Clottey and Quintana sign to fight on December 5th – News

quintana4342By Liam Santiago: Joshua Clottey has finally signed to fight former Puerto Rican champion, Carlos Quintana on the undercard of Pavlik/Williams, on December 5th, in what will be a scheduled ten round bout. According to Carl Moretti, of Top Rank, ”The winner probably will be in line for a nice payday and a much bigger fight”. The bout will be the opening fight on the bill.

Clottey, who is coming off a split decision defeat to Miguel Cotto, was due to fight Shane Mosley on boxing day this year, in what would have been a much more competitive bout. However, that deal fell through and Mosley is now set to fight Andre Berto. Expect to see the winner of this bout fighting the winner of that bout next year, probably Shane Mosley vs Joshua Clottey. Quintana holds the record of being the only man to beat Paul Williams, although in their rematch the Puerto Rican southpaw was stopped in the first round. He has had one fight since, beating journeyman Joshua Onyango.

”I think it’s a great fight for us. Quintana is a good name for Josh to fight”, manager of Clottey, Vinny Scolpino said. ”It sets him up for a bigger fight maybe in February or March. Hopefully, Josh will come off this fight with a win and get a big fight. This will definitely be a good, good fight.”

This is a hard one to call. Clottey is a strong and excellent fighter but lacks the killer instinct whereas Quintana is very slick and will give you many angles but, in my opinion, folds under pressure. So question is can Clottey catch Quintana with hard enough shots to discourage him or can Quintana’s southpaw style give Clottey fits? I will go with Quintana in a UD over Clottey. We all know Quintana is capable of boxing for 12 rounds and he has enough power to keep Clottey honest.
