Should Golden Boy Promotions create an Ultimate Boxing Championship?
By Dave Lahr: With the rapid pace that Golden Boy Promotions is collecting fighters for their stable, at some point in the near future they may acquire enough fighters to create their own boxing league. In other words, it would be the equivalent of the UFC. Think of the benefits to boxing if Golden Boy were to do this.
They could match their best fighters against each and we, the boxing public, would be guaranteed to see exciting fights without the boring garbage fights that are usually thrust upon us by the cable networks. I’m not saying that it’s the cable networks’ faults.
They’re just showing what the overly protective promoters are willing to match their fighters against. Most boxing promotes don’t want to risk their fighters against other quality fighters for fear of them getting beaten and losing their appeal to the boxing public and cable networks.
The constant shopping around for easy marks for their fighters causes their fighter to be put in with mostly overmatched opponents that the fans don’t want to see. Sure, boxing fans are willing to put up with some mismatches now and then, but when it becomes practice that is done repeatedly by the promoters, and then boxing loses out because the fights aren’t worth watching.
This is essentially what has happened with the sport. We get nothing but horrible mismatches shown week after week and only rarely do boxing fans get to see a fight worthwhile with two competitive fighters. Even when you do get a fight that seems to be the level, if you dig down deep you’ll find that it really isn’t all that fair.
The bigger named fighter can get away with a lot of things to tip the fighter in their favor, such as using catch weight that benefits them, a bigger ring, and making the fight take place in their home city rather than a neutral location. These are just a few of the ways that promoters can ruin what would be level fight and put things in their favor.
The main problem, though, is that the sport needs to be changed and it may take a big money promotional company like Golden Boy Promotions to save the sport from all the other promoters who are taking boxing and driving it into the ground.
Even if it was smaller organization, it they had the five best fighters in each division, which would be enough to sustain the sport and give it a much better appeal to the general public than it is now. Look at the excitement that Showtime’s Super Six tournament has generated. We’re talking about only six fighters, the best in the division. It doesn’t take a whole lot of fighters for there to be excitement generated.
What the public cares about is seeing good fights that are competitive. They’re sick of the mismatches that the promoters are setting up and want a different alternative to that. I think this is the only real solution to save boxing. All the promoters, mismatches, and multiple weight classes have really destroyed the sport and taken it downhill fast.

this would be out of this would, charge a one fee of about 30 to 50 pounds and watch all the fights.
This is something they should do sell it as a package.
Boxing’s downfall is greedy managers and promoters. I don’t know if this idea would ever fly as most good boxers have a manager or someone who’d love to make some bucks off their talents.
The UFC is so successful because it has billionaires supporting it, and its the only show in town!
The best fighters really dont have any choice. Its UFC or fight on pointless cards. They have control of all the best fighters, they can make the fights everyone wants without the politics.
That is why the UFC is successful.
Not because MMA is somehow more exciting or popular than boxing. Its easy been a success when you run a dictatorship and nobody can question you. UFC is the only show in town.
Boxing is full of different promoters all wanting to make money out of their star fighters. And thats just one of the problems boxing has.
The Idea is a great Idea. It doesn’t have to be GBP but I dont know who else could do it. The rise of the UFC is certainly largly due to its quality setup.
If boxing had the same going on it would become hughly more popular and better to enjoy.
heck no, Golden boy Promotions shouldn’t create anything. To be honest what does GBP have under their roof who be considered good boxers.(I know there are few, but I can’t list them right now.)Also the last thing we need is for Dana White to run his fat mouth about how boxing ripped off his brand name.
What boxing needs is a no nonsense Governing body:
-No local judges scoring fights based on personal bias
-Carefully picked refs, who officate correctly
-An occasional period where they listen to the fans on what the want to see and make that happen
-Put the purse sizes for fights at 40-40 with 20 percent going to the winner.
-Lastly one central belt that should have certain benefits given to the holder. That would make boxers more willing to fight the next big man to get a chance at the belt.
Ha!
Funny isnt it, how at the end of my comment on the post about UFC 102, i suggested we start a UBC, ultimate boxing championship.
24 hours later… someone on this site posts an article saying the exact same thing!
Boxing does need something like this at the moment. The Super six tourny will be brilliant. The prizefighter series in the UK has been a fantastic hit also.
There is no shame in emulating other sports such as MMA…If anything it would be worth a try as the dodgy decisions (Judges, Scoring, Bloody Diamond Belts, Suspect injuries) are hurting boxing more than people realise.
Im more of a part time UFC fan (thats more for my friends) but the format works really well. Big fights every couple of months or whatever it is for UFC nowadays all under one banner and TV channel (ish).
Golden Boy Promotions running things??? LMFAO. Guess you thought the Diaz scoring was legit too.
If anything maybe Congress should investigate boxing like it did baseball.
