Kell Brook – Time to Join the Elite Class?
By Richard Gough: For me, the most disappointing news of the last week or so is the postponement of the Kell Brook – Michael Jennings bout due to illness on Kell’s part. We were due to see whether the much touted Kell Brook is good enough to step up to the world level.
But domestically, he is the best Britain has to offer in the Welterweight division, his place unchallenged. Until Now.
Kell, the current BBBofC British Welterweight Champion, has so far defended his tite three times against solid domestic level fighters, knocking out all three. But it has to be said, none are near the level of Michael Jennings.
For non Britsh readers of this article who are unaware ok Kell, Brook is trained by the same trainer as Prince Naseem Hamed, and his title defences are available to view on Youtube.
In Kell, Britain may have the Welterweight to go to America, and challenge the top Welterwights, in my opinion, the best, deepest and most exciting division in the sport currently. But first, he must prove his mettle, by fighting, and beating Michael Jennings. Kell’s style is a throw back to the days of Prince Naseem, though not quite as wild. Watching his title defences, the lunging punches instantly remind you of the Prince. I wonder how Michael would cope, and further into the future, wonder what the top welterweights would make of this young Brit and his unorthodox style, and how they would cope.
As of this point in time, there is no news on when the fight will be re-scheduled. Jennings has got in a fighter for a keep busy fight to tide him over until Kell is over his illness.
I hope Kell recovers quickly, as his future is waiting, get past Jennings, and fights with the Elite will be waiting. I would like to see him in a fight with Zab Judah after Jennings, a further indication of where he is, and how far he can go.

Kell is definitely an amazing fighter
Also new heavywieght star in the making Richard Towers trains in the same gym.
Richard Towers is also fighting undercard to am khan December 5th
I hope that is true casual riot. was looking forward to this one.
I think Brook is the best potential we have got. He moves and times incredibly but needs sterner tests. firstly he has to get through Jennings who is busy and moves a lot.
I would like to see Kell Brook up his workrate a bit but unlikley with him being an Ingle fighter who loves to time the big shots.
Its the best division in the world he has to crack so Im hoping he is as good as he seems
bring it on, khan would easily kick his arse!!!!! and trust me it will be one of the easiest fights khan would have because he would cherry pick shots on an open fighter like brook!
Im a big kell brook fan he looks to be the bussiness. Why is HE not the one who is hyped and fast tracked to stardom WHY is it amir khan? in fact good point lets do khan vs brook! Kell brook would destoy guys like matthew hatton and jennings, so yes move him up, but for the european title first not world level just yet lets be sensible now
Very true. Kell looks a bit more robust than Naz or Herol ever did though so hopefully his chin’s better. Naz should never have gone with Manny Stewart, ruined him as a fighter and took away all his natural ability. Doubt Kell will make the same mistake – seems a lot more level headed in interviews. But agree with you Ben – Brook’s the next big thing. Would love him to take apart the welterweight division, all the big names and then see what Mr Gilford has to write about it.
ive been in the gym and watched kell train
he is the next big thing
i only have one worry about him and thats his chin. its very untested.
if he has the gym i predict he will be a top 5 welterweight within 2 or 3 years time. if he has no chin then he will dominate britain and europe, but no more.
lets just hope the ingles can keep his ego in check. afterall thats where it went wrong for naseem hamed.
Uk-Ha-Gough was that tall ginger cb with the good header, better watch out for the accidential headbutts with this one then lol!Which town are you and Jennings from?
Richard Gough? The ex Rangers and Scotland centre back?
I think it is time for Brook to join the elite, hes prob the best proper Welter we have had for some time and has so much world quality potential.
But then ive seen many others look that good till they reach that level and are found badly wanting. Its easy to look better than you are fighting at domestic level.
Jennings is the perfect test and great chance to see what hes got at a high European level. Jennings got a good slap at world level against Cotto but at a lesser level hes a very very good boxer.
Im a big Jennings fan as i come from the same town but on this occasion id like Brook to do the businness and really make a statement to the divisions bigger names.
there’s been talk that the re-arranged brook vs jennings fight will be on the undercard of khan in december
