Roy had only had 3 pro fights by October of 1989 and was still talking on light-middles. He only turned pro in May ‘89. So he could not have been considered when taking into account the top fighters of that year-though he di beat Ron Amundsen who was 16-1-1 in only his third fight. It wasn’t until May 1993 that he captured the IBF middleweight title against Hopkins.

Fantastic article, real knowledge and insight. Agree from Jackson/Williams right down to Chavez/Manny…Although he loves a war, Chavez at 140 I feel would knock him out. At 130 I’m not so sure but definite KO at 140.

They say Lloyd Honeyghan had a one off when defeating Curry, maybe that’s right when you consider his performances after this fight. I personally feel he got complacent and forgot his boxing skills, electing to brawl instead.

if tommy hearns & sugar ray robinson stayed at welter weight that would have raised many eyebrows, few fighter would stand a good chance would be:

MAYWEATHER – too much skill / speed
PACMAN – too much speed / power > i.e hatton KO2

and……….

middle weights such right now, execpt paul willaims.
20 years ago they where legends in the making,

welterweight / light welter weight we have better prospect than 20 years ago:
mayweather
magarito
cotto
PACMAN
de la hoya
hatton – only lost to living legends.
mosley

these fighters would have beat the fighters 20 years ago,

I just wouldn’t count out Pacman against either Chavez or Taylor. He surprises time and time again. And if he can blow Cotto away just like what he did to Hatton ~ there’s no doubt he’ll win against those two guys either by KO or decision. Just my 2 cent.

I wish this article would have been the best fighters now vs the best fighters of 25 years ago. Then we could be talking about Aaron Pryor demolishing Pacquaio at 140!!!
