Kessler-Ward: Mikkel Will Taste Defeat for the Second time

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (42-1, 32 KO’s) goes into his November 21st Super Six tournament bout against 25-year-old challenger Andre Ward (20-0, 13 KO”s) as the favorite to win the Super Six tourney, and is expected to beat all the competition put in front of him. However, Kessler may have found that the talent in the Super Six tourney may be too much for, starting with his fight against the young Ward on November 21st.

Kessler has aged visibly in his year off from boxing and looked average in beating the little known Gusmyr Perdomo in a 4th round in September. If Perdomo had a better chin, he might have been able to win a decision over Kessler because he did well for awhile there.

ward545Kessler has been given a lot of credit for things that he’s done in the past, beating fighters like Anthony Mundine, Librado Andrade, Dimitri Sartison, Eric Lucas, Markus Beyer, while losing a 12 round decision to Joe Calaghe in 2007. The wins for Kessler were good in his day, but not the kind of victories to get all excited about. Each one of the fighters in the Super Six tournament could probably get through Kessler’s resume with a similar record as him.

So, basically Kessler enters the Super Six tournament as a big mystery, because no one knows how well he’ll do because he really hasn’t faced great competition during his career. Face it, Kessler was beaten by the best opponent of his career, Joe Calzaghe. And Calzaghe would literally have his hands full if he were to take part in the Super Six tourney because of the talented fighters like Andre Dirrell, Ward, Jermain Taylor and to a certain extent Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham.

Kessler enters the tournament as one of the older fighters facing a some young guns in Ward and Dirrell. Kessler might find out quickly that the sport of boxing has caught up to him and he’s no longer the top dog in the super middleweight division. Kessler has had it easy the past two years, with his year off between October 2008 to September 2009, and more limited fighters that he’s faced, like Danilo Haussler and Sartison in 2008.

With his fight against Ward next month, Kessler is going to be asking a lot of his skills by facing one great fighter after another. He can forget about being the favorite with the so-called odds makers, because Kessler may find himself fighting just to make it out of the first group I portion of the tourney. I think he’s capable of beating his 2nd opponent Carl Froch without too many problems, but the fight against Ward looks to be a big loss for Kessler.

If you’re a betting person, I recommend you keep your eyes on Ward in this fight because Kessler is over-matched in this fight. Like someone said, Kessler is too basic to beat the best fighters in the Super Six. Kessler’s jabs, left hook and straight right are primitive weapons when matched against blazing fast puncher/boxers like Dirrell and Ward.

Taylor also will be a big problem for Kessler because he’s faster and more powerful than him. I think Kessler will be hurt by the fact that he’s become too accustomed to fighting European fighters and will be in shock when he faces the tough Americans Ward, Dirrell and Taylor.

    well i think thats..

    Europe – 2
    America – 0

..and with the kessler-ward fight still to happen i think europe will have another 1 in the bag

Mikkel kessler will without a doubt win this tournament

“…because of the talented fighters like Andre Dirrell, Ward, Jermain Taylor and to a certain extent Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham.”

Saying that Abraham is talented ‘to a certain extent’ when compared to those three other fighters is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard about the Super Six. Taylor, sir, just got KTFO by Abraham. Dirrell just showed that he lacks the maturity to compete at this level (his skills, on the other hand, are very good). Ward, we have yet to see.

“Like someone said, Kessler is too basic to beat the best fighters in the Super Six.”

    Good appeal to authority there.

“Taylor also will be a big problem for Kessler because he’s faster and more powerful than him.”

Really? You could ARGUE that he’s faster, but more powerful? Don’t make me laugh.

In all your talk about Kessler, you didn’t say one thing about Ward. You’ve told us why Kessler will lose, but why will Ward win? At 20-0 with 13 KO’s, Ward hasn’t faced anyone of note except Edison Miranda. It’s also worth noting that seven of the less-than-amazing fighters Ward has faced in his 20-fight career have gone the distance.

Ward is a good fighter, but you’re going to have to give me more than this in order to convince me that Kessler won’t beat him.

    Scott Gilfoid = Bias Idiot

  • Guvo says:

Let face it Kessler is no Miranda.

Seriously R great comment and we don’t hate americans. I myself support many american boxers and some of my favorite youtube boxing shows are done by americans. The one thing i HATE is when some (very small minority) cannot give credit to boxers from other countries. But then again they are the people who get the responses we see here =)

  • one-two says:

Kessler’s jabs, left hook and straight right are primitive weapons.

So the three punches that make up any orthodox boxer’s repetoire are primitive now?…..

No wait, they are only primitive if they belong to a non-american fighter.

I think Ward’s a good fighter, but untested against the quality of Kessler, and you Mr Gilfoid are a tosser in every sense of the word

  • Richard w says:

This should turn out to be a great fight, and it will go the distance. Andre’s speed and Ring Generalship will give him the edge,he should win a close but unanimous decision…

  • rich,england says:

well said R . im english and support all brit boxers but im in no way biased towards them. my problem with scotts writing is not that he thinks dirrell will win but the fact that he just invents rubbish and ignores facts and is also blinded to reality. he also makes it clear that he hates britain, hates europe and thinks everyone that comes from here is useless !. by all means he is welcome to think dirrell will win but at least back it up with non biased facts and give a balanced view

  • R says:

Its unfortunate, but sometimes I understand why the whole world loathes America (btw-I’m American). We loudly detest and accuse Europeans of being biased towards their boxers based on nationalities, yet we do the same, only worst-we want the whole world to think we are #1 at everything-I think Americans need to wake up and realize that boxing is a global sport and give equal credit to fighters in Europe.

He better ignore Kessler’s resume and look at his ability.Ward may be in over his head…

  • Gaz says:

haha, Calzaghe would have had his hands full in the super six?

There are some decent fighters in there and Im excited but Calzaghe would have been the extreme favourite and had he not won easily it would have been a shock result

  • rich,england says:

yeah the tough americans like taylor that got knocked clean out by froch.

  • rich,england says:

to mike, i doubt gilfoid even watched that fight or many others that he comments on. i bet he just checks the results and makes up what he thinks happened because all the things he writes seem to bare no resemblance to what really happened, either that or his flag waving nationality bias blinded him to really

  • rich,england says:

hey scotty boy, why don’t you put your money where your big mouth is and promise to stop writing if either dirrell or ward loses just like liam santiago has about cotto, come on show us how confident you really are about these guys you champion every day. also why do you keep removing my comments? can’t you handle your articles being intelligently taken apart by someone with knowledge?. come on make the promise and show us that your not just another loud mouth american with no b@lls

  • AnthonyW says:

I think Ward is going to do well in this tournament, but Kessler may just be too tough for and experienced for him.

Kessler would have a better resume if the top fighters would have fought him over the past year or so. He had problems with his promoter what kept him out for a while, but he also offered the top European and American boxers bouts but they all turned him down. He was to risky, even Hopkins said no.

  • JD says:

Ward couldn’t take out Miranda, and Miranda wasn’t fighting back.Perdomo may have looked good to you but the judges had the fight 30 – 26, 29 – 27, 29 -27, all in favor of Kessler. You might also remember that Kessler had been off for eleven months and was just trying to get rid of some ring rust.

  • Mike says:

Seriously i don’t mind your biased trash sometimes but kessler looked average against pedromo????? Did u watch with your eyes closed?? The first few rounds were wearing off the rust and a feeling out process and then kessler knocked him in to next week. Kessler was not troubled at all i would have said ward looked less impressive throwing one million punches trying to get that guy out of there where as kessler lands one or two and flattens his opponent. Then again he’s not american right?

  • Mike says:

Yawn we shall see gilfoid!! Kessler is a LOT better than u make out.

  • daveboy says:

Scott moving on to kessler as swell now kessler hasn’t fort any one of ward or dirrell caliber OK mate so ho has ward and dirrel Beeton ward got a twelve round decision over Miranda the same guy ho got KO by pavlik ho in turn KO Taylor and we all no Wat froch don to Taylor also Abraham KO Miranda in their second fight so ward’s win over Miranda isn’t looking so great now is it

  • Flymmex says:

Ward and dirrel look ok, but they have been fighting at a very low level indeed. Niether fighter has fought above level b/c fighters. They might prove to be great, but they have to prove it. A prime calzaghe would win this tournament easily. In fact both roy jones and bhop would do well now in this tourney. K

  • Godlikerich says:

Has Gilfoid ever predicted a European fighter to win a fight ever? He is so blinded by national bias and I don’t know why. He has been wrong so many times about the results of fights because of this idiotic behaviour. For example this one: “I think Taylor is going to win by a blowout and probably knock Froch out in the process.” WRONG – Froch knocked Taylor out. And this one about the Hopkins Calzaghe fight where gilfoid was adamant that Hopkins would fight inside but instead Hopkins ran all night: “I think people need to completely forget about Calzaghe’s high volume punch output and think in terms of a slow, inside fight where both fighters well take turns trading for 12-rounds.” – Calzaghe’s high work-rate won him the fight Scott. And yeah Calzaghe won. Damn man why the bias look at the boxer and his skills not where he comes from it’s just boring and makes you look like an idiot.

  • Steven Wain says:

Jason, any relation to scott?? just asking

    Steven

  • Rich says:

Hey a little variety! Good work Scott!

  • Jack says:

Jason, firstly it’s biased; learn it, memorise it, eat it. Secondly Kessler is Danish, not British. Idiot

  • Jason says:

    haha tell them scott
    these baist uk fans

  • linners says:

whenever Im feeling a little bored, or need cheering up, I come onto this website and read a Scott Gilfoid article.

The man is a genius. Plain and simple. I love how he has fabricated this little fantasy world in his head, where he makes up his own history, invents reasons to hate a fighter who, as the story ussually goes is British or European, and creates these brilliant hype jobs, championing the likes of Andre Dirrell, Andre Ward, Jeff Lacy and any other (American) Prospect. Im esspecially loving that he down right ignores facts, still considers Jermain Taylor a legitimate threat, and STILL bangs on about Joe Calzaghe being over rated.

Pretty soon he’s going to go so far up his own @rse that Im afraid he’ll never find his way back out.
