Floyd Mayweather Jr. – The Rebirth Of The Fighter Of My Generation

mayweather53439By Dewi Powell: Just a quick introduction to myself as this is My First Article! I’m 17 and I live in the South Wales valleys, just 15 minutes from Joe Calzaghe’s native Newbridge and 5 minutes from the up-and-coming home of Nathan Cleverly, Cefn Forest. My earliest memory of boxing is watching a repeat of Lewis-Klitschko and being amazed at the punishment them two were giving and taking each other, I was gripped. Since that young age of 11 I’ve absolutely loved the sport. I’m constantly reading about boxing on here or secoundsout.com or watching it on youtube (I must of watched about 400 fights on youtube!) and i feel like I’ve learnt so much about the sport recently. After commenting on many articles on here I thought to give it a bash myself and I wondered how else to do it than talk about The Rebirth Of The Fighter Of My Generation.

8th of December 2007, it was the type of style-clashes that makes fights. In one corner was the brash American who was the perfect practitioner of the sweet science and in the other corner was the humble working class Englishman, both with perfect efforts. After a brutal 10 rounds Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton was toppled by a perfect check left and his perfect record was no more whilst “Pretty Boy” Floyd “The Money” Mayweather cemented his status as the best in the world.

19th of September 2009, The Money was back. Two years had passed since his victory over Hatton, and in this time a Filipino had jumped through the weights in a way that was rather remarkable to the modern boxing world. On his way to international stardom he had gained a second questionable decision over Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez at super-featherweight, stopped David Diaz after 9 rounds at lightweight, forced Oscar De La Hoya to stay on his stool after 8 rounds at welterweight and Ricky Hatton at Jr-welterweight was simply knocked out cold in the second round. What makes Manny Pacquiao even more dangerous is that he has arguably the best tactician in his corner, Freddy Roach. Floyd Mayweather had it all to prove, rejuvenated with his father back in his corner, he was taking on the man who many believed had defeated Pacquiao, with Pacquiao having beat De La Hoya and Hatton more efficiently than Mayweather, The Money had a statement to make!

Faster, stronger and harder to beat – that’s how to summarise Floyd’s comeback. Mayweather thoroughly controlled the pace; he landed when he wanted too and barely got hit. It was as close to flawless as possible; Mexico’s renowned body punching couldn’t track Mayweather down as his intense padwork proved reliable as he saw everything thrown at him … Before it was thrown! The question now is where does Mayweather go from here and who could beat him?

Firstly I’ll start with the forgotten and underrated man at welterweight, Puerto Rican, Miguel Cotto. To start may I add how tough this man is! Just as he showed against Clottey, even though he has sustained huge cuts in his past he has the heart of a warrior to come through them which is why I wouldn’t say Mayweather would stop Cotto in the distance. Instead I say that Mayweather would thoroughly expose and outbox Cotto. I think a simple way to look at it would be to say that Cotto would close the ring off and make Mayweather fight, yet I disagree. I think Cotto is too flat footed and hasn’t got the ability to fight at a high tempo and still be effective enough to hurt Mayweather or take rounds off him. Also I think that Cotto lunges in too much with his jab and as powerful as his left hook is it’s too wide and these two telling factors combined I think would lead to Mayweather landing many left hand counters, uppercuts and straights. Mayweather to win by UD here in my opinion.

Some say Pacquiao. However, like De La Hoya stated, if Marquez was able to land so often and so clean on Pacquiao then imagine how Mayweather would hurt Pacquiao as it is generally accepted that he’d land bigger and more often than Marquez did on Pacquiao. Coupled with Mayweather’s supreme movement and the fact that since Marquez wasn’t able to close Mayweather down it’s highly unlikely that Pacquiao could I don’t see a way in which Pacquiao could defeat Mayweather. Mayweather wins by late stoppage I think here. I appreciate that this section is small but I elaborate on the reasons why Pacquiao couldn’t beat Mayweather later in the article.

Others are saying Sugar Shane Mosley. For this point I think it is key to look at two of Mosley’s recent fights to help explain why Mayweather will win. But first let’s look at some other factors on why Mosley shouldn’t even be given the chance to fight Mayweather. In the post fight interview, HBO’s Max Kellerman seemed to make out Floyd only fights people who are naturally smaller than him but i think they are forgetting him moving up to 154 lbs to fight De La Hoya which was a massive effort as the fight showed. Also, maybe they are forgetting Mosley being unable to agree fights with Pacquiao and Judah (and Berto for a long time) so i think questions should be asked to Mosley about the people he hasn’t fought, especially the fact that the likes of credible opponents like Cintron have been calling him out all year yet he ignores them. Mosley wanted a rematch with Cotto before he defeated Margarito but since he’s got a welterweight belt back he doesn’t want to fight Cotto now he has something to lose. The BIGGEST point against Mosley in this argument is why didn’t he take HIS chance when Mayweather was calling him out in 2005 for a fight in 2006? After his second fight with Vargas his excuses were that he wanted a 2 week holiday (even though Floyd gave him 6months notice), that he has a loose tooth and finally that Margarito deserved the fight more (Margarito better than Mayweather? What the hell was he thinking?!). Finally, Mosley’s actions after the Mayweather-Marquez fight took me by surprise as I’m sure it did you. Critics say that Mayweather looked scared which I don’t think he was but everyone deserves their own opinion, but i thought Mayweather’s reactions were the same as mine, Shock! Shock that Mosley would be so stupid and disrespectful to damage the good image he has. Like I said, I was surprised with Mosley but i wasn’t with B-Hop, what an idiot! As if saying ‘’I’ll never lose to a white boy’’ wasn’t stupid enough, now he’s getting involved in Mosley’s arguments. Back to the reasons why Mosley won’t beat Mayweather.

Firstly, 27th September 2008, Mosley got into the ring with the Argentinean un-orthodox Ricardo Mayorga. After defeat to Miguel Cotto this was meant to be a comeback fight for Mosley, expecting a victory at Jr-middleweight for the first time in 2 years Mosley struggled to impose himself. Mosley was extremely one dimensional; he seemed to be looking for a big shot every other punch and when the two got close Mosley often attempted to lean with his shoulders to work on the inside. This didn’t work! Mayorga saw the big punches coming; by this he landed two or three of his own because his two punches were faster than Mosley’s big punch, on the inside he often didn’t let Mosley attempt to use his strength, instead he stepped away and landed before Mosley got his telling punches off. On success of his tactics Mayorga got carried away, especially in rounds 10 and 11, he tired himself out and in round 12 it was the first time Mosley’s tactics came into effect. Mayorga was stopped with literally seconds left. Some say that this is the beauty of Mosley, the ability to knock his opponent out when he wants; they also say that he struggled because he’s an average sized Jr-middleweight whereas in the welterweight division he’s one of the big guys. Others like myself, prefer to say that Mosley demonstrated that against a fighter with a small ability to move his style and tactics get exposed and he gets caught. Against Mayweather this would simply spell defeat for Mosley.

Secondly, 24th January 2009. Mosley, stepped into the ring with the conqueror of Miguel Cotto. Antonio Margarito. Take nothing away from Sugar Shane his performance was world class this night but I refuse to accept that this fight is an indicator to suggest that Mosley could beat Mayweather. I don’t see how Margarito resembles Floyd in any way. Many boxing experts in the media have said that this was Mosley back to his best but when has the style he would use against Mayweather been successful against Mayweather? The answer being, never. Even when executed as precisely as De La Hoya did it, it isn’t enough to beat Mayweather. (Mayweather to win by UD here I think) Leading on to my next point …

The game plan of going to Mayweather’s body, cutting off the ring and getting him into a brawl on the back-foot has to be abandoned now, like Floyd said 40 fighters have fought with that game plan and they’ve all left empty handed. I saw Freddy Roach say that doesn’t work because of the shoulder roll and to break it you would need to throw fakes to expose his body but i think that wouldn’t work because Mayweather’s pad work is SO INTENSE that nobody is capable of making him take a good enough fake to land big enough punch to hurt him (so I couldn’t see Roach’s man Pacquiao doing this). As Antonio Tarver proved with Roy Jones Jr who in his day was a master of the shoulder roll (even if fight night 4 have grossly exaggerated it!) not that he was much of a defensive fighter, the only way to land it is to land big to the head, simple and effective but i think Mayweather is probably the hardest fighter in the world to land on. And for me there isn’t a lightweight, light-welter, welterweight or junior middleweight that can throw fakes good enough to land big enough to hurt Floyd … except Paul Williams! In my opinion this is the only fighter out there with the attributes to fight Mayweather in the current time and have a realistic chance of victory. Williams as Larry Merchant has put it “fights tall”, he has a tremendously effective jab, can cut off a ring and not be so direct due to the ability to lead with both hands and he possesses what I said is most needed to beat Mayweather is the ability to land big and hurt your opponent (demonstrated by his 70% knockout rate). If Williams is to get a fight with Martinez and later to re-organise with Pavlik and can still make Jr-middleweight then this is the only way I can see Mayweather being defeated!

With Pacquiao beating Cotto on everything that he was supposed to be good at, where do you see Mayweather now? The radio interview exposed money man’s purported greatness – he chooses whom to fight, and he doesnt really fight his own size. No wonder he’s undefeated.

  • Dp says:

my man i like ur article but one problem when did roy jones ever master ther “sholder roll” Never thats james toney, benard hopkins, floyd mayweather, mayweather has masterd it the best. roy jones did the rope a dope.. not as good as he got old he got “pumled” against the ropes

excellent work, welcome to the site Dewi!

Anyone think the site is improving? the 3 amigos are still coming out with all kinds of crap but there are also some good articles and Dewi is a MORE than worthy addition!

  • Rich says:

For the last time, Marquez above 135 is not a gauge for Pacquiao. Marquez, even with his two great fights at 135, hit his peak at 130, a weight Pacquiao had trouble making by the time of Marquez. For Marquez, a counterpuncher, with added weight to slow him down along with his reflexes, how was he going to beat a guy at welterweight?

Pacquiao has also changed since Marquez. His right hand is becoming as dangerous as his left and he’s become more of a two-handed boxer than the left handed fighter that we all saw and he has not lost his speed going up in weight.

Not to mention, if Mayweather couldn’t KO Marquez, how the hell is he supposed to face the best arsenal in all of boxing?

article is too long and boring

    @gene

i think floyd will fight pac win or lose the cotto fight. i’m preety sure he doesnt want anything to do with cotto. and i said i think if cotto wins the fight he is the pound for pound king.

  • Manny Perez's mama says:

Yep, you’re 17 alright! Maybe even 15 with dad’s help.

  • Clubber Lang says:

Well, good job on the article. Lower the excitment a little, though. It could translate as biased or favour-based, instead of objective and factual.

  • Bobby Boo says:

I rate Pac-Man right up there, who doesnt? but in my opinion, if Floyd is FLOYD….(should they meet) Floyd wins my boxing him smartly!! Cotto might change everything yet!!

  • Bobby Boo says:

PEOPLE LIKE TO MENTION WEIGHT WHEN/IF IT SUITS THEM….No-One was talking about weight when Pac-Man destroyed the heavier Ricky Hatton..who once boasted “No-One in the world can beat me at Jnr-Welterweight”…Yes Weight can be an advantage…but primarily its about “Technique/Skills/Brains”……BobbyBoo has spoken!!! hahaha

  • Bobby Boo says:

Eyes Wide Open….I mean his boxing skills my man, his boxing brain/technique……not just the Marquez fight (which was, in hindsight, a complete mismatch) HINDSIGHT IS A motherf*****, which is always easy to say after the event. Pac-man wont beat Floyd if Floyds on his Game is what im saying, my opinion, Cotto/Mosley could trouble him tho…but i believe Floyd has the skills to beat whatevers in front of him if he doesnt dip in current form…The boys TOOO Sharp.

  • Eyes wide open says:

Bobby Boo the Marquez fight was a joke. It’s like Pavlik making pac man meet him at middle weight the still coming in over the limit. Marquez is a great fighter but he’s too small for a welterweight. I think Pac man is too but he continues to prove me wrong. Floyd and Pac man will end up fighting. There’s just too much money involved for them not too. Plus Floyd won’t have to fight a legitiment welterweight too.

  • Enard says:

great Article! Ur sure your only 17!? I can tell U have analyzed each fighters strengths and weakness with each match up! Keep it up, U have a future!

  • boxingobserver says:

When Mayweather fought Hatton, HBO announcers said Mayweather got hit many times by Hatton because Hatton has fast hands but when Pacquiao destroyed Hatton, HBO announcers never mentioned anything about Hatton’s fast hands. Mayweather won convincingly against Marquez because all of the advantages were for Mayweather. Marquez was effective at 130 lbs but a 36 year old jumping up 14 lbs and Mayweather was 2 lbs over the limit what can expect.

  • Bobby Boo says:

Mr Powell knows his stuff, for such a young lad!! Respect……My Opinion is….THE FLOYD WE SAW The OTHER DAY….NO-ONE IS BEATING HIM FOR NOW..the kid is clever, great defence very smart in the ring with cat-like reflexes, he just does enough to win too, knows what it takes, he wont lose for now (as long as he dosent have a dip in Form)

  • Anonymous says:

    great article.mayweatheris a legend

  • Eyes wide open says:

He’s fought Judah and Baldimor at welter. Thats it. You point out that Mosely stuggled a bit with some fighters. Floyd won’t even fight any of them. And what about castillo? pressured floyd in the first fight and he couldn’t deal with it. That was a Loss by about 4 rounds! Every one says Marquze was robbed against pac man when if you watch the fight it acutally isn’t it was just that close it could have gone either way. The castillo fight was clear who the winner was listen the the commentators at the end. Floyds a great boxer but his hearts the size of a pea!

  • Anonymous says:

Floyd will remain unbeaten, because he won’t fight anyone who has a chance of beating him. He will most likely find another up and coming lightweight to fight, but he won’t fight a welterweight. And his minion of lemmings will buy it anyway because they don’t care as long as Floyd wins it’s ok with them. Even if he fights a midget as long as he wins, it’s just fine.

  • phooquiao says:

Great article, though I hardly call his fight with Marquez a rebirth.

  • j says:

    too long didn’t read.

  • JR says:

i believe floydie is a skilled boxer but not great. being undefeated doesn’t mean he’s the best if he’s choosing small opponents. it’s all about money for him that’s why he doesn’t want to lose. once he gets the big L in his record. he’s a nobody. I BELIEVE PEOPLE WANTS TO SEE HIS FIGHTS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO SEE OTHER BOXER KICK FLOYDIE’S A55.

  • mikec. says:

pbf hasn’t no one he is a counter puncher only brawls when you bring it to him remember gatti exsposed corrales exsposed also when he fight someone smaller he cherry picks cotto vs pac tell me.oh nice article

  • Gene says:

    @TY b

Get your facts straight!!! It’s Floyd who does’nt want any part of Pac. Pac even said it in the open yesterday just like what Shane said, “Floyd doesnt want to fight me!” Like others around here, I believe PBF is a great boxer but lacks braveheart because of too much concern about his “O” record.

What would you call a boxer challenged in the open and refuses to fight the most deserving challengers in his prime? He ought to be called P4P king only if he fights the winner of Cotto/Pac match.

  • owenspud says:

Mosley has good feignts not “fakes” and lightning fast combinations which are the key to possibly defeating Floyd.Williams agreed would cause every Welter problems with his height and reach, but with confidence and intent he is fallible as Margarito proved in the second half of their bout and Quintana 1.

  • owenspud says:

Mosley was a legend and unbeatable as a lightweight.Oscar would have been better served to revert to his original type of firing out his superb jab and combinations instead of trying to crudely walk him down-honest as ever,he admitted this after!

  • LSP says:

Well Done Dewi. That was quite entertaining I must say!

  • owenspud says:

  • owenspud says:

So if Mosley was avoiding the top guys then why would he fight Margarito, who seemed at the time like the Terminator after conquering Cotto. This was before the wraps saga which Shane’s team discovered!Mosley to his due,is well known for taking on all comers-hence the defeats to Forrest and Winky. These were two guys made to bother him and he still fought them.I seem to notice you mentioned Floyd avoided Vernon….!

  • MikeL says:

Great article, 17 years old and it’s like you have been writing for twice that long. Much much better than some I have read. However, I’m not going into them, but some details are not so correct, or maybe it’s just my old brain having a brain fart or senior moment. Anyway, Mayweather CAN NOT beat Manny, Mayweather don’t want no part of that PAC. Mayweather wants the money, and due to his brief retirement, he does not deserve it. He needs to earn it first, and 1 fight is not enough to do that. I think they should agree on a 60/40 winner take 60

  • Anonymous says:

stephen – I seen the De Gale fight. I wouldnt really put him on course for world level, maybe European is his limit. He doesnt carry much power for Super MiddleWeight, especially when you compare him in size to the boxers in the Super 6 tournament.

Good first article Dewi, keep it up.

  • owenspud says:

Back to the subject matter-Floyd easily.I admire him but not an out and out fan.Too good a defense, better lateral movement, more acccurate and a better counter-puncher than Marquez who many believe defeated Pac.

  • stephen says:

floyd cant run for ever. he just HAS TO fight at least one of the top fighters

  • wayner says:

he also ducked quartey, and the late vernon the viper forrest.. when he was around and if he has got all that money? he should be fighting for the love and the pride of the sport….

  • wayner says:

he has ducked some of the most talented in the division cotto, moseley, i thought he lost the fight with delahoya? all the high lights were delahoya i have been a fight fan for years.. his style is not entertaining to me i like boxers who leave it all in the ring. see morales vs barrera 1 or any of the ward vs gatti we cant sell ppv his opponents do! there is a lot of other fighters out there maybe without the perfect record. who deserve my praise and admiration. paquiao, williams, cotto moseley, clottey, marquez, guerrero, vasquez ..etc people want to see him get knocked out and it just has not happened yet?!! by him cherry picking his opponents he should let the fans choose. before they get old.. as he does!!

  • ty b says:

thats probably the best article ive read on this site and i hvae to agree with almost everything said. props! i just wish mayweather would fight these oppositions and i dont think he ever will. he will beat pac man if they fight but i see pac man avoiding it, that would be smart. im a huge hatton fan and his fight with pac man would have been different with a different trainer, hes game plan was bad. cotto i beleive is the best in the division, if margarito couldnt knock him out with packed wraps i dont see pac man doing it. mayweather can outbox cotto but backing up into the ropes like he usually does he’ll get hit with big body shots that would change the fight. if cotto beats pac hes the poound for pound champ to me and mayweather doesnt want anything to do with it.

  • stephen says:

nothing to do with the artical but just watched the DEGale fight there which he won by tko. surely a world champ in the making people. id bet my left ball on that one

  • Paul says:

Williams can be countered very effective as demonstrated by Quintana and many others. He has a great chin but lower than average defense. He could beat him but so can Cotto in my opinion. We will see after the Pacquiao fight.

  • Paul says:

First, Mayweather does not have a high work rate. As a matter a fact he has a lower than normal punch output through rounds. How would he react to someone actually pushing him to break his disciplined defense. Hatton had some success in that fight. Marquez cornered Mayweather alot he was to damn scared to get hit by a man that out-weighed him be almost 20 pounds in my opinion.

I do not take anything away from PBF but he has not fought any of the top welterweights today. And just look at the problems Zab Judah gave Floyd before it turned in to a circus, Zab was out hustling PBF and kbocking him down although not counted as such.
An you failed to mention Paul williams, big threat, but Floyd wouldn’t fight him either.

Ricardo Mayorga is from Nicaragua and one tough S.O.B who could knock your block off with one swing. He is one dimensional but can hurt you. Do not underestimate what Sugar had to do to beat a very determined puncher.

The only way Floyd can cement his legacy is to fight people his size and at the top of there game, if he does not do it, he will be considered a well-managed fighter.
