Dawson interested in replacing Taylor in Super Six tourney – News

dawson43449By Jim Dower: Unbeaten former IBF/WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (28-0, 17 KO’s) is interested in possibly replacing Jermain Taylor in the Super Six tournament if Taylor decides to back out, according to boxing news from the The Sweet Science. This would be a sensational replacement if Taylor does decide to pull out of the tourney, because Dawson is considered to be one of the best fighters in the sport and would immediately have an effect on the tournament.

As of now, many boxing experts are predicting that either Arthur Abraham or Mikkel Kessler will be the eventual Super Six tournament winner. However, with Dawson entering as a replacement for Taylor, the experts would have to rethink their picks because Dawson is bigger, faster and much more dangerous than Taylor was. Kessler would be facing a fighter that is even quicker than Joe Calzaghe, who defeated Kessler with quickness in a 12 round decision victory in 2007.

Abraham, a big puncher but who suffers from a poor work rate and slow hand speed would have to deal with Dawson’s quickness. If Abraham couldn’t solve the big southpaw Dawson’s speed, there’s little question that Abraham would lose by a lopsided decision. Abraham would likely have a hard time winning even a round against Dawson unless Chad decided to take a round or two off like he did against Antonio Tarver.

However, all this hinges not only on Taylor dropping out of the Super Six tournament, which it’s unclear right now whether he’ll do that, and if Dawson can get by his November 7th opponent Glen Johnson. Most people, this writer included, feel that Dawson should easily win the rematch against Johnson by a fairly lopsided 12 round decision but there’s still a small chance that Dawson could lose.

It would have to be a major break down for Dawson to lose, though, because he dominated Johnson last time out in their fight last year in April. The only time that Johnson was able to do anything was when Dawson took rounds of to rest. When Dawson wanted to, however, he put his foot down on the accelerator and easily dominated Johnson.

Not only is Dawson interested in fighting in the Super Six tourney, but also Dawson’s promoter Gary Shaw, who is all for Dawson stepping in and taking part in the six fighter tournament. Shaw had this to say about Dawson taking part in the Super Six tournament: “I know he’d be welcomed into the tourney and would win it convincingly, even though I have Andre Dirrell.”

Shaw’s other fighter, the young 27-year-old Dirrell, lost a controversial 12 round decision to World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch in what many boxing fans are saying was a home town decision. Dawson has hand speed similar to that of Dirrell and perhaps better power. Dawson and Dirrell would be like a one-two punch for the Super Six tournament and it would make it very tough on the other fighters in the tournament, perhaps even the favored Kessler and Abraham.

Dawson vs. Glen well for everyone out there, Glen is hungry for this fight against Chad, my prediction Glen win’s by KO. Glen is a boxing Warrior.

wellsini i get your point but the reason taylor could be replaced is because he was sent to hospital with concussion and slight memory loss after the abraham ko and it would be a big risk to let him carry on as it is dangerous. But Dawson would be too big for everyone in the tourny

  • Scott Gilfoid says:

I was right with you until you said Dawson was faster than Calzaghe, then I pis*ed myself lauging and realized you articles are as real as mine!

    Keep on it!

  • british boxing fan says:

what if you have money on the winner is the bet void ?? with you tho j if this happens id say dawson wins it

  • Tim says:

Well, when you have a fighter like Taylor who has suffered two really bad knockout losses back to back, it only makes sense that his management consider removing him to let him recover. Fighters that have experienced bad knockout losses generally have tune-ups against softer opposition after a bad knockout loss. With Taylor, he won’t be able to do this and can really hurt his career if he stays in the Super Six tourney.

    Replacing a fighter is rediculous.

Why dont we replace Direll with Pavlik since Direll lost?

While we are at it we could replace the loser of Kessler/Ward with Joe Calzaghe that would be good

    Get my point?

  • Dom says:

Would be amazing. . . .Dawson would be favourite

  • RMC says:

“Bad Chad” needs to concentrate on his own division, firstly Johnson as he hardly dominated him first time round!. Secondly he needs to fight Tavoris Cloud followed by Pascal and finally B’Hop (who beats Dawson any day of the week). The Guys still got too much to prove in his own division to be considering moving down and trying to mix it with some of the best SMW’s. As for Taylor, I don’t think he should quit it was hardly down to poor performances against either Froch or Abraham that lost him those fights, he fought well in both, but was just beaten by the better man on the night, I don’t think Taylor should be ashamed of loosing to either of those fighters and there is still all to play for in this tournament.

What if he enters and Kessler still wins the tournament?

  • mark says:

I don’t think he has fought the calibre of fighters he would befacimg in the tournament. Tarver and Johnson aren’t abraham, kessler or ward. It’d be a great test and might prove whether he’s that good, or just the best in an easy division.

  • ART SA BOXING EXPERT says:

    THAT WILL BE COOL

  • j says:

dawson wins it if he does enter it.
