Froch-Dirrell: Enough Already
By John Dimeck: As our American cousins like to say, “Enough Already”, when bleating on about a point well made and well taken. I’m talking of course about the Froch Dirrell fight and the very close decision that went the champion’s way. May I make a few points, but they are only opinion, and I’m open to others. Firstly, and most obviously, it was a close contest. Even if there were no challenger and no champion, this was a close contest.
Fast forward now to Dirrell being on the road versus Froch.
Like Taylor / Froch it was very definitely a close scrap, (although you could argue more for Froch V Taylor but still ……), it’s a close fight, Dirrell, slick and evasive, Froch, trying to pursue and connect without much success, and so on.
Point is, Froch didn’t give the judges the chance to rob him after he came back so well in the second half of the fight V Taylor, he decided it himself. Dirrell did no such thing, even though he knew that’s what was required, as told to him by his corner. He couldn’t close the deal.
Let’s face it fellas, this was a boring fight, Dirrell was afraid to engage – which is a shame as he looked pretty good when he did and likely would’ve won had he decided (against his trainer’s advice) to trade with Froch, he’s got a surprise for Abraham in my opinion.
So, sports fans, remember, there is no black and white guarantee in sporting contests, but I’ll say two things, and they are merely opinions and observations.
Firstly, in other sports, a team may suffer a freak result (Burnley / Man Utd anyone? or Oakland in the NFL for our US readers?), it does not make the surprise loser suddenly a weak team, these results do happen, ask a mathematician, it’s a given that upsets happen.
Secondly, Carl Froch had a bad night, but still ‘won’. I won’t debate here whether he won or not, I just know that he didn’t lose, and that’s the point folks, Dirrell did not win the fight.
Regardless, Froch is simply much, much better than 9/2 to win this tournament, which is what he’s offered at right now. Dirrell will give anyone fits with his ‘style’, and he may never win anything, let alone this tournament, but at 25/1 I may have a wee bit of that as well.
Dirrell didn’t beat Froch folks, nor did Froch beat Dirrell, ergo the belt stays on Froch’s waist. Got that ? Good, it’s clear then, you’ve got to ‘win’ the belt. We all knew that anyway, right, boxing fans. Let’s move on.
A mention to Jermaine Taylor. Even though he has lost 4 of 5 or whatever it is, I feel he still has something to offer in this tournament. Was competing well with Arthur Abraham but a bit behind before the knockout, but definitely not outclassed by the European and belongs here, so hopefully he stays in and he makes some noise, as I believe he’s a good fighter and not just another over-hyped American getting found out now that he’s got to fight in Europe.
Hopefully Ward beats Kessler and it’s game on..

Nice article… pretty much bang on… Dirrel did not deserve to take the belt…
to dave the rave, when carl was ranked no 3 by the wbc,he chose to fight bika and manfredo instead of froch…when carl was no 1 and mandatory joe gave up the belt, enough said…..
Froch got spanked…I listened to the Froch waffle after the fight and in my opinion he knows he got spanked in a BOXING match…lets remember thats why we watch Boxing it is what it says on the tin Hit and not get hit …simple…It aint a 100 rounds of stamina and granite chin its 12 rounds and Froch you got spanked.. you wanted to fight Joe …well lucky for you you did not you woulda got WHUPPED
froch edged him
Dirrell and Froch wasn’t even a fight, how in hell could U ever think Froch WON. He couldn’t even touch Dirrell. Dirrell hit him with the harder shots EVERY round and almost got knocked down at the end of a few rounds. Froch would be punching at air and the fans would get up and clap for him. By the seventh he was a beaten fighter, Dirrell stood right in front of him and dared him to throw a punch. When Froch tried he got hit with short sharp punches.
Froch couldn’t have won 3 rounds the whole night bragging after the fight that he could go another 12 rds with Dirrell and win, HOW – when U didn’t win the first fight. AND what fool could have even thought that that fight was close. Just U non boxers and writers who have never boxed.
I think anyone who is still concerned with what happened in this fight needs to get over it. I’m a huge Andre Dirrell fan. I believe he won. He didn’t though. People need to give credit to Carl Froch, because he did what he needed to do. He’s still “champion.” Andre didn’t do enough no matter the excuse (hometown cooking, dirty tactics, etc.) Hopefully, both fighters improve because of this fight. They both have a long ways to go. Unfortunately for Froch, his room for improvement seems quite limited compared to Dirrell. Froch’s lack of athleticism and speed will always be weaknesses for him. But so what? Until some one beats him people need to recognize him as the champ, like it or not.
to rmc above,great comments.spot on….
Good article, please keep writing them.
Ukansodoff – I think you have hit the nail on the head when it comes to Dirrell choosing to run, I think he felt Frochs power when he did occasionally connect. I think Froch will perform much better against the likes of Kessler and Abraham due to their styles and that they are not known to be the quickest of fighters nor quick starters which Froch appears to struggle against. Quick fighters such Taylor and Dirrell caused Froch serious problems in both bouts, but whether people agree or not, he a found way/means to beat them, which I think is an important part of a champions make up. However Froch needs to raise his game if he is too succeed in this tournament.
I’ll say this and let this be the end. There was more than a championship on the line in that match, both fighters had undefeated records. And rightly or wrongly that’s means a lot in the sport of boxing. To have your “0″ taken away in a contest where your opponent couldn’t hit you is a travesty. In very close fights (where there’s no clear winner or loser), call it a draw. I think everyone would be satisfied with that. But the way it went down with the judges and the ref was just plain wrong. Enough said!
Definatly “enough already”. This all goes on too long, everybody by now has listened to each other opinions and come to their own decisions.
The only thing im still tryin to weigh up is why Dirrell ran. He was out boxing Froch until the middle rounds, what made him run and hold? Something clearly spooked him, was it Froches power?
I had Dirrell down to win the fight but he went on the run, Froch was for the 2nd fight in a row shown up to be a great tough boxer but slow and limited skill wise.
from that id say neither of them are good enough to actually win the whole thing.
Good article.. Dirrell is a good fighter, I think he was slightly overwhelmed with the big occasion. He should of engaged more and in my mind would have won if he did. Froch is decent but does think he is better than he really is.
Abraham will beat Dirrell but I fear it maybe a very defensive fight from both parties and as a result a dull points win to Abraham..
M
great article, spot on..you have to fight and fight hard to win a wbc belt, dirrell wasnt interested, but still was a lot better than i thought,i too may have a few quid on him vs abraham as i think he could surprise him and also has home advantage,,,keep up the good work
good point Slapfest, now can you move your laptop your already taking up half the bed
SPOT ON….
FROM ALL THE PUBLICITY HE IS GETTING I PERSONALLY THINK CARL FROCH IS NOW THE BIGGEST NAME IN THE SUPER 6. HE IS ALL PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT!
Good piece, I thought it was an ugly fight as well but I call me bias but I still froch loses this one. Love his athletism but when you have to resource to grabbing people in the back of the head to land punches you should just join the ufc. Good athlete, bad skills and in a tournment base off point ever match counts.See your point but well politely disagree. Feel you one point, to all writer “ITS OVER NOBODY CARES ANYMORE MOVE ON TO THE NEXT FIGHTS” thank you. Peace
no matter what you or anyone else say’s – FROCH LOST and was given a gift decision!
well put . other writers should take note
How dare you write a good un-bias article that makes my last 20 articles look completely stupid, I hate you more than I hate Froch, Calzaghe and Hatton put together!
DIRRELL WON I TELL YOU, HE WON!!!! ARRGHHH!!!
Closier. Thank you.
Good article. You should have a word with Scott and tell him to write about something else!
Felt sorry for Taylor – I wasnt sure who I was rooting for in that fight but I wanted him to survive and give a good account of himself. He nearly did it and I dont think he should quit anything. He has a lot to offer, I hope he bounces back.
