Pacquiao-Cotto: Roach Now Predicting 1st round KO for Manny – News

By Manuel Perez: Well, I knew it would happen sooner or later. Freddie Roach, the trainer of Manny Pacquiao, is now predicting that Pacquiao will knock out World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto next month on November 14th, at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Roach started out predicting a 12 round decision over Cotto originally before the training camp started, but then changed to a knockout shortly after that.
I think it’s great that Pacquiao is beating up sparring partners but on November 14th, he’s not going to be facing Porter or the undersized aging Castillo, Pacquiao is facing Cotto. This is a fighter that has tore though the welterweight division, losing only once to Antonio Margarito in a fight that many people have questions about. Cotto might actually be undefeated for all practical purposes.
He’s beaten fast fighters in the past like Zab Judah and Shane Mosley, and proved that he can handle speedy fighters like Pacquiao. Next month, Cotto will be facing a fast fighter, to be sure, but not one as big as most of the welterweights that Cotto has normally competed against. The size will be missing and all that Pacquiao will have going for him is speed.
Pacquiao dominated Ricky Hatton, David Diaz and Oscar De La Hoya in one-sided fights in the past two years but none of those fighters really compare to Cotto. All of Pacquiao’s fans, including his loyal trainer, think that because Pacquiao has dominated fighters like Hatton, Diaz and De La Hoya and because he’s having a good camp, that he’ll be able to take out Cotto next month.
What they fail to realize is that Pacquiao is hopelessly over his head in this fight and will take a tremendous beating once Cotto gets him past the 5th round. Pacquiao has gotten used to beating up over-matched fighters, dominating them in the early parts of the fight and rarely getting hit back in return. Against Cotto, Pacquiao will be getting hit back and will be getting hit a lot.
This is where we will find out what Pacquiao is made of. I don’t believe that he’ll be able to take the punishment without melting like many of his over-matched opponents have. Cotto is going to beat Pacquiao down, make him submit and likely quit on his stool.
This is going to be a slaughter of the first order and it will be something along the lines of Pacquiao’s beating of De La Hoya and Hatton, only worse because Pacquiao will remain standing long enough to take severe punishment. Roach will learn to keep his trap shut when making predictions after this fight, unless Pacquiao is fighting washed up fighters.

Laughable, you made Cotto sound like today’s Sonny Liston… I guess Roach should be the one telling you to keep your trap shut on the predictions! Alternatively, Roach also said in an interview two days later that the interview with Rene Bonsubre Jr. where he said those words were blown out of proportion and that he doesn’t predict a first round knockout. He said he is going with his favorite number: 9.
This is the problem with biased and one-sided minded writers like Manuel Perez. What he didn’t mention is that Roach said “IF Cotto doesn’t run, Manny will knock him out on the first round”. He didn’t say that Manny will knock Cotto out on the first round, what he is saying is that if Cotto fights toe-to-toe with Manny on the first round he will go down.

So Freddie Roach predicted the DIAZ fight perfectly but then began slipping… he was off on the DLH pick by a split second (DLH did not choose to come out fighting in the 9th making the official time of stoppage round 8, 3:00). then Roach was off by a FULL second in his HATTON prediction since the fight was officially over round 2, 2:59.
Freddie Roach, in his last 3 predictions of MP’s fights, has been off by 1 second making his margin of error 0.015% (36 rounds = 6480 seconds). even if we make his error 2 seconds to account for the 8TKO of DLH rather than 9KO, his margin of error only goes up to 0.03%.

Totally agree with the comment above. I boxed in last years ABA’s as my first season as an adult. The way you’ve written this article…its obvious you’ve never been in the ring. Maybe fight night or any other games you’ve played have showed Cotto winning, but it’s not that simple.

Your excuse is that Roach is always gonna predict a win for his fighter, which is true but he is accurate with the results and how styles mesh.
I dont know who will win this fight but because i know everybody hates a devils advocate in Boxing…im gonna say Manny Pacquiao, simply because he can get off combinations quicker than Cotto, has better footspeed and although i believe Cotto MIGHT be the smarter boxer, Cotto is vulnerable early and takes time to get into a fight whereas Pacquiao is lethal within the first 3, but even if Cotto gets through the first 3 rounds his footwork is nowhere near Pacquiao’s.

I used to like Pac and Roach, but lately they’ve kinda got on my nerves. First round KO? Against Miguel Cotto? A guy who took 10 rounds to get TKO’d by the far bigger Margarito who had concrete in his gloves? By the little guy who couldn’t put a dehydrated De La Hoya down? Ok- if you say so.

Roach playing mind games, nothing else. Deep inside him he knows Pac will not survive if the fight lasts more than 2 rounds. Cotto can adjust his game. Pac cannot. Pac has no ring smarts, just speed and power. Once Cotto get a feel of Manny’s game, in 1 rd or 2, that will be the beginning of the end for Pac.

Some say that Manny’s KO punches are lucky…maybe, but more than likely not, if you look at his punch stats…connect percentage is better that 65% & half of that are power shots….this means the sucker is accurate…Manny has excellent perception & timing & this evident in the Hatton fight, all three knock downs were with bad intent & not luck. Cotto can take Pacman’s best punches and not be dazed. Pacfans are delusional. He is a great fighter, but his fans in Phillipines and everywhere else just give him a bad name because they overrate him. They overhype him to the extent that it doesn’t make it look good enough to appreciate. If only they were gone it would be much better for Manny.
Grow some brains people, Pacquiao isn’t invincible and has not fought any good competition for the past 2 years. Also he is fighting now on a league out of his reach, the tough Welterweight division. Cotto is on a whole different level and it’s a shame you guys will have to learn this the hard way on Nov 14th when you see live that Pacman just can’t do it and ends up in defeat.

the reason why there are so many pac haters is because he has falsely been given the title of p4p champ and a modern great, by beating fighters who are past their sell by date. If he beats cotto he will deserve the plaudits then, but cotto has to be a big favourite going into the fight. in case any of you pacquiao fans havent seen cotto fight, he has pretty quick hands himself, added to the fact that he is simply the better boxer/fighter and the bigger man, it all points to little caterpillar lip getting a smashing. of course he will still be the great fighter when he loses wont he! he was fighting a much bigger man wasnt he! same reason why we wont see floyd take him apart, (even though floyd started out as a junior lightweight).
