Why Have People Forgotten Where Mayweather Came From?

may45455By Alex Miles: This Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather (39-0-25 KO’s) will be fighting an indomitable Mexican warrior in the form of Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KO’s). Now, I believe that people can say what they want about Mayweather’s wafer thing visade of bravado and Egocentrism, despite the fact that it is merely there to define the bad guy in each scenario, you know, to sell tickets.

But to criticize him so heavily for being a ‘safety first’ fighter, or for fighting a smaller guy? When he boxed in the 1996 Olympics, he was a featherweight, and he started out professionally at super featherweight in the same year. He has consistently moved up in weight to take on the best in each division, with few people boasting a more impressive fight resume, and despite this, I never once heard a complaint or worry about Floyd moving up to 154 to take on Oscar, a fighter 2 inches taller than him. There is less of a difference between him and Juan, but people are out to crucify him for some reason.

Now, the ‘safety first’ accusation. Its this kind of knuckle dragging complaint which make people believe boxing is some sort of roman blood sport, where skill is looked down on, and the highest entertainment is watching fighters destroy each other.

Mayweather never fails to put on an awesome defensive clinic, which is entertainment enough for any real boxing fan. Its not as if he’s a John Ruiz character or Wladimir Klitschko, jabbing and hugging his way to victory. I don’t watch their fights because they are technically poor, and show great cowardice on the combatant’s part. Floyd fights high quality opponents, and more often than not, makes them look ordinary. He really shouldn’t be punished for being the best in the world.

If you want to criticize a part of the fight for something, it should probably be that his production company cant put together a decent under card to save their lives. That’s a reason to say that Floyd sucks, not because he’s essentially unbeatable.

I guarantee that Kelly Pavlik wouldn’t get anywhere near the same abuse if Floyd was moving up to fight him, so why does Marquez comes off as the wronged party here?

Great article. Almost happened overnight – when mayweather split from Arum the media became very harsh toward him. Perhaps this was Arum’s influence. Suddenly whatever he accomplished was automatically discredited.

  • James says:

Bubba said it best. You fight the best then you are the best. Not because you are undefeated to a bunch of bums. Mayweather has had a few great opponents but definetly not 39 of em. MAYWEATHER KEEP FIGHTING THE BEST AND WIN. ONLY THEN WILL YOU BE THE GREATEST POUND FOR POUND. No bums please. Marquez is a good start he is a great fighter. I just wish people would stop under-rating him.

  • mainman says:

i like mayweather hes a good dancer. i wonder where did he took his lesson on dancing.

  • anon says:

good article, problem is people let mayweathers personality get to them and the fact that when he fights he wins easily so people say he hasnt fought anyone good recently, but wer they saying the same things before the fight..no!

  • Cliff hanger says:

    I agree with Bubba.

Now that Mayweather is out of retirement he should definitly take on a few of those opponents whether he wins or not against Marquez… If he claims he’s the best, he should take on the best.

  • Bubba says:

    Mayweather v Cotto
    Mayweather v Mosley
    Mayweather v Paul Williams
    Mayweather v Margarito
    Mayweather v Berto
    Mayweather v Clottey
    Mayweather v Quintana?

If he has these fights and wins Marquez and maybe Pac then he will be considered the best fighter of this generation…. only then!!!

I agree with ‘rOY JONES’ – awesome article and interesting subject matter. Could do with more writers like this.
Mayweather’s past may have been overlooked, but let’s remember, controversy makes money, which in turn keeps this sport alive.

  • rOY JONES says:

this dude is a tramendous writter the best that this website has u must get paid the most no doubt much better then that perez dude..still keep up the good work and keep up the good articles

  • zee zee says:

Mayweather is simply the best fighter of the last 10years.

but he did cherry pick his opponents, wy not fight paul willaims, he can make the weight.

his too big / strong / fast. too hungry,
    williams would beat mayweather.

but i understand why floyd is going after the best p4p.

future fight with pacman, best fight of the last since lennox lewis vs mike tyson.

  • arroyo grande bob says:

I agree-probably a little too much criticism toward Floyd. The Pavlik analogy doesnt add up as Pav is an above average middle-Floyd is the best welter since Leonard. Ive said all along that Floyd would beat any middle(except maybe Williams)so this match-up makes no sense. If you stay away from paying $50 for this you will be sending a message.

Great article i think floyds weight is something which is often overlooked. And i don’t think he ducked as much as people say, early in his career he increased the level of opponents he was fighting very quickly, has fought corrales and hatton who were both undefeated and went up in weight to fight de la hoya. He is now fighting the number 2ranked guy p4p, i think in a few years floyd will get his credit.

Also agree he is respected here in Britain, and it shows by him joining sky sports.

  • Thommohawk says:

I’ll second that Ben. I’m from Scotland & reckon Floyd is very well respected here in the UK, his technical skills are phenomenal.

People need to realise that the trash talking & “money mayweather” thing is all a show which i reckon he realised did not work! I think he will chill & keep his current attitude/persona.

Look at DLH………nice guys make good cash!!

  • js says:

I have really never liked Mayweather, and have always waited for someone to take him down. But it never comes and he keeps walking away.

Yes you can say that he plays the safe fights and only takes fights he thinks he can win. But every fighter does that! He certainly was choosy with many of his early opponents, but De la Hoya was a risk.

I think that people don’t like Mayweather for two reasons: (1) he’s not a particularly exciting and energetic boxer to watch, and (2) he keeps winning.

  • Rhamy says:

    ^ This guy nailed it

  • el senor de los cielos says:

  • steve 88 says:

i hope floyd fights a super fight in britain before his times up, i reckon he could do wembley

  • Cor Lawson says:

Mayweather is simply the best fighter of the last 10years

  • Don says:

Mayweather to win TKO 9. There is a superfight with the Pac-man waiting
