….Manny has unceasing stamina. He just keeps on ticking, he gets stronger each and every round & when Manny eats a solid shot, it’s like more energy for him. I have never seen a fighter of this caliber like Manny, that’s why Manny has brought LIFE back into a fading boxing sport giving way to MMA & UFC. There will never be another fighter like Manny for centuries…so enjoy Him while you can…MANNY PACQUIAO THE NEW WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD & STILL THE BEST POUND-FOR-POUND KING BY A 9TH ROUND TKO…..ALOHA

  • Bang says:

Cotto WINS!!! round 3 left hook body shot!!!

  • chosen901 says:

Giancarlo…..It has been known since the early 80s’…..Crack Killz!!!! Cotto by 7-8 KO!!!!

  • LouMeatskavitch says:

Yeah I agree with most everyone on here. Cotto has always adapted and figured out a game plan to win. He will adjust to pacquiao the same way marquez Did. Cottos whole career he has been hit by stronger punchers than manny. If anyone gets ko’d it will be manny because he has never felt punishment from someone of cottos size power and precision. manny probably will not last past the 7th round.

  • minnow says:

PAC WILL GET KO IN 9!!!! nuff said

  • AbanDaNation says:

I just cant see Pacquiao winning this fight. He has great footwork, but gets hit with WAY to many shots. If Cotto catches him with a left hook, its lights out. I take cotto in 6, KO.

  • tommy says:

Dang!Fritz I have to disagree with you,but you definetly call it like you see it.Hats off

  • Fritz says:

PacMan will definitely catch Cotto, and will hurt him. Once that happens, expect Cotto to be tentative in his attack. And that will be the beginning of the end for COTTO. PacMan in 5

  • jhon foreman says:

How many good pilipino boxer was been destroyed, due to over comfident.Yes Oscar Loose, but if u really understand human body chemistry, u will figure out that if u loose 18lbs in a short period of time, is the same thing that u came out in hospital with a bad flue, and fight for the shake of boxing. With regards to Hatton who have to much pride in his size and punching power, charges with out protection and when he was hit, he loose his temper that lead him to his doom. Comparing Cotto who never loose his temper and always on defence mode, more bigger and more punching power and also speed, by the way i remeber cotto is also and olympian. i want to ask a question can u be an olympin if u r slow? thats a hard question ha! i guest u must posses a very high IQ to answer that one ha!

  • vrodz says:

Your point is weak. Cotto has KO’ed every soutpaw he has faced. So to answer your question; no it will not.

  • tommy says:

Good call Bud.I’m thinking Cotto in ten,but five isnt out of the question.

  • carlos says:

Liam so Lame. Go back to your own post.

  • brunner says:

there is no such thing as jinx in boxing.there is always a reason for losing like being done by the judges or referee, got caught by a lucky punch, drained, old age catching up, lack of focus, injuries, over confidence, poor preparation and simply losing to a better fighter, if cotto loses to pac, its not because of pac being lefty or of his loss to margarito, he will lose coz he maybe facing a better fighter in pac who has a unique fighting style who really enjoys boxing like how he enjoys playing golf, chess, billiards, dart,

  • Bud_Wiser says:

Cotto will definitely catch Pac, and will hurt him. Once that happens, expect Pac to be tentative in his attack. And that will be the beginning of the end for Pacquiao. Cotto in 5.

  • Raf says:

What Mike said,People forgett Cotto IS a Southpaw, he learned to fight as a righty but thats it. He can and will probably at some point change guards if necesarry.

  • Hec says:

I know Cotto will lose this fight cuz the night of the fight in puerto rico will be already 12am and in philipines will be early morning so Manny’s energy should be at the highest peak!! ..always something new why Cotto will Lose! Let’s watch the fight and talk later

  • Hec says:

Wow!! NOW cotto can’t fight southpaws??What’s next? FOr someone who only have one lost and is consider one of the best in the world every new article finds something new Cotto can’t do! what’s next? He usually wears his gloves on the wrong hands?

  • mike says:

Coto is left handed thats why he dont have problem with southpaw, he just like to fight ortodox. Let see what hapens when he chainge southpaw in the midle of the fight, we will see if many have a problem with southpaw too.

  • Punch Drunkard says:

    “foolish” NOT follish!!

  • Punch Drunkard says:

Cotto has BEATEN every southpaw he has fought professionally so for anyone to take Roach’s comments to heart that “Cotto has problems with southpaws” is follish!! Manny has problems with southpaws TOO!

  • RayP says:

Many fighters have problems with south paws, that’s nothing new. At this point in time I will say this. I think Pac fans keep throwing reasons out why Pac is going to win and saying what Pac is going to do to Cotto. It sounds almost as if they are trying to convince themselves that Pac will win. Cotto by brutal 9th rounds KO. Time to pay the piper. Pac’s countrymen can call Cotto and thank him for sending Manny into politics.

  • Cotito_combate says:

Liam and Manuel must be twins! For every piece not against Pac are considered outcasts.

  • jigs says:

great article, everybody knows pacman had great speed and power even climbing on higher weights not like jmm, cotto has 12round of cathching up for pacmans movement but i dont think it will go 12 round,a bad cut could cause cotto the fight it wil end pacman winning by tko

  • nepster says:
